Jigging In The United - Shimano

The recent success of Butterfly ® Jigging in the United

States can be attributed to its early development in

Japan during the early 1990’s. Japanese anglers developed

a revolutionary style of deep water jigging that changed

the nature of jigging as it was known at the time. Fishing

as deep as 500 feet, they were using the first generation of

super lines coupled with fluorocarbon shock leaders and

the original jig designs. Shimano was able to successfully

identify the significance of these jigs, and created a new

lure design introduced as the Butterfly ® Jig.

The lure combined with the line and tackle, helped

increase sensitivity to detect bites, and get successful

hooksets. The end result has been an increase in fish

catching percentages, proving that the Butterfly ® Jig

System works in aiding anglers across the globe to

catch more fish!

A variety of species have been caught throughout Japan

and Australia with the introduction of the Butterfly ® Jigs,

and the technique developed to fish them. Anglers in the

United States are enjoying the same success with the

launch of Shimano’s Butterfly ® Jigs, and technique in 2005.

The Butterfly ® Jig system has proven its fish catching

prowess in a variety of different oceans throughout the

world, and has recently generated astounding success

for fisherman across both North and South America.

The Butterfly ® Jig catches more species of fish in more

locations, while providing you an exhilarating fishing

experience!

STRIKE!

The Butterfly ® Jigging System

uses tackle designed to attract

and detect bites from even the

most finicky of fish. It’s an

action/reaction system designed

to allow you to savor the

invigorating feel of every

movement while retrieving the

lure. The feel of the bite is

similar to the feeling of

electricity flowing through the

rod with every movement of the

fish exaggerated, due to the

sensitivity of the tackle.

FOLLOW THESE STEPS

1. Cast the Butterfly ® Jig down the current, wind,

or drift direction

2. Let the jig sink to the bottom

3. Begin retrieving with jigging technique motion

4. Retrieve the jig several yards from the bottom

5. Let the jig sink to the bottom (Repeat steps 4 & 5

several times with each cast)

6. Once line is even, or under the boat, retrieve the jig

and cast down the current or wind to start process over

Jigging Action: The Butterfly Jigging technique

requires a precise motion to impart the right fish

catching action to the jig. This technique works for both

conventional and spinning tackle with the same results.

After the jig is dropped to the desired depth, the rod tip

is facing down. With an upward circular motion, the

rod tip will be lifted up on the upswing of the reel

handle and lowered on the downstroke of the rotation.

The reel retrieve is a tight circular motion that is close

to the body with the rod butt held loosely under your

left armpit. The distance in which the rod tip moves

from top to bottom is approximately 10 to 20 inches

depending on the desired lure action and retrieval

speed. This technique will work on a fast or slow

retrieve depending on how the fish are reacting.

BUTTERFLY ® - LONG Jigging Action:

The Butterfly -Long Jig is a very productive lure and

works well with the standard jigging technique outlined

previously, as well as the following Long jig technique

explained below.

The Long model jigging technique works with both

spinning and conventional tackle. This technique requires

the rod butt held loosely under your armpit depending on

what type of tackle (spinning or conventional). After the jig

reaches its desired depth, the rod tip is facing down. With

an upward jerking motion, bring the rod tip up to the 11

o’clock position. Once up there, wind down taking up the

slack in the line until it comes tight, which will lower the

rod into the starting position then repeat as previously

described. You can adjust the speed of retrieve depending

on how the fish react.

CONVENTIONAL REELS

The ® conventional reels used in the Butterfly Jigging system have three unique features that are

critical within the jigging system. The high gear ratios help impart the action in the jig while retrieving

the lure, plus they keep you tight with the fish during initial hook set and throughout the fight. The high power

factor helps you move the fish during the initial moments of the battle when they are close to structure,

which could result in lost fish. While the narrow frame helps when thumbing the spool, keeping the line more

manageable, and gives the angler added comfort with its size and weight. These reels also have extremely

smooth drags with comfortable handles for long hours of jigging.

Butterfly ® Jigs have been

craved by consumers

ever since they hit the

market two years ago.

We receive numerous

emails through our

website from

customers who

want an opportunity

to share the success

they have experienced

using Butterfly ® Jigs

with Shimano ® :

“ After a morning of trolling with not much luck we gave up and decided to give bottom fishing a shot. It was

almost impossible to get any live bait to the bottom. I forgot that my friend and I brought along our jigging rods

just in case. So we whipped them out and it wasn’t long before we were both hooked up. I had a 10 lb. trigger

fish and he got up a nice scamp. On my second drop I hooked into a beast, a beast of a Gag grouper, in fact it

was my biggest one ever, 47 lbs. Thank you butterfly jigs for saving our day. — Anonymous “

“ Halfway through the trip we decided to fish on a reef in

150ft of water. The first drop on a Shimano Butterfly Jig

resulted in a 25lb Amberjack hook up, but was lost in the

rocks. But the next drop landed a 20lb, soon followed with

15lb to 35lb fish (all amberjacks). These fish kick your butt as

they first strike your jig, we were all pressed up against the

rail of the boat. The whole experience was a lot of fun!!! “

The Battistoni Family

“ It was the best day of kayak fishing I had

ever had. For once my equipment worked

flawlessly and made my day of fishing one to

remember for years to come. My friends were a

bit skeptical about the new concept of butterfly

jigging after I told them about what I read in

Saltwater Sportsman magazine but I can see

how they have changed their opinions after

watching me land the halibut in front of them. “
