For the Love of Trees
Starting with only 30 core members in 2010, now the
“Big Trees” group has over 130,000 like-minded people,
judging from the numbers on their social network. Borne
out of attempts to prevent developers from chopping
down some of the largest and aged trees, the group
has taken action toward more civic responsibility. The
founding members include young professionals, not just
tree-huggers. Weekends have been spent studying big
trees endangered by the boom in property development.

Passion Transforms Furniture
Inside the two-story setting of Atelier Mayasura in Soi Sukhumvit
31, objet d’arts from the 19th and 20th century along with Thai
contemporary art and design pieces greet customers from their
cosy surroundings. The retail space is the brainchild of Waan
Pithansombat Booth, formerly a museum merchandiser at the
Thai silk company Jim Thompson and a director for MAIIAM
Contemporary Art Museum.

A Build up to Drink,
Dine and Wine
Located at the corner of Charoen
Krung Soi 31, the newly-opened
FooJohn is a concept building based
on the idea of bringing a French bistro
and a true American smokehouse
under the same roof. Once an office
building owned by an actual FooJohn,
the old shophouse has undergone a
makeover and is now done in a retro
style. Think red and warm-coloured
walls, warm lighting, decorated
mirrors and vintage mosaic tiles.
FooJohn takes over the first floor
of the building, a French wine bar
and creperie with Brittany-styled
buckwheat crepes, salads and cheese
with an all-French wine list. On
the second floor, FoudeJoie offers a
cosy jazzy cocktail lounge, serving
a fine selection of French spirits.
The ambience takes visitors back to
the 1920s with jazz music, period
décor and a selection of cocktails
inspired by the famous early 20th
century cocktail manual, “The Savoy
Cocktail Book” and the Parisian
classic cocktail book from 1910 to
1940s era. Having high quality French
liquors or French-made spirits result
in a ‘real breath of fresh air,’ says
owner Romain Dupuy, who promises
cocktails that are more strong and
tasty with unique flavours never
tried before.
