On completion, Damen Shipyards Hardinxveld will carry out the final outfitting work of the 5212 RoPax for an African client. Niron Staal has schedule the finished and painted hull to be delivered in just less than 70 days: on 10 January <strong>2017</strong>. Damen Shipyards Group operates 32 shipbuilding and repair yards, employing 9,000 people worldwide. Damen has delivered more than 6,000 vessels in more than 100 countries and delivers some 180 vessels annually to customers worldwide. Based on its unique, standardised ship-design concept Damen is able to guarantee consistent quality. Damen offers a wide range of products, including tugs, workboats, naval and patrol vessels, high speed craft, cargo vessels, dredgers, vessels for the offshore industry, ferries, pontoons and superyachts. Damen offers a broad range of services, including maintenance, spare parts delivery, training and the transfer of (shipbuilding) know-how. Damen also offers a variety of marine components, such as nozzles, rudders, anchors, anchor chains and steel works. In addition to ship design and shipbuilding, Damen Shiprepair & Conversion has a worldwide network of 16 repair and conversion yards with dry docks ranging up to 420 x 80 metres. Damen to build 16 ferries for the Ivory Coast Damen Shipyards Group has signed a contract with Société de Transport Lagunaire (STL) to build sixteen shallow-draft passenger ferries for the Ivory Coast. The contract represents part of a forward-thinking presidential plan that strives to reduce urban congestion and greenhouse gas emissions in the city Abidjan. Abidjan is located around the 100-km long Ébrié Lagoon on the west coast of Africa and therefore water-based transport holds a vital position in everyday life in the area. Furthermore, due torapid population growth and the deterioration of existing ferry services, traffic congestion is a major problem in the city. This multiple vessel contract is part of the Ivory Coast’s government’s increased focus on urban infrastructure improvement. The presidential plan entails provision of cost effective and reliable public transport options for the growing urban population. Construction of all the ferries will take place at Damen Shipyards Kozle in Poland. The yard will adhere to a tightly-planned production schedule to meet STL’s delivery requirements. The first four ferries will be delivered in January <strong>2017</strong> – the rest will be delivered four at a time, every 8 weeks, in three batches thereafter Damen has designed the 18-metre vessels according to the standards of the International Association of Classification Societies. Each powered by two Volvo D5 engines, the ferries will be able to transport up to 130 passengers at speeds of 10 knots. Second Shoalbuster 3009 for SMIT Amandla Marine The second of two Damen Shoalbuster 3009 multi-purpose workboats for SMIT Amandla Marine has been named in a ceremony at Damen Shipyards Cape Town, South Africa. With De Beers Group Services the end client, the Lady Sponsor for the occasion was Mrs Adri Nelson, Supply Chain Centre Manager for De Beers Group Services in Port Nolloth. Named theAogatoa, the vessel is the second of two Shoalbusters 3009 ordered by SMIT Amandla Marine for the De Beers contract and built at Damen Shipyards Cape Town (DSCT). The Shoalbuster range of multi-purpose, shallow draught workboats is designed for all types of operations in inland and coastal waters. The 30-metre 3009S has a bollard pull of 24.5 tonnes and is fitted with a crane with a lifting capacity of up to 1.7 tonnes, making it suitable for towage, buoy-laying, pushing and all-round support duties. Damen Shipyards Cape Town (DSCT) builds ships in Africa for Africa. To date, the yard has constructed & delivered 40 vessels to the African continent form its base in Cape Town The construction of the two vessels made a significant contribution to the local economy with 180 employees employed locally working on the projects and with many of the materials also sourced locally. In addition, 13 apprentices both male and female also played an important part in the build, between them accumulating over 30,000 hours of on the job training.
www.oilandgasrepublic.com NEWS IN PICTURES Damen continues contract with Ivory Coast Turnkey delivery of ferry stations will improve transport infrastructure Following the recent contract signing between Damen Shipyards Group and Société de Transport Lagunaire (STL) for 16 shallow-draught ferries for the Ivory Coast city of Abidjan, the two companies have announced a supplementary contract for eight Damen Pontoons 2404. STL will use the pontoons for vessel mooring and passenger transfer purposes. The eight 24-metre pontoons will be used to construct four separate ‘hop-on, hopoff’ ferry stations that will be capable of mooring a ferry as well as providing a stable structure fit for safe embarkation of passengers.A number of onshore ticket offices will completethe ferry station set up: these will be supplied by STL. Focusing on the ferry mooring parameters of the design, the pontoons will be installed with proven fender systems to ensure the optimal landing of an approaching ferry. The pontoons will be anchored securely by blocks. To guarantee safe transfer of passengers, the pontoons will be equipped with antislip ramps as well as handrails. “These ferry stations will support Abidjan’s busy water-based urban transport network,” explains Damen Product Director P o n t o o n s a n d B a r g e s F r a n k Koppelaar.“With journey times averaging about 10 minutes, it is important to have efficient and stable passenger embarkation. These Pontoons will help STL achieve that.” Next to delivering the client a turnkey solution with pontoons, ramps and ferries, Damen arranged the transport from the shipyard to Ivory Coast. All eight of the Pontoons 2404 were built in just 10 weeks and delivered to the client. Damen Shiprepair & Conversion has a worldwide network of 16 repair and conversion yards with dry docks ranging up to 420 x 80 metres. Conversion projects range from adapting vessels to today’s requirements and regulations to the complete conversion of large offshore structures. DSC completes around 1,500 repair and maintenance jobs annually.
