<strong>DE</strong>NT. THE PSY NEEDS TO COMBINE THE EFFICIENCY OF A CENTRAL ORGANIZATION WITH THE<br />

THE EXTERIOR TWIN-PEAK SILHOUETTE AND GABLES ARE SUBJECT TO RULES OF PRESERVATION. WE<br />
GUT ONE OF THE VAULTED BUILDINGS, MAKING IT A VAST SPORTS HALL, AND JAM THE OTHER WITH THE<br />
MORE INTIMATE PROGRAMS. A HUGE GARAGE CAN OPEN UP THE SOUTH SI<strong>DE</strong> ONTO THE COURTYARD AS<br />
AN EXTENSION INTO THE URBAN REALM. THE CANYON BETWEEN THE TWO VAULTED ROOFS BECOMES<br />

D’HABITATION OF LE CORBUSIER IS REINTERPRETED AND IMPROVED: THE CENTRAL CORRIDORS<br />
ARE SHORT AND GET LIGHT FROM BOTH ENDS, LIKE BULLET HOLES PENETRATING THROUGH THE<br />

UNTIL NOW THE OBSERVATORY HILL HAD ONLY ONE FACE TOWARDS THE CITY. WE SUGGEST<br />
TURNING THE LIBRARY’S EXTENSION INTO A GAR<strong>DE</strong>N LIBRARY, UNIFYING THE NEW FACILITY<br />
WITH THE STREET ON ONE SI<strong>DE</strong> AND THE OBSERVATORY PLATEAU ON THE OTHER. WE DO THIS<br />
BY PULLING THE HILL TOWARDS THE STREET, IN THE PROCESS CREATING A LARGE SLOP-<br />
ING ROOF-FAÇA<strong>DE</strong>, ACCESSIBLE VIA RAMPS OF DIFFERENT GRA<strong>DE</strong>S. THESE ARE CREATED<br />
THROUGH A PROCESS OF CUTTING, IN TURN, PROVIDING THE WHOLE BUILDING WITH A SPEC-<br />
TACULAR VIEW AS WELL AS GREAT INTERIOR DAY LIGHTING CONDITIONS.

THE NEW HOLMENKOLLEN HILL IS EXTENDING TRADITION… TO THE SKY! IT STRIVES TO KEEP<br />
THE FINE BALANCE BETWEEN MAJESTIC AND SIMPLE AND EMPHASIZES THE EXISTING LAND-<br />
MARK VALUES WHILE INTRODUCING CONTEMPORARY MATERIALS AND <strong>DE</strong>SIGN.<br />
CONCEPTUALLY THE PROJECT WORKS WITH 3 STAGES OF VISIBILITY: THE FAR-AWAY PANO-<br />
RAMA, THE ZOOM-IN AT THE FOOT OF THE SLOPE AND THE VIEW OUT FROM THE TOP.<br />
TO EMPHASIZE THE SILHOUETTE THE SHAPE IS SHARP AND SIMPLY CUT.
