and as doughty a man as ever trod a
wobbly deck- - Being without a ship.

Yeeterday afternoon shortly after
3 o'clock there was much noise and
coHfnskm emanating from the open
windows of the 3IcCarthy hotel. Angry
shoot and the sound of scuf-ttls-g
followed one another in rapid
succession. Investigation proved that
Landlord McCarthy and Boarder Mc-
Carthy were enjoying an animated
seaace In which the man who pays
the board was getting decidedly the
worst of the deaL
McCarthy the border had called at
the room of a fellowbparder and during
some discussion they began to
pass out some decidedly uncomplimentary
epithets at one another. The
landlord happened to be in an adjoining
room at the time and hearing the
conversation decided that such talk
was not right and proper around a
well-regulate- d hotel, hence proceeded
to call the other McCarthy down
with a sickening abruptness.
The pair fought with a degree of
rigor and an intensity of purpose that
woukl put to shame the Kilkenny cats
""whose battle wasted all of them but
the tails Reinforcements soon rushed
to the scene of conflict. The police
were summoned upon a riot call and
hot-foote- d stunts to the seamen's
Haven of Rest were being made .from
nil quarters of the city.
When McCarthy the guest was mercifully
snatched from the hands of Mc-
Carthy the landlord, his face greatly
resembled a portrait of an Italian
sunset from the brush of one of the
old masters. ,
The room In which the scuffle took
place reminded one of the famous
slaughter house scene in "The Butcher's
Bride," or "Ton Days in a Packing
House." There was gore to the
right and gore to the loft In the
midst of all the confusion, stood Mc-
Carthy the landlord, with the defiant
air of an enraged bull confronting an
approaching railroad train. On the
floor lay the other McCarthy, with a
severely cut lip and other features
badly damaged.
The injured man was set upon his
feeL When ho had sufficiently recovered
his second wind he made a
bee-lin- e Jo"r the station house, where,
with anger In his eye and blood all
over his countenance, he declared
the occasion of his dilapidated appearance.
He breathed vengeance upon
the whole tribe of McCarthy, outside
of his own immediate family circle,
and especially those engaged in hotel
business or water front recruiting.
McCarthy was granted permission to
wait at the station for medical assistance
in closing up some of the surplus
openings in his face. He was also
told that he could swear out a complaint
against the boarding houso
