College of American Pathologists
accredits first laboratory in Pakistan
University Hospital’s
Clinical Laboratories – the
first laboratory in Pakistan.
With 3,000 CAP requirements,
accreditation is a rigorous
process. A team of
nine CAP inspectors – practicing
professionals qualified
through a CAP training
programme – visited
Pakistan last year to audit
the laboratory’s quality
records, staff qualifications,
validation of tests, equipment,
facilities, safety programmes
and overall management.
The University
Hospital’s CEO Hans
Kedzierski stressed that clinical
laboratory testing is an
essential part of a quality
healthcare service. “Since
most of the decisions regarding
a patient’s diagnosis and
treatment are usually based
on laboratory test results, for
patients, this means timely
and more accurate diagnosis.”
“Striving to meet patient
satisfaction drives the hospital
to constantly review itself
for improvements every
day,” he added.
AKUH is also the only
teaching hospital in Pakistan
that is accredited by the Joint
Commission International, a
gold standard in healthcare
delivery.
“The CAP accreditation
is an attestation that AKUH
Clinical Laboratories has
achieved the gold standard
in laboratory medicine,” said
Shagufta Hassan, Chief
Operating Officer, Clinical
Laboratories and Outreach
Services. “AKUH Clinical
Laboratories has always
applied the highest standards
of quality and this certification
is a manifestation of the
same.”
At a debriefing after the
audit, CAP inspectors
expressed how they were
impressed with the standards
already applied, which made
their work much easier.
“I would like to congratulate
Aga Khan University
Hospital for being the first
CAP accredited laboratory
in Pakistan,” said the CAP
President Richard C.
Friedberg in his message to
the Hospital community.
“We know that the journey
has been the long one, but
we are sure and certain that
the benefits of our accreditation
and your continual
desire to improve your services,
your performance, your
accuracy, your reliability,
and your precision, will benefit
the patients in Pakistan”.
“From its founding, the
Aga Khan University and its
hospitals have aimed to
achieve international standards
in our teaching,
research, and care for
patients,” said Firoz Rasul,
President, Aga Khan
University.
Police said that these
Afghanis did not submit
their cancelled cards to
Nadra and not return to
Afghanistan. Police said
that it was launching a twophase
action against illegal
foreign nationals during
which action would start
against those having no
identity cards or incomplete
residence documents,
while investigation would
also be carried out against
those suspicious persons
carrying NICs.
ISLAMABAD, Feb 28:
Pakistan Muslim League
Nawaz (PML-N) senior
leaders have urged PTI
Chairman Imran Khan to
answer about all the issues
starting from Ball-
Tampering and continuing
till Civil-disobedience
movement.
While speaking to
media personnel in
Islamabad outside
Supreme Court of Pakistan
on Tuesday, PMLN leaders
termed PTI Chairman
Imran Khan a founder of
Offshore Companies. He
said that Imran Khan himself
got no evidence
regarding his own property,
while, he is running his
Party through Foreign-
Funding.
Hanif Abbassi said that
Imran Khan got no evidence
regarding his property,
while, we had worked
passionately for Freedom
of Judiciary and got
locked-up in jails. He
termed the Imran Khan the
biggest thief, by declaring
him a founder offshore
Companies, who is running
his party through
Foreign Funding.
Hanif stressed that the
politics of Imran Khan has
been always based on false
and baseless allegations.
We have also leveled allegations
and provided evidences
against Imran
Khan, now the judiciary
will decide whether Imran
is eligible for doing politics
or not?
Talal Chaudhry said
that leveling allegations
are easy, but is difficult to
respond them. Imran has
been running from the
Election Commission of
Pakistan and Supreme
Court of Pakistan cases
rather than answering
property issues. PML-N
has responded to objections
and questions raised
regarding the last 70 years
in Panama Case, while are
prepared to give any kind
of accountability, asserted
Chaudhry.
PML (N) leader said
that now it is time for
Imran Khan to answer
from the all issues starting
from Ball-tampering,
Party’s Foreign Funding to
Civil disobedience movements.
We are hopeful that
if half of our case is heard,
Imran would certainly be
disqualified.
its parts. He said that terrorists
have no religion and
geographical identity.
Meanwhile, CM
announced formation of
joint committee to her legal
complaints of pathans living
in Punjab.
He further urged the
nation to come for Pakistan
Super League (PSL) final
in Lahore and defeat terrorism.
He said that foolproof
security would be ensured
to avoid any untoward incident.
On the other hand,
Amir Muqam Khan also
termed militants as enemies
of the entire nation.
Sindhi Association of
rigged against native people
defied common sense.
Addressing news conference
the other hand, he added,
millions of foreigners
were encouraged to settle
came closer to population
said adding insult to injury
inclusion of dozens of
other spoken languages in
were aimed to dilute
status of Sindhi language.
He deplored that there was
IDEOLOGICAL lifestyles, varying and different,
and even opposite to each other, later leads
with marital closeness to close clashes and
develops into causes for fierce fights, domestic violence
and separation. Islamic values though not
practiced desirably is something many life partners,
mostly males, demand from their better half, like
hijab or Islamic dressing for example, even if a husband
does not offer Namaaz prayers to Allah or does
not practice religious orders regularly. In love marriages,
much later sectarian issues between followers
of Islam or same religion torment the couple, with
fights and later divorce on fiery contentions of
which sect their Muslim children should follow. And
in inter-faith marriages, religious issues on which
religion, for instance Islam or Christianity, one or
both of the couple or their children should practice
mar a marriage into oblivion.
DIFFERENT social behavior and family traditions
in couples defying certain norms and rituals
practiced by one of the couple lead to tension and
violence, separation or divorce. In these cases, more
than their parents, their children suffer most with
their present and future life all but destroyed. These
factors must be considered by the would be couple
and their families before marriage, and not after
marriage when everything is already done, often
beyond repair or change.
WESTERN, American or European lifestyles are
being copied with pride and glory by considerable
number of Muslims, especially females. Even most
of the Muslims in traditionally old fashioned societies
in the East are fast turning towards and following
the Western trends. Some statistics may help to
decide against it as these two cultures and thinking
of two different peoples are quite contrasting and
even opposite against each other: In the West,
world have collectively failed at offering
solutions It surprises many people in
Europe and North America that tuberculosis (TB)
remains one of the great scourges in human history.
One out of every three people in the world is
infected with latent or sub-clinical TB, and scientists
predict that 10 per cent will manifest the disease
as age and other illnesses compromise their
immune systems. In 2015, more than 10 million
new cases of TB were reported, and almost two
million died from it.
There are three reasons why TB persists: political
leaders do not understand the sociology
behind it, scientists lack an effective paradigm to
attack it, and the rich and famous no longer die
from it.
TB once affected every stratum of society, but
it now afflicts the most vulnerable populations.
This makes it an ideal meme for artists and
activists who focus on social justice. The incidence
of drug-resistant TB is on the rise, because
the health-care systems of poor countries lack the
resources to screen for TB and to help patients
comply with their therapies.
Six countries - India, Indonesia, China,
Nigeria, Pakistan, and South Africa - account for
60 per cent of all reported TB cases. Russia may
be willfully underreporting its TB burden, and
some African countries do not know how many of
their citizens are infected.
Political leaders have failed to understand the
sociological factors behind TB. For example, the
disease's prevalence does not usually increase
after natural disasters, but it did in Haiti after the
2010 earthquake, owing partly to the policies of
the United Nations and USAID. Refugee camps
were crowded, the sanitation was poor, children
were chronically malnourished, and financial
incentives caused many to extend their stay there.
TB afflicts many people who do not vote, such as
refugees, prisoners, and the destitute. Prisons and
slums also serve as breeding grounds for TB, and
young women on the periphery of society can
infect their children. The WHO states that TBinfected
mothers are "associated with a six-fold
increase in perinatal deaths."
Mother Teresa worked for decades with TB's
victims in the slums of Calcutta, and observed,
"The biggest disease today is not leprosy or tuberculosis,
but rather the feeling of being unwanted."
Discrimination, stigma, and isolation are not just
pernicious features of weak societies; they foster
conditions that facilitate TB infections and
increase the rate of diffusion.
in South America, the Caribbean, and Africa, may
IS TWO COMPANY, AND THREE A CROWD?
Marriage And Incompatibilities
(III)
OPINION
according to Divorce Statistics, the divorce rate
early this decade for a first marriage was between 41
percent to 50 percent; second marriages had a
divorce rate of 60 percent to 67 percent; and for third
marriages, the divorce rate was between 73 percent
to 74 percent. About 40 to 50 percent of married
couples in the United States divorced. The divorce
rate for subsequent marriages is even higher. Trends
of living together without marriage and having children
outside marriage is indescribable and unbelievable.
And it is preferred not to mention its statistics,
for moral reasons, lest those figures encourage
immorality in a somewhat different society here.
Therefore, females in pristine culture of modest traditions
and values are advised to refrain from blindly
following something like advanced foreign standards
which is not in their own upbringing, thinking,
way of life and living.
DISTINGUISHING between legitimate rights
and fulfilling it for one and all and not surrendering
to but ending any undue selfish desires or personal
whims and pleasures at expense of other’s life and
living is one solution that must be communicated
and agreed upon by one and all family members and
acted upon accordingly. If any one or more than one
family member is wrong or violate any right of other
family member or members, all family members
ought to address this problem and stop it immediately
and timely, before its fire spread and consumes a
family. Understanding, accepting and fulfilling these
two agreements is just one option among many other
alternatives available to human wisdom that makes a
difference between a life that resembles a hell or a
heaven, those fine lines which make a success or
failure out of a marriage or a family life blessed by
divine and human laws which must be referred to
and abided by one and all at the first place.
TB remains a threat because
the poor don't matter much
be among those who get it right. Peter Drobac,
who ran their programmes, told me that PIH trains
people in small villages to identify the disease
early and to administer treatment properly, as well
as to build policy systems that focus on the underlying
values of self-determination and compassion,
which strengthen any society.
Innovation often comes from introducing
insights and tools from a different domain. Maybe
TB behaves more like cancer than like other infectious
diseases. Daryl Drummond - Vice-President
of Merrimack Pharmaceuticals and one of the innovators
behind the only second-line treatment for
pancreatic cancer approved by the US Food and
Drug Administration - told me that the lung lesions
from a TB infection "share a marked similarity with
solid tumours." In fact, "the TB granuloma has
many of the pathological features of cancer: hypoxia,
a necrotic core, fibrous collagen at the outer rim,
the development of a surrounding capillary network,
and the presence of phagocytic cells."
If Drummond is right, those engaged in the
fight against TB could look for ways in other
branches of medicine to shorten treatment duration,
lower dosing frequency, reduce side effects,
lower costs, and improve compliance, all at the
same time. Drummond added, "We are finding
ways to achieve these things in oncology."
Unfortunately, commercial innovation is slow
to respond to TB. As World Bank President and
PIH co-founder Jim Yong Kim points out, "If you
look at the three major killers - HIV, tuberculosis,
and malaria - the only disease for which we have
really good drugs is HIV. The reason is simple:
there's a market in the United States and Europe."
TB, by contrast, is often thought of as a "thirdworld"
or poor person's disease. Some of the most
profitable and powerful pharmaceutical companies
in the world, AstraZeneca and Pfizer, have
left that "market" behind.
It has certainly been a challenge to many of
history's greatest artists and activists. Henry
David Thoreau, Eleanor Roosevelt, George
Orwell, Franz Kafka, Louis Braille, Wallace
Thurman, and Simón Bolívar struggled with or
against alienation, isolation, and injustice. They
all died of TB.
Nelson Mandela was diagnosed with TB while
serving his 27-year prison term in a dank cell.
Two litres of fluid were drained from his chest,
and he recuperated in a hospital that had never
treated a black patient.
If such eminent people contracted TB today,
how fast could our governments and corporations
find a cure? How many of the 400,000 children
who die from TB each year could grow up, fight
for social justice through art, activism, and commerce,
and inspire the rest of us to do the same?
19 million Yemenis in need
of relief aid: UN official
SANA, Feb 28: The UN
relief aid chief says 19 million
out of Yemen’s 26-million
population are in
pressing need of humanitarian
assistance, warning
that the impoverished
country faces a “serious
risk of famine.”
Speaking during a visit
to the Yemeni port city of
Aden, Stephen O’Brien, the
UN under-secretarygeneral
for humanitarian
affairs, called on the international
community to
increase its funding for lifesaving
operations in
Yemen.
“Today, almost 19 million
people in Yemen need
humanitarian assistance.
Seven million people don’t
know where their next meal
is coming from and we now
face a serious risk of
famine,” O’Brien said.
UNITED NATIONS, Feb
Council is set to vote on
Tuesday on a bid by
Western powers to ban the
supply of helicopters to the
Syrian government and to
blacklist Syrian military
commanders over accusations
of toxic gas attacks,
despite a pledge by Russia
to veto the move.
The Security Council
showdown - pitting Syrian
ally Russia against the
United States, France,
Britain and others - comes
amid U.N.-led peace talks
between the warring Syrian
parties in Geneva, which
A resolution needs nine
votes in favour and no
vetoes by the United
Britain or China to be
adopted.
Russia has vetoed six
Security Council resolutions
on Syria since the
China joined Moscow in
vetoing five resolutions. It
Turkey says wants to be
part of Raqa operation
ISTANBUL, Feb 28:
Turkish President Recep
Tayyip Erdogan said
Tuesday Ankara wanted to
work with its allies to capture
the Daesh bastion of
Raqa in Syria, but without
the involvement of Syrian
Kurdish militia.
“If our allies are really
sincere, we tell them: We
will act with you so long as
we cleanse Raqa from
Daesh and give it back to
its original owners,”
Erdogan said at an Istanbul
airport before leaving for
Pakistan.
But he made clear
Turkey would not fight
alongside Syrian Kurdish
fighters, who are viewed by
Ankara as “terrorists”.
The Kurdish
Democratic Union Party
(PYD) and its armed wing,
the Kurdish Peoples’
Protection Units (YPG), are
seen by Washington as the
most effective force in the
fight against Daesh but are
condemned by Turkey.
Erdogan said Turkey
clearly told Washington it
would never cooperate with
PYD or YPG.
“It is certainly not possible
for us to agree with or
act together with PYD or
YPG,” he said.
Four dead as
plane hits
California homes
RIVERSIDE/Calif, Feb
28: Four people were
killed and two injured after
a small plane crashed into
two homes and sparked a
huge fire in Southern
California.
Riverside Fire Chief
Michael Moore says the
plane occupants, a husband,
wife and three
teenagers, were returning
to San Jose on Monday
after a weekend cheerleading
conference at
Disneyland.
Moore says one of the
teenagers, a girl, was
thrown from the plane,
Cessna 310, on impact and
had only minor injuries.
She was able to talk to firefighters
about what had
happened as she was taken
to a hospital.
12,041. The fatalities, it
said, comprise 2,568 children
and 1,870 women.
O’Brien further said,
“Even before the conflict
escalated in March 2015,
people in Yemen faced
enormous levels of humanitarian
needs stemming
from years of poverty,
under-development, environmental
decline, intermittent
conflict, unpunished
corruption, weak rule
of law, and rampant human
rights violations.”
The official said he was
in Aden to discuss the
humanitarian situation with
members of the government
of former president
Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi,
who resigned in 2014 and
fled the capital, Sana’a, to
Riyadh before coming back
to Aden last year.
O’Brien is also scheduled
to travel to Sana'a
where he will meet with
officials of the Houthi
Ansarullah movement,
which is running Yemen’s
affairs and defending the
nation against the Saudi
military offensive with the
help of army soldiers and
popular forces.
O’Brien further called
on Yemeni warring sides
“to facilitate commercial
imports of food, fuel and
medicine from all ports and
a resumption of commercial
flights” to the Arabian
Peninsula state.
BISHKEK, Feb 28: A court
in ex-Soviet Kyrgyzstan has
jailed a prominent opposition
leader for two months
on corruption charges pending
his trial, security services
said Monday, after two days
of protests in the fragile
Central Asian country.
A statement from the
State Committee for
National Security (GKNB)
said Tekebayev had been
charged with corruption and
would be “held until 25
April” at a GKNB penitentiary
facility.
The arrest of Omurbek
Tekebayev following his
arrival at the main airport
early Sunday triggered a
snap protest in the capital
Bishkek that peaked at a
thousand strong. A smaller
protest of around 500 people
took place in the city on
Monday, calling on
But without providing
specifics, the administration
said that most other
discretionary spending programs
foreign aid, one of the
smallest parts of the federal
budget, saying it would
face “large reductions” in
spending.
Iran Navy test-fires Valfajr Torpedo on final day of drills
TEHRAN, Feb 28: The newest
torpedo to join the Iranian
Navy’s arsenal has been successfully
test-fired as the force
wraps up large-scale drills
spanning over territorial and
international waters.
Tuesday marked the last
day of the final phase of the
maneuvers codenamed Velayat
95, which have been underway
since early February across the
Strait of Hormuz, Sea of Oman
and the northern part of the
Indian Ocean.
Valfajr, as the torpedo has
been named, was fired from
the Navy’s Qadir submarine
towards a surface vessel,
destroying its target.
Similar simulated tasks of
target location and destruction
were performed by various
other submarines dispatched to
within 100 kilometers (62
miles) off the country’s southern
coast.
Separately, anti-submarine
helicopters of naval defense
squadrons, which serve the
Navy’s strategic operations,
practiced patrolling missions,
hitting and destroying sub-surface
targets.
Another chopper, equipped
with rocket and machinegun
firepower, meanwhile, trained
and opened fire on floating targets.
Different types of coastbased
and sea-based drones
have been providing surveillance
and reconnaissance services
to this stage of the drills,
relaying the information gathered
from mock hostile targets
outside territorial waters to relevant
Navy units.
Navy Commander Rear
Admiral Habibollah Sayyari
said, while announcing the
beginning of the last stage of
the drills, “The aim of the
Velayat 95 drill is to upgrade
the country’s defensive capabilities
and send Iran’s message
of peace and friendship to
the regional countries.”
On Monday, the Navy successfully
test-fired new
domestically-manufactured
and laser-guided anti-submarine
missiles, known as
Dehlaviyeh. The latest Iranian
cruise missile, named Nasir,
was also premiered during the
day.
Also assessed in the drills
was the “telemedicine” medical
assistance provision system,
which enables remote
medical diagnosis.
The Islamic Republic faces
foreign-sponsored propaganda
campaigns aimed at portraying
its military power in a negative
light. Tehran, however, constantly
asserts that its military
prowess is in the service of its
defense.

Asia's infrastructure needs
will increase: ADB
ISLAMABAD, Feb 28:
Infrastructure needs in Asia
and Pacific will exceed
$22.6 trillion by 2030, or
$1.5 trillion per year, if the
region maintains growth
momentum, said a new flagship
report issued by the
Asian Development Bank
(ADB).
The estimates rise to over
$26 trillion, or $1.7 trillion
per year, when climate
change mitigation and adaptation
costs are incorporated.
The report, Meeting
Asia’s Infrastructure Needs,
focuses on the region’s
power, transport, telecommunications,
and water and
sanitation infrastructure. It
comprehensively examines
current infrastructure stocks
and investments, future
investment needs, and
financing mechanisms for
developing Asia.
“The demand for infrastructure
across Asia and the
Pacific far outstrips current
supply,” said ADB President
Takehiko Nakao.
“Asia needs new and
upgraded infrastructure that
will set the standard for
quality, encourage economic
growth, and respond to the
pressing global challenge
that is climate change.”
Infrastructure development
in the 45 countries covered
in the report has grown dramatically
in recent decades –
spurring growth, reducing
poverty, and improving people’s
lives. But a substantial
infrastructure gap remains,
with over 400 million people
still lacking electricity, 300
million without access to
safe drinking water, and
about 1.5 billion lacking
access to basic sanitation.
“We have made a decision
Imran Khan on Monday
Sports Reporter
KARACHI, Feb 28:
National ladies champion
Ushna Suhail has defeated
Sara Mansoor in a three-set
final to clinch the Ebrahim
Merchant Memorial
National Ranking
Tournament trophy.
In the well-fought final of
the memorial tournament
played at Karachi Gymkhana
courts, Ushna downed the
Sara by 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. Both
the players played aggressive
and all-round baseline game
from start to finish. Sara
started the match with
authority and conceded just 2
games to win the first set 6-2.
World ranked player
Ushna then utilized all her
skills and international experience
to stop spirited Sara
and won the second set 6-4
after a tough contest. Ushna
BCCI
administrators
challenged
KARACHI, Feb 28: N
Srinivasan-led 22 cricket
associations affiliated to the
Board of Control for Cricket
in India (BCCI) have
opposed the directives
issued by the Committee of
Administrators appointed by
the Supreme Court.
The Vinod Rai-headed
four-member COA had
issued directives that virtually
ended cricket administration
careers of several BCCI
bigwigs by taking into
account cumulative nineyear
tenure at the BCCI and
state association for office
bearers/managing committee/working
group members.
The directive was passed due
to lack of clarity in the orders
passed by the Supreme Court
on January 2, 3 and 20,
according to the COA.
The state units have now
written a letter to the COA,
stating that they have overstepped
in their defined role.
“We disagree with your
views that there is lack of
clarity in Supreme Court
orders. There has been no
recommendations in the
Lodha Committee report or
any Supreme Court order
pertaining to the disqualification
criteria. As far as
tenure is concerned, the
Supreme Court has made it
clear in its January 20 order
that the nine-year tenure is
seperate for the BCCI and
state associations.
"F.E.A.R. : Forget
Everything And Run or Face
status message on Indian
cricketer Harmeet Singh's
whats-app.
The 25-year-old former
IPL player, who, a week ago,
drove his purple Hyundai
car into platform no. 1 at
Andheri Station, now wants
different parts of the country,
the Punjab government
had confirmed on Monday
that the PSL final will be
held in Lahore.
The provincial government
had said that measures
would be taken to
avert any eventuality.
Police and army contingents
are to be deployed in
and around the stadium,
while no parking would be
allowed within 400 yards
of the venue.
Five-tier security —
almost equal to that
extended to heads of states
suggests, I have started
my training and now concentrating
on cricket", he
the authorities have
and other personal belongings,
which were seized at
the time of incident.
"We have also applied for
the return of the car and the
judge has given a March 10
date for hearing", Hamreet's
father, Jasbir Singh, speaking
exclusively said.
"It was my genuine mistake
when I did not notice
the ramp and drove the car
on the platform and when
once it was realised, one of
the coolies there mis-guided
me to take it further and take
turn to bring it down". "But
it was too late then and the
people who gathered there
obstructed my path",
Harmeet Singh adds.
"I was ready to pay the
fine for my mistake but
instead, was treated like a
terrorist". Harmeet's father
also blamed railway for the
— will be accorded to all
players during their travel
to and from the stadium.
Additionally, biometric
identification of all those
coming to the stadium to
watch the match would be
mandatory and no one will
be allowed entry without
showing his or her
Computerised National
Identity Card (CNIC).
Amid heavy police
deployment, authorities
have decided that markets
and hotels around Qaddafi
Stadium will be closed as
part of security measures.
I was treated (by media and gatherings)
like a terrorist, says Harmeet Singh
incident. "The magistrate
did ask why there were no
barriers and the railway
authorities had no answer to
it. Within 24 hours the barriers
were then erected", the
father added.
To avoid media attention,
Harmeet had not gone home
for few days then and
instead, preferred to stay at
his sister's house.
"Harmeet is a star in our
family and we will fight our
case in the court", the father
added.
NORTH SOUND, Feb
28: Courtney Browne,
the West Indies chairman
of selectors, has said that
allrounder Carlos
Brathwaite cannot be
expected to produce the
heroics of the World
Twenty20 final each time
he plays. Browne was
commenting on
Brathwaite's lean form
with the bat in the recently-concluded
Regional
Super50 domestic oneday
tournament, won by
Barbados Pride,
Brathwaite's team.
Since the beginning of
2016, Brathwaite has
scored just 304 runs in
27 List A games at an
average of 14.47, with a
highest score of 46. With
the ball, he has taken 46
wickets at an average of
30.66. Brathwaite, who
was recently made West
Indies' T20 captain, hasn't
enjoyed too much
success in the shortest
format either. In 26 T20s
since 2016, Brathwaite
has managed just 212
runs at 12.47 and 33
wickets at an average of
30.66.
"What you must
understand is this is still
a young man," Browne
told a Caribbean radio
station. "If we expect
Carlos to repeat what he
did in the World Cup
every single time, we're
going to fool ourselves.
Carlos needs to develop
like any other cricketer.
We've dug ourselves in a
massive hole over the
years, there's no quick
fix to our problem. It is
about hard work. It's not
about 'you've had five
6-3 win over Varvara
Lepchenko.
It was a bad opening
day for U.S. players with
Shelby Rogers, who made
it to the quarterfinals of the
French Open last year, the
only success in the singles
on Monday. She beat fellow
American Louisa
Chirico 6-2, 6-2.
Nicole Gibbs, the world
No. 84, went out to
France's Pauline
Parmentier 7-5, 6-7(6), 6-
2, and Jamie Loeb lost to
Germany's Andrea
Petkovic.
Brathwaite can't repeat World T20 heroics every time: Browne
games, you have not performed'
so just throw the
player away."
Browne pointed out
that Brathwaite has
earned a lot of respect
from coaches and captains
over the years with
his attitude and hardwork.
In January,
Brathwaite opted to
leave early from the
Sydney Thunder in the
Big Bash League where
he was signed as a
replacement for fellow
West Indies allrounder
Andre Russell.

'Panama Papers' media
consortium becomes independent
LAHORE,
WASHINGTON, Feb 28: The
investigative reporting alliance
known for uncovering the massive
Panama Papers scandal has
become an independent entity, a
move that may help it expand
globally, the group said Monday.
The Washington-based
International Consortium of
Investigative Journalists has been
spun off the nonprofit Center for
Public Integrity, according to statements
from both organizations.
The ICIJ gained notoriety last
year by publishing leaked documents
from Panama that linked
some of the world s most powerful
leaders, including Russian
President Vladimir Putin, British
prime minister David Cameron and
others to unreported offshore companies.
"As of February 24, ICIJ is a
fully independent nonprofit news
organization, still headquartered in
Washington and still committed to
doing the best cross-border investigative
reporting in the world," its
statement said.
"We believe this new structure
will allow us to extend our global
reach and impact even farther and
build on the lessons we ve learned
and the successes we ve enjoyed."
The statement added that investigative
LAHORE, Feb 28: Acquittal of Sharif family by
Accountability Court (AC) from Ittefaq Foundry reference
has been challenged in Lahore High Court (LHC)
A petition has been filed by a citizen Mehmood
Akhtar Naqvi in LHC taking the plea that Sharif family
was exonerated by AC in Ittefaq Foundry reference but
chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has
not filed appeal against acquittal.
The petitioner further took the ground that NAB
chairman has demonstrated malafide intent by not filing
appeal against exoneration of Sharif family.
He claimed Sharif family is still defaulter on
repayment of loans to National Bank of Pakistan.
'Taliban infiltrator'
aids police killing in
Helmand province
KABUL, Feb 28: At least 13
policemen were killed by
one of their own in
Afghanistan's southern
Helmand province.
A police source told the
BBC that an infiltrator from
the Taliban had allowed militants
into the police station
in the regional capital of
Lashkar Gah last night.
The infiltrator fled the
scene with the Taliban, he
said. A spokesperson for
provincial governor Omar
Zuak confirmed the incident,
but did not provide
details. No group has officially
claimed responsibility.
Lashkar Gah has come
under increased pressure
from the Taliban in recent
months. The city of 200,000
people is seen as strategically
important, and the key to
holding Helmand province.
The province is both a
fertile farming region and a
centre for opium production,
bordering Pakistan on one
end and covering major
routes between cities.
Thousands of people fled
the rural areas to shelter in
Lashkar Gah last August,
before the city itself came
under attack in October.
