‘Wanwu: Metamorphosis’
(2013) by Chinese artist Bingyi
will be shown by Ink Studio. This
will be the international debut
of Bingyi’s large-scale landscape
ink paintings will be exhibited
and installed within the context
of an international art fair. The
immersive installation consists
of panels taken from the artist’s
monumental series ‘Wanwu’,
which was inspired by China’s
dramatic landscapes and weather.
Goodman Gallery curators Neil
Dundas and Damon Garstand says
that since its first edition, Art
Basel Hong Kong has grown in
stature and the complexity of its
international voice. “The reach
of the fair seems to grow year on
year and we now deal with clients
from across Australasia and the
Pacific coast of the Americas. We
certainly have adapted our offering
at Art Basel Hong Kong to appeal
to collectors from these regions.”
Away from the fair itself you’ll
find countless art spaces, in Soho
and also in PMQ, which used to be
a Police Headquarters converted
into a concept retail space. Other
places in Hong Kong other than
Central – include Wong Chuk Hang
on the south side of the island,
now popular due to the opening of
the metro’s South Island Line. Up
and coming is the West Kowloon
Cultural District and the M+ Gallery
of Chinese art. M+ is the new
museum for visual culture in Hong
Kong, as part of West Kowloon
Cultural District, focusing on 20th
and 21st century art, design and
architecture and moving image.
Meanwhile, check out Art
Futures, a section of young galleries
and the works of budding artists
from around the world. Then
there’s the Asia Contemporary
Art Show, the largest in Asia in
terms of the number of artworks
offered for sale. This year also has
Art Central by art fair veterans
Tim Etchells and Sandy Angus who
found the original Art Hong Kong
and later became Art Basel. The
exhibition is housed in a purposebuilt
tent right on the city’s new
Central Harbourfront, a 10 minute
walk from Art Basel.
The Hong Kong branch of Asia
Society moved into a Tod Williams
and Billie Stein-designed building,
a renovation of a former munitions
factory used by the British military.
Include Pedder Building on your
tour because it’s where some of
Hong Kong’s biggest galleries like
Gagosian, Hanart TZ, Lehmann
Maupin’s Rem Koolhaas–designed
space, and Pearl Lam, are located in
the 1924 neoclassical, a necessary
visit for anyone interested in the
city’s commercial art world today.
