BOXING HERO HAS HIS DAY
Calling all Thai boxing fans to join a weeklong annual festival of
Thai boxing and martial arts demonstrations from around the
world. The festival is part of National Muay Thai Day on March
17 in conjunction with Ayutthaya World Heritage events.
The town of Ayutthaya organised the festival to
commemorate Nai Khanom Tom, a local boxing legend around
the time of 1760, when Siam (Thailand) was defeated in a
war against Burma. According to local lore, Nai Khanom Tom
represented Siam in a match against a Burmese champion as
King Mangra of Burma wanted to see Muaythai. The boxer, also
a war prisoner, performed a traditional wai khru (dance ritual
that pays homage to the teacher) before the bout and when
the fight began, Nai Khanom Tom launched an unstoppable
barrage of punches, kicks and elbows to crush ten of his
Burmese opponents. The Burmese king was so impressed
with the boxer’s performance and rewarded him freedom.
