General Introduction

BETH MYRIAMS

Now listen to Me and write these words:

establish Our Beth Myriams everywhere you can.

Lift the oppressed and help the orphan.

Protect Me, rescue Me from the gutter, shelter Me and feed Me.

Unload My burden and fatigue; support Me and encourage Me.

All that you do to the least of My brethren you do it to Me…

I bless the supporters of My life.

May they remain virtuous and all-loving.

I am with you.

IC

(Jesus, March 27, 2002)

In 1998, Vassula was inspired, through a vision, to initiate a

project to feed the poor in the Holy Land. In the vision, she was

shown a ‘narrow’ doorway in which our Blessed Mother was

standing, holding the baby Jesus. A short time later, a series of

seemingly independent happenings came together to help this

project to begin.

Still Vassula sought confirmation of the Lord’s will, through opening randomly the scriptures. She

and a friend fell upon passages pertinent to Vassula’s discernment, including “Come to Mary's

house.”

Vassula had foretold to the people around her that she would receive an Icon of The Blessed Virgin

Mary and exactly as she saw it in her vision, and this eventually happened. A Romanian lady who

lived in Canada had painted an icon of Mary holding Jesus and was inspired, without knowing

about Vassula’s vision, to offer it to her. When Vassula received the icon, she was astonished to

recognise in the icon the same image of Mary and Jesus as in her vision. It is this icon which can be

seen on this page.

Vassula also had a thought, perhaps inspired by the Holy Spirit, that after Jesus’ birth in the stable,

the Holy Family needed a place to stay. The meaning of the vision of Jesus and Mary in the

doorway could be that this had been their home before they fled into Egypt. Mary’s appearance and

the inspiration to feed the hungry might well come from Our Lady’s desire to return the charity

extended to the Holy Family when they were given shelter after leaving the manger.

Now many ‘Beth Myriams’ have opened around the world in several countries. The main thing that

the people will be served in these Beth Myriams will be Love... the Love of Our Lord Jesus Christ

as we endeavour to serve Him by serving one another... but also a warm dinner and sometimes

clothing, sometimes medical treatment and sometimes schooling. Not all are called to work in these

projects, but Jesus does teach us to be generous with our love in other ways. On May 23, 1986,

Vassula’s Angel, Daniel, said to her: “collect money and give it to the poor needy souls; ... be

generous.”

To the question “Who is giving this food?”, Vassula, inspired, tells helpers to reply: “Jesus and

Mary, His Mother, are giving you this food!”

BETH MYRIAMS

Argentina

Beth Myriam Mendoza: This Beth Myriam, the first in

Argentina, began in Juanita’s own house, where her husband

Carlos, and three teenage daughters would help in serving

and feeding elderly people and about 40 children from

around the area; bathing them in their bathroom, since many

of the children did not have water in the slums where they

live. The needs of the area are many since 50% of Argentina’s

population lives in poverty.

In May 2006, a house located close to Juanita’s was rented where she and

the TLIG volunteers now welcome the elderly, pregnant women,

infants and children. 3 meals are served

from Monday to Friday to 180 poor

people. The sick are taken to Dr.

Octavio’s home not far from the

Beth Myriam. The TLIG volunteers

give Sewing, Knitting, and Art

lessons for adults, and 4 teachers help the

children and teenagers with their schoolwork, bringing very

positive results in school.

Bangladesh

Beth Myriam Dhaka: The Beth Myriam in Dhaka opened 6 years ago, in December 1999, by

serving 10 needy people from the nearby slum areas. Today, there are 100 people of all ages -

needy men, women and children - that are coming daily at noon for a hot meal from the slum area.

They are served lunch according to a weekly balanced menu with adequate calorific content that

consists of beef, chicken or fish curry, accompanied by the traditional rice, vegetables, salad and

dhal, banana for fruit.

42

BETH MYRIAMS

Since March 2001, this Beth Myriam hosts also a Bangla school class every

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, from 4.00-

5.00pm, for 25-30 children from the slums, between the ages of 5 and

12 that attend to receive the basic education of reading, writing and

arithmetic. An English class for children is functioning as well at the

same days and hours as above. Milk and biscuits are given to all at

the end of every class.

Medical support, clothing, shoes,

mosquito nets, etc. are also among the

material help provided to anyone in

need from the guests of the Beth

Myriam.

Those who come to eat are encouraged

to say their own prayers before the meals.

Out of respect for their religious practices, the

Beth Myriam helpers prepare special lunch boxes for the poor people to

take home during Ramadan. Vassula visited this Beth Myriam in Nov. '05 and was very pleased to

see the joy of both those serving and those being served.

Brazil

Beth Myriam Belo Horizonte: It serves 700 dishes of soup and bread daily.

These people are spiritually assisted and supported by the

Prayer Groups. Every Wednesday the prayer group meeting

takes place with the people in need taking party. The

biggest difficulty is to get daily meals ready because all

the food comes from donations.

Beth Myriam Belo Horizonte II: Like any other capital or big city in Brazil, a huge part of Belo

Horizonte’s population lives in very poor areas called « favelas ». This Beth Myriam is situated in

one of the poor districts of Greater Belo Horizonte : Vila Nossa Senhora de Fatima, in the

Aglomerado da Serra. Sanitary conditions are basic, clean running water is not available to many,

paved roads and sidewalks are few. Problems in urbanization, health and security are far from

being solved, subjecting the community to much drug-related violence. In the rainy season, the

population lives under constant threats of mudslides and floods.

The TLIG Prayer Groups of Belo Horizonte were called to open a second Beth Myriam in their region,

for there is a great need to help the poor. This BM started attending to the needy on the 3rd of

BETH MYRIAMS

September 2007, welcoming close to 400 poor people daily, from Monday to Friday. 800 bowls of

nutritious soup and bread are served to the poor, many are thankful to take soup home for their

children and sick members of their family.

Catholic and Protestant BM Volunteers work together, thankful to serve the Lord and their poor

brothers and sisters of the Villa Nossa Senhora de Fatima community. A TLIG Prayer Group has

been formed within the BM, 12-15 people come to pray regularly on Thursday mornings.

Beth Myriam Brasilia: This Beth Myriam is located 40 kms. from downtown Brasilia, Brazil's

capital city, in the neighbourhood of Recanto das Emas. Ma. Laire and the TLIG-BM volunteers

help 60 families and 200 children of all ages, with food, clothing and school material. The majority

of the needy who frequent the Beth Myriam are poor single mothers and their children, sometimes

numbering 10 or 11 per family. Many young children and teenagers are left in the Beth Myriam

while their mothers work, 3 of these teenagers are mentally handicapped.

The TLIG volunteers hold classes every Tuesday, Wednesdays and

Thursdays to teach the youth to crochet, do patchwork, jewellerymaking,

and painting on T-shirts. Free medical assistance is given

once a month, including distribution of medicines. The adults and

children are taught about God and have become part of the TLIG

Prayer Group which meets at the Beth Myriam

every Wednesday and Saturday. During all

these activities, the poor people are served

warm meals and snacks.

Thanks to donations given through the

Beth Myriam International Fund, the roof

over the patio of the house has been

repaired. Presently, the 200 children and 60

mothers are safely sheltered from the sun or heavy tropical rain, and

enjoy chatting or playing since they feel so much protected and loved

in this Beth Myriam. One room in the house has been refurbished and is

now a Clinic used by the doctor and nurse who give free medical assistance

and medicines once a month. Furthermore, thanks also to donations, this

Beth Myriam now has the means to serve nutritious meals. Currently,

the needy are given a good breakfast and a complete hot meal for

lunch, three times a week. In addition, many take food in lunchpacks

for the elderly or the sick at home, and many others take baskets

with basic groceries home for the remaining days of the week. Ma.

Laire and the other TLIG BM volunteers are grateful for the

financial help they receive, and continue their work of love within

their Beth Myriam family.

Beth Myriam Goiânia: This Beth Myriam is located 190 kms. southwest

of Brasilia, the capital of Brazil. The house is in a zone of drug

dealers, people are very poor, and helpless against the violence

around, murders are an everyday happening. Constant surveillance is

needed to keep the house safe from vandals and robbers, especially

at night. The Beth Myriam caregivers, Ma. da Gloria and Alessandra,

43

BETH MYRIAMS

and the TLIG volunteers are extremely courageous to do the work that

they do. The children that come are very young, left to themselves

while their parents leave to work in the city very early in the morning

and arrive very late at night.

Thanks to donations received through the Beth Myriam International

Fund, hot, nutritious meals with meat, sometimes chicken, vegetables, rice

and beans are now served to 80-100 adults and children every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. On

Saturdays, 120 adults and children come to pray and learn about God, and share a meal. Everyone

who comes to this house knows that it is Our Lady's Home, they are given the Messages of True

Life in God. The books are distributed to those who can read and passed on to others. Many more

are flocking to the Beth Myriam where they know they will be heard and cared for by Our Lady

through the generous hands of the volunteers. They feel free to share their many problems and find

the time to pray in thanksgiving, and in hope, to ask Jesus and Our Lady to help them in the

difficulties of their lives.

Beth Myriam Joinville: This Beth Myriam once again opened its doors in

April 2006, in another area of the city of Joinville, in the southern state of

Brazil, Santa Catarina.

It is maintained and supported by the TLIG Joinville Prayer Group, of

which 16 volunteers take turns in the kitchen. Everyday, 110-140

lunches are served to the poor. Several activities are held throughout the

week: every Monday, at 7:30 pm, a TLIG Prayer Meeting is held for the

needy who frequent the Beth Myriam; on Thursday, at 2 pm, another TLIG Prayer

Meeting takes place with children from 2-14 yrs. old . Holy Mass is celebrated in the Beth Myriam

once a month. On the premises, seminars and Professional Training courses are

given to the poor to help them better their chances for work.

The TLIG Prayer Group of Joinville is very happy to do this marvelous

apostolate, one feels God’s Presence constantly through the generosity of

the volunteers and the gratefulness of the humble people whose many needs

are filled in this House of Mary.

Egypt

Beth Myriam Cairo: This Beth Myriam is located in the city of Cairo. Two

cooks help Sr. Carina prepare the meals for 165 poor people, twice a week.

True Life in God volunteers also assure the basics to the poor families. A

TLIG Prayer Meeting is held once a week, families come to eat and to pray,

sharing many spirit-filled moments.

BETH MYRIAMS

Kenya

Beth Myriam Mombasa: About 50 orphans from infants to 18 yrs old are

offered a home as well as 3 meals a day. Five loving women and

volunteers look after these children aged from a few years to 18 years of

age. Medical assistance is supplied by the government.

Japan

Beth Myriam Tokyo: In December 2005, after Vassula’s visit to Japan in November, Satoru and

his wife Jacqueline went out to the streets of Tokyo and found many homeless people living in the

parks of this busy metropolis. They started bringing food once a week, and when they were joined

by volunteers from the TLIG Prayer Group of Tokyo, they were able to feed

more people, more often. They would simply choose a tree to hang up the

icon of Our Lady, then set up their tables in the park and start feeding the

homeless people.

During the past few months, the TLIG BM volunteers have been able to

feed about 100 poor people once a week in Yoyogi Park’s covered area

furnished with tables and chairs. The volunteers and the homeless people

have become friends, talking together after the meals and

sharing about their different problems. There is no mention of religion, but

the volunteers simply inform the people that come to eat that this food

comes from Our Lady. For those who want to say thank you for the

food, the volunteers teach them to speak to Our Mother in Heaven in the

short Hail Mary prayer, which many by now have memorized and

willingly say before eating.

BETH MYRIAMS

Holy Land

Beth Myriam Bethlehem: The situation in the West Bank is worsening everyday. Our BM volunteers

are working carefully to distribute food and necessities to 30-35 Greek Orthodox and Latin

Christian families living in dire poverty. They help the orphans, the sick, the crippled, and the retarded

in these very poor families. Most Palestinian Christians in the West Bank have no work, the

situation does not allow them to continue working in Jerusalem. The foreign aid to Palestine unfortunately

does not trickle down to Palestine’s Christian population, making life unbearable and forcing

those with some means to leave their homes and villages, and choose to immigrate to other

countries.

Lebanon

Beth Myriam Beirut: More than 40 people are being fed once a week

in this small apartment, on the first floor of an old building, not far from

the centre of town. They can take a shower and find clean clothes, rest

and talk. They start distributing meals to 20 persons in a new Moslems

region at Rouaissat in collaboration with the SISTERS OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD who are

assisting them in many of their needs.

Mexico

Beth Myriam Monterrey: Monterrey is located in the northeast of Mexico, 200 kms. from the

United States border. It is the 3rd largest city in Mexico with a population of 4 million people.

Since 2006, the Beth Myriam of Monterrey has been offering breakfast to 250 poor people, the relatives

of patients in the nearby hospital: Clinica 25 IMSS. These people accompany their sick

BETH MYRIAMS

from cities all over the region, and their “Casa de Maria” is there to fill many of their physical and

spiritual needs during their stay in Monterrey. The TLIG Prayer Groups of Monterrey feel very

strongly the need to serve Our Lord and Our Lady, and inspired by the

Messages of True Life in God, continue serving the poor in their part of

the city, also sharing prayers and comfort with them, and others in the

surrounding neighborhood.

In October 2008, through the help of donations, work began to enlarge

the Dining/Prayer room. Everything was done in a week's time, allowing

the feeding of the needy to go on uninterrupted, helping them with not only

food but with prayers and spiritual help. With much joy, the Beth Myriam caregivers feel the presence

of Our Blessed Mother and the loving help of Our Lord, giving them the strength to continue

their beautiful work. The poor are thankful to receive the care and the love of God through the generosity

of the BM caregivers.

Peru

Beth Myriam Barranco: 120 lunches offered daily, from Monday to

Friday. In Lima, 40 children and 80 adults are evangelised and

receive one hot meal daily, from Monday to Friday. Free medical

consultation and medicines are offered every Monday. When

donated to the Beth Myriam, clothes are provided. Other activities

include: free haircuts twice a month, every first Saturday of the

month there is TLIG Prayer Meeting.

Philippines

Beth Myriam "On Wheels", Mountain Province: Travelling to

distant tribal villages in the mountainous north of the Philippines, food,

clothing, and free medical assistance are supplied to the villagers, and

TLIG Prayer Groups are formed. 250 meals are brought once a week to

the poor in 8 villages and to the local prison. Through the work of the

TLIG Tuao volunteers of this Beth Myriam, the Lord has established TLIG

vineyards (Prayer Groups) in the Municipal Jail and in 8 far-flung villages where the poorest of the

47

48

BETH MYRIAMS

poor really dwell. Because they have been roaming daily, feeding these villages with both food for

the body and food for the soul on a weekly basis, they called their work "Beth Myriam-on-

Wheels". Sometimes during typhoon season, when bridges fall, the volunteers are forced to cross

rivers by boat to get to some of the villages.

A delighted Vassula encouraged them to continue following the call of God to read, meditate and

live the messages so that Beth Myriam becomes the fruit of what they learned from the TLIG

Messages. She also paused once in a while to personally talk with simplicity to individuals

especially among the poorest.

Beth Myriam Tuau, Cagayan: Situated in a clinic, the Beth Myriam of

Tuau offers totally free medical assistance to all those who need it.

Moreover, a meal is given every Friday to about 45 people, children

and adults.

This Beth Myriam feeds poor people of all ages, they read the

Messages and are also part of the TLIG Prayer Group in Tuao.

TLIG is very much alive in the enthusiasm and hard work of Dr. German

de Laza and his wife Josie. After the TLIG Holy Land pilgrimage in 2000

they said: Yes - to Jesus, they opened a Beth Myriam blessed and inaugurated solemnly by His

Excellency Archbishop Diosdado A. Talamayan, DD in September 2000. His free medical services

for the unfortunate together with TLIG evangelization have reached the mountains of the next

province, Kalinga Apayao.

Divinely powered by regular prayer meetings and personal contemplative

reading, the couple and the TLIG-BM volunteers have been surely taking

these words of our Holy Mother seriously: abide only in Faith, Hope and

Love, let these be your fruit filling your heart God-is-among-you to provide

your soul all that it lacks; the Vineyards of the Lord shall multiply and They

shall yield enough fruit to feed thousands. (22.9.89)

Beth Myriam Manila: One afternoon in May 2005, about 70 squatter

children gathered at the basketball court of a compound in Felix Huertas

St., in the center of Manila. TLIG volunteers prepared snacks for them

and were surprised to discover that they came because someone had told

them that they were going to be taught to pray. Since that day up to the

present, 30-130 of them have been coming once a week to be fed, pray,

sing and play. In June 2006, the compound’s owners generously donated the

use of a 3-storey unit for the TLIG volunteers to care for the squatter children. It was then that the

first Beth Myriam in Manila came to be.

This street leads to one of the two state-owned Maternity Clinics in this city of 12 million people.

The number of births are so many that the inadequacy of the Clinic’s facilities obliges 2-4 laboring

mothers to share a hospital bed. Not far is the City Jail with a squatter area

surrounding it where the wives and children of the inmates live, some

children are left to survive while both parents are in jail.

In this atmosphere of drug dealers and users, petty thieves and

seamen living in boarding houses, the Beth Myriam, a haven of

peace and love, welcomes 150-200 squatter children of all ages

every Saturday from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. The children are happily

occupied with drawing and painting lessons, singing Praise songs, dancing, and are fed a hot

nutritious meal. They are also taught how to pray and are given Catechism lessons. The BM

volunteers also assist 50 poor families in their enrollment into the parochial program for free

medical and dental benefits. Other activities include daily Prayer Meetings with children of

different age groups and their mothers. Recently, student volunteers from a private school, St.

Mary of the Woods, have adopted the Beth Myriam for their Outreach Program for the Poor,

helping the TLIG-BM volunteers in their work.

Venezuela

Beth Myriam Guatire: Four years ago, "Casa de Maria" Guatire was born and has been serving

80-120 hot meals to children, women, drug addicts and elderly alcoholics. This BM is located in

the parking lot of the local Parish Hall. The kitchen where the meals are cooked is a room in the

Parish house. TLIG volunteers teach them to read and write, and free medical care is offered by

volunteer medical doctors, including a member of TLIG Guatire. Lately, Yocoima and her

companions have been helping some children and young adults get examined for the HIV virus,

accompanying them to doctors' consultations, and covering their expenses. Some have been tested

positive, the TLIG volunteers pray with these children, giving them hope and helping them put

their trust in the Lord.

This Beth Myriam is celebrating its 4th anniversary on March 18, this year. The caregivers and

poor ones who come to share a meal are eagerly looking forward to a feast of prayer, love, and

blessings. They thank Our Lord and Our Blessed Mother for the kindness and generosity they are

given.

Beth Myriam Propatria, Caracas: Situated in the center of

Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, this Beth Myriam has been

active for many years now, and is supported by the True Life in

God Association of Venezuela and the TLIG

Prayer Groups. Twenty TLIG volunteers

are available, rotating their time to help.

The Beth Myriam feeds, gives Reading

and Writing lessons for adults and children,

bathes their guests, and gives them clean

clothes. 350 meals are served daily from Monday to Friday. Medical

assistance is given to about 40 persons daily, medical

supplies are donated by the employees of the U.S.

Embassy in Caracas.

Recently, the TLIG volunteers organized a day of Spiritual

Recollection for the poor that frequent their Beth Myriam, and

invited 4 generous medical doctors who offered the needy free

medical assistance. Two hairdressers were on hand to cut the hair of

49

the poor in the Beth Myriam. Many of the people who come to be helped are elderly beggars who

live in the streets, turning to Our Lady’s House for the only decent food they eat, and for the only

health care they can get. The TLIG volunteers take them to hospital when they are in need of

medical help.

Beth Myriam San Cristóbal: This Beth Myriam is situated far from the capital, Caracas, and is

geographically located close to the border with Colombia. It was started 3 yrs. ago and helps

mostly elderly poor people. Rosario de Mexeira, the BM responsible, is a 65 yr. old widow who is

full of love for God. She has been a TLIG reader for a long time and has made her way to attend all

5 of Vassula’s meetings in Caracas.

With the help of TLIG volunteers, 25 full meals are served every Monday and Wednesday. They

shelter 5-10 poor and homeless people, some staying for just one day, and others for up to a week.

They gather and recycle used clothing which are distributed to the needy in the cold mountainous

areas and also to those in warmer zones.

TLIG supports the Dhammarajika Orphanage

Vassula was personally invited by the Venerable Suddhananda Mahathero, President of the

Bangladesh Bouddha Kristi Prachar Sangha, to receive the “Atisha Dipankar & Visuddhananda

Peace Gold Award” this year, 2003, on the occasion of the 94 th birthday of the late President and

founder of the Buddhist Monastery. The Peace Gold Award 2003 ceremony was held on Sunday

23 rd February at the Buddhist Monastery. The Buddhist monks nominated her for this Peace Award

as a distinguished personality in recognition of her great contribution and her efforts for

establishing inter-religious harmony and promoting world Peace among all peoples and faiths.

On February 26 th Vassula was invited to visit the Orphanage which the Buddhist monks have run

for 31 years now. Since 1972 this Orphanage has been providing food and medical care for

thousands of orphaned and destitute children. Right now 600 children are depending on the

generosity and love of their fellow people, and on the charity of individual donors, as many aid

organizations have discontinued their donations.

Vassula was asked to say some words to everyone present. All the children were there and many

distinguished members of the Dhammarajika Buddhist Monastery. Everyone was touched deeply

by her words of encouragement and support.

Two months after Vassula’s visit to the Dhammarajika Orphanage, in April 2003, TLIG started to

support this Orphanage - to help these helpless children so that they will be able to grow into ablebodied

persons in the years to come.

TLIG Builds and supports school in Bangladesh

In July 2000 a request was made from some people in Kulun village close to Dhaka to build a 2classroom

school for the first graders that had to walk about 3 Km (just under 2

miles) to reach the nearest mission school. The people that asked us were

close local friends and later became devout followers of the Messages of

TLIG and one of them, Xavier Pereira, is promoting the Messages in the

areas around Dhaka. The decision was taken to help them out and build a

school for the little ones, which by mid-2001 was almost completed, and

the children were attending classes there already.

In Feb. 2003, Vassula and Carlo Sami from Switzerland had the

opportunity to visit this village and see the school running. Sami

volunteered to donate the desks and benches needed for the school.

In July 2003, TLIG also started paying the

teachers’ salaries, as the previous

organization supporting them stopped and it

wasn't right for the children if the school

were to close for lack of teachers’

salaries.

Once a week the TLIG Messages are read to

the children by the teachers and discussed and prayed.

TLIG Primary School

In March 2007, Vassula was invited to visit Kulun again for another special occasion: 4 students of

our humble TLIG school - still without electric current! - had received government scholarships to

continue with their studies. We arrived in Kulun with Stefania Restivo, a very good friend from

Italy that was visiting us for a couple of weeks.

A program with a number of athletic events for the 3 first classes was prepared that we all enjoyed.

Later, once all the teachers and the children of the 1st TLIG Primary School gathered, in a very

simple and informal ceremony, I was truly honoured when asked to give out the scholarships to the

1 boy and 3 girls. But to all of the rest of the children 1 we gave a token, so all would be happy.

There are no words to describe the joy of everyone involved so this school project could take off

and be completed, accompanied by so many blessings! There are no words to thank our Jesus Who

never lets down anyone! And there are no words to thank as well Mrs. Liduvina that motivated and

encouraged us financially to expand the initial school so more children may receive education and

be close to their families and village as well.

3 rd Symposium on Ecumenism at Farfa, Italy

14 th - 17 th November 2001

In November, 2001, Vassula was invited to an official symposium on

ecumenism at a place called Farfa, outside Rome. It was held by the

sisters of St. Birgitta. Vassula was to represent the point of view of unity

from a lay person. Each participant had to speak for an hour to be

followed by a debate with questions. The whole committee consisted of

Roman Catholics and Lutherans. The Catholic Bishop of Sweden was

there as well as many professors of theology and Monsignors and different

clergy. The four day symposium had many speakers all of whom were

theologians and clergy apart from Vassula.

When Vassula had finished her talk and was waiting for questions to come

in and a debate to start, the theologian who led the symposium was

weeping. He then said: “This sermon on unity we have just heard was the

most fervent sermon I have ever heard in my entire life. Therefore, I do

not want any questions to be raised here, because this was a prophetic

voice speaking and when it comes to prophecy, we listen and carry out

what is asked from us.”

THIRD SYMPOSIUM ON ECUMENISM AT FARFA

God’s Calling

to His people

by Vassula Rydén

Lord, I pray as You have prayed: may we all be one, as the Father is in You and You in Him, so

that the rest of the world may believe it was the Father who sent You. For this we pray too for the

sheep who are not of your fold, that they too will listen to Your voice. We pray that the world may

come to love You from today onwards. Amen.

Introduction

First and foremost, I thank our Lord for this spiritual gathering, because it is a grace given by God

for all of us, giving us opportunities to expand His Kingdom, bringing us closer into reconciliation.

So any delicacy from our part to restore the tottering house of Christ touches the Lord profoundly.

Any step towards a spiritual unity and all heaven rejoices! Any prayer offered for the restoration of

Christ’s Body, and the Father’s wrath diminishes. Any gathering in His Holy Name for unity and

His blessings are poured out on those sharing these meetings. For this I give glory to God who never

fails us.

In this hour I would like to share with you an introduction of the role of a lay person in the Church

and then three themes. The first theme is on metanoia, fruit of humility that leads to reconciliation

and unity, the second one is about our sin of division and the third one is on the role of the Holy

Spirit in leading us to unity.

When I received this invitation to speak about an ecumenical spirituality I was reluctant to put into

words my particular experience with God. I do not dare to formulate a classified “spirituality” out

of my own intimate “conversations with Christ”. Rather, I will leave the freedom of God who lifted

the prophets and who spoke and revealed Himself “in many and various ways” (Heb 1,1) to

convey again His message through a weak hand, a member of Christ’s Body. In this sense, what

follows is a different kind of testimony of the mystical tradition of the Church. Therefore, what you

will hear in this hour is not an academic theology discourse, simply because I am not a theologian,

but rather a lived example of a lay witness to unity when called by God for His service.

I, myself come from the Greek Orthodox Church. In our book for the doctrine of the Orthodox

Church, book I, published in 1997 by Mr. Trembelas, on p. 79, it reads: “Revelations are defined as

an act taken by God by which He notifies His reasonable creatures about the mysteries of His existence,

nature and will, according to their limited intellectual capacity…” etc. It will be worth reading

p. 78 where it describes the necessity of God Himself guiding His people. There are many

more references on the role of the laity in our Orthodox Church, but limited time prevents us to study

them in detail here.

THIRD SYMPOSIUM ON ECUMENISM AT FARFA

It is known as well that the second Vatican Council has underlined how important it is that the laity

contributes to spreading the Good News through the various gifts God bestows upon His Church.

In Lumen Gentium, the Council clearly states that the laity participates in the prophetic office of

Christ. Christ fulfils this prophetic office, not only by the hierarchy but also by the laity. He accordingly

both establishes them as witnesses and provides them with the sense of the faith and the

grace of the word (LG 35). Every lay-person has a part to play in this service of the Gospel according

to the charism God has given him and through those gifts given to him, is at once the witness

and the living instrument of the mission of the Church itself, “according to the measure of Christ’s

bestowal” (Eph 4,7). It is obvious then from what the churches assess, that the laity have a very

important role to play in the world and that the charisms the Holy Spirit bestows upon His people

always are for the service of the community and for the benefit of the Church.

From the very beginning of this call, our Lord by grace approached me with royal prodigality, addressing

me in poetry since religion and virtue were His sweet converse during these last sixteen

years with me. Without any merit I was called and I responded; Scriptures say: “I believed, and

therefore this is the reason why I speak” (2 Co 13). Then I was asked by the Lord to acknowledge

Him and by acknowledging Him He showed me His Cross of unity.

One of the first words of command of Christ to me were these: “Which house is more important,

your house or My house?” I replied: “Your house, Lord.” Then He said: “Revive My house,

embellish My house, unite My house.” I was struck with helplessness and I felt miserable. I

lamented: “I do not know how to do all of this. I know nothing!” Christ then said: “Remain

nothing; I want a nothing and in your nothingness I will show My authority, My power and that I

Am; so die to yourself and allow My Holy Spirit to breathe in you.” From thereon He asked me to

walk with Him but after having gone through many spiritual fires. In this way I received the seed of

God without any merit. It is written: “No one can have anything unless God gives it to him.” (Jn 3,

27)

This work of the Holy Spirit is printed in eleven volumes and translated in 40 languages 1 . In these

spiritual writings we see how God is giving us opportunities to be perfect and be able to reach

deification through His divinity and become god’s by participation. The fruits of this work are

numerous, because they too are coming from the Lord and every good thing comes from the Lord.

It is worthwhile mentioning one of them. Today all over the world exist more than a thousand

ecumenical prayer groups that were formed through these inspired writings by the name of “True

life in God”. These ecumenical prayer groups consist of different church denominations that gather

together to pray for unity and reconciliation of the churches. From these groups, nine charity

houses have opened to feed the poor and the needy. They are called Beth Myriam that means House

of Mary. There will be others that will open by the grace of God, in the near future and will become

active as well.

Through God’s grace I have been invited in sixty countries so far, to testify the great works of the

Lord. This was done in more than 700 meetings, to Roman Catholics, Orthodox and to various

other churches. I could not refuse either to address our other brothers and sisters who are not

Christians. Our Lord opened as well a door for the non-Christians, and so I was called to address

the Jews, as well as the Hindus, Muslims and Buddhists, who, after addressing them the Word of

God, found their freedom and reconciled with the triune God, asking for the sacrament of baptism.

For Christ had prayed to the Father for this and said: “I pray not only for these but also for those

who through their teaching will come to believe in Me.” (Jn 17, 20)

60

THIRD SYMPOSIUM ON ECUMENISM AT FARFA

In March 2000, the Lord permitted us to gather in His birthplace, Bethlehem. 450 people came

from far and wide; yes, from more than 55 countries and from 12 different churches to an

international meeting of prayer for peace and unity. We gathered as one single family. With us we

had 75 clergy also from 12 different churches that came, but also other clergy from the Holy Land,

who, hearing of this prayer meeting joined us as well. This ecumenical event was co-ordinated by

some Jews and Palestinians who were touched by the inspired writings of “True Life in God”.

They believed in the redemption of Christ and of His saving plan in our days and volunteered to

organize this meeting.

When one knows how in our days, Palestinians and Jews are fighting against each other, their

reconciliation is a sign of the power of the Holy Spirit who joined those two nations to work for a

meeting for peace between the divided Christians. As Scriptures say: “Peacemakers, when they

work for peace, sow the seeds which will bear fruit in holiness” (Jm 3, 18). This is a lesson for all

of us.

To watch all these clergy wearing different vestments, yet all Christians, one beside the other,

smiling, sharing, and making no difference at all between them, participating in prayers and

Liturgies, was obviously a triumph for our Lord. We lived and had a foretaste of what unity will be

like one day between Christians and we give glory to God. Before the speeches and the

introductions, we had all the clergy lined up to perform a procession. It was awesome. Some were

holding icons, others statues of the Sacred Heart and a statue of the Virgin Mary; actually the

Madonna was held by a Lutheran pastor and he was very proud of it. Others had incense, others

had candles, Greek Orthodox clergy wearing round their necks rosaries that have been exchanged

with their crosses and Panayias with the Roman Catholic clergies’ rosaries and they all marched

with a Byzantine hymn chanting the Kyrie eleisson.

We had speeches given to us from clergy of different churches on unity. Their speech resounded

like they came from one voice and one mind. We sensed the great desire of all of us being one,

during their talks. Even there was a touching moment when several clergy from different churches

were on the podium and one Roman Catholic priest fell on his knees and went around kissing the

feet of all the other clergy, asking to be forgiven. With this spontaneous act of humility, a Coptic

priest touched to tears, did the same thing and crawled down to kiss the feet of his brothers in

Christ. We saw and we watched the thirst of the laity and the clergy, they have for unity. But we

sensed at the same time the great wounds our division has produced on the Mystical Body of Christ

and this is the reason we felt so joyful and consoled to experience these sincere acts of humility and

reconciliation. Had it been an official meeting and had we been officials of the Church and had we

the power and authority, we would have performed unity right there and then declaring it to the

world.

The majority of us are tired of this division, because it is not according to our law of love. Christ is

even more tired of seeing us divided. The cheers and acclamations of joy of all these nations who

were bonded together, appealing for a complete unity among Christians exposed that this division

is not only a sin but a crime as well. Yet, I tell you that the biggest crime of all is to have the dates

of Easter separated. How good it will be when we all cry out together: “Christos Anesti” in one

voice all in one day. We all say, “Thy Will be done on earth as it is in heaven…” Well then, what

is holding the officials of the Church back to do the Will of God and declare their reconciliation if

already the laity and priests around the world are living a unity? Unity began yesterday… we saw

it… we lived it…we rejoiced in it, and we want it as much as the Holy Spirit wants it. Jesus Christ

united us together by His Blood, so how can one deny this unity? “He is the peace between us, and

THIRD SYMPOSIUM ON ECUMENISM AT FARFA

has made the Gentile and the Jew into one and broken down the barrier which used to keep them

apart, actual destroying in His own person the hostility caused by the rules and decrees of the

Law” (Ep 2, 14-15). How can we say “no” to God, if He wants us to unite? Could it be because our

hearts have hardened? Have we forgotten the Holy Father’s words when He said: “The elements

that unite us are far greater than those that divide us”? So we should take up those elements and

use them to smoothen up the way to a complete unity.

The graces we received in those days in the Holy Land were innumerable. A Greek Orthodox

Archimandrite from the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, having heard we were there, called all 450

people and invited all of us to the Holy Sepulchre Church and another day to Mount Tabor to be

present in the Liturgies and even to partake the pre-sanctified gifts if we wished and believed in the

Holy Presence of Jesus in this Holy Communion.

There were so many moments of joy to see Orthodox, Lutherans, Catholics, Anglicans, Baptists

etc. praying together the rosary, all near each other and not withdrawn because this prayer

supposedly is prayed only by the Roman Catholics. On the contrary, we made no differences. The

prayer of the Rosary linked us together, and the exposed Blessed Sacrament for adoration, even

more, for in front of our Lord we kneeled and felt in this oneness that we were indeed the sons and

the daughters of the Most High because everyone was moved by the Spirit (Rm 8, 14), and like

children belonging to one family, together, side-by-side we were one and not one against the other,

for the spirit of differentiation was not among us anymore. In these moments we realized that we

were living by grace and not by law (Rm 6, 14). Our hearts were bound together and in Christ’s

presence we felt truly united in the spirit and in God’s love. Indeed, in these moments we had one

mind and one heart all united in Christ’s Heart. Later on, all the clergy said that when they will go

back home, they will continue to promote this spiritual unity and will testify to their brothers what

they lived and what they had seen so that they too rejoice in one Lord.

From what we gathered during our pilgrimage of unity in the Holy Land, we sensed that prayers

were more powerful than our speeches and dialogues because hardly did we open our mouths to

pray together, and our prayers were already heard and were answered. Just as the Holy Father back

in October 1986 invited to Assisi representatives of the great world religions to pray for peace, one

beside the other, we should follow that line and promote many more of these encounters of interreligious

dialogue in the future.

And now finally after this introduction I will go into my first theme, which is on metanoia 2 .

God’s Calling to a deep metanoia, fruit of humility that leads

us to reconciliation and unity

We, the people of the churches, must realize that we are living in a constant sin, the sin of our

division. “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against

itself will stand” (Mt.12, 25). Even if this division did not come directly from us but from our

forefathers, still, we are keeping it alive so long as we remain divided. We cannot say that God is

pleased when the shepherds are still separated. We cannot deign to talk about unity without going

through a metanoia and put into practice the two greatest commandments of God. It will be as

though we want to construct a house without laying down first its foundations. The foundations of

unity should be humility and divine love and the conversion of our hearts. For how could we

2. Metanoia: Greek word meaning ‘conversion’.

61

62

THIRD SYMPOSIUM ON ECUMENISM AT FARFA

believe that we could reach unity if we do not repent and live fully the two greatest commandments

that are based on the law of love? The seeds of unity would be constantly sown in an arid and

infertile land and no seedlings will sprout in that sort of aridity, which represents the hardness of

our heart. We have to sit down and ask ourselves: “are we maybe looking upon unity according to

our own mind, and this is why perhaps we are still separated, or are we seeking it as the Spirit of

God wants it, but we do not agree to it?”

This is why, with the fear of the Lord in mind knowing that God knows what we really are, a true

metanoia is the first and major step that is required so as to provide us the necessary light to lead us

all into a spiritual unity. This metanoia that is necessary is a colossal power in itself that will

transfigure us and will be fruitful. So let us be rich in poverty, just like the priest who fell on his

knees, weeping and kissing the feet of his brothers belonging to the other churches asking for

forgiveness, in this same manner let us repent in humility.

We have to knock down the old bricks inside our hearts, bricks of intolerance, pride, lack of

forgiveness, unfaithfulness, disunion, lack of love, and reconstruct Christ’s Church inside our

hearts by acknowledging each other in our hearts, allowing God to be more in us to bring us His

peace. There has to be a kenosis 3 given to God from a deeper metanoia, so that God will fill us

lavishly with Himself, then we will be “acceptable as an offering, and made holy by the Holy

Spirit” (Rm 15, 16). As we know, God is ceaselessly giving Himself to us to maintain our soul

alive, but after our metanoia God will manifest Himself to us in power and grace while He will be

expressing His heart’s desires, showing us how to use the key to unity. A metanoia will not only

lead us into a conversion of the heart but a total transfiguration will take place, because metanoia is

the gate that leads souls from darkness into light. Therefore, to this day we cannot say we are

walking in the light since we are still divided and fragmented; if we have not entered the light, how

are we to see God’s divine Will to progress into unity and to know in which way He desires it?

How are we to feel our way and where we are walking if we are still in the dark? If we do not

hurry, that little flickering flame that remains in us will become extinguished. We need to hurry

and put aside all our prejudices and draw oil instead from the reserves of humility and love to

enliven this flickering flame into a living torch.

But then each church should be willing to die to its ego and to its rigidity and then through this act

of humility, Christ’s presence will be shining in them. Each church has to go through an unceasing

repentance and cleave itself on Christ joining in His love of mankind. With this act of humility, the

churches’ past and present failures will be washed away and unity will be accomplished. Once we

lower our voice we will begin to hear Christ’s voice. Only when we lower our heads will we allow

Christ’s head to be seen and not ours, only when we lower ourselves entirely, will Christ be able to

lift us to see His glory. It is written: “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you

up” (Jm 4, 10). Then, and only then, we will be able to know God’s divine Will, for he will

demonstrate His power after having brought us to naught, and His holy presence will flow through

the desert of our soul like a river, healing us. Then, when our health is restored, our soul will

prohibit us from falling back and absorbing the venom we were absorbing in our pathetic division.

We will only have one desire and that is to thirst for the pure vivifying liquid that gives life.

Moreover, this pure limpid liquid, not only will it heal us but we will also overflow in mercy and

love. Having thus given the Holy Spirit a free passage in us, He will easily invade us lavishing us

with His light as well, giving us a total metamorphosis, transfiguring us into a heaven.

The Lord permitted me once to hear Him say these words: “If you allow My Holy Spirit to invade

3. Kenosis: Greek word meaning to empty ourselves.

THIRD SYMPOSIUM ON ECUMENISM AT FARFA

you, He can transfigure your soul from a desert into a garden where I can have My rest in you. The

Holy Spirit can transfigure your soul into a palace, where I can be king and reign over you. The

Holy Spirit can transfigure your soul into a heaven where in this heaven you will glorify Me.” To

reach unity we must go through a transfiguration and so long as we have not achieved sharing one

Cup around one altar it proves that this transfiguration has not yet taken place within us since we

are still living fragmented. So let us go through a metanoia to allow this transfiguration to take

place by the Holy Spirit. Without this transfiguration we will be incapable of penetrating into the

depths of God to see God and understand Him. This vision of the Godhead will undoubtedly draw

our hearts into one. In the experience of the vision of God, our soul as well will realize how much

we were offending Him in our division. This will be like an act of purification or a minor judgment

but the beginning of our new life in the one Christ.

In this transfiguration we will discover that although we would still be among men, our mind will

be in heaven; and although our bodies will be moving among men, our soul and mind, captured in

the divine Will, filled with the nobility of God’s light, will be as an angel’s walking in the courts of

heaven among the saints and angels, becoming one spirit with the Divine. Then the “Our Father’s”

prayer would be accomplished because His Kingdom would have come and His Will would be

done on earth as it is in heaven. From thereon all our undertakings would be perfect and done

without any flaw, since they would be divine and according to God’s mind. We have learnt that our

mind can never ascend to heaven on its own, but it is God alone who can lift it to heaven unveiling

with great delight His mysteries. Had we responded to Christ’s supplication that “we may be one”,

or had we responded to His call by showing obedience to His call, today we would be sharing His

Cup around one altar and we would be saying: “I am walking with God and ruling with Him now”.

The Church needs to be consolidated and unity is the only hope of consolidating the Church. As it

is now, the Church is losing its brightness in its weakness to the point that it cannot even stand up

and draw by itself the oil and the healing ointment from the Source of Life that is the Holy Spirit.

In its fear of losing its treasures but mainly its identity, and I would say, especially our Orthodox

Church, it not only barricades its windows, but makes sure that its doors are carefully locked as

well, not realizing that its interior has collected mould. Out of its fear, it prohibits grace to flow in

it that can lead it fearlessly into unity and reconciliation. Someone who acts out of fear and makes

sure that windows and doors are carefully barred is usually afraid of being burgled of their

valuables. But it is not only the Orthodox Church; the other churches as well behave in this way

too. Why are they fearing and isolating themselves? Why do some barricade their doors still? Has

Christ not reconciled Gentile and Jew and put them to worship together one Christ? Has Christ not

ripped open the veil in two, which separated God and man, reconciling the creature and the

Creator? Has Christ not destroyed the gates of hell and set the spirits free? So what could Christ

have done more that He has not done? Why then to this day do the churches still barricade

themselves and erect walls to keep alive this division? If only they would lay aside their fears, their

rigidity and their suspicions, today we would not be talking about unity because we would already

be celebrating the Holy Eucharist around one altar.

If the churches are able to go beyond the negative obstacles that separate them, obstacles that

according to Scriptures are against the fulfilment of the unity of faith, love and worship among us,

Christ will be faithful to His promise of releasing a time of peace in the entire world. This peace

will draw every being into the Mystical Body of Christ, fulfilling His words given to us in His

prayer to the Father, when He said: “may they be one in Us, as You are in Me and I am in You, so

that the world may believe it was You who sent Me” (Jn 17, 21). This supplication of Christ to the

Father for us to be so unified clearly intonated that the entire creation will be affected into a

spiritual unity and not a unity by a signed treaty. But such a spiritual unity that the whole creation

63

64

THIRD SYMPOSIUM ON ECUMENISM AT FARFA

gets affected cannot be made without the Spirit of God endowing His power to mankind. The Holy

Spirit then must raise new apostles to go and evangelize the world and draw the whole world’s

faith in Christ. Considering our remaining division, I would say that the Church has shown its

weakness in this respect.

Still, in spite of our wretchedness, the Holy Spirit of grace will not stop there because of our human

failures, ambitions and our incapacity to reduce ourselves and reconcile to attain unity. Christ’s

love of mankind compels Him in our days to bend from the heights all the way to us with His

precious Blood to conceal these imperfections. The Holy Spirit knows of our weaknesses and

failures, so one cannot say that the Holy Spirit stopped pouring out His graces; he is out there,

making a lot of noise so that in the end even the deaf who barricaded themselves will hear Him and

finally open the doors of their hearts; and those that were dead will come to life. From having

ceased to be they will once more be.

One of the graces that the Holy Spirit is giving us in our times are new apostles who are prepared

by God to pour out of their lips the words of God echoing them. But if our minds and hearts cannot

be touched easily and hear them it is perhaps that we have become too technical and unfortunately

too rationalistic. In this technical environment Christ’s mercy is blemished as well as the simplicity

of a spiritual life in God. This is why it is important that the Orthodox Church especially, but as

well as the other churches, allow the Holy Spirit free to blow within them a resurrection breath. In

this resurrection they will stand up and realize that evangelizing is a necessity to reconcile the

world that is so estranged from God. Evangelizing a dechristianized society is also a means of

allowing people of every race and creed to return to God and start seeking God’s face. Every

creature on earth could benefit and having thus surrendered to God the Holy Spirit will do the rest

and extirpate all obstacles that hinder the way to a complete spiritual unity.

God is asking from us a change from within. There would be some who would say: “But we always

kept the law of the Church and obeyed it…” It is not enough to keep the law of the Church and

obey it. Our rigidity is condemning us. A lot of times we talk of the law but we do not carry it in

our heart. The heart of the law is love; but so many times we live the letter of the law but neglect to

live the heart of the law. We are often neglecting the weightier matters of the law, which are love,

mercy and good faith.

We should be willing to pray more together because prayers are heard and answered whereas

dialogues are just spoken words and formulas. That does not mean that we should eliminate our

conferences and discussions, as I mentioned before, not at all. But what is more important for us,

the letter, or the Spirit? If we say, the letter, than we will work like administrators when dealing

with God’s affairs and we will not be justified nor will we ever achieve anything, because it will be

like saying to the Spirit, “I am not a child any longer and I can walk by myself”. The letter thus will

kill the Spirit and we will become truly administrators shifting papers only and leaving every

meeting empty-hearted.

So what is more important, the law or the Spirit? If we say the law then already we will be judging

our brother sitting near us belonging to the other church, while he will be already judging us and

we will hear from each one of us: “We are in the full truth and we are the ones who are right”. And

again we will be fragmenting Christ and again we will achieve nothing. If we start with the

doctrine and its contents, there again we will end up perhaps even more separated and fragmented,

never reaching the essential. I do not mean by that, that we should violate the doctrine since the

doctrine is the very existence of the Church. But, if we allow the Holy Spirit to lead us, instead of

us leading the Holy Spirit for once, then the Spirit will enliven the letter and the law and he will

THIRD SYMPOSIUM ON ECUMENISM AT FARFA

show us the true doctrine, that Jesus Christ is the only active principle in us despite our differences

in doctrinal terminology. For this act of charity, we need intense poverty of the spirit and an

overflow of generosity. So let our doctrinal dialogues begin with the Holy Spirit. Let Him be the

one who leads us by our sleeve to show us in our heart that the essence of doctrine should be based

on love, sacrifice, redemption and a total dispassion.

Our sin of division

If we have become divided and torn asunder, it is because of our intolerance with each other and

our spirit of pride. We have chased the distinctive sign of faith, which is divine love, as Christ said

about the virtue of love, “By this shall all men know that you are My disciples, if you have love one

to another” (Jn 13, 35). Yet, Christ’s love compels him to deploy limitless mercy on our division,

this division that brought upon us this aridity and hardness of heart devastating the Church and

bringing a general apostasy in the Christian world. The world now, apostatised as it is, has no place

for God, since it is occupied with a sort of self-realization. The world today refuses to give glory to

God and we are living in a time when every good is transformed into evil. The Christians are

ceaselessly being dechristianized because of our division, either that, or they are constantly falling

into error. Look around you and see: one section of the Church has been blinded because of their

rationalistic mind. So long as they make recourse to their own spirit they will continue to walk in

the dark. They will continue to proclaim their laws instead of God’s law. They will try to change

the Tradition of the Church to human frills and analogies, without the Truth that is in Christ. We

should pray for those Christians who easily undermine Christ’s Divinity, by plundering the Church

not only from its icons, statues and valuables, but also from the real Presence of Christ in the

Eucharist. If they proclaim Christ as King and glorious affirming His might, proclaiming His

fearful power, singing praises to Him, acknowledging His Omnipotence and His mighty wonders,

we should ask them why does Christ become to them a stumbling stone when it comes to measure

the magnificence of His Divinity in His Presence in the Eucharist? Unless they see His Divinity

with spiritual eyes, they will continue to be like a drowsing man who never grasps anything you

tell him.

The Lord allowed me to hear from Him these words: “I am the Supreme High Priest over all My

house, this house that men pitilessly divided in their lack of love; so, am I to keep seeing My house

being divided and in such rebellion and not intervene? My Eucharist is given less and less

importance. May every race know that My flesh and blood comes from My Mother; My Body comes

from the most Holy Virgin, from pure blood…”

Pretence and lip service never deceived Christ, but whenever we adopted a mutual love that led to

peace and a mutual understanding, His Spirit rejoiced. How can we today expect His Spirit to

rejoice when every feast of Easter that passes by, the dates of Easter are not unified, and are still

not unified officially unless it happens by coincidence like this year? How can His Spirit rejoice

when the members of His Mystical Body are still scattered like the dry bones in Ezekiel’s vision?

We are audaciously rebelling against God and all the heavenly powers. We are fearlessly

transgressing His law of love in front of His Throne. Scriptures say: “Everyone who knows what is

the right thing to do and doesn’t do it commits a sin” (Jm 4, 17). Scriptures do not lie and cannot

be rejected.

Furthermore, how do we expect the Church to be credible in front of the rest of the world’s eyes

when it preaches peace, love, unity, brotherhood and reconciliation to countries that are massacring

their people, when we, at the same time, in our own centre, are massacring the Body of Christ by

65

66

THIRD SYMPOSIUM ON ECUMENISM AT FARFA

throwing ever so often venomous arrows on one another? We, the royal household of Christ, have

bartered our glory for shame. God is calling all of us, and inviting us to be one, so that the world

may believe (Jn 17, 21). So only when the Church will be healed by uniting and regain her strength,

would she be able to reconcile the world to God. At the same time, consolidated as she would be,

she will be able to overturn all the dark powers that darkened the world and the dominion of the

evil one who keeps us scattered.

The role of the Holy Spirit in leading us to a spiritual unity

It is the Holy Spirit of grace alone that can progress the Church rapidly into unity making us

overcome our fears of going forward. The Holy Spirit is there to burn to the roots all that keeps us

divided and delays us from uniting. The evil one of course is aware of this and keeps raising

upheavals there where they normally should not be, grievously obstructing the work of the Church

and delaying unity. This is why I think it is very important to submit to the Holy Spirit and pay

more attention on the charisms He gives to the Church. We should stop extinguishing the fire of the

Holy Spirit that can brighten up the interior of the Church. Therefore, it is important to let our self

be directed by grace and not by fear. Let the Holy Spirit be like a Parousia within the Church.

The Body of Christ, the Church, as we know, always increases through the Holy Spirit and will

keep on increasing until the last Day, because Christ is the rock, the builder of the Church as well

as the Shepherd of His people. Christ is the supreme High Priest over all His house, this house that

men pitilessly divided in their lack of love. The beauty and glory and the fruit it gave once in the

beginning of its existence, has now fallen down like rotten fruit. If this is wrong, where is that

Apostolic Church in its eagerness to witness to the Christ, to lay itself down on the altar of martyrs,

to humble itself in the arena of shame and pain rather than deny the Christ? Where is that

discipleship fervour of faith and burning with desire to global evangelization? Oh Christ, how

much more must Your Precious Body be pierced and lanced and fragmented before we realize that

we may have divided Your Body as tools of the “divider” himself. We have done it unwillingly and

unwittingly. Help us to find and preserve that remnant so sacred called Your Church. Help us to put

it together again. A Church unity determined to bring Your Second Coming as a revelation

globally.

Although we know that there is an ontological abyss between the Holy Spirit and us, it can be

removed by the Holy Spirit and he can reach us to show us that the real Christian is the one who is

inwardly a Christian, and the real spiritual unity is and will be in the heart. Unity will not be of the

letter but of the Spirit.

Indeed, regardless of how much we expect from the Church, regardless of how we see its failures

but triumphs as well, regardless of the Cross of unity we place on her shoulders, in the end, we

know out of experience that this Cross will be carried by the pure in heart. If we are to decide now

for unity, then we must open our hearts and receive those souls that are gifted by the Holy Spirit.

When we will finally trust the poor in spirit who are willing to carry the Cross of unity on their

shoulders, then we will have a completely open field in which we could begin to sow the seeds of a

true Christian unity that will convert the world and fragrance it. The churches should allow the

Holy Spirit who is the inner source of Christian unity, to renew and fragrance them first, then in

their turn they will fragrance nation after nation, bringing them all to be one in the Truth, thus

perfuming the Mystical Body of Christ. So the churches, especially our Orthodox Church, should

be careful not to extinguish the Spirit and persecute the variety of gifts he distributes for the well

being of the Church, but allow His flame to purify and enliven the interior of the Church to

progress it into a spiritual unity.

THIRD SYMPOSIUM ON ECUMENISM AT FARFA

The Holy Spirit calls out to his Bride for unity too and says:

“Pray, that I, the utter fullness of God, the utterance of your spirit, the light in your eyes, descend

in your midst to show the world how wrong it was, to show to the churches their iniquity of their

division and how, although they declare daily that there is one Lord, one faith, one baptism and

one God who is Father of all, over all, through all and within all, are uncharitable with one

another. We 4 cannot say: “You have done everything to preserve the unity I offered you in the

beginning when you were still a child and in my arms”. Today you say: “I am not a child any

longer and I can walk by myself”. And since then you stepped out of my embrace and accustomed

your steps to walk your own way… O child of the Father! Fruit of the Son! My City and My Bride!

Your fragrance left you… are there going to be any survivors left in you when I will descend in full

force?” (9.11.94 True Life in God)

I think it is also about time that we stop creating new Gethsemanes for our Lord. Instead, let us

place garlands of love on our Lord’s Head. I will conclude by saying that unity will come only

when all of us will truly begin to love Jesus Christ.

4. The Holy Trinity.

ADDRESS - LETTERS

FROM CLERGY

ADDRESS - LETTERS FROM CLERGY

Letter from Bishop Anil Couto following the 2007 Pilgrimage, which visited the

Seven Churches of Revelation in Turkey and the Sacred Grotto of Revelation on

Patmos in Greece:

Bishop Anil Couto, Bishop of Jalandhar, Punjab, India.

The TLIG Pilgrimage to Turkey and Greece was a great spiritual and

ecumenical experience as two years ago. His Grace Archbishop Vincent

and myself enjoyed every moment of it. Thank you for the invitation, for

the perfect arrangements as well as for the first class treatment accorded

to the Bishops! There are no words to thank you adequately for this

great privilege. Please convey our heartfelt thanks to Vassula and the

entire organizing committee. Let us pray for the spiritual renewal of the

world and the unity of the Church. It will happen only when the world

TRULY accepts the salvific message of Christ. Let us pray for that very

especially. May TLIG be God's chosen instrument to call the Church and

the world to repentance and new life.

With love, prayers and every good wish in the Lord,

+Anil Couto

Archbishop Vincent Concessao concluded Vassula's meeting, at St. Columba's School

Grounds in New Delhi (15.1. 2006), with the following address to all present:

Archbishop Vincent Concessao, Archbishop of New Delhi, India.

All that we have heard is what is written in the Bible but this is in a very

personal way and shows that the Lord continues to speak. He is wonderful

in His ways He is a God of surprises and we do not know whom He will

use to communicate His messages. There was a time when Vassula did

not practice; the Church meant nothing to her. This is a tremendous

source of hope for all of us. The Lord is concerned about us and

accompanies us on our pilgrimage here on earth. She emphasized the

place of love in our lives and the Lord’s desire that we are all united

and to be disunited is in itself a state of sin. In a few days we will be

celebrating Christian Unity octave. The theme is: Where two or three are

gathered in my name, I am among them. The gathering is taking

place. There was a time when we were enemies to one another. There is a

long way to go because Jesus prayed: "May they be one", that is the Unity

that the Father wants among us and, as Vassula said, This unity of peace does not

imply more expenditure, she managed to come with one ticket!!! This is the kind of unity the Lord

wants and I request all of you to pray for Christian Unity. We do not know the way the Lord wants

us to unite but the goal is clear He wants one Church, one Shepherd.

Vassula thank you. God bless you and your ministry.

ADDRESS - LETTERS FROM CLERGY

True Life in God

Article published in The Voice of Delhi, a magazine of the Catholic Church in India, on July 2005,

right after the True Life in God pilgrimage.

Vassula Rydens quest for Ecumenism

Bishop Anil Couto

Vassula Ryden may not exactly have become a household name but she is a

spiritual celebrity enough for Christians across churches and denominations

to listen to her and want to seriously follow the True Life in God spiritual

path revealed by the Lord through her. She has visited Delhi at least thrice

since 1999 to talk to bishops and pastors, catholic Sunday congregations

and ecumenical gatherings about the True Life in God messages.

Since she claims to receive these revelations from God directly she is an

enigma both to the Greek Orthodox Church to which she belongs and to

the Roman Catholic Church towards which she strongly tends in her

divinely-inspired vocation to promote the unity of the One, Holy, Catholic

and Apostolic Church under the pastoral authority of the Chair of Peter i.e.

the Bishop of Rome or Pope of the Universal Church.

It was in November 1985 when Vassula was living in Bangladesh with her

husband (a Swedish international development expert) and two sons that she began to receive the

True Life in God messages from each person of the Holy Trinity and also from the Blessed Virgin

Mary. From 1955 Vassula has not been a church-goer; she did not know any catechism, leave alone

theology; she had hardly any acquaintance with the Bible. In fact she was a pleasure-loving

worldly woman who loved to play tennis, swim, model, socialize in clubs, paint and play host to

her husbands businessmen friends. It was in such strange circumstances that the call of God came

to her to leave her unspiritual path and be a prophet of True Life in God.

She received Gods revelations in an extraordinary way her hand being taken over to write these

messages. The handwriting in which these messages are written is big, vertical and clearly

distinguishable from her normal pattern of writing. According to the graphological interpretation of

her manuscripts her handwriting displays an extraordinary telluric force. The writer is filled with a

force that goes beyond her normal self with invisible power. She is an intermediary, like a centre of

transmission and amplification (cf. A Divine Bridal Call, p. 6). Graphologists would call such

handwriting hieratic . The messages dating from 1985 up until March 2003 and contained in 107

ordinary notebooks are now published in 12 volumes titled True Life In God. More will follow.

The messages are God s gifts of spiritual healing, love and mercy directed to all . Vassula, who has

been given this particular spiritual charism, is called to become an ardent witness of Christ,

carrying the Cross to the four corners of the secularized world. She is called to be an instrument of

divine providence and an echo of God s Word, compassion, reconciliation and peace together with

many other disciples to whom the Lord has also given similar vocation, although in a different

way. In spite of her spiritual sublimity, Vassula remains a very ordinary, humble, affectionate,

simple, down to earth Christian who is a housewife and a mother.

ADDRESS - LETTERS FROM CLERGY

As testified by many theologians the messages are not a new revelation but a reminder of the

Gospel of Christ. The basic vocation of Vassula is to share the Good news through proclamation in

communities and assemblies of prayer and meditation, to diffuse her writings by publication and

draw souls to Christ Our Lord and Saviour.

One of the strongest elements in these messages is the gravity of the divisions between churches

and the urgency of the work for unity of the Church and the importance of the Ecumenical

movement. The Lord is clear that the wounds in His Body are due to lack of fidelity, humility,

mutual love and on account of the rivalry and competition for earthly power, egoism and pride that

are rampant within the Church.

Vassula speaks of an interior vision of three iron bars symbolizing the three major Christian bodies,

Catholics, Orthodox and Protestants, calling their heads to meet. However, to meet they have to

bend. Nevertheless, The Lord has revealed to Vassula that the primacy of the Bishop of Rome is

indispensable to unity. This truth the World Council of Churches has realised and therefore the

Lord is asking us, through Vassula, to pray ardently for the WCC and its ecumenical efforts. The

ultimate vision of unity as revealed to her is of all Christians celebrating the one Eucharist at one

altar and praying to and worshipping the Lord before one Tabernacle.

However, it is to the Orthodox that she addresses herself primarily. With great courage and risking

rejection, opposition, criticism, suspicion and even persecution, she insists on orthodoxy that they

have to re-unite with the Church of Rome and acknowledge the Pope as the Vicar of Christ and

Successor of Peter unconditionally. Truly speaking, the East and the West have always maintained

intact the essentials of the One, Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church, albeit clothed in different

expressions of faith and worship.

At the same time the message to the Roman Catholic Church is to realise, in the light of God s

Spirit, that the Body of Christ needs its two lungs to breath freely i.e. the East and the West.

Furthermore, there is another pertinent message to the Church of the West: glory will shine from

the Eastern bank that is why I say to the House of the West: turn your eyes towards the East, do not

weep bitterly over the Apostasy and the destruction of your House; do not panic, for tomorrow you

will eat and drink together with My shoot from the Eastern bank My Spirit will bring you together.

Have you not heard that the East and the West will become one kingdom? Have you not heard that

I shall settle for one date? That one date refers to the date of Easter which differs in the Roman

Catholic Church and the Orthodox Churches.

Bishop Anil Couto is now Bishop of Jalandhar, Punjab, India.

ADDRESS - LETTERS FROM CLERGY

Advisor to the King of Jordan

addresses Vassula and TLIG Pilgrims

The Royal Hashemite Court: Mr. Akel Biltaji,

Advisor to his Majesty King Abdullah II

addresses Vassula and TLIG Pilgrims in Amman, Jordan, May 2005

I am advised to receive you Vassula and I hope you accept.

Your Eminence, Bishop Abu El-Assal, Bishops, Reverends, brothers and sisters:

My name is Akel Biltaji. I am here on behalf of his Majesty King Abdullah the II. We welcome you to Jordan!

This is where it all began... This is the cradle of faith; walking and following the steps of Abraham, Jacob,

Moses, Elijah, John the Baptist, Jesus and Mohammed. This is where Judaism, Christianity and Islam are

Love in one God.

This trip from what I understand from you, Vassula, is all about love, reconciliation, tolerance, and patience,

that is exactly what is needed here. This land where Moses asked us all to come, this land where the Heavens

opened and declared at the baptism of Jesus: "this is my beloved Son of whom I am very well pleased…

We welcome you and we want you to take back with you our message: the message of Islam; we want also

to reach out. Islam is love. May the most compassionate and merciful God hear us. Islam is mercy. To be a

Moslem we must recognize the others. I cannot be a Moslem if I'm not a Christian and if I'm not a Jew. So

this is how we, in this part of the world, believe.

In the spirit that is now in each and everyone of us, may the Lord see whether in a monastery, a mosque,

sanctuary, or a synagogue, see the spirit that you (Vassula) bring with you and that I can see on their faces,

the smiles, the love, from 38 countries . Politicians could not do this... Religion did that. That is why we

have to always hold on to our values...

I belong to a group, like Bishop Riah (Anglican Bishop.) We are the followers of Jesus of Nazareth. He is

our teacher. Mohammed is our teacher. Moses is our teacher. We need them all. That is why this week I will

be in Nazareth, my city…

Right from the Heart of Jordan in Amman, and on behalf of his Majesty, thank you for opening our hearts

and our minds and eyes. We have a full moon for you tonight so you can sleep at night. We wish you a happy

Pilgrimage and God bless you.

ADDRESS - LETTERS FROM CLERGY

True Life in God

International Inter-religious Pilgrimage

Egypt, October 2002

In the footsteps of the Holy Family

21 st - 30 th October 2002

At the beginning of the ‘True Life in God’ pilgrimage in Egypt all

the participants of the ecumenical and inter-religious group were

invited to a Divine Liturgy held at the Greek Orthodox

Monastery of St. George in Old Cairo. Copied here is the

address of Bishop of Babylon, His Lordship Theofylaktos,

given at the end of the Liturgy on 22 nd October 2002:

My beloved brothers, bishops, elders of all the Christian

denominations, I welcome you with special love in this holy

monastery. I bring you the greetings and blessings of His

All-Holiness, our Patriarch, Pope of Alexandria and all

Africa, His Holiness Peter VII, who couldn’t be with you all

because of other duties. He is wishing you a pleasant stay in

the country of the Nile, Egypt.

The place in which you are today is not only holy but also

‘Theovadistos’ (walked by God). Here the Holy Family came

and stayed for approximately 18 months, fleeing Herod’s

terror. Here Jesus Christ took His first steps, here the little

Emmanuel heard the first chirping of the birds. Our monastery is

one of the most ancient monuments that North Africa has to show,

built in the 4 th century AC. Here is where St. George the great martyr

was imprisoned for 30 months and from here his martyrdom started and

ended in a small town in Palestine.

I’m especially glad for all of us gathering here today and raised our hands in common prayer and

supplication towards God for peace for the whole world and for all the peoples on earth. Humanity

is suffering from wars and other kinds of catastrophes. We, as the representatives of all Christian

denominations and other religions, have the duty to teach our peoples to live in reconciliation with

all people. Unfortunately, we all have forgotten that we have common roots, common Father, God

and Creator of the Universe. Enough! The earth is tired of receiving, for centuries now, unjustly

shed brotherly blood! Man must understand someday that differences aren’t solved with weapons

but by the language of the heart and of love. Someday we all must work, and are obliged to do it

with all our power, towards this direction: to try and reconcile man first with God and then with his

fellowman, because in the Eyes of God we are all the same! St. Paul says there is no Jew nor

Greek, slave or free man, man or woman. All, in the Eyes of Christ, are one.

Our gathering today should have a cause, so that all of us make it our daily program in our life to

pray everyday so that peace prevails in the world. We should take the message of peace and love

and carry it to the peoples of all the earth. We can indeed be the new apostles that will speak of

love and peace. Everyday we hear by the media about catastrophes and violence among peoples.

ADDRESS - LETTERS FROM CLERGY

Wherever one might turn his eyes will see destruction, fires, human casualties and will hear

weeping and laments. Maybe it sounds illogical, but we, the Patriarchate of Alexandria, for 2000

years now, coexist in harmony, in friendship, with love, with all the people of Egypt that are

Muslims. We never had any problem. See every morning when the sun rises, it doesn’t differentiate

where it will send it’s rays, either to the Christians, the Muslims, the Hindus or the Buddhists

because we all live under the big sky, the love of God! If we put aside our personal interests, I’m

sure that some day we will all be happy. We will shake hands in reconciliation. I believe and hope

and pray that this day will come where the peoples of the world will meet at one point, will shake

hands, will lament for the blood that was shed and they will reconcile for ever in their life.

From the land of Egypt, which is ‘Theovadistos’ (walked by God) exactly because Our Lord Jesus

Christ walked on it, we are to send today to the ends of the world a brave message of love and

peace: as we gathered today in the Church under the same dome and we didn’t differentiate

Christians from non-Christians or of other religions. From today we will announce to the whole

world that men can live in reconciliation as long as they learn to love first their God, whoever He

is, whatever His Name is, and then I’m certain that love for their fellowman will spring also.

Pass on to the leaders of your Churches, to the leaders of your religions, to your people, to your

communities, to your towns, to your villages, to your cities, to your countries our greetings and our

blessings, our love. That we pray, a few Greeks, a few Christians, whatever the number, we pray

for peace, for the whole world so that next year that I hope to have you close by, the smiles be

wide! To reveal the message that there is no more war, no men are killed, there isn’t anymore

unjustly brotherly bloodshed on earth!

His Lordship Theofylaktos,

Bishop of Babylon
