Pearl River. Instead, onl<strong>in</strong>e post<strong>in</strong>gs show the latest<br />
gleam<strong>in</strong>g co-work<strong>in</strong>g spaces and cafés as people sip<br />

In the 18th century, the Q<strong>in</strong>g Dynasty imperial court<br />
gave approval for the Pearl River Delta area <strong>of</strong> Guangdong<br />
prov<strong>in</strong>ce (with Guangzhou as its base) to be the first <strong>in</strong> the<br />
region opened for trade with the outside world.<br />
S<strong>in</strong>ce then, activity never really ceased and twice a<br />
year s<strong>in</strong>ce 1957, the city hosts the largest import/export<br />
fair <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a called the Canton Fair.<br />
Nostalgic travellers to<br />
Guangzhou may still th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>of</strong> it<br />
as Canton despite its status as the<br />
third largest city <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a and the<br />
political, economic, technology,<br />
educational and cultural hub<br />
<strong>of</strong> southern Ch<strong>in</strong>a. It lies close<br />

Q<strong>in</strong>gp<strong>in</strong>g Market. The beauty <strong>of</strong> the<br />
mounta<strong>in</strong>s at Baiyunshan scenic<br />
area is another attraction while<br />
colonial history is still preserved<br />
on Shamian Island with its grand<br />
mansions set amidst greenery.<br />
Meanwhile, its modern <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
are scattered <strong>in</strong> a metropolis<br />
whose construction pops out new<br />
skyscrapers add<strong>in</strong>g to the city’s<br />
hyperactive skyl<strong>in</strong>e. Now cultural<br />
