amongst friends, old and new. The only

presented by Volkswagen of Palm Springs, 

celebrates the lives, history, and wonderful 

accomplishments the LGBT community has 

contributed in making Cathedral City one 

of the “most livable” cities in America and a 

testament to its perfect equality score by the 

Human Rights Campaign Foundation. The 

festival provides an opportunity to recognize 

the strength in our diversity, appreciate our 

similarities, and stand united for the equal 

rights of all Americans.

Cathedral City Celebrates Diversity 

during the 3rd Annual LGBT Days 

Celebrity guests include Martha Wash, 

Ultra Naté, and Leslie Jordan 

The festival begins with an Opening Night 

Kick-off Celebration at the Civic Center 

Plaza in Downtown Cathedral City, 68-700 

East Palm Canyon Drive, on Friday, March 

24th from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. with a free performance 

by the Palm Springs Gay Men’s 

Chorus, dance music by DJ Galaxy, the 

raising of the Rainbow Flag, and rainbow 

lighting of City Hall. In addition, the celebration 

includes a 7:00 p.m. free performance 

by artist Ultra Naté who has had 

seven #1 dance hits including the songs, 

“Free,” “Automatic,” and “If You Could 

Read My Mind.” VIP seating and post-performance 

reception tickets are available at 

www.CathedralCityLGBTDays.com. 

The celebration also includes a Battle of the 

Bars - Bartender Competition. The battling 

bars include last year’s champion AJ’s 

on the Green & Splash Bar as well as The 

Barracks, Bontá Restaurant & Bar, Chill 

Bar Palm Springs & Scorpion Room, and 

Toucan’s Tiki Lounge Palm Springs. Food 

sales will be offered by Wally’s Desert Turtle 

of Rancho Mirage. 

At 8:00 p.m., attendees will enjoy a variety 

show by the Hostess with the Mostess 

Anita Treadmill and Her Divas. Then at 

9:00 p.m., come dressed in your favorite 

character costume and enjoy “Flashback 

Friday with Jersey Shore” at the Mary Pickford 

Theatre featuring one of the funniest 

LGBT comedies of all time, The Adventures 

of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert.

Saturday, March 25th, the festival brings 

Rainbow RV Camping along with Mike 

Thompson RV for a Special Show featuring 

the “Priscilla RV” at the Festival Lawn. 

LGBT organizations and festival sponsors 

will also exhibit and offer information 

adjacent to the Main Stage Area on George 

Montgomery Trail. 

On Saturday morning at 11 a.m., attendees 

can watch and cheer on their favorite teams 

for the Cathedral City LGBT Days’ Bed 

Race presented by Westin Mission Hills 

Golf Resort & Spa and hosted by Bella 

da Ball. It’s our pride parade with a little 

drama and suspense. Teams of five are 

encouraged to sign-up now, decorate a float 

on wheels, step into some sports shoes, and 

race for prizes. Four individuals will push 

one person sitting on the bed from the 

rainbow start line on Avenida Lalo Guerrero 

and end at the finish line in front of City 

Hall. Confirmed teams include, but not 

limited to, the Cathedral City Fire Department, 

Cathedral City Police Department,

THE DESERT LILY is making makes an 

appearance. This preserve was founded in 

1968 by Tasker and Beula Edmiston who 

together first saw these flowers in 1957 

on Easter Sunday. The Desert Lily bulbs 

lie underground and will often wait for 

many years waiting for enough moisture to 

emerge. Rare, remote and special!. To find 

the sanctuary, take the Desert Center exit 

off Interstate 10, then drive about seven 

miles northeast of town on the Desert 

Center-Rice Road, a.k.a. State Route 177. 

Watch for signs and park carefully.

MODERNISM WEEK 

THE ART OF ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN IN PALM 

SPRINGS 

Modernism 2017 was held from February 

16 to the 26. There were numerous events 

from Bus tours of Mid Century Modern 

homes and commercial buildings, throughout 

the area, films, lectures, historic house 

tours, and the Christopher Kennedy Compound 

in Andreas Hills. The Andreas Hills 

Compound consisted of a 6500 square foot 

home with interior designed by the media 

designer star Kelly Golightly as well as 

Chtristopher Kennedy, along with several 

other designers. 

The Camp temporary structure, near 

Ramon and South Palm Canyon provided 

an overview of the main events along with 

purchasing tickets a gift shop and some 

vendor information. The displays of various 

mid - century items from furniture to 

art, artifacts, and booths for architectural 

and historical clients were at the Palm 

Springs Convention Center. 

The stated advantage of these homes is that 

they can be constructed quickly at lower 

cost than standard construction. 

Modernism presents a wide variety of 

events and activities that are entertaining 

and informative. For those of us who live 

locally it is an event worth participating 

and enjoying.

One notable vendor at the Convention 

Center was a unique new builder, Round 

Dwell Homes. This organization is planning 

to build at least 3 new homes in the 

Palm Springs area. The 6500 square foot 

homes are designed in a circular format 

with individual rooms organized like a pie 

shape. The center provides an open atrium 

for a pool or other desired purpose. The 

construction materials are steel, glass and 

concrete. the roof also provides for an 

open terrace that can hold up to 150 people. 

One of these houses are about to begin 

construction in Palm Springs. The builder 

is looking for other investors or those 

planning to build a new home. The contact

I’ve been nostalgic a lot lately. Nostalgic 

about better times. The past was a simpler 

time and sometimes simple is good. Not 

that there was a nativity to each decade, but 

you do learn as you grow. Look at the technology 

we have these days. For better or 

worse, we are growing. It wasn’t that long 

ago before computers were mainstream 

and their capabilities are endless. 

It was harder to attempt mass 

cyber bully attacking on someone 

you don’t even know. Back then 

it was snorting coke at Studio 54 

and spraying your bangs as high 

as you could. You had to stay 

home for that phone call, so sexting 

your dick pic to a stranger by 

mistake never happens. 

It was the music, and not the 

music being sampled. It was 

Original. With less technology 

requires more creativity. Like a 

Broadway show from decades 

ago man had to be creative while 

technology today makes effects 

much easier. It’s great we have 

evolved, and that takes creativity 

to evolve. So, like in life every little 

step can take you to your final 

destination. Watch each step and 

learn from each step. Improve 

with each step. I learn and 

improve from everything and I 

am constantly evolving. If you 

don’t evolve everyday then you 

become stagnant and you can’t grow. We all 

need to grow, whether it’s growing up and

THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis 

What a week. The Attorney General of the US 

recuses himself from any inquiry into Russian 

tampering with the Presidential election because 

he had numerous contacts with the Russian 

Ambassador and did not tell Congress about it, 

even when asked directly! Seems to be the same 

thing the National Security Advisor was fired for. 

Hmmmmm………. 

Reports now show POTUS’ son-in-law Jared Kush 

also had meetings with the Russians prior to the 

election. And what is the President’s response? 

Obama tapped my phones? What? Really? No 

proof – just accusation. 

But let’s say the Obama administration did, they 

would have had to convince a judge that there was 

enough evidence of a crime in order to get the 

warrant. Seems a bit of a stretch.Also, interesting 

that President Trump doesn’t deny wrong-doing, 

he just accuses someone else of something. 

I’m still taking bets on when he either resigns 

due to health/stress or is impeached by his own 

Republican Congress. 

The Obama’s were in the White House for 8 years 

and not one hint of scandal. Mr. Trump is there 

less than 60 days and there is at least one new 

scandal for every day! 

Congress is beginning to try to repeal Obamacare 

but finding it harder to accomplish that. Amazingly 

solid red Utah has seen a surge of folks 

registering for the ACA. It will be interesting to 

see how the Republican Congress members and 

Senators vote on repeal. There still is no solid plan 

on the table of how they are going to replace it. 

The Trump administration claims now that millions 

of folks are on the welfare rolls. When the 

Obama administration started that was true – 

about 6.4 million. Now – 8 years later just over 

600,000. Seems that the real economic rebirth 

actually did help the average American. 

There are some people ready to hold back paying 

their federal income taxes until Mr. Trump releases 

his tax returns. They are just going to open a 

trust account and put their tax dollars into it and 

pay it when they see the President’s. Interesting 

idea, but probably not practical unless they can get 

millions of Americans to do that simple act of civil 

disobedience. I must admit I am thinking about it. 

Close to home the Palm Springs/John Wessman 

scandal continues to percolate. I’m hearing 

rumors that more indictments are coming soon 

from the feds and not just the district attorney. 

This will be a story for months to come; both the 

criminal case, the civil cases coming soon and 

then whether the city can continue with their 

downtown development plans. 

Cathedral City was just awarded another $1.7 

million grant for their downtown park and amphitheater 

project by the Desert Cinema (formerly 

IMAX). Final design is going on now and construction 

should begin soon. 

With all the rains, we have had it is good to know 

that Palm Springs, Cathedral City and Rancho 

Mirage have all started or set starting dates for 

road construction on Vista Chino, Ramon, Cathedral 

Canyon and Frank Sinatra. While we will 

have some slow down during construction we will 

have some beautiful new bridges and roads. 

Cathedral City will be hosting its 3rd annual 

LGBT Days at the end of March and the 1st Royal 

Caviar Festival on April 1st so keep an eye out. 

Lots of good things happening! That’s it for this 

week. Keep moving forward and RESISTING!
