Artistic Identities
Bangkok’s Sombatpermpoon Gallery is showcasing a wide-ranging exhibition of works by prominent Thai
artist, professor and director, Kittikong Tilokwattanothai. “Color Identities” is a mixed media art show in
which Kittikong reflects on the many hats he wears in life, some of which he has chosen for himself, others of
which have been bestowed. In the exhibition, chosen mediums of colour and shapes express a wide-ranging
experience in playing the varied roles and responsibilities that constitute his life. The artist says that what
surprised him most in searching for himself was the realisation that the frequent usage of particular colours

Art on Water
Bangkok’s art scene is undoubtedly dynamic,
but one enterprise stands out amidst all the
bustling activity. Located on privately owned
ferries operating on the Thai capital’s iconic
Chao Phraya River, The Ferry Gallery is a
unique public contemporary art space. It
was founded a few years back by Thai artist
and entrepreneur, Kawita Vatanayankur, as
a means to promote contemporary art in
the city and bring it to the masses. Kawita
has ambitious plans and sees the project
as a first step towards democratising art in
Bangkok. Just given the sheer numbers of
daily commuters on the river, a large audience
is all but guaranteed and so provides
maximum exposure for the works exhibited.

One of the earliest peoples to reside in Southeast
Asia, the Mon are the second major ethnic
group in Myanmar who reside mainly along the
Irrawaddy River delta and the southern border
of Thailand. Suvannabhumi was the capital of
the Mon people and was famous for its talented
artists and skilled architects. The Suvannabhumi
Art Gallery in Thailand’s Chiang Mai is the
only gallery there which features exclusively
Myanmar art from a wide range of artists. The
gallery is an impressive showcase of distinct
paintings in original styles, content and themes.

Symbols of Nature
Hong Kong’s Hollywood Road is a well-known destination for antique
hunters, especially Chinese furniture. It is therefore no surprise that the
street is home to the Liang Yi Museum, a four-storey building which
houses one of the world’s largest and best-curated collections of
Chinese antique furniture. On show until March 31 is the exhibition
titled “The Secret Garden: Symbols
of Nature in Wood, Silver and Gold”
featuring over 200 objects from
the museum’s three permanent
collections and the largest showcase
of the museum’s objects to date.
