Thicker than water When: March 13 to 18
Willy Russell’s Blood Brothers is one of the longest running musicals of all time, and after three decades on
the stage, it’s still playing to packed audiences and traditionally sells out Theatre Royal when it comes to
town. It tells the captivating tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks,
only to meet again with fateful consequences. There’s a love triangle, imprisonment and tragedy. Think
EastEnders with great music, and you have the gist.
Hedda Gabler
When: Until March 8
Victoria Elliott was Denise in Hebburn,
starred in the X Factor musical I Can’t Sing,
and is now Hedda Gabler - Ibsen’s great
part known as the ‘female Hamlet’, at
Northern Stage. Here’s more...
You’ve been rehearsing for Hedda by day
and playing Elizabeth in Dr Frankenstein at
night. How have you managed? Denial and
red wine! They’re both dense, psychologically
intense roles, so you have to be 100% into
what you’re doing.
How did you approach such an iconic role?
She’s an enigma, but it’s a dream come true.
It’s authentic and true to me.
The set design from Tom Piper is incredible.
Selma (Dimitrijevic, the director) and I are
strong feminists and Tom’s set design really
works with that; it’s masculine and strong.
How do you cope with a short, intense
rehearsal period? It’s like being in Big
Brother. You spend all this time locked up
with eight people until you feel like you’re
going mad.
Tell us about playing Denise in Hebburn. It
polarised people. I’d be sat in a pub and hear
punters behind me talking about how s*** it
was but others loved it.
What next? I’m giving myself a
couple of months off to co-write a onewoman
show I want to take to the Edinburgh
Fringe. I’ve also been through an awful breakup
and I’m now on the apps, as a 35-year-old
woman trying to maintain some dignity.
Quentin Blake
at the Laing
When: From March 11 to July 8
Probably the best-loved illustrator on the
planet, a show of Sir Quentin Blake’s work
is heading to Laing Art Gallery.
Fans of his work, and of the books of
Roald Dahl and David Walliams, which
feature his pictures, will recognise his
style instantly, and in advance of the
show, here’s more to whet your appetite:
Blake started collaborating with Roald
Dahl in 1975 and went on to illustrate
classics including The Witches, Matilda,
and The Twits. He says The BFG was his
favourite project with Dahl.
Blake only ever wears white plimsolls,
despite the fact that Dahl teased him for
going out to dinner in them.
Preferring to draw from imagination
rather than reference, he says drawing is
“like acting and I get to play all the parts”.
Blake illustrated Great Day for Up for
Dr Seuss, the first book Seuss did not
illustrate himself.
He has also found “enormous
satisfaction” in painting works for the
walls of hospitals, mental health units and
maternity wards in the UK and France.
One of his toughest jobs was working
on Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen’s Sad
Book, which details his grief after losing his
18-year-old son Eddie to meningitis.
He also illustrated a previously lost
Beatrix Potter manuscript telling The Tale of
Kitty-in-Boots, which was published for the
first time last year.
He says his greatest achievement is
“keeping going,” adding, “somehow, I
haven’t gone out of fashion. If my drawings
encourage and inspire people, I find it very
touching.”
FUNNY GIRLS
SOPHIE’S W RLD
With
As International Women’s Day hits town, Liz Hands
delves into a fantastic bill of women’s comedy heading
into Newcastle, beginning with Sophie Willan
With a heroin-addicted mother
who had a schizophrenic partner,
comedian Sophie Willan grew up
in and out of the care system and
boucing between family members
and foster parents. Aged 23, she was
handed a file which detailed years
of reviews by social workers, and
made the unusual decision to turn
the material into a stand-up show,
On Record, which she’s bringing to
Newcastle. Here’s how she finds the
funny in the most unlikely places…
How have you found comedy
in this personal tragedy? Oh,
there’s lots of humour in any family
dynamic. People on the outside
might not see it, but if you open it
up and invite people in they can
see the humour. By the end of the
show, the characters have become
humanised and the audience finds
my mum and her partner lovable.
Were you hurt by what those
social workers said about you?
I’m reclaiming the negative
language they used about me; that I
was rebellious, defiant and rude.
How do you cope with criticism
of your mum? People say why
doesn’t she get a job, but I ask would
you want her to get one? She gets
frightened being in a queue, let
alone on a check-out with a queue
coming towards her. Comedy can
make people think about their preconceptions.
Is there a wider message? There
are so many cuts to mental health
services and so much grossly
negative representation like TV’s
Benefits Street, and individual
blaming of people really winds me
up. On Record isn’t, ‘oh my God,
this has happened to me’; there’s a
wider narrative there.
Who makes you laugh? My
grandma introduced me to Victoria
Wood and Julie Walters, and I love
Susan Calman and Josie Long.
Comedy’s opened up for women;
you don’t have to break down preconceptions
that we aren’t funny.
When you get great reviews,
does it pile on the pressure? No,
it’s great to be well received, but
while reviewers are great, it’s the
audiences who will be there with
you show after show; that’s why I
love touring.
Sophie Willan: On Record, March 9, £10/£8, Northern Stage www.northernstage.co.uk
How do you deal with nerves?
If there’s lots going on, like in
Edinburgh, it feels like there’s a lot
of pressure, but when it’s
just me and the audience I
don’t get nervous. I
get to the venue
early, go through my
set and get myself
mentally prepared.
Describe your humour
Observational, personal;
observations about wider
social narratives made through
my experiences of childhood, my
mother and growing up. I need
to be personally connected to
the comedy.
What about your new book?
There are so many pieces of work
about those growing up without
parents, but how great would it be
if they had been written by people
who actually had that experience?
Stories of Care features works of
fiction written by real care leavers.
What’s next? I’m on Alan Davies’
As Yet Untitled show in April, with
Sanjeev Bhaskar, Ivo Graham and
Susan Calman. I can’t wait!
HAIR FLAIR
HAIR FLAIR
GET SET FOR
THE WEEKND
The Weeknd (yes, it is spelt like that) on sex, drugs, marriage
and music superstardom, not necessarily in that order
The Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye, is
heading to Newcastle, albeit without
his famous hair, having cut it off in
favour of a more groomed look. A
renowned lothario and lover of Selena
Gomez, here’s what he has to say…
On being a man of mystery: “We live in
an era when everything is so excessive,
so it’s refreshing for people to be like,
‘Who the f*** is this guy?’ My career
is going to be long, because I haven’t
given people everything.”
On Taylor Swift copping a feel of his
hairdo at a Grammys party: “She was
just drawn to it. And, of course, I’m not
going to be like, ‘hey, can you stop?’ I
mean, it felt good!”
On being a lothario: “I’ve had a lot
of sex.”
On living in a haunted house in LA:
“I hear voices sometimes. I heard the
Hollywood hills lie over Indian burial
grounds, but maybe it’s just the wind.”
On the food of his Ethiopian heritage:
“It’s the best, man. But it’s very
fattening. Ethiopian mothers like to
have chubby kids.”
On making music while under the
influence: “When I had nothing to do
but make music, it was heavy, so drugs
were a crutch. There were songs on my
first record that were seven minutes
long - rambling and whatever thoughts
I was having under the influence. I can’t
see myself doing that now.”
On exercise: “I’m unhealthy when I’m
working, and start working out when I
go on tour. As long as my face looks OK,
I’m good.”
On his theme for the Fifty Shades of
Grey film soundtrack: “The film and
my music are a match made in Heaven.
My work is very Fifty Shades of Grey.”
On kids and marriage: “I’m the kind
of guy to have kids before getting
married. Marriage is scary, man.”
On overcoming nerves: “I’m not up
there lip-syncing, I don’t have backup
dancers, I don’t have crazy s***
going on; It’s all about me and the
microphone. I used to go on stage
drunk because of nerves, but you have
to fight it and now I feel like people are
more nervous to see me than I am to
see them.”
