A Load of Rubbish
A number of years ago, the local council spent a signifi cant amount of
time and resource dealing with fl y-tipping. It proved almost impossible
to police this unwanted dumping, therefore a decision was made to site
skips at strategic locations around each of the villages. This proved very
successful, so much so that the skips were often fi lled within the day of
arrival. This system was improved upon over the next few years with Civic
Amenity sites being created at signifi cant cost in Johnstone, Linwood and
Port Glasgow.
Fly-tipping now seems to be a thing of the past, no longer a problem,
therefore there’s surely no need for all these Civic Amenity sites; or at
least that seems to be the thinking of Renfrewshire Council. From 1st July
the two sites at Johnstone and Linwood have been operating as Recycling
Facilities only (plastics, paper/cardboard, glass, tin cans and clothes)
with all other items such as electrical equipment, household waste and
garden waste having to be taken to Underwood Road in Paisley.
However, I seem to recall that’s pretty much the way it was when fl y-
tipping was a problem. There have been reports of waiting times of up to
two hours to get into the facility in Paisley at the weekends. And already
there have been a couple of fl y-tipping reports appearing on Facebook.
Let’s hope that common sense will prevail and realisation that the shortterm
fi nancial gains of shutting down the Local Civic Amenity sites will be
far out-weighted by the long term costs of dealing with fridges, freezers,
three piece suites and old mattresses littering our country side again.
Planning
The planning proposals for the sites in Kilbarchan and Brookfi eld have
been rejected on the grounds of increased traffi c and the impact on
greenbelt and the environment. This is good news for the over-stretched
schools, surgeries and public amenities.
There has also been a new development with yet another proposal for
Lintwhite Gate in Bridge of Weir. Bridge of Weir Community Council was
actually recalled from summer recess during July to convene a special
meeting after receiving notice of a Planning Application in Principle for
the erection of a retail store, including new road access, petrol fi lling
station and cycle hub at Whitelint Gate, Bridge of Weir. Over 60 residents
attended the meeting and this resulted in an overwhelming rejection of
the proposals.
Bridge of Weir Community Council has submitted its objection to the
application, citing erosion of green belt, possible contaminated land, the
adverse effect on the village centre leading to empty retail shops and
concerns on the impact of a large roundabout access from Johnstone
Road which does not integrate with the village and will almost certainly
remove any possibility of a future rail link between Kilmacolm and
Glasgow. The full text of the objection will be published on the Community
Council web site www.bridgeofweir.org.
The deadline for objections is the end of July
2016. Details are on the Renfrewshire Council
website at www.renfrewshire.gov.uk - then search
under Planning for Ref. 16/0423/PP
The application is likely to go before Renfrewshire
Councils Planning Board in September.
What I don’t understand is that we already have a site which
is perfectly suited for a petrol station at the other end of the
village with no need to build on greenbelt land. Or is that
just me?
