Liverpool Sound City 2017 – <strong>Volunteer</strong>ing Opportunities<br />

About LSC<br />

Crowned Best metropolitan festival at the UK Festival Awards, Liverpool Sound City is<br />

an unrivalled festival of incredible live music and arts, capturing the city of Liverpool and<br />

rein<strong>for</strong>cing it as the cultural core of the UK.<br />

Since it’s inception in 2008, Liverpool Sound City has grown into one of the most important<br />

and well-respected cultural events in the UK. Known as the ‘first music festival of the year’,<br />

Sound City sets the standard <strong>for</strong> all music festivals to follow by bringing you the very best<br />

breakthrough acts and major names be<strong>for</strong>e anyone else.<br />

Why volunteer with us?<br />

Working at Sound City is a great opportunity <strong>for</strong> you to get some amazing work experience,<br />

networking opportunities and access to the best programme of live music in Liverpool.<br />

With opportunities available <strong>for</strong> the festival and <strong>for</strong> our conference, Sound City+, we<br />

welcome applications from anyone aspiring to gain experience in all aspects of the music<br />

industry.<br />

Please note, that whilst we will endeavor to respond to every enquiry and application, due<br />

<strong>Volunteer</strong> Roles & Job Descriptions<br />

Festival Roles<br />

Artist Accreditation<br />

Signing Artists in upon arrival at Sound City 2016, and distributing Artist <strong>Pack</strong>s. You will need<br />

to be polite, professional and welcoming to all Artists. You are the first encounter the artists<br />

will have.<br />

All artists will be required to pick up their passes <strong>for</strong> the festival be<strong>for</strong>e their given load in<br />

time.<br />

All Artists are advised in the advance packs to arrive on site at least 2 hours be<strong>for</strong>e the start<br />

of their change over to get accredited and to get to their stage in good time. Upon arrival at<br />

the festival, all acts head to Artist Accreditation where they will be issued with credentials<br />

and shown where to park<br />

Artist Liaison<br />

There are two different kinds of Artist Liaison; Stage Specific, and Artist Liaison Runners.<br />

The Stage specific artist liaison will work with the artist liaison manager to manage and care<br />

<strong>for</strong> artists in their specific venue’s.<br />

Responsibilities of artist liaison are to;<br />

• Greet the artists at artist accreditation and guide them to their venue.<br />

• Assist the stage manager with the running of the venue.<br />

• Assist rider manager with rider allocations.<br />

• Ensure that artist dressing rooms are prepared and maintained.<br />

• Work with the stage manager to ensure that artist sound check/ stage times are adhered<br />

to.<br />

• To ensure the basic welfare of artists <strong>for</strong> their duration at Sound City 2017.<br />

Artist Liaison Runner<br />

The Artist Liaison Runner will be one of a team who will assist the artist liaison manager<br />

with handling of artists across the whole site. The runner’s main responsibility will be to<br />

support the artist liaison manager on site with all artist related issues at Sound City 2017<br />

which may include;<br />

• Greeting artists at artist registration<br />

• Escorting artists to-and-from their programmed stages across site<br />

• Answering general questions <strong>for</strong> artists using FAQ sheets<br />

• Assisting stage managers when needed<br />

Artist Liaisons will greet artists at the Artist Accreditation area, and show them to either the<br />

Artist Green Room, or to the relevant stage across site. Artist Liaisons will then be<br />

responsible <strong>for</strong> ensuring the Artist’s Rider is made accessible to them <strong>for</strong> the artist<br />

per<strong>for</strong>ming on their relevant stage.<br />

General Runners<br />

Runners are a vital part of Sound City; your role is what is known as ‘ad hoc’ so you could be<br />

assigned a number of different duties on each day.<br />

These may include:<br />

- Assisting with transporting artist equipment from the Artist arrival area<br />

- Stewarding a number of our Wider Arts Spectacles<br />

- Providing assistance to the Stage Managers in the event of a Stage Crew member’s<br />

illness/absence<br />

- Stewarding transport on site.<br />

- Welcoming attendees of Sound City at Lime Street Station<br />

- Assisting with our production company in roles such as Site Assistance or Radio Issue.<br />

Wider Arts Delivery Team/Stewards<br />

One way of getting involved with Wider Arts is to be a Steward; you will be helping to<br />

steward and manage a number of Wider Arts events including Visual Spectacles and<br />

Per<strong>for</strong>mances across both days of the Festival. This is a fairly dynamic role and you will be<br />

needed at certain times throughout the day, according to the schedule.<br />

Or you will be put onto the core Wider Arts Delivery Team to assist with all aspects of Wider<br />

Arts, including signing in per<strong>for</strong>mers, looking after the Green Room etc.<br />

Wristbanders<br />

You will be the first point of call <strong>for</strong> Sound City Attendees!<br />

You will be responsible <strong>for</strong> scanning tickets and after a full security check, wristbanding the<br />

attendees upon entry into the festival.<br />

This is a SHORT SHIFT - meaning you will get to see more of the festival.<br />

Greeters<br />

Your role at the festival is extremely important - you will be the face of Sound City+ and the<br />

first person that people attending the festival will have contact with. You will welcome<br />

attendees upon arrival - answering any questions or queries they may have or by pointing<br />

them in the right direction. You must remain polite and professional at all times and greet our<br />

‘Sound Citizens’ with a warm welcome.<br />

Conference Roles<br />

Registration Assistants<br />

The main goal of the registration department is to ensure all guests are registered <strong>for</strong> the<br />

conference on arrival and everybody has the correct passes <strong>for</strong> the day. Throughout the<br />

day, our department’s job is to be the point of contact <strong>for</strong> guests as they arrive at the<br />

conference. We need a team of smiling, approachable, helpful and polite people <strong>for</strong> the<br />

registration desk will be held in the main entrance to print all guests passes and register<br />

them into the conference. There are 3 areas in which you could be working:<br />

§ VIP Registration<br />

§ Delegate Registration<br />

§ Student Registration<br />

Greeters<br />

Your role at the conference is extremely important - you are the face of Sound City+ and the<br />

first person that delegates will have contact with. You will welcome delegates upon arrival -<br />

answering any questions or queries they may have or point them in the right direction. You<br />

must remain polite and professional at all times and greet our delegates with a warm<br />

welcome.<br />

Conference Runners<br />

Runners may be needed throughout the duration of the day to answer any questions about<br />

the exhibitors and label stands as well as get things such as complimentary tea/coffee and<br />

help with the smooth running of panel events and speaker sessions. Some labels and expos<br />

will be arriving the day be<strong>for</strong>e and will require assistance in setting up their area.<br />

This is a fairly dynamic role and will enable you to get involved with lots of different aspects<br />

of the conference.<br />

Green Room Assistants<br />

The green room is the home base <strong>for</strong> all Conference speakers and other VIPs. To those<br />

volunteers assigned to work in this room, you would need act professionally at all times. It is<br />

very important to be approachable, professional, in<strong>for</strong>mative and friendly individual while<br />

working in the green room – as you are the face of Sound City+ <strong>for</strong> our guest speakers and<br />

VIPs.<br />

Stage Managers<br />

We will have an array of sessions and events happening at Sound City+, including our<br />

speaker sessions and panel talks. These stages will need to run smoothly, and Stage<br />

Managers will be responsible <strong>for</strong> the smooth running of these sessions throughout the day<br />

and keeping to the schedule set out <strong>for</strong> your stage.<br />

Area Manager<br />

Part of the uniqueness and charm of our chosen venue, Camp & Furnace, is that we will be<br />

able to have a number of unique areas within the warehouse <strong>for</strong> our delegates to enjoy,<br />

such as the Garden Area, where our food stalls will be. These areas will need to be managed<br />

and you will need to make sure all of our traders are happy and well-attended to.<br />
