detailed occupation employment figures to five categories corresponding to our wage

data: white collar, artisans & mechanics, domestics, non-farm common labor

(including miners), and farm labor. We exclude paupers and not classified from our

totals in calculating shares of the labor force. In the very early pre-1841 censuses, the

“not classified” numbers are huge, even though it seems like most were common

labor or miners. Thus, we have not tried to construct occupational shares for 1821 and

even 1831. Excel: Occupation data 1800-1870.xlsx.
