summer camp experiences right
here in our community with a
day camps, to sports, nature,
dance, art, and technology, there
is a camp for every child.
Our traditional day camps for
children ages 3-12 are offered
from one week to eight weeks,
so you can customize your summer
camp schedule to fit your
family’s summer plans. Our
eight-week camps are a great
value and you can save up to
20 percent by signing up for the
entire session. McCormick Day
Camp will be back at its original,
well-loved location at McCormick
Nature Preserve and a full
session is six weeks.
This year, our sports camps
cover lacrosse, soccer, basketball,
football, golf and volleyball.
Dance Me a Story camps
for ages 3-7 will have your tiny
dancer twirling all summer to the
music of Alice in Wonderland,
Beauty and the Beast and many
more.
Musical Theater camp productions
for 2017 are: Finding
Nemo, Finding Dory, Aladdin
and High School Musical 2. We
also offer S.T.E.M. camps which
include video game coding,
Minecraft Claymation and chess
camp. Do you have a young director
in the house? They will
love our Camp Hollywood,
where they work in teams to create
their own story, script, build
scenes, and then share their movie
with friends and family. Wildlife
camps are always a favorite
and the Wildlife Discovery Center
is one of the best places for
kids to learn about animals and
nature as they study and observe
local wildlife along the Middlefork
Savana.
For older kids in grades 7-10,
our popular Counselor in Training
(CIT) volunteer program offers
them the opportunity to develop
leadership skills through
summer work experience.
The many skills learned by
the CIT will aid them in possibly
obtaining future paying job
opportunities. The CIT packet
of information, including a CIT
application, is available for pick
up at the Recreation Center or
on our website. Applications are
backpacking, even dog
world’s tallest peaks.
Located at 1130 Greenleaf
passion for outdoor fun is
infectious, our professionalism
unparalleled. Our
programming expands horizons
and is supported by
over three decades of experience.
The Northwest Passage
makes high adventure
accessible to all.
Northwest Passage
camps are designed to be
fun, but more significantly
they develop young adventurers.
The outdoor
world holds a lifetime of
enriching experiences for
those with the confidence
and skills to seek them
out. Northwest Passage
programming gets you out
• Boys & Girls, ages 7-16
• Traditional & Specialty
activities, PLUS HORSES,
Teen Programs, Adventure Trips
• Sessions from 4 days
to 1 or more weeks!
there and lays a foundation
for you to explore further.
Weeklong half- and
full-day programs introduce
younger campers to
sea kayaking and stand
up paddle boarding in the
North Shore’s local waterways.
Under the guidance
of experienced instructors,
campers have fun while
honing highly transferable
water safety skills. Attention
all “waterbugs,” this is
the camp for you!
Day and overnight programs
for teenage adventurers
develop more
advanced leadership and
outdoor skills. Climb up a
rock face but also understand
the roped belay system
that makes climbing
safe. Help build a belay
system and manage it yourself.
Teen programs are like
an “adventure learner’s
permit.” Participants have
the opportunity to “get in
the driver’s seat” in a controlled
outdoor setting.
Teen programs also expand
self-sufficiency and teamwork.
Encountering new
outdoor challenges with
great friends is the focal
point, but collateral experiences
like pitching camp
as a group, sharing responsibilities
and planning trip
logistics readies campers
for leadership roles in any
setting.
Northwest Passage family
adventures make it easy
to enjoy the outdoors with
your loved ones. Activitybased
outdoor adventures
are such valuable experiences,
but planning and
producing them can require
prior knowledge and a big
chunk of time.
Let The Northwest Passage
take care of the logistics
and the “grunt work.”
You just need to show up
ready for fun. The only
question is how much fun
do you want to have: an
afternoon on the water? A
weekend in the woods? A
week of island hopping?
Double dip and make it
two weeks? The Northwest
Passage has your needs
covered.
We offer a spectrum of
paddling and hiking trips
throughout the Midwest’s
wooded shorelines and
even venture to faraway
places like Kilimanjaro,
the Amalfi Coast and South
Africa with adventurous
families.
Our mission is to get you
ready, and get you going on
a lifetime of adventure. See
you out there!
Explore, build and create with Noggin Builders
Camp Noggin Builders oneweek
summer camps in Northbrook
are filled with fun, handson
STEM activities! Your
curious explorers (grades K-8th
and ages 3-5 years) will enhance
creative problem solving and
critical thinking skills, choosing
from our many different weekly
themes including Robotics, Science
of Art, littleBits, Go Green!,
Architecture, and Secret Codes &
Ciphers.
Why is creative problem solving
an important skill to teach
children? Teaching creative
problem skills helps today’s kids
become tomorrow’s future leaders.
Our world is quickly changing
in ways we can’t even imagine,
and the most important skill
our children need to be successful
in the future is the ability to use
creative and critical thinking to
solve problems. STEM activities
(using science, technology, engineering
and math) are a natural
way to build these skills.
Why is it important that kids
continue to learn during the summer?
Research shows that children
show a decrease in both
knowledge and skills after summer
vacation. On average, children
return to school about one
month behind where they left off
the previous school year. Engaging
kids in learning activities
during the summer helps prevent
this. Another benefit to participating
in fun, exploratory learning,
is that it inspires children
to view educational activities as
something enjoyable and fun.
How is Noggin Builders different?
At Camp Noggin Builders
we encourage exploration
through hands-on, project-based
learning. We believe in asking
questions, rather than stating
answers, and in involving children
in creating the path our explorations
will take. At Noggin
Builders, your child will build
more than a science project; they
build the life-long skills of problem
solving, creative and critical
thinking, perseverance, communication
and collaboration.
Camp that works for your
schedule! Noggin Builders offers
flexible schedule options to
meet the needs of your summer.
Because each week’s theme and
activities are different, you can
sign up for the weeks that fit your
child’s schedule. Half-day (9
a.m.-noon) and full-day (9 a.m.-4
p.m.) camps are available, as well
as extend day for early morning
and late afternoon. Each camp
day will be filled with fun, handson
activities in STEM. Your child
will experiment, build, and create
through explorations based on
the theme of the week. Fun team
building activities, cooking and
crafts are also part of each week.
Kenilworth Park District summer camps keep
children active, mentally engaged
During the summer months,
parents can keep their children
physically and mentally engaged
by signing them up for Kenilworth
Park District summer
camps.
The fun and learning begins
Monday, June 19, and runs
through Friday, July 28. There
is no camp on July 4th in observance
of Independence Day.
The Kenilworth Park District
is committed to nurturing youths
in the community. At camp, children
will have an enriching, safe
experience with caring directors
and counselors.
According to counselors, there
are 4 reasons that you should send
your children to summer camp:
1. Adventure: Kenilworth Park
District summer camps stimulate
the imagination of young children
through adventure and exploration.
2. Fun and fitness: Camps engage
children through mental and
physical stimulation, including
outdoor activities, arts and crafts,
and science experiments.
3. Friendship: Camps offer
an outlet to children outside of
school where they can connect
with each other through camp
activities and create new friendships.
4. Memories: Camp is an unforgettable
experience, and your
campers will have plenty of exciting
stories to tell at the end of
each day. The Kenilworth Park
District offers two different summer
camps to choose from.
Campers should be registered
for the correct camp based on the
grade that they will enter in September
2017. Each camp offers a
regular day (9 a.m.-noon) or an
extended day (9 a.m.-1:30 p.m.)
option. The following is a brief
synopsis of each camp.
LITTLE SPRINGS: (Ages 3
to first grade.) At Little Springs,
campers will enjoy activities in
the areas of art, music, science
and plenty of outdoor activities.
In addition to daily activities,
special performances are scheduled
throughout the summer. In
the past, campers have enjoyed
performances by jugglers, magicians,
professional BMX riders,
animal shows, puppet shows, and
yo-yo entertainers.
SPORTS PLUS: (second
through sixth grade) In Sports
Plus, campers participate in a
variety of organized sports and
games. These activities are focused
on skill development and
team building. Arts and craft projects,
regular trips to the beach,
and weekly entertainers are all a
part of the Sports Plus camp experience.
Sports Plus participants
can choose either a three-week or
six-week options.
The Kenilworth Park District
also offers junior golf, basketball
skills, karate, and boys lacrosse
summer camp options.
22ndCenturyMedia.com CAMP GUIDE
22ND CENTURY MEDIA | March 9, 2017 | 7
How your child can benefit from a STEM education
Everyone from teachers to
business owners is talking about
the importance of science, technology,
engineering, and math
(STEM).
But why is everyone so concerned
about these specific fields
of study?
Here are just a few of the benefits
your child could gain from
studying STEM.
1. Solve Real-World Problems
With Creative Solutions
STEM fields encourage spatial
reasoning, if-then thinking,
problem solving, and creativity.
They force students to look at
problems from different angles
and come up with unique solutions.
While reinforcing these behaviors
ultimately strengthens
their performance in math or science
class, it doesn’t stop there.
Life is no cakewalk, and kids
encounter a variety of problems
every day, from homework challenges
to friend drama. By improving
their problem-solving
skills in the STEM classroom,
your child will be better prepared
to tackle all of life’s problems,
big or small.
2. Prepare for Our Evolving
Future
An estimated 1 million STEM
jobs will go unfilled by 2020,
and it’s time to start equipping
our kids with the skills they need
to thrive in our ever-changing
world.
If your child dreams of engineering
innovative bridges or
creating the next cure for cancer,
it’s easy to see how studying science
or math could be integral.
But these aren’t the only students
who need to dive into STEM
studies.
As robotics and automation
continue to change the workforce,
experts suggest that a
basic understanding of science,
technology, engineering, and
math will be necessary for most
jobs. As our information-based
society grows more and more reliant
on technology, students will
need to be prepared.
3. Discover a Passion
STEM fields can appear boring
or difficult for students who
have only encountered them in
traditional learning settings. Yet
with the right instruction, STEM
studies can unlock a whole new
world of possibilities. In fact,
the best STEM instructors connect
science, technology, engineering,
and math principles to
the topics that already interest
students. Making those connections
is often the spark that leads
to students developing a lifelong
passion.
Get started with STEM at iD Tech
At iD Tech summer programs,
8 | March 9, 2017 | 22ND CENTURY MEDIA CAMP GUIDE
22ndCenturyMedia.com
During the month of
March, I often think of
Kermit the Frog and the
song, “It’s Not Easy Being
Green.”
While Kermit is referring
to the color green in
his song, I am reminded of
a state of being. When you
are “green” at something,
it often means that you are
new.
There are many times
in life that we are put in a
new situation, whether it
be changing schools, joining
a sports team or club,
moving to a different location,
starting a new job,
switching careers, etc.
Coming to camp for
the first time may bring
about feelings of being
green. Being new can
seem scary or challenging
at first. You may be wondering
if you will fit in, if
the other campers will like
The Tao of being a camp counselor
you, if the food tastes like
what you eat at home, if
your bed will be comfortable,
and a long list of
other thoughts that may be
crossing your mind in the
days and months leading
up to your first sleep-away
camp experience.
First of all, you should
know that at Towering
Pines, we LOVE having
new campers join us
each summer! It is fun to
welcome boys from new
places that will contribute
to the diverse culture of
geographic locations that
are represented each year.
This will add to a growing
list of connections that you
will make by having friends
from all around the world.
New campers bring a
fresh perspective and energy
that is important to the
life of camp – we THRIVE
because you are a VITAL
New campers bring a fresh perspective
and energy that is important
to the life of camp – we
THRIVE because you are a VI-
TAL part of our camp family!
part of our camp family!
To help you feel comfortable
in your new summer
home, we have several
things in place to make
it easy for you to get in the
groove of camp.
First off, your counselors
will greet you with a
BIG smile and lend a hand
with moving in and settling
into your cabin. They
will explain the routines of
a typical day and will be
ready to answer any questions
you may have.
After that, you will
get to play a ton of FUN
games that will assist you
with learning the names
of the boys in your cabin
and around camp. Because
we are a smaller camp, it
is truly a place “Where
Everybody Knows Your
Name”!
Before selecting your activities,
you will have the
opportunity to take a tour
and see where each takes
place, meet the staff, and
find out all of the cool stuff
you will get to do.
Evenings will offer an
opportunity to do a cabin
activity, be part of our
weekly campfire, or take
part in a workshop of your
choice. The TP kitchen
staff will serve up some
awesome meals that will
provide comfort as you
spend your first few days
at camp. Don’t be surprised
if you ask your Mom when
you return home to cook
a recipe that is something
new you tried at camp!
New can also be exciting!
You will be embarking
on an adventure that
may be different from
what your friends may
choose to do this summer.
Even veteran campers
experience a taste of “being
green” each summer.
They may be in a different
cabin with a new mix of
campers from the year before
or they may decide to
try a new activity or challenge
themselves in an old
one.
The great thing is that
we are there to support
each camper every step of
the way. So, maybe it really
IS easy being green
after all at Towering Pines!
Come see for yourself
and join us for summer
2017 ... we can’t wait to
meet you!
Harand Camp of the Theatre Arts to
celebrate 63rd season in summer 2017
The renowned Harand
Camp of the Theatre Arts,
located on the campus of
Carthage College in Kenosha,
continues with its
63rd Season in Summer
2017. To register, or for
more information, contact
(847) 864-1500, harandcamp@gmail.com
or visit
www.harandcamp.com.
Established in 1955,
Harand Camp was one of
the first co-ed, residential
camps to combine musical
theater with the fun of traditional
camp life. Located
on the beautiful campus
of Carthage College in
Kenosha, Harand offers
performing arts training
for campers ages 7 to 18,
plus sports, activities, and
camp fun in a supportive,
family environment. Sessions
run one, three, or six
weeks and culminate with
large-scale performances
in a 400-seat, state-of-theart
theater.
In preparation for final
shows, campers take daily
classes in singing, dancing,
and acting with occasional
rehearsals in the
evening. Harand Camp adheres
to a non-competitive
philosophy where “no man
is an island” and everyone
is a star. It is the goal for
everyone to develop performance
skills while also
building self-confidence.
During the first threeweek
session (Pageant:
June 18–July 9) campers
perform in a major musical
revue featuring the
entire camp. Each group
stars in two sections of
non-stop singing and dancing
wearing amazing costumes.
During the second
three-week session (Musicals:
July 10–30) each
age group prepares a fulllength
musical with every
camper performing a lead
role and in the ensemble –
ensuring everyone has the
chance to shine.
Campers may also attend
for six weeks (June
18-July 30) or a unique
one-week session (Workshop:
June 18–24) exclusive
to new campers, ages
7-12. This option is perfect
for children who have
never been away from
home and culminates in
a workshop performance
featuring songs, dances
and drama presentations.
Enrollment in the program
is very limited and oneweekers
always have the
option to stay.
In addition to the theatre
program, campers take
Big Blue Swim School’s four-day Super-
Improver camps run all summer long
Big Blue Swim School
is excited to announce the
schedule for this summer’s
Super-Improver Camps.
Each four-day camp runs
Monday through Thursday
and packs a month’s worth
of progress into four consecutive
days with the same
teacher.
“We like to encourage
year-round swimming,”
Big Blue founder Chris
DeJong said. “To do this,
we make our schedule as
parent-friendly as possible.
“Our Super-Improver
Camps are a great way for
families to pick and choose
which weeks they would
like to attend lessons.”
Families are welcome to
sign up for multiple camps
throughout the summer
in addition to attending
weekly lessons with the
same professional teacher
to maximize progress and
comfort around the water.
Big Blue’s three state-ofthe-art
teaching facilities
in Buffalo Grove, Niles,
and Wilmette (and coming
this summer to Hoffman
Estates) are specifically designed
to make swim lessons
as easy and as fun as
possible for families.
Professional, adult teachers
teach small classes of
three to four swimmers in
90-degree water. Families
are welcome to change in
their own individual changing
room and parents may
take advantage of a comfortable
viewing area with
free Wi-Fi or sit pool side
for a front-row seat.
“There’s nothing better
than watching a child have
a break through moment
during a lesson,” DeJong
said.
“Most people don’t realize
how much work goes
into creating moments like
that.”
