WELCOME!<br />

We are pleased you will participate <strong>in</strong> the <strong>3rd</strong> <strong>International</strong> <strong>Summit</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Zero</strong><br />

<strong>Suicide</strong> <strong>in</strong> Sydney, Australia Monday and Tuesday, February 27 – 28, 2017, <strong>in</strong><br />

conjunction with the <strong>International</strong> Initiative for Mental Health Leadership<br />

(IIMHL) Exchange.<br />

As with many countries participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the summit, suicide is a lead<strong>in</strong>g cause <strong>of</strong><br />

premature death with<strong>in</strong> Australia. In 2015 the ABS reported 3,027 suicide deaths<br />

– account<strong>in</strong>g for 20% <strong>of</strong> premature deaths across the nation, suicide is the<br />

highest s<strong>in</strong>gle contributor to ‘potential years <strong>of</strong> life’ lost <strong>in</strong> this country.<br />

While the number <strong>of</strong> suicide deaths cont<strong>in</strong>ues to rise <strong>in</strong> Australia, the<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational community has seen dramatic results <strong>in</strong> suicide prevention with<strong>in</strong><br />

healthcare. We believe a focus on <strong>Zero</strong> <strong>Suicide</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Healthcare</strong> is a necessary<br />

addition to other suicide prevention strategies. <strong>The</strong> US based Henry Ford<br />

<strong>Healthcare</strong> System ‘Perfect Depression Care’ program and its 75% reduction <strong>in</strong><br />

suicide deaths <strong>in</strong> under 5 years – cont<strong>in</strong>ues to <strong>in</strong>spire an <strong>in</strong>ternational dream.<br />

<strong>Suicide</strong> Prevention Australia is look<strong>in</strong>g to launch a 5 year pilot <strong>of</strong> <strong>Zero</strong> <strong>Suicide</strong><br />

across a number <strong>of</strong> sites. Let’s jo<strong>in</strong> together and cont<strong>in</strong>ue the worldwide<br />

network<strong>in</strong>g and learn<strong>in</strong>g as we pursue this audacious dream together.<br />
