lots of great things happening such as the English and Maths conference, the launch of the Leadership Now programme and of course the wonderful INSET
Recent event updates
English Conference – Inspiring boys across the English curriculum
Thank you to all who attended and participated in the recent English Conference that we held. We had a brilliant turn out on the day with some wonderful speakers and
workshop leads. Shonette Bason Wood started the day with a fantastic, energising session which saw us all releasing our inner superheroes. Lee Parkinson (MrP) delivered
an informative session sharing his knowledge and experience of how to successfully integrate technology into the curriculum. We finished the day with input from Gary
Wilson which was though provoking and proved that boys really are brilliant. Thanks again to all our workshop leads – Adam Leivers-Dunn, Cath Wilkes, Petula Bhojwani,
Shonette Bason Wood and Lee Parkinson.
Information & policy updates
Justine Greening speech to Chartered College of Teaching
The Department for Education (DfE) has published (16 February) a Facebook video of Secretary of State, Justine Greening’s speech to the inaugural conference of the
Chartered College of Teaching (CCT). Ms Greening won applause when she said that QTS would not be scrapped, but would be strengthened, and that she wanted to see QTS
so well regarded and so strong that school leaders and teachers will naturally want all of their teaching staff to have it. She announced that a newly strengthened QTS will be
introduced from September 2019. Ms Greening also said that the new, fully revised, national professional qualifications - that have been developed in partnership with the
teaching profession - will be implemented from September 2017, for middle and senior leaders and headteachers, and also for the first time for executive leaders; and that
these qualifications should have the same kudos as the MBA has for business leaders. She also said that the DfE will shortly be publishing the findings of its teacher workload
survey, and an action plan, which will include a programme of targeted support to tackle workload.
World Book Day 2017
The National Literacy Trust has produced free resource packs for primary and secondary schools in support of World Book Day, which will take place on Thursday 2 March
2017. Further information can be found:http://www.literacytrust.org.uk/schools_teaching/world-book-day-2017
National Writing Day
National Writing Day is being held on Wednesday 21 June 2017, with a special website having been established to support activities for the day itself. National Writing Day is
a collaborative initiative between First Story and partner arts and literacy organisations across the UK. It is also supported by Arts Council England and Old Possum’s Practical
Trust. There are free resource packs available for primary and secondary schools, which look at approaches to teaching creative writing, a range of workshop plans, and an
assembly exercise. Further details can be found:https://www.nationalwritingday.org.uk/
Children and young people’s mental health – the role of education
The Education Policy Institute (EPI) has published (16 February) its official submission to the House of Commons Health Select Committee inquiry ‘Children and young
people’s mental health – the role of education’. The main points from the submission are (source: HoC Health Committee):
Schools can help to prevent mental health problems by raising awareness, reducing stigma and having good policies in place to prevent bullying.
Schools, colleges and universities should be mentally health environments, and should adopt a whole school approach to mental health and wellbeing, not simply
targeting support at those most at risk, including:
• leadership that champions efforts to promote emotional wellbeing
• School ethos and environment that promotes respect and values diversity
• Curriculum and teaching to promote resilience and support social and emotional learning
• Enabling student voice to influence decisions
• Staff development to support their own wellbeing and that of their colleagues and students
• Identifying need and monitoring impact of interventions
• Working with parents/carers
• Targeted support and appropriate referral, with clear referral pathways for mental health as exist already for safeguarding
Schools should have a legal responsibility – in common with financial audit – to commission an independent annual safeguarding and wellbeing audit. Ofsted should
have regard to wellbeing in any inspection of a school or college, with the school inspection handbook being revised to include more specific attention to mental
health and wellbeing.
EPI research found that services turn away, on average, nearly a quarter (23 per cent) of the children and young people referred to them for treatment, and also
uncovered a postcode lottery of waiting times.
EPI analysis of local strategies to improve care found wide variation in the quality of these plans. EPI also uncovered serious barriers to the process of transforming
services, such as funding and workforce. Of the £1.25bn extra funding announced in 2015, indications are that it is not reaching frontline services. 8 out of 10
providers who responded to an EPI freedom of information request cited that they had experienced recruitment difficulties.
To address these concerns about young people accessing help, a national strategy on mental health and schools is required. This should include training for teachers
and a consistent programme of evidence-based in-school support. It should also involve statutory, updated PSHE lessons and Ofsted taking wellbeing into
consideration as part of any school or college inspection.
A national strategy is also needed to empower young people to live safe digital lives.
RAISEonline
In April the Department for Education (DfE) will be launching a new service which will provide schools and other existing user groups with detailed performance analysis to
support local school improvement as a replacement to RAISEonline. I would be grateful if you could share this message to the schools within your area.
The new service
We have worked with users to ensure the service will be easier to navigate and use, whilst retaining familiar tools such as filters. Access will be granted through ‘Secure
Access’, in line with other DfE services.
We are also introducing new commercial arrangements to make the data that sits behind RAISEonline available to accredited suppliers who satisfy our strict security and
usage criteria. This will enable the market to develop innovative services which schools can choose to procure should they wish, in a similar way that many do now.
Contact details: j.thain@candlebylane.co.uk or 0115 989 1910 - CLTSA Website, www.cltsa.org.uk - NETS Website, www.netstraining.com - Twitter, @cltsa1

What’s next?
As the new service is DfE led, the Ofsted Helpdesk will close on 31/03/17. We are working with Ofsted to ensure as smooth a transition as possible for users.
When the new service is available we will contact you again with the link to the new site as well as information regarding your Secure Access log-in. We will also be providing
a couple of short videos to get users familiar with the new service.
In the meantime, watch out for updates on the RAISEonline Latest News page.
Following the initial release we will continue to improve the service based on user feedback, analytics and on-going user research. We will be keen to seek your feedback
either through formal testing or through user surveys, which will be built into the new service. As part of those ongoing improvements we are very focussed on ensuring
RAISEonline data is available earlier, as we know that’s a key area schools want to see addressed.
