PHOTOGRAPHY HINTS & TIPS
FOCUS – keeping it sharp
With The Studio
Bridge Of Weir
Modern Autofocus cameras are very accurate and produce perfectly sharp
images most of the time, but they can be fooled in certain circumstances.
Focusing through a window - if the window is dirty or if there are strong
reflections from inside the room then the camera will often focus on the
glass and not on the scene beyond the window.
This is the same with mirrors – you will often focus on the mirror rather than
the reflection.
Your camera will generally choose what to focus on automatically - unless
you tell it otherwise. This is generally the subject CLOSEST to you. This
could be the tree branch in the corner of the shot rather than the mountain
scene you are looking at. Or a fence post rather than the person you are
trying to photograph.
If you are able to choose the focus point manually you can select which part
of the scene is in the sharpest focus. Or recompose the shot so the subject
you want sharp is the closest subject.
Autofocus can easily be fooled by subjects moving either towards or away
from you – the lens will appear to
‘hunt’ for a focus point and will not
settle on any point, try putting the
camera in ‘Sports’ mode.
The first meeting of the 2015/16 session was an opportunity to meet new
members and to develop the syllabus and competition topics for this new
session.
We will be providing tutorials and talks on many topics this year. For
example using photo management tools, including library, backup and
storage techniques as well as more advanced topics using photographic
image processing tools. We will also be covering many related computer
topics including the compatibility and/or the ability of applications to run on
a Windows 10 machine.
September’s competition topic was ‘Seaside Structures’. The competition
entries, all from Scotland’s coastline were excellent and varied in style and
content. The winning submission was a monochrome image, taken at night,
of the Forth Rail Bridge by Derrick McPherson. Gary Ramanathan took
second and third place with his images of a light beacon (mini lighthouse)
and the Newark Pier, Port Glasgow.
Due to the way your camera works if you try focusing on a plain wall or an
empty sky it will generally not be able find a point of focus.
Low light conditions also make it difficult to focus, in a dimly lit hall or trying
to photograph the sky at night - manual focus is the answer. Some cameras
will activate a ‘focus assist’ infrared system when using the flash.
Every Month The STUDIO – Bridge of Weir (07904 419578) will bring you hints and
tips to improve your photography - regardless of what kind of camera you have.
Gryffe Camera Club reopened for the 2015-16 session on the 9th
September.
We meet at 7.30pm every Wednesday evening at the Carrick Centre in
Houston. Keen photographers, novices or beginners are welcome to come
Anyone joining can benefit from the series of guest speakers, workshops
and outings that we plan throughout the year.
We regularly hold club competitions for
beginners and more advanced members.
Also having friendly battles with other clubs
in the area helps to keep us thinking about
new subjects to photograph.
Our first guest speaker, Tom Docherty, will be
at the club on the 28th October at 7.30pm
to present his talk about photographs of
‘Glasgow, Old & New’.
