Tips for Designing
YOUR DREAM KITCHEN
A kitchen is not just a kitchen. It is where everyone
comes together. Kitchens are where you and your
family connect, you talk over a good meal about your
days, you help your kids with their homework and
you share a couple of laughs with good friends over
a glass of wine. The kitchen is where memories are
made.
What makes a kitchen perfect? How can you make
sure you have a kitchen where you can help your kids
with their homework while you cook, have a glass of
wine with friends while not being cramped and have
dinner with the family without sitting on top of one
another? This all comes down to the design of your
kitchen.
Dreaming up your ideal kitchen
When it comes to designing your kitchen the first
thing you need to do is think about what you want
from your kitchen, what you currently have and what
you can afford. Once you have answered these three
things you will be able to know what sort of kitchen
you will need. When assessing your needs for your
kitchen, look at the following three aspects:
1. How do you really live?
If you are a lover of cooking and love to entertain,
don’t shoot yourself in the foot with small counter
tops, limited appliances, a single sink and no room
to sit. Rather look for plenty of open counter space
and all the necessary appliances. Finish it off with
the iTILE Athena or Amaltia double kitchen sinks and
casual seating space (bar stools) around your kitchen
island.
If you are the furthest thing from Jamie Oliver then go
for a simplistic kitchen. No need to waste your time
on all the expensive gadgets if they’re just going to
gather dust.
2. What is your current kitchen situation?
Do you already have a decent kitchen that merely
needs to be upgraded or is it at a bit of a disaster
area where you have nothing functional and have to
start from scratch? It is important to know exactly
what your current situation is and what your dream
kitchen is. The difference between the two is what
needs to be addressed.
3. What sort of dough do you have to spend?
Most importantly, you need to look at the difference
between what you currently have and your dream
kitchen and calculate how much money you have
available to spend. If your dream kitchen is going to
cost you more than you can afford, assess how badly
you want this kitchen or if the “dream” can be altered.
Don’t be afraid to put the kitchen remodeling on hold
and save up a bit more. You don’t want to spend a ton
of money on a kitchen that you don’t really want and
most importantly that doesn’t satisfy your needs.
10

Useful Tips for Insight on Kitchen Logistics
When you get to the nitty-gritty of designing your
kitchen you need to think about logistics. Think
function before you start to think interior design. What
is the point in having your dream kitchen if it is
difficult to move around, things just don’t fit and it is
not a safe place to be?
1. The Work Triangle
There is a path most travelled in the kitchen, known
as the ‘Work Triangle’. At each corner of the Work Triangle
you find the sink, stove and fridge. The idea is
to keep these paths open and clear, and to keep the
distances between these three as equal as possible.
This ensures that working and moving around in your
kitchen is as easy and efficient as possible.
2. Counter Space
Once you have your work triangle spaced out nicely,
think about counter space. Counter space is very
important and you can never have enough of it.
Having counter space near the open side of your
fridge will be the best thing since sliced bread when
you do a grocery shop. Drop the bags right next to
the fridge for quick and easy access. Counter space
is also essential on either side of the stove and your
sink. If you are a true lover of cooking you will know
the hassle of the countless pots and pans, plates and
dishes that go into cooking one excellent meal, if you
don’t have the counter space to store these, things
start to get incredibly cramped. When it comes to
choosing the material for your countertops, be sure
to choose something that is heat resistant. There is
nothing worse than needing to set down a hot pot
fast and having to open drawers to find a surface
protector before you can let it go.
3. Storage space
A good kitchen needs a lot of appliances for it to be
functional and suit your every need. Pots and pans,
spices, cutlery and crockery, cooking utensils,
appliances, the list is endless. It is therefore important
to make sure that you have the right amount of
storage for the items that you’ll need. The more you
enjoy being in the kitchen and the more time you
spend cooking will dictate how much storage space
you will need. Be wise when it comes to storage, use
every nook and cranny that you can find. Use the
walls if possible, hang things from the ceiling if
necessary, do what you have to do to make sure you
can store everything you need in your kitchen.
4. Appliances
Know where your gas pipes, water sources and
electrical lines are located before you place your
appliances. Make sure your dishwasher has easy
access to the water supply, the stove has access
to the gas pipes and that all appliances can easily
connect to electricity. One of the fatal errors when
designing your kitchen is placing appliances
without knowing where their power sources are. Just
be sure to check these before you make any
permanent installations.
5. Think safety
If you have kids running around the house make your
life easier by designing your kitchen so that you can
easily see both their inside and outside play areas.
That way you can keep an eye on them and you’re
able to run to the rescue if necessary. Consider
round-edge counter tops rather than square edge and
anti-slip flooring to accidents if there are any spillages.
Our Fusion wood-look tiles are available in both
natural and anti-slip with colours ranging to suit any
room design- perfect for a safe kitchen.
6. Don’t forget about your trash
Most people plan their kitchens and when it comes to
the final touches they remember their dustbin. A builtin
dustbin should be plan A in anyone’s kitchen. It is
clean, tidy and hidden. No one wants to have their bin
out in the open and smelling when they have guests
around. Definitely not ideal if you ask us. Also keep in
mind recycling. If you are a firm believer or would like
to start, the easiest way is to make the space for it. If
you have the space, it becomes easier to do.
7. The flooring
When it comes to the floor of your kitchen you need
to think of safety, cleanliness and durability. When you
look at the safety aspect the best option would be to
pick an anti-slip tile. If the floors are wet, for whatever
reason, you don’t want to slip, esspecially with
a hot pot in hand. Rather stay safe. Spills and mess
in a kitchen is inevitable, as much as you try limit the
mess to the countertops that is not always the case.
When you choose your tiles you choose something
that is less porous (porcelain), easy to clean and easy
to maintain. Hardwood flooring may look fabulous but
it doesn’t last as long around the fridge, stove and
sink areas. If you’re looking for that wood-look rather
go for wood look tiles just be sure that they are antislip
before you purchase them. The best advice when
it comes to floors in your kitchen would be to stay
away from white. You may think it looks great at first
but over time you will regret it.
8. Lighting
Something so simple can change the mood in a
second. The best lighting for a kitchen is a dimming
light. If you’re busy cooking up a storm and need a
lot of light, just turn up the light. If you’re having a
romantic evening with your partner cooking and
relaxing, pour yourself a glass of wine and dim the
lights to create a nice atmosphere.
One’s kitchen brings everyone together, make sure
it is a place where you and your loved ones want to
spend time.
KITCHEN DESIGN
Fatal Flaws
When designing a kitchen there are a few fatal errors
that can be made. Do not stress, we are here to help
you through your designing issues and guide you in
the right direction.
1. Cabinets that don’t go to the ceiling
Most people get overhead cabinets which is
undeniably the most logical place to have cabinets
in a kitchen, however, more often than not the
cabinets don’t go all the way to the ceiling. If your
cabinets stop before they reach the ceiling they
become a breeding ground for dust. It is not a place
that is easily cleaned and often neglected. A
gentle breeze in the kitchen and your food gets a
light sprinkle of dust. No thanks! To save the extra
labour of cleaning above your cabinets rather extend
them all the way to the ceiling. A huge up-side is the
extra storage space.
2. Don’t overdo it when it comes to design
Some things you can never overdo, counter space
and glasses of wine to name a few. But you can
definitely over design. Keep it simple. Think of an
elegant design and stick with it. If you’re looking for a
wood theme, stick with wood. It gets a bit excessive
if you mix wood, granite and glass with green, red
and blue for example. Not exactly a look you want to
go for. Pick your favourites and stick to those design
elements to keep the design clean.
3. Avoid a clutter of stainless steel
Having stainless steel in your kitchen gives it an
elegant look and feel, you just need to know where
to place it and where not to. Having bits and bobs
of stainless steel cooking utensils here, there and
everywhere starts to make things look cramped and a
bit too busy. Rather place them in one area and if the
amount is a bit overwhelming, hide it in a cupboard.
That’s what they are there for.
4. Don’t hide every corner with cupboards
When you are dealing with a lot of kitchen appliances
and not a lot of space, the general reaction is to add
more storage space, wrong. Closing up your walls
with cupboards creates a busy, stuffy feel. If you have
a lot of wall space, keep it. Rather extend your
cupboards up to the ceiling like we discussed above
and use your storage space wisely to make
everything fit. If you still don’t have enough space
consider what items you may not actually need in
your kitchen.
14

5. Buying cheap cupboards to save on budget
There are a few things that you should never skimp
on when it comes to your kitchen and one of those
things is the material your cupboards are made
from. You may think that you are saving, but a few
years down the line when you need to replace all the
cupboards you will regret that you didn’t spend a bit
more. We are firm believers in the good old saying,
“You buy cheap, you buy twice”. Hardwood with a
good finish and some heavy duty hinges is all you
need. They may cost a bit more initially but it will be
well worth it in the future.
6. Make sure you have plenty of counter space
One of the most important things that is often
forgotten when it comes to kitchen design is
counter space. You can never have enough of it.
When it comes to wall ovens, one of the biggest
mistakes you can make is to not have counter
space on either side. We promise you one thing, if
you forget about counter space, you will regret it.
7. White flooring
Although white flooring looks attractive and great, it
won’t last. Very often this advice is taken with a pinch
of salt and it is very much regretted. White flooring
gets dirty with great ease and is very easily stained.
8. Not having enough storage
When it comes to kitchens there are so many
elements that are needed to make the kitchen
functional and that need to be stored away. Built-in
cupboards are often quite expensive and therefore
often bypassed and not considered. One of the
biggest design mistakes is not having enough
storage. You need to consider what you have in your
kitchen and what you may want in the future. If you
have a small collection of cooking utensils and
kitchenware you’re in luck and don’t need a lot of
storage space. However, if you are an extravagant
chef you may have quite an over load of items. If that
is the case, sufficient storage space is essential. You
have two options, either cut down on your
kitchenware or spend an extra buck and have
everything neatly packed away.
9. Having the wrong kitchen island
Kitchen islands are an incredible asset to a kitchen.
They are a promise of more storage space, extra prep
space and even serving space. However, having the
wrong island in the wrong place can be an absolute
disaster in your kitchen. The “golden triangle” in the
kitchen (space between the stove, sink and
refrigerator) needs to be kept open. If anything blocks
this work space it will create nothing but hassles for
you. One solution would be to have one of the work
stations, either a stove or a sink, on the island itself.
Make sure that if you do have an island that there is
space for storage as well. The last thing you need is
a massive island taking up more space without being
able to use it for storage.
10. Ventilation is key
Walking into a kitchen that smells like last night’s
dinner is not something anyone wants to experience.
Regardless of how good the meal was. Good
ventilation is a necessity. If windows are limited or not
an option, invest in a ventilation system to keep the
air refreshed and rid of any unwanted smells.
Facebook what happened and how you fixed it.
iTILE DESIGN TIPS
the ins and outs of home design
Do you have a big bathroom but
it looks cramped and small? Try
using a combination of large format
tiles and a clear glass shower
door to open up your space and
make the room look and feel
cleaner and larger.
‘‘
Link your interior with your
exterior by flooding your tiles out
onto a patio to create a cohesive
look throughout your home. Be sure
to use the correct outdoor tiles to
make sure they last.
’’
16

Add elegant colour into your kitchen with a backsplash.
Carry the colour throughout the room to complete the look with
matching cushions or curtains.
‘‘
Using large format tiles in a small
area will visually expand the
space so that the room doesn’t
feel so cramped.
’’
Savour as much natural light in
your home as possible.
There is no better way to light up a
Get your home READY TO SELL
Here we are in the heat of summer and now is the
season to put your house on show to command the
best price while the garden blooms and spirits are
lifted. Well, that is the theory anyway. Frankly, a
garden can easily be given a facelift. But, when a
potential buyer walks into any property, first
impressions are everything. The second issue to
most buyers, that often comes to mind, is what
renovations or alterations will be needed to make
the home acceptable and at what cost?
A bedroom can easily be repainted and some planters
outside the entrance will help brighten the house up.
But, most potential buyers will head straight to the
kitchen and bathrooms, while inspecting the floors
to see if renovations are needed to make the home
liveable in their eyes. Kitchens, bathrooms and floors
sell houses! The inherent costs of replacing wall and
floor tiles, kitchen units, taps, fittings, baths, sinks,
lighting etc. are substantial, not to mention plumbing,
electrical and labour costs. So it’s easy to see why, as
a seller if these areas are already renovated, the buyer
is immediately seeing huge value in your property. A
R200, 000 renovation could easily equate to a R400,
000 increase in your final sale price i.e. money well
spent indeed.
Keep it natural, keep it neutral.
An important consideration will be whether the
potential buyer likes the style and can imagine their
furniture and belongings blending into the
environment. If, for example, you have laid classic
Spanish terracotta tiles throughout the home and the
buyer has modern contemporary furniture, the
potential style clash may jeopardise the deal. Walk
into any iTILE store or browse our website and you
will immediately notice a large portion of our tile
ranges include whites, off-whites and a large
selection of contemporary greys. Greys are trending
more so than the once favoured beige collection. Be
sure to browse our ‘Nest Collection’, ‘Subway
Collection’ and ‘Slabstone Collection’ of floor and
wall tiles. Grey certainly does not imply dullness in an
environment. Grey gives a neutral colour scheme and
can easily be dynamic by simply combining a darker
Dove Grey tile for example with a mosaic or décor tile.
By simply using white grout, the contrast is amazing
and tile size amplified. See our blog ‘Large Format
Tiles - How to Use Them Wisely’. For a visual
example of this effect, have a look at our lifestyle
photographs where professional interior designers
and stylists have mixed and matched tile sizes,
textures, laying techniques and you will notice a
complete lack of clutter. The old design adage, ‘less
is more’ completely applies here. When a
contemporary, brilliant, white luxury bath is added to
the equation, such as our ‘Amsterdam’ or ‘Bahama’
bath you will be well on your way to creating that
on-trend look.
Wood-look tiles are an excellent choice that will
bring warmth into the home, albeit, again there are
many neutral grey-white combination tones. Look at
our ‘Cedar-lite’ tile lifestyle photograph at www.itile/
wood-look-tiles and imagine your lounge floor with
the same tile extending outside onto your patio. Most
of the wood-look tiles are of course non-slip and
therefore ideal for outside and poolside areas. Ask
one of our iTILE brand ambassadors to explain how
to lay wood-looks and where budget is a concern.
Ask them to show you our exclusive range of HBC
‘Designer Collection’ and ‘Vogue Collection’ tiles!
Your consultant will also inform you on how these
tiles can be cut into different sizes and staggered to
create the most beautiful natural wood effects. The
HBC acronym stands for “Hard Body Ceramic”, which
as the name denotes, these tiles are ideal for heavy
traffic areas and will stand the test of time.
You will be amazed what a difference a neutral,
un-cluttered makeover will make as a seller. It will
speed up the selling process and get you a better
price no matter how the property market fares.
