The packaging
solution
THE PROMENS FOOD PACKAGING SYSTEM - SIMPLE AND SYSTEMATIC
+ + + =
All products that we make are part of a larger unit.
The parts work easily together in all facets of
production and make a positive contribution toward
sales to the end user.
This is our philosophy. It is behind everything we
make.
PROMENS KRISTIANSAND
THIS IS US Promens is a leading European developer and
producer of products and applications manufactured in plastic.
Promens provides a wide range of packaging products for
customers in consumer, chemical and medical industries, as
well as components for the automotive and electronic
industries. Promens is focused on creating value for the
customers, based on the expertise in developing and
manufacturing plastic products, with a high degree of efficiency
and quality in all aspects of the operations.
Promens Kristiansand develops and manufactures trays, sells
sealing film, delivers machines, provides service and advice to
big and small food companies throughout the world. We call it
the “Promens Food Packaging System”.
Our factory is located in the sea port of Kristiansand at the
southern end of Norway. We've been manufacturing plastic
products here for fifty years. Today we are an experienced total
supplier to the food industry. We know that our customers
expect something extra, which is why we've designed our own
production machines for trays. This gives our customers a
unique opportunity to get the exact tray they want.
SERVICE THAT WORKS We guarantee that the parts we deliver
fit easily into your production line. If you want us to be your
total supplier, we'll take total responsibility. The only contact
you'll need for advice or technical assistance is Promens
Kristiansand or our local representative. We have been a total
supplier for 30 years, and we'll still be here when you need us.
GOOD ADVICE IS THE TICKET TO SUCCESS We know how food
should be packed, and we are happy to share our knowledge
with you. Thirty years of experience putting together the right
combination of trays, film and machinery has taught us what it
takes to give your product the best quality. The sooner you call
us for planning new production lines, the more you'll benefit
from our expertise acquired through years of applying total
concepts.
WE TAKE CARE OF THE ENVIRONMENT We "think environment"
in all stages of the process, and we have products that are
100% recyclable.
Our trays are made of polyethylene high density (PE-HD),
a polymerisation of ethylene gas. This mixture provides a very
eco-friendly plastic material. Polyethylene is well-suited for
storing, producing and transporting food because it contains no
toxic substances, it can withstand major temperature
fluctuations and is easy to recycle. When completely
combusted, the trays yield CO 2 and water vapour.
PASTAFABRIKKEN If you plan to visit Pastafabrikken in Oslo, you might get confused. In the middle of a residential area of houses
and flats, the only sign of presence is the wonderful smell of cooking emanating from a former slaughterhouse. The room is filled with
machines attended by four people busily at work preparing pasta dishes for restaurants, delicatessens and 7-Eleven stores in the Oslo
area.
– We started up four years ago, and after a bit of trial and
error, we're now delivering all we can produce. – says chef and
pasta-company founder Stig Fjellanger enthusiastically. With
practised hands, he makes the custom-built machine produce
delicious ravioli. He shuts off the machine and takes us further
into the production hall. There, we meet an equally eager co-
founder Peter Romme, who accompanies us to the break room
for a chat.
The founders are indeed satisfied with the
assistance they received from Promens upon receiving an order
to deliver ready-made food to Oslo's 7-Eleven stores. –
Durability and quality became even more important. 7-Eleven
customers were going to get real Italian pasta. Pasta and
sauce had to be mixed at the moment of sale and then packed
air-tight. The solution is that we deliver ready-made pasta and
sauce separately so that store attendants can pack the heated
food in the store without requiring any special training. The
results were so great that 7-Eleven now has regular customers
dropping in several times a week. Promens has been very
flexible and helped us develop the concept,
which now is so simple that it's virtually
foolproof. – says Peter with a smile.
Stig: – Another important factor for
us is the high level of service and stability in
– Everything must be foolproof
delivering trays and film to both us and our customers.
Promens takes good care of us, even though we're not one of
their biggest customers. We get fast and efficient service,
although the packing machines we use are so good that we
rarely need help.
Peter serves fresh and unbelievably delicious
tortellini mortadella with tomato-and-balsamico sauce. –Yes,
we eat pasta for lunch every day, but it doesn't matter when it
tastes so good, he says with satisfaction. And it's true, their
pasta is out of this world!

BROOKFIELD FOODS Business Unit Controller, Tony Hawkins has really done his job. He has developed an entirely new market for
Brookfield Foods. Traditionally, the company's products are to be found in the delicatessen, chilled and frozen food sections in
supermarkets, but the frozen foods market is no longer growing. Consumers are leaning more towards meal solutions/HMR (home
meal replacements) - and Tony Hawkins wants to be where the customers are.
– We identified the market, and wanted it
Located on a large industrial estate between rolling hillsides in
the northernmost part of Wales. Here, Brookfield Foods has
started producing meal solutions, and with instant success!
We look around at the impressive factories where the food
giant has taken a great leap into the future. After our rounds
among huge ovens, high-speed production lines, the smell of
freshly cooked meat and twenty-some people busily at work
producing the days batch of the best seller, barbecued spare
ribs, we meet a sprightly and busy Hawkins in a modern and
elegant Boardroom.
“In March 1998 I was appointed to establish the
company in the emerging meal solutions/home meal
replacement marked and since then we have invested £ 4.5
million in machines, personnel and buildings. The meal
solutions/HMR market is growing rapidly in Europe, and we're
growing rapidly with the market.” – he says energetically. “Of
course, we were excited about whether it would be a success,
but we had developed good products and forged alliances with
business partners we could grow with. Promens delivered first a
manually operated, then a semiautomatic and finally a fully
automatic sealing machine. Consequently, we could be flexible
with the size of the delivery right from the start. Promens
delivers both the trays and the film we use in our production.
Promens's know-how gave us a real sense of security.”
“We now supply most of the supermarket chains in
the UK. We have a good product and provide the best possible
quality. Food is extremely vulnerable during transport, and we
want to be sure of what is served to the end user. A Promens
tray is not only a food storage container, it also functions well in
the store.
So well, in fact, that we promote Promens trays and films “as
standard” with our products.”
Across the road is a site for a new factory. “We're
expanding our customer base all the time, and in Promens
we've found a supplier we can grow with. It's as simple as
that!”

MACHINES
for large and small companies
We deliver machines for production plants of all sizes. We know how important it is in terms of efficiency that all parts fit perfectly
together, and we have vast experience getting production lines to work smoothly. Promens offers machines adapted to the trays and
film that you choose for your products. With machines from Promens, you can both seal, draw vacuum and gas flush the trays. Our
machines are easy to use and, of course, we provide operating instructions. Our machines quite simply provide the strongest sealing
for your products.
PROMENS 572S
A small, low cost hand operated sealing machine approved
for direct food contact. The Promens 572S operates as a
semi-automatic machine. The trays are loaded into the
tool, and when the drawer is closed it automatically seals
the trays. The machine can be used for all Promens trays
up to size 264 x 165 mm (gr. 10). The tool change is easy
and the machine is ideal for both product development
and sealing of small batches of food. There is no cutting
between trays on a multicavity tool on this machine. There
is no need for compressed air on this machine.
PROMENS 511S/VG
The Promens 511S is a semi-automatic sealing machine.
The machine has automatic film feed and profile cutting. It
can be delivered with a mobile stand. The machine can be
used for all Promens trays except our group 50. Operation
is extremely simple: load the tray into the tooling, push
drawer in. Cycle starts and when it is finished the drawer
can be opened. The machine can be provided with a tray
lifting device that elevates the trays when the drawer is
opened.
PROMENS 911VGJ
The Promens 911VGJ is the biggest semi-automatic
packaging machine for sealing trays equipped with vacuum
GOOSSENS On the outskirts of the village Ommel, on the flat farmlands of southern Holland you'll find a long grey building that
attracts trucks from all over Europe, just like a truck-stop serving free coffee. Here they slaughter, clean and pack thousands of
chickens every day under strict hygienic conditions. The results can be found on the dinner tables of Germany, United Kingdom and the
Benelux countries. The manufacturer is Goossens and the products are marketed under the name Astenhof. In an office in this building
we meet Erik van de Kerkhof, an uncompromising product developer and quality inspector with an eye for simple solutions.
– We want a tray that’s rugged and hygienic
Speed is important. Customers put in their orders around 11:00
a.m. and the first trucks leave the packinghouse at 2:00 p.m.
– says van de Kerkhof with a determined look. This man does
not waste his own or other people's time. – The simplicity of
the logistics system from Promens enables us to deliver to our
customers just a few hours after placing the order. This gives our
customers' customers the freshest possible product.
– He takes us down to the special loading ramps forming a
bridge between warehouse and trucks. Van de Kerkhof is
clearly proud of the system. The loading ramps act as an
extension of the cold-storage facility. Everything is designed to
make the products as hygienic and fresh as possible.
Goossens first met Promens at a food fair in Anuga,
Germany, in 1997. They were looking for a new, innovative type
of packaging for some of their products. – We were looking for
a very solid and hygienic tray, hence we chose the trays from
Promens. It is crucial that our trays are of a high quality,
because they are transported all over Europe, and anything can
happen to them.
He shows us a EURO-pallet with fresh chickens in group-
number-24 trays. – We have high-quality rugged trays that can
withstand the processes the chickens must undergo in the
packinghouse. Furthermore, the possibility for vacuum and gas
packing is important. We also expect our suppliers to provide
knowledge and advice, and Promens has given us that. In
addition to all that, the trays must be optimally adapted to EURO-
pallets. We don't pay for the transport of air – he says very
adamantly, leaving little reason to doubt him.
