MEDIA GUIDE
British Columbia Golf - a member-based organization governed by the British Columbia Golf Association (BCGA)
- represents more than 55,000 individual golfers, in over 300 clubs at 270 member courses. As the governing body
for golf in the province, British Columbia Golf acts as a voice in provincial golf affairs and functions as a resource
centre for the golf industry. Through its affiliation with Golf Canada, BC Golf is also involved in national golf
affairs.
British Columbia Golf as it exists today was formally established on October 1, 2004, following the amalgamation
of the British Columbia Ladies Golf Association (BCLGA) and the British Columbia Golf Association (BCGA).
Although the origins of the Association date back to 1893, British Columbia Golf was incorporated with a mandate
to hold the B.C. Men’s Amateur Championship on April 14, 1922, with J.E. Hall of Vancouver Golf Club elected
the first president. The B.C. branch of the CLGA was not formed until 1932. Other goals of British Columbia Golf
were to encourage regions around the province to form local associations, to conduct a local championship and to
standardize the Rules of Golf among the representative clubs.
Our mission is “British Columbia Golf fosters and promotes the sport of golf, preserves the traditions and history of
the sport of golf and provides a leadership role for the sport of golf in British Columbia”.
Effective November 1, 2010, with the full approval of the Associations Board of Director’s, the British Columbia
Golf Association (BCGA) became known as “British Columbia Golf”, a member-based organization governed by
the BCGA.
Our brand as ‘British Columbia Golf’ is extremely important to us and we would request that all media outlets, golf
facilities and stakeholders utilize the name as such. Any reference to the Provincial Sport Organization for golf
should be ‘British Columbia Golf’. The shortest form that our name should be abbreviated to in any print material is
“BC Golf”.
We appreciate your support in building and supporting our brand.
FACT SHEET
Princeton Golf Club (Par 72, 6,506 yards Boys’/ Par 72 5,643 yards Girls’)
Established in 1928, Princeton Golf Club has developed into one of the B.C. Interior’s hidden secrets. Located at
the Gateway to the Okanagan between Hope and Penticton, this 18-hole course has all the amenities of a resort
course with small town friendliness. It’s challenging terrain among Ponderosa Pines and high elevation views make
it a must play destination for all golfers. The original front nine has numerous dogleg holes that challenge every
golfer’s club selection. The back nine that was built in 2000 is a challenge to all. It has many scenic views with 3
elevated par 3’s and 3 challenging par 5’s. It plays along the edge of the old Amber Lodge Ski Hill and has narrow
fairways with pine trees that can intimidate most golfers. While playing the course look for wildlife everywhere
including deer, elk, eagles, bears, and of course, our infamous badgers.
Princeton Golf Club Ready to Host British Columbia Juvenile Boys and Girls
Richmond, British Columbia (BRITISH COLUMBIA GOLF)—British Columbia Golf’s Juvenile Boys’ and
Girls’ Championships are heading to Princeton Golf Club in Princeton, B.C. on August 21-23, 2012.
Featuring fairways lined with Ponderosa pines, Princeton Golf Club will play as a par-73 5,643 yard course for the
Girls’ Championship compared to a par-72 6,506 yard course for the Boys’ Championship.
Defending his 2011 Boys’ title against a hungry field of challengers will be Trevor Yu of Vancouver. Yu recently
captured the Canadian Juvenile Boys’ Championship in a record setting fashion and would love to add another B.C.
title to his résumé.
Challengers to his reign on top will be 2012 CN Future Links Pacific champion Zach Anderson of Nanaimo, 2012
BC Summer Games silver medalist Diego San Pedro of Richmond and third place finisher at the 2012 B.C. Junior
Boys’ Championship Chris Crisologo of Richmond.
Other notables are Coquitlam’s Kevin Vigna, Surrey’s Marcus Brown, Roy Kang of North Vancouver, Vancouver’s
Johoo Lee and 2011 B.C. Bantam Boys’ champion A.J. Ewart of Coquitlam.
In the Girls’ Championship, Alix Kong will not be defending her 2011 title, leaving the way for the likes of Maple
Ridge’s Keanna Mason, Surrey’s Michelle Kim, Victoria’s Naomi Ko and Richmond’s Janet Zhang to take the title.
Other notables for contention include Coquitlam’s Ally Shin, Vernon’s Mackenzie Barrie and Halfmoon Bay’s
Avery Struck.
Both the Boys’ and Girls’ Championships will be 54-hole stroke play competitions. The Boys’ features a cut to the
low 60 players and ties following 36 holes. Due to a limited field, no cut will occur after 36 holes for the Girls’.
During rounds one and two, the zone and club team competitions will be contested.
First contested in 2005, the Juvenile Girls’ Championship has been captured by a number of Team Canada players
including current members Anica Yoo (2010) and Taylor Kim (2009). Other champions include 2011 Royale Cup
Canadian Junior Girls’ champion Jennifer Yang (2006) and North Carolina State University Wolfpack member
Amanda Baker (2007).
The Juvenile Boys’ Championship was first played in 1974 and since then a plethora of champions have emerged
victorious including notables such as Jim Rutledge (1976), Gordie Scutt (1995, 1996), Team Canada Development
Squad member Kevin Kwon (2009) and 2012 BC Summer Games gold medalist Curtis Chan (2010).
Spectators are welcomed and encouraged to attend. Entrance is free-of-charge.
