Shanghai Art Scene
Tucks into the Industrial
and Arboreal
A Shanghai art aficionado formerly with Sotheby’s in
Hong Kong commented recently that Hong Kong is
an established place for collectors, Beijing is the place
for artists to thrive, and Shanghai is the showcase for
contemporary art. Proof of Shanghai’s dedication to
today’s art came on a blustery cold day last November,
as the city buzzed with the excitement of the
West Bund Art Fair. Two other major art shows, the
contemporary art fair ART021 and the 11th edition of the
Shanghai Biennale made the metropolis the place to be.
More than a dozen private art museums with
impressive architecture dot the landscape. Galleries in
re-purposed and carefully designed spaces proliferate
in tree-lined residential areas and art fairs of an
international scope plunges Shanghai further into the
art limelight. Government support, the art market
and metropolitan culture of Shanghai contributed into
making the city a continuing art destination. Here’s a
guide to places that reflect Shanghai’s art scene.
The Bund
When in Shanghai, the historic
Bund is a place to visit with
its impressive buildings along
the Huang Pu River where the
iconic skyline provides many
a snapshot. Near the touristy
riverfront boardwalk, you’ll find
galleries and museums. A few
miles south of the Bund lies the
West Bund, a rapidly developing
area of world-class arts and
culture hub.
The Long Museum
Contemporary art is featured in
the Long Museum, an area once
filled with car manufacturing
plants. Currently, it showcases
American artist James Turrell, with 13
impressive installations and artworks
special to Shanghai.
The Power Station of Art
Located within an abandoned power
station on the banks of the Huangpu
River, the Power Station of Art’s
unusual design reflects its artworks.
The oversized neon thermometer
sticking out the top of the building
has become a landmark. Shanghai’s
first state-run contemporary art
gallery also hosts the prestigious
Shanghai Biennale, bringing it to
international attention.
The Rockbund Art Museum
As the Rockbund Art Museum
continues to hold popular
exhibitions by esteemed Chinese and
international artists, it is believed
to be the first contemporary art
museum in China that ‘is fully
devoted to supporting contemporary
art production and creativity.’
The space was restored by British
architect David Chipperfield and has
presented works of China’s leading
contemporary artists, from Zeng
Fanzhi to Cai Guo-Qiang.
Yuz Museum
Once the hangar of Longhua
Airport, Yuz Museum in the West
Bund area has an exceptional size
of 9,000 square metres in the
Xuhui district whose goal is to
enhance the public’s appreciation
and understand the world of
contemporary art. With its size, the
Yuz Museum is often able to exhibit
larger than life pieces of art always
worth seeing up close.
Pearl Lam
Founded by Pearl Lam, Pearl Lam
Galleries is described as a driving force
within Asia’s contemporary art scene.
M50 District
This art complex is tucked away in
an old industrial area along Suzhou
Creek along abandoned warehouses.
Here, you’ll find ShangArt –
considered one of the most influential
art institutions in the country and was
among the first few Chinese galleries
to participate in major international
art fairs like Art Basel.
Other galleries in the compound
include J Gallery that promotes
young artists, while Vanguard
Gallery focuses on media and
conceptual art.
Former French Concession
Galleries are nestled among old
villas, cafés and bars with plane
trees that outline narrow streets of
the Former French Concession.
Leo Xu Project
The gallery represents a selection
of young Chinese and international
artists and shows case works
depicting experiences of displaced
Chinese citizens.
Bank Gallery
Bank Gallery’s Mathieu Borysevicz
says that their projects are ‘research
based and meant to provoke issues
of cultural history(s) and global
interests and attitudes, especially
as it pertains to China in the 21st
Century.’
Capsule
The gallery considers itself an
‘experimental space’ acting as
both gallery and art laboratory.
