News & Live Production
VSN’s ’s digital systems for newscasts integrate all means necessary for the networked production of programs. The vsnnews system can be based on single-server architectures
for small systems or on architectures consisting of several storage units for larger systems or when a better distribution of all operations in the servers is needed. Either way the
operation is similar.
Modularity, scalability and reliability are key concepts of all VSN solutions. The configuration of vsnnews is the best example. Besides offering noteworthy advantages regar-
ding hardware and software redundancy that prevent any failure points, its open and modular architecture provides full scalability to expand and combine the system with other
manufacturer’s products thus allowing higher effectiveness and profitability.
Networked live production system
vsnnews
One person can manage the live show
vsnnews news is a powerful, entirely integrated newsroom system that allows text/video editing in the
same application.
Optimum workflow is guaranteed from the drawing board until the news goes on air. It covers all
issues in a uniform environment, including rundown planning and creation, resource management,
word processing, video feed recordings, and archive storage, organization, and cataloguing.
The system can be fully integrated with vsnarchive archive system, vsncg real-time titling system, vs-
nprompter, and the automatic web publishing module for news. Shared video and audio editing is
also included in the seamless integration, featuring voice-over from journalists’ computers.
Workflow
Journalists start capturing news content from their PC’s using vsnautorec. During the ingest pro-
cess, the journalist can already start the editing process, not only editing video but also introducing
text and titles through templates.
Once validated, the texts are automatically sent to the prompter or added to the voice-over with
predefined duration (calculated by the software).
Approved titling can be sent to the CG and any changes are synchronized and updated in all work-
stations. Even the studio director can preview the video clips and re-edit them from any PC.
Archive and Publishing
vsnnews publishes news automatically to a website, sending streaming video in WM9,
text and pictures to the different website categories.
vsnarchive is fully integrated into vsnnews. The journalist can start pre-cataloguing
raw material and the cataloguer can finish the procedure and empty the daily servers
by sending material to tape and/or robots, leaving behind a low resolution copy that is
always On-Line.
vsnairnews playlist (automatic mode)
Independent from the editor
The most popular editing systems can be integrated into vsnnews, i.e. Vegas Video, Pre-
miere, Avid, Grassvalley and even Final Cut Pro.
Low resolution editing with effects (vsn (vsnrender farm)
vsnnews allows up to hundreds of journalists to edit low resolution Windows Media videos
simultaneously over the network. Even more, many video effects can be edited in the low
resolution version such as transitions, filters, etc, to be later consolidated in a high resolu-
tion version. Other systems only allow “clean-cut” EDL editing and voice over.

Content Manager - Network editing
vsnnetsharer vsnmacsharer
vsnnetsharer, is the content manager of the entire VSN network. This software allows
journalists, editors, postproduction teams and anyone else, to quickly browse and re-
trieve video material stored on-line in videoservers from their PCs, through a simple
but powerful GUI.
It also allows authorized users to distribute contents to different targets, including the
studio and master control playouts. Given that it is linked with the archiving system,
clips can be retrieved from near or off line storage. Clips are classified into categories
and a powerful text browser uses keywords to find contents in the database. Once
found, video files can be reviewed in low resolution Windows Media format.
Browse by categories
and keywords
Advanced editing stations
vsnnetsharer is the tool used by all NLE’s to register and copy their projects (spots,
flashes or even programs) straight to any VSN playout, either in the studio or in the
master control room. In this way, the use of vtrs, tapes and displacements are avoided.
All footage is transferred through the network in a tapeless TV operation.
vsnmacsharer, which essentially bridges the gap between Mac OSX NLE and VSN,
on Windows systems. It is the content manager for the entire vsn digital and automa-
ted network. It allows journalists, editors and postproduction teams to register, copy
and share materials/files between different servers i.e. vsnmatic, vsnnews and the
daily server, inside the VSN system. All NLE’s can now register and copy their projects
(spots, flashes or even programs) directly to any VSN playout through the network.
Content manager for Mac clients
vsnwires
vsnwires is VSN’s ’s NRCS module for wires reception. It’s integrated with the digital
newsroom solution vsnnews through a single easy-to-use GUI. vsnwires is integra-
ted in the news solution and allows vsnnews journalists the reception (in real time) of
classified news wires from the different agencies, and immediately edit them.
vsnwires server accepts most content providers’ wires in a centralized way. The client
software, installed in the journalists’ terminals, gets that content organized by agency
and category. In case of breaking news, the system shows a visual alarm to check. It’s
compatible with providers such as Reuters, EFE, APTN, Atlas, among others.
External feeds and VTR ingest Tapeless pre-editor
vsnautorec
Programming automatic and periodic recordings
vsnautorec autorec is the ingest system that allows simultaneous recordings from tapes, satellite feeds
and/or studios, using automatic or manual mode. Regular recordings from news agencies can
be programmed in a Reclist with the exact hour and date.
vsnautorec director controls an audio/video switcher and intelligently routes the input video
signal to one available recording station. Captured material, stored in servers by categories,
supports simultaneous multi-editing shortly after the recording is started. Pre-cataloguing du-
ring live recording is possible, too.
vsnautorec capturer are dedicated ingest stations to capture video in standard formats:
DV25/50/100, MPEG-2 IBP, MPEG-2 I-frame, MXF, Quicktime, etc.
The system can be configured for any number of ingest channels in a modular, scalable way.
vsnrecpro
Ingest module for shared VTRs in the newsroom
vsnrecpro is a dedicated software solution to allow journalists to manage the shared
vtr ingest process from their workstations. They can create batch capture lists and the
system takes care of the queue. The selected fragments are immediately available for
everyone in the central server.
vsnscenes
vsnscenes, , a low-cost pre-editor, allows low resolution proxy preview in variable speed
straight from the chosen format (XDCAM, P2, EX, etc.) and selection of a list of clips or
sub-clips. This process generates an EDL. The equivalent high resolution content will be
automatically uploaded to the shared videoservers thus allowing instant emission from
playouts or editing from NLEs.
If the VTR is connected to a sole workstation, the system manages user queues and
controls MXF devices from any remote terminal.
vsnscenes scenes also enables the management of the associated metadata, fully automatic
disk content upload, creating EDLs on the lo-res content, voice-over and import of the
EDL created by the cameraman or deck operator. Finally, the system allows the selec- selec-
tion of MXF as the standard format for the rest of the tapeless workflows, or a loseless
transcoding to AVI for the selected hi-res files.
vsnscenes scenes is VSN’s new demonstration of how to adapt and open the development to
the state-of-the-art technology made by third party brands. This solution is compatible
with all tapeless media.
vsnscenes scenes implies a revolution in the way live programming is produced, due to the
extensive use of the new random access media along with the managed production
systems in a transparent and easy way.
Maxium efficiency for
file transfer transfer in tapeless
workflows

Live production and News play-out solution
vsnairnews
vsnairnews playlist (automatic mode)
vsnairnews is an automated play out videoserver that allows several journalists from
different PCs to simultaneously work on the same rundown to be broadcasted. Any
authorized user can make changes in the rundown in real time, from any PC. These
changes will be immediately updated in all the vsnairnews terminals connected.
vsnairnews sends text to the teleprompter and commands the CG to insert titles. If
the sequence of the rundown changes, it automatically changes the texts in
vsnprompter and vsncg in a synchronic way, without any operator intervention.
Automation: the rundown is not a simple playlist of video files. It allows camera INs
with duration for intros. External feeds and VTRs can be operated manually or auto-
matically with an external keypad control. Video mixers can be controlled through a
RS422 connection. vsnairnews can automatically control the video mixer, apply selec-
ted transitions, and video effects for camera-video transitions in a fully unattended way,
without any operator, or the sequence could be run even by the anchor himself.
Duration clocks tell directors the current program duration, time under runs, and over
runs, and allow adjustments and changes in the rundown up to 5 seconds before each
material goes On Air. It can also operate as a slave playout controlled by third parties.
vsnairnews is the multiformat playout, independent of the compression of the video
files in the rundown, whether it be DV25/50/100, MPEG-2 IBP, MPEG-2 I-frame, MXF,
QT, MPEG-4, M-JPEG, WM9; SD and HD. All files can be placed in the same rundown
without rendering or transcoding of any kind.
It is also compatible with the most popular NLEs: Vegas Video, Adobe Premiere, Avid,
Grassvalley, Final CutPro, etc.
vsncg
vsncg is the titling module compatible with vsnairnews. It can operate as an automatic
news titling device controlled from the rundown.
It can work simultaneously as a fast easy-to-use Character Generator, manually operated.
Journalists can easily introduce titles from their PCs using predefined templates.
vsncg allows basic titling along with 3D animated logos, including fade and wipe effects
and 2D moves. vsncg supports Unicode characters and is compatible with more than 800
languages such as Arabic, Asian, Russian and Greek, among others.
vsncg latest versions now feature many new templates for sports, analog/digital clocks,
3D effects, animation import and a template editor.
vsncg can be enhanced with an external module ( (vsndatacollector) able to create tic-
kers, sports templates, contests, sms tv, votes, etc. through importing external data feeds,
XML, RSS, etc. It is now much faster and more powerful (unlimited real-time layers).
Multilayer template editor
vsnprompter
vsnprompter is the teleprompter module integrated with the news playout. Like the
titling module, it receives texts edited by the journalists and reflects and synchronises
all changes in the rundown.
It also displays the playout counters, in case the anchor wants to run the program.
vsnprompter supports Unicode characters and is compatible with more than 800 lan-
guages such as Arabic, Asian, Russian and Greek, among others.
vsnprompter can perform integrated operation in the VSN network or work as a
stand-alone solution, with operator. It includes pedals (or jog-shuttle) and a keypad,
also a plug-in for Microsoft Word. Optionally, it can be acquired with a metallic structure
and a TFT.
Template database management

Archive & MAM
vsnarchive
vsnarchive is the Media Asset Management module, featuring an advanced DAM (Di-
gital Asset Manager) software that covers all stages of ingest, catalogue, HSM storage
(whether it be on-line, near-line or off-line), browsing, search and retrieve processes.
vsnarchive allows users to browse and preview thousands of hours of low resolution
video from any network terminal or through Internet. Materials in high resolution can
be stored either in a near-line data tape robot, in a HD storage unit (H.264 version) or
in off-line video tapes with bar-coded stickers.
The solution can be adapted to any particular (existing) robot library, storage unit or
tape archive. It’s based on open technology (all standard video file formats and SQL
databases) which facilitates any necessary migration process.
Cataloguing
Journalists can start pre-cataloguing the high resolution images stored in the videoser- videoser-
vers. Adding general metadata and key words is done through the use of templates.
The proccess includes DRM and segment cataloguing within the same material.
Archiving
vsnarchive creates a low resolution copy of the contents to be kept always on-line. The
flexible workflow adapts itself to each customer via user rights and permissions.
Partial search & retrieve
The browsing module installed in the clients’ PCs allows complete database searches of
phrases and key words using logical operators. Users can preview the selected content
in low resolution. With IN and OUT points they can perform a partial retrieval of the
relevant segments, no matter the final destination of the content (Hd, data tape, etc.)
