ILADO -
Words by Donna Tweedale
34 Little Flea

Although my child
bearing days are
done, I so miss being
pregnant, I can get
total bump envy. That
connection to your
child before you’ve
even met them is incredibly
precious. I
was at my most body
confident and dressed
to embrace the bump,
Not full flesh baring
Beyoncé Instagram
announcement you understand, but
you get the gist.
During my pregnancy, had there
been beautifully delicate jewellery
PARIS
that could make the bond between
bump and I stronger still. I’d have
been all over it.
Launched in 2015, ILADO-Paris created
some pieces inspired by the ancestral
jewellery known as the ‘Bola’
or ‘ Angel Caller’. These are pieces
that have been celebrated within the
Mayan culture where legend has it,
that the soft sounds created by the
protective amulet, as it rolls over
your bump soothes and comforts
the baby in the womb and after birth
where the familiar soothing sounds
will help to calm the baby.
I caught up with Sandra and Celia
from ILADO-Paris to find out more
about this incredible brand.
Sandra Zeller & Celia Bonahon
The name, ILADO, stems from the African
Peninsula where you first became
friends at the age of 10. So, how did
you get from two friends who met in
Nigeria, to the business
partnership we see today?
Yes, we became friends in
Africa when we were 10.
Twenty years later, we were still friends
and neighbours, working as marketing
director and fashion buyer in Paris. We
happened to fall pregnant at the same
time and during our maternity leave we
started to dream about creating our own
business… a dream that has now become
a reality!
You’ve created the first modern interpretation
of this tradition, How did
this idea evolve into ILADO?
Celia and I discovered this beautiful tradition
by reading an article on the Internet
when we were both expecting our first
child. But the only pregnancy necklaces
we could find were neither aesthetic nor
refined. That’s why we decided to create
ILADO-Paris, a collection of fashionable
Olivier Baby
& Kids
Words by Donna Tweedale
72 Little Flea

The Peter Pan collared dress I wore the
day my parents brought my new baby sister
home. I was 5. I remember that dress
in great detail, A middle child, It was a
hand me down from my elder sister and
my prized possession. I can remember
how it felt brushing on my knees, The
print, How it crunched when I put it on after
a fresh iron. It plays a part in so many
of my childhood memories.
Needless to say this isn't an opportunity
for me to share my childhood wardrobe,
but it's memories such as these that
form the ethos behind Olivier Baby &
Kids. A Childrenswear label that evokes
those feelings. Timeless pieces that are
inspired by nostalgia. Investment pieces
to be loved, each made individually with
the scope to be handed down and loved
all over again.
We met with Emma of Oliver Baby & Kids
to swoon over some beautiful liberty
print...
You've recently returned from Paris, It
must be such an exciting time showcasing
the collection's you've been
working on?
We always enjoy our trips to Paris - not
least because it is such a beautiful city! It
is lovely to see what all the other brands
are working on and we always get encouragement
hearing the enthusiastic
response towards our own collection we
are showcasing for the first time. It is a
wonderful opportunity to meet new buyers
and see our existing ones who travel
from all over the world.
With 6 children between you and
your sister, that is some product testing
team you have! It must be such a
wonderful feeling to experience your
own children in pieces you've created,
and through your social media seeing
Olivier Baby & Kids being enjoyed and
loved by other families?
Little Flea
There is nothing like seeing a photo of a
happy customer in one of our designs. It
is what keeps me going. Instagram is a
fabulous resource for this and I love seeing
the very reason I started this business
in beautiful photographs of children and
babies, wearing pieces from collections
old and new. Cashmere is practical and
luxurious as well as versatile and with
our 6 children (and the 12 more between
the others in our team) I see
living proof of this on a daily basis.
Your collections ooze luxury, Velvets,
100% Cashmere, Liberty print in such
rich jewel like tones. You have a signature
style, which stays true to your
inspirations. The Occasion pieces are
the epitome of luxury. And yet, you've
managed to make such luxury so versatile
and wearable; that's no mean
feat!
How do you try and maintain that balance
between luxury and wearable
comfort?
I have always believed children need to
enjoy wearing their clothes and that children
should behave like children, have
fun, run around outside, climb trees, build
dens, explore, and whether they are in
a woodland, on the beach or in the city
their clothes should be able to withstand
whatever environment they are in. That
said, it is always
fun to design
clothes that are
appealing for
both parent and
child alike. The
fabrics we use
are very versatile,
soft cottons
and cord and the
softest cashmere
too. Cashmere
can withstand the
muddiest field,
wettest walk and
messiest eater!
We pride ourselves
in our classic cuts and simple knits
but always like to include an element of
fun, for example our mask jumpers from
last season, and ever popular lightning
bolt hoodies and jumpers from the previous
season mean that a super hero mad
3 year old is happy to swap the polyester
suit for quality cashmere instead.
The knitted rompers and range of bonnets
in both A/W and S/S collections
are enough to make my ovaries weep!
So classically beautiful in their detail,
Was it here that your knitting and your
design process creating Olivier Baby &
Kids, evolved?
I first had the idea for creating Olivier Baby
& Kids when my Bulgarian nanny at the
time (my now Head of Production) taught
me how to knit when I was pregnant with
74 Little Flea

my second daughter Rose. I really
wanted to knit some cashmere
bonnets, booties and mittens
similar to ones I had when I was a
baby. The demand at the school
gates from my friends made me
stop and think that perhaps I
should take my designs further
and start a childrenswear brand. These
accessories have formed part of our core
baby range and have evolved over time
to encompass a more modern feel with a
nostalgic nod to my 70s childhood. Our
newest Liberty print bonnet, The Edith
Bonnet, launches this Spring Summer
and comes with a scalloped edge, I think
it might be my favourite of all.
We're now into SS17, Share with us
what pieces you'll be putting your little
ones in this season?
My favourite pieces for my three children,
for Mabel my 17 month old I shall be putting
her in our Pepper Pink Millie set and
Edith Bonnet. Rose (6) will be kitted out
in our bright yellow jemima skirt and the
matching Pepper blue Dinah shirt and
Amber, my eldest (8) loves the Liberty
Tabitha Dress paired with our new Berry
coloured Louisa Cardigan
Those are gorgeous choices, Thank
you so much for sharing. I love how
your brand evolved from encouragement
from other Mama's around you
too, Your collection is beautiful.
Pippa loves a sweatshirt and she’s also
got a thing about monochrome, so
when she was introduced to cool label
Rebel & Lola, she was hooked!
Rebel & Lola burst onto the scene last
season with a range of cool prints and
homeware for kids rooms. This season
they’ve expanded into clothing
where they’ve taken their signature
monochrome aesthetic and created
a range to compliment the essence
of the brand. This cool alphabet print
sweatshirt is so soft and cosy making
it perfect for those transitional
months when it’s too warm for a coat,
but still a bit chilly for a t-shirt. Ultra
soft inside, this sweat will be a staple
for Spring and will pretty much go
with anything too.
Pippa’s Picks
The small collection
consists of the Alphabet
are coming for AW17, including
this awesome
peace sign black and
white skirt that we are totally
in love with. However,
I’m afraid you will have to
wait until later in the year
Scandiborn
From their corner of the Peak
District; Grace and James Tindall
scour independents from all
over the globe to bring us the
very best in Scandinavian design.
Scandiborn is very much a family
affair with the Tindall squad working
closely together. James on the
daily operations, Grace in buying
and sourcing, with little Harry at
the forefront fuelling the inspiration.
Regular travels to Scandinavia
and searching for pieces for Harry
highlighted to Grace the lack
of Scandi inspired design available
in the UK. We're not talking
IKEA, We're talking products created
from small independents,
exclusive pieces from interiors,
clothing, toys and baby necessities.
With a clear passion for this
style and a frustration of the lack
of choice in the UK for this aesthetic,
Grace and James decided
to take the bull by the horns.
Donna Tweedale finds out more...
It takes a hell of a lot of courage to one
day say. Yes. Let's do this. Let's get to
work on our dream. Tell us about that
moment that really got the fire in your
belly to realise Scandiborn?
It really does! It was definitely a combination
of factors that came together at the
right time to give us the final push to just
get on and do it.
Maternity leave gave me some much
needed headspace to think about my career,
the life we wanted to build post kids
and it also allowed me to formulate the
98 Little Flea

usiness plan that I had thought so much
about when I was pregnant. Simultaneously
James got made redundant and
we decided (against the advice of pretty
much everyone!) to invest the very small
pay out, take a leap of faith and go for it.
And thank goodness you did!
Thank you, I’m so glad you see that too.
The first thing I wrote in my notebook
when I started to build the idea of Scandiborn
was ‘who are we?’ I often go back
to that page and take a look at those key
words when I’m undecided about a product
or brand. Everything we sell has to
knit together with that clean, Scandi aesthetic
that we adore. Most of our brands
are sourced from Scandinavia, with the
majority from Denmark – we attend CIFF
kids fair in Copenhagen twice a year which
always provides us with huge amounts of
inspiration for the coming season. We
Your range of beautifully curated pieces,
have a very clear aesthetic, particularly
in their tones of blues, monochrome
and blush. Many of your
products exclusive to Scandiborn, It
must take you all over trying to find
those pieces that fit the voice of Scandiborn?
in the north of Denmark, who have
the showroom of dreams! We also stock
a number of British, American and Australian
brands, a lot of whom I’ve found
through Instagram.
A strong ethos and being ethically
aware is something that is clearly important
to you, particularly the ‘You've
Got This Mama' Mug that you created
in support of Coppafeel which has
been a huge success, You must be so
proud!
friends. We were lucky enough to
partner with Coppafeel who are an
amazingly energetic charity who are
at the forefront of getting younger
women to check their boobs regularly.
Their founder Kris is a real inspiration
and we feel very honoured to be
contributing just a little bit towards
their journey.
Absolutely, it’s really important for us to
know where our products have come from
and also to be able to support other small
businesses owners. The ‘You’ve Got This
Mama’ Mug has been a hit right from the
start, all mums have moments where they
feel like they can’t hold it all together and
need a reminder of how amazing they
are doing. There’s a real feeling of women
supporting women and I love writing
all the notes to go out with the mugs as
a lot of them are bought as presents for
That's amazing, Thank you so much for
sharing Grace. Such an inspiration to
be true to who you are, what you love
and to get a dream set in motion.
Food Glorious Food!
The wonderful Abi Waters has returned once again to cook us up
some mouth watering recipes for the whole family to enjoy. Easy
to make and yummy to eat... now that’s our kind of grub!
Baked Frittata
Ingredients
Serves 4-6 people
1–2 sweet potatoes, peeled and grated
2 big handfuls of spinach, chopped
100g feta, chopped
8 eggs, beaten
10 cherry tomatoes, halved
Grated Parmesan, for sprinkling (optional)
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
124 Little Flea

This baked frittata is so filling and wholesome
it will brighten up even the dullest
summer day. It’s also perfect for packing
into a lunchbox for the kids school lunch
or for taking on a picnic.
Preheat the oven to 170°C (Gas 3). Lightly
grease a 20cm round silicone cake
mould.
Put the sweet potato, spinach and feta
in the greased mould. Season the beaten
eggs with salt and pepper then pour
it over the top. Use a fork to move the
ingredients around in the mould a little
so that they become mixed together.
salad.
TIPS:
• Feel free to vary the combination of
ingredients to your personal tastes –
mushrooms and bacon are a great addition.
• I use a silicone cake mould as it makes
it much easier to turn the frittata out
once it’s baked, but you can use any
baking dish really as long as it is well
greased.
• This frittata is delicious served either
hot or cold.
Add the halved tomatoes and top with a
sprinkling of Parmesan if using.
Bake in the oven for 25–30 minutes until
cooked through and golden on top.
Leave to cool for a few minutes, then
turn the frittata out of the mould and cut
into 4–6 slices. Serve with a crisp green
Sunshine Flapjacks
Ingredients
Serves 12-16 squares
50g dried mango, chopped
50g dried pineapple, chopped
100–150ml apple juice
125g unsalted butter
40g golden caster sugar
5 tablespoons golden syrup
225g porridge oats
2 tablespoons milled flaxseed
70g mixed seeds
50g sultanas
115g dried apricots, chopped
126 Little Flea

Tip the mixture
into the prepared
tin and use the
back of a spoon to
press and flatten
the mixture into
the tin. Bake in
the oven for 25–30
minutes until just
starting to turn
golden around the
edges.
Who doesn’t love a flapjack? So many
possible variations that you can’t possibly
fail to find a combination that hits
the right spot. I chose to inject a bit of
summer into these filling flapjacks with
some tropical fruits, but you really can
use any combination of flavours to find
your perfect match.
Preheat the oven to 150°C (Gas 2).
Grease and line a 23 x 30cm baking tin
(or any other tin close in size to this).
Put the dried mango and pineapple in
a small bowl and pour over the apple
juice. Leave to soak for 15 minutes.
Put the butter, sugar and golden syrup
in a saucepan and gently heat for about
2–3 minutes until everything has melted,
stirring occasionally.
Put all the remaining ingredients in a
large mixing bowl. Drain the mango and
pineapple and add them to the mixing
bowl. Pour the melted ingredients into
the bowl and stir everything together
until completely combined.
When you remove
the tin from the
oven, use a sharp
knife to score the
flapjacks into 12–16
squares (depending on what size you
want them). Leave to cool completely in
the tin, before turning out and breaking
into squares.
TIPS:
• you can swap the golden syrup for
honey or maple syrup or use a combination
of all three.
• try adding flaked coconut for an added
tropical flavour.
• these fruity flapjacks are a great lunchbox
treat for all the family.
• I left nuts out of these flapjacks for
a packed lunch snack, but chopped
pecans in particular would be another
great addition.
Lamb & Harissa Meatballs
with Tabbouleh & Tzatziki
These Moroccan-flavoured baked meatballs are packed with flavour and work perfectly
with the zesty quinoa tabbouleh and the refreshing tzatziki.
128 Little Flea
Ingredients
Serves 4-6
For the meatballs:
500g lamb mince
1 red onion, finely chopped
1 garlic clove, finely chopped
3 teaspoons harissa paste
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 egg, beaten
salt and freshly ground black pepper

For the tabbouleh:
200g quinoa and bulgur wheat mix (or
just quinoa)
400ml water
1/2 cucumber, finely chopped
4 ripe plum tomatoes, finely chopped
a bunch of flat-leaf parsley, chopped
a bunch of coriander, chopped
a bunch of mint, chopped
juice of 2 limes
juice of 2 lemons
olive oil, for drizzling
For the tzatziki:
1 cucumber, grated
5 tablespoons Greek yoghurt
1–2 teaspoons mint sauce
(depending on how minty you
like it)
1/2 teaspoon garlic granules
a handful of mint leaves,
chopped
Little Flea
129

Preheat the oven to 180°C (Gas 4).
First make the tabbouleh. Rinse the
quinoa and bulgur wheat to remove any
excess starch or dust, then place in a
medium saucepan and add the water.
Bring to the boil, then cover and leave
to simmer for about 5 minutes. Take the
pan off the heat, put the lid on fully and
leave to steam for 5 minutes or until all
of the liquid has been absorbed and the
quinoa and bulgur wheat is cooked. Tip
the cooked grains into a large bowl, fluff
up with a fork to break any clumps up
and leave to cool completely.
Add the remaining ingredients to the
tabbouleh, drizzle with olive oil and season
with salt and pepper. Mix everything
together until combined. Cover and set
aside in the fridge until ready to serve.
To make the tzatziki, put the grated
cucumber in a bowl. Use your hands to
squeeze the excess moisture from the
cucumbers and pour the liquid away. I
usually just squeeze the cucumber to the
side of the bowl and then carefully tip
the water out. Add the rest of the tzatziki
ingredients and mix together until completely
combined. Season to taste and
add any more of the flavours as needed.
Cover and set aside in the fridge until
needed.
To make the meatballs, put the lamb
mince in a large mixing bowl and add all
the remaining meatball ingredients. Use
your hands to mix everything together
until completely combined. Shape small
amounts of the mixture into golf ballsized
meatballs and place on a baking
tray.
You should make around 20 meatballs
depending on the size.
130 Little Flea

Bake the meatballs in the oven for 25–30
minutes, turning them halfway through,
until browned and cooked through.
Serve the baked meatballs with the tabbouleh
and a good dollop of tzatziki.
TIPS:
• this recipe is great as a packed lunch
as it is just as delicious eaten cold the
next day.
• you can vary the grain used in the tabbouleh
– try using couscous or cauliflower
rice (grated cauliflower steamed for a
few minutes).
• the tabbouleh really benefits from being
made in advance to give the flavours
a chance to combine. Just give it a good
stir to mix everything together again
before serving.
• I sometimes add feta cheese to the
meatballs for another flavour – just mix
100g crumbled feta cheese in with all
the other meatball ingredients.
thing I craved the most! Having my children
and getting married was so important to me.
I got married at 20 and had a honeymoon
baby. Our second son was born 20 months
later. So by the age of 23 I had two babies
under 2. I LOVED every single second of
marriage and motherhood.
I opened up my own Nursery School with my
best friend Sally Cotter when I was 25. The
word entrepreneur wasn’t even in my vocabulary,
I just wanted to work around bringing
up my boys!
With regards to my style I have always loved
to be unique and never wanted to conform
growing up. I have always loved Art and Design.
I have loved reinventing myself, my
wardrobe and my home over and over.
mean we all move at such a fast
pace. I spend lots of time researching
trends and I am very reactive to
my customer’s wants and desires.
It’s clear from your ‘About’
page, you have a clear presence
in the store itself, and offer your
customers the opportunity to
buy into you and your passions.
When you place an order, as a
customer you get a real sense
of being part of something, a
community. How important is it
to you to maintain this personal
approach?
hunting out new designers must be such
an exciting part of your role, What are
your main points of focus when buying
for Southwood Stores?
The biggest challenge for me buying for SS
is to ensure I am finding brand new designs
and new emerging designers. I
also love championing smaller
home-grown designers too. Social
Media is amazing and I couldn’t run
my business without it but it does
This is VITAL to my whole concept.
SS is about an experience and a
community. When people come to
visit my showroom the kettle is always
on. I want people to connect
with me and become loyal customers. I set
out wanting to offer something unique. Even
though we are primarily online I wanted to
create an ‘old fashioned’ shopping experience.
What I mean by that is that I wanted
every single customer to feel welcome. That
feeling I used to get
going to our local
corner shop growing
up. The shop owner
remembers your
name, reserves items
for you. An extension
of this is the community
I have created on
my social media. We
offer the workshops
in a ‘real space’ so
our online customers
can come and really
be part of the Southwood experience.
Supporting other women in business is a
separate branch to my business but one I
feel super passionate about. Life is way too
short to live feeling lost or unhappy in a job
you hate. I also truly believe there is room for
all of us in business and women should support
one another to reach our goals faster.
STORE
FOCUS
My GRAY clothing line was born not long after
I opened my store. When my Mum was
diagnosed terminally ill she was so brave.
Many of the words on the sweatshirts are
highly influenced by her to begin with.
In my dark days watching my Mum die I just
needed to remember to BREATHE.
At a time where women empowerment
is such a strong movement, You’re a real
advocate for women feeling strong in
making their choices in both their lifestyle’s
and/or businesses. Your GRAY line
and jewellery collaboration with Chambers
& Beau reiterate these messages,
Tell us a bit about your favourite pieces?
But I also think the pressures on women and
mothers nowadays is overwhelming at times
for them. My children are now young adults
and I think it was much easier when mine
were little. I want women to celebrate their
super powers. Every single woman is an expert
in something, hence the word MAVEN
was one of my favourites! With these messages
being so important, to be wearing
them whether that be around your wrist or
across your T can be the reminder we need
to give ourselves to take more time for ourselves.
Hayley offers workshops and events within
the Southwood Stores space to build
support for small businesses and women
in business through her Social Hub. You
can find more information on these events
and details on the Social Hub through
Southwood Stores or through Instagram
