Glossary of Terms
Planet: a celestial body which is in orbit around the Sun, has sufficient
mass to assume hydrostatic equilibrium (a nearly round
shape), has “cleared the neighborhood” around its orbit, and is not a
moon.
Orbit: the curved path of a celestial object or spacecraft around a
star, planet, or moon, especially a periodic elliptical revolution.
Gravity: the force that attracts a body toward the center of the
earth, or toward any other physical body having mass. For most
purposes Newton’s laws of gravity apply, with minor modifications
to take the general theory of relativity into account.
AU (Astronomical Unit): For general reference, we can say that one
astronomical unit (AU) represents the mean distance between the
Earth and our sun. The AU is approximately 150 million kilometers or
93 million miles.
Farenheit: of or denoting a scale of temperature on which water
freezes at 32° and boils at 212° under standard conditions.
Diameter: a straight line passing from side to side through the center
of a body or figure, especially a circle or sphere.
Rotation: the action of rotating around an axis or center.
