It’s the story of how one company powered by purpose is

whose continuing efforts on behalf of sustainable choices 

have bettered lives, supported the planet and altered the

This is the story we wrote together in 2016: how all of us

My first (yes, there are many) and the reason I leapt at the opportunity to 

serve as your new CEO, was your belief in and passion for this company and 

this mission. Never, in all my decades of working with network marketing 

professionals, have I seen anything remotely like it. 

In Viridian International I see a level of connection, commitment and drive 

that blows me away every time. We truly are Powered by Purpose. And now, 

unencumbered by geographic limitations, we are poised to share that purpose 

with the world. There are no limits to what we can do, what we can achieve, who 

we can be. Here’s what that’s going to look like in 2017: 

We’re going to disrupt the travel industry to an even greater extent than Viridian 

disrupted retail energy back in 2009—and in so doing, achieve tremendous 

wins for the planet, our customers, our Associates and people around the world. 

I’m going to work to see that even more of our Associates experience the 

financial success they deserve, because as their businesses grow so does our

the scene in 2009 with a revolutionary, affordable green energy product, it 

single-handedly transformed the entire retail energy industry—and has steadily

In 2016, Viridian became Viridian International and is now a global company 

serving customers and building businesses in the United States and Australia. 

We entered the $8 trillion global travel industry with our new offering, Travel 

Light. And with that major shift in our business came a subtle but important shift 

in our tagline, from “Power with Purpose” to “Powered by Purpose.”

ONE MORE BIG REASON WHY 

The combustion of fossil fuels such as coal causes the amount of CO2 in the 

atmosphere to rise. Those CO2 emissions are one of the leading causes of the 

rising temperatures and extreme weather patterns known as climate change. 

The more CO2 we can prevent from being released, the better off we all will be. 

And we can do it! We must. Just take a look at the equivalencies above and on 

the next page to see what a difference your responsible choices can make.

2016 Generation V Award Winner 

The most significant award we give each year honors the Viridian Associate 

who embodies the spirit of Generation V, from the way they build their 

business and grow their team, to the way they inspire others, represent our 

brand and support a sustainable future. In 2016, our Generation V Award 

went to John LoPresto, known to everyone at Viridian as the big-hearted, 

irrepressible, multi-talented “Johnny Lo.” 

“For many years music was my life. It still is a huge part of it: I’ll always be a 

rocker. But my life changed permanently and for the better the day I met [Viridian 

founder] Mike Fallquist and saw the Viridian opportunity.”

Every seven years, the average U.S. family of four releases a 

MILLION POUNDS OF CO2 

into the Earth’s atmosphere. 2 

If you’ve ever wondered how much of an effect one simple, 

everyday choice can make (in addition to our Big Number on 

page 8, of course!), here’s another way to make that concrete: 

Imagine that you’re piloting a plane. One of 

your chief concerns will be navigation: Every 

degree on the flight chart counts. In fact, for 

every single degree you fly off course, you’ll 

miss your target landing spot by 92 feet for 

every mile you fly. 1 That works out to around 

one mile off target for every 60 flown. 

And the longer you travel off course, the 

farther you’ll wind up from your destination. 

Flying from JFK to LAX would put you almost 

50 miles off course. If you started at the 

Equator and flew around the Earth, deviating 

by just one degree would land you almost 

500 miles off target. 

Now imagine that the destination you’d been flying toward was 

the future. By relying on fossil fuels, we’ve gone significantly 

“off course” toward an unhealthy destination. But by a small, 

simple shift—easy, everyday changes adopted by increasing 

numbers of people—we can right our path and wind up at a 

far better tomorrow.

In just one year, Sun Plus One hit a real chord with solar customers and

expand the program, and renamed it Light the World. Through Light the 

World, Viridian International donates power to energy-poor households and 

communities here at home and around the world: For every month that you’re

STARFISH, RIGHT? 

Thousands of them are stranded on shorelines every year, 

where they quickly perish under the sun. One day, a man 

was slowly walking down a particularly starfish-strewn beach, 

carefully lifting the creatures off the sand and gently pitching 

them into the water, one by one. 

Any big problem can feel paralyzing it you focus on its scope. 

Take litter, for example: We’ll probably never eradicate it 

completely. But in the United States and Australia, Viridian 

volunteers carrying one garbage bag apiece have collectively 

gathered tons of trash from our shared outdoor spaces. One 

by one, through our Earth Month and local change events, 

we also plant trees, pull invasive plants and spread the word 

about living sustainably. 

The challenges our planet faces are even more daunting. The 

Amazon rainforest is shrinking each year. More than 1.2 billion 

people around the world still live without electricity. 1 But since 

2010, we’ve collectively traveled millions of miles on our 7 

Continents in 7 Years journeys: to reforest devastated swaths 

of land, install solar power in off-grid villages, provide easier 

access to clean drinking water and kindle hope. 

“You’re not going to make a difference, you know,” another 

beachgoer casually remarked. 

“I will to this one,” the man replied, as he tossed the 

next starfish back into the sea. 

Hope. There are millions of reasons 

why we do what we do, and hope is 

the foundation of them all. 

The same spirit shines through every one of Viridian’s local

EUROPE, JUNE 2016: 

TUFINE, ALBANIA 

BRINGING LIGHT AND RECREATION TO THE 

EUROPE FEW PEOPLE EVER SEE 

On our previous global journeys to Ghana, Indonesia, Fiji 

and Nicaragua, we’d focused on installing solar energy atop 

homes and community centers. People needed a light source 

for studying and meetings or a power source for refrigeration 

and charging phones. But different challenges demand 

different solutions: Tufine needed safe streets and a place for 

children and their families to enjoy the wholesome benefits of 

outdoor sports and exercise. 

In less than a week, with the enthusiastic help of the 

community and our project partner El Alcom, we were able 

to accomplish both of those goals despite the uncooperative 

weather. Specifically, we donated and installed: 

Europe is not the first continent we generally think of when 

it comes to energy poverty. But energy poverty is strongly 

correlated with economic poverty, so it’s not surprising that a 

sizable number of Albanians—almost a quarter of whom earn 

less than $2 a day—must make do with limited electricity. 1 

The Roma people living in Albania are among the poorest of 

the poor, both in income and access to vital services. And the 

small cluster of buildings and painted caravans that make up 

Tufine are where a good many Albanian Roma live. 

This being our sixth international journey to an energypoor 

region, our team of Viridian leaders were old hands 

at navigating the darkness. But nighttime has a distinctly 

different feel in an urban setting than in the remote rural 

locations we’d previously visited. Here in Tufine, where 

crime can flourish with no street lamps to deter it, the dark 

meant dangerous walkways and families trapped indoors 

after sunset. The truth was, even if there were a few lamps 

to chase away the shadows, there was no inviting recreation 

area for people to gather in, relax and play.

NORTH AMERICA, 2016: 

GALLUP, NEW MEXICO 

THE SEVENTH JOURNEY FOR 7C7Y 

BRINGS IT ALL BACK HOME 

In the Navajo Nation, just 30 minutes outside Gallup, New 

Mexico, huge stretches of desert separate small, tidy homes 

with well-swept dirt yards. Majestic mountains and mesas 

offer extraordinary views, but everyday life is spent pursuing 

basic necessities. And chief among those is access to clean 

water. Since the people we’ll be serving don’t have electricity 

or wells, their sole source of water comes by truck. They get 

a few pails to last the whole week, and use only four to seven 

gallons per day. That stands in sharp contrast to most other 

Americans, who each day typically use 100 gallons each. 1 

The desert-dwelling Navajo have always respected the 

value of water, and take pains never to waste it. But the 

daily hardship caused by having to plan for every drop is 

something we can—and should—do something about. 

Since 2010, as part of our 7 Continents in 7 Years initiative, 

Viridian voluntourists have journeyed thousands of miles to 

remote communities around the world. Together we’ve been 

to places none of us could have ever traveled to alone, and 

accomplished things none of us would have dreamed possible. 

So much has happened since our first journey to Brazil, but it all 

seems to have gone by in a flash. Who can believe that Year 7 

of our global initiative is coming up so soon? 

We all felt we needed to do something different to mark this 

milestone: a meaningful project that would bring us full circle. 

So instead of traveling outside our borders to parts unknown, 

we’ve decided to serve a community right here at home. But 

that doesn’t mean we won’t be venturing into new territory— 

no 7C7Y trip would be complete without a new challenge. 

(And it doesn’t mean that our global initiatives are over. Far 

from it! As we wrap up 7C7Y, we are about to unwrap a new 

series of journeys. Stay tuned!) 

In Smith Lake, working with project partner Dig Deep, we 

will install water tanks and piping, plus solar panels that will 

provide the electricity needed to pump, filter and heat the 

water. Think about it: Running water! Hot water! And all for 

the very first time. It’s almost impossible to imagine what a 

difference that will make. 

In less than a week’s worth of work for us, we’ll once again 

have the privilege of opening up a whole new world for some 

very deserving families.

VIRIDIAN ENERGY’S 2016 MARKETS 

In 2016, Viridian served 17 markets in the United States, including our two 

most recent markets in Texas and Rhode Island. Plus, Viridian Energy 

began supplying natural gas to our customers in California and opened 

solar markets in New Mexico, Rhode Island and Vermont.

households through its relationship with Click Energy. Through Click Energy’s 

Viridian Simply Right plans, 50% of these customers’ energy use will be 

counterbalanced by the purchase of carbon offsets that support environmentally 

proactive projects around the globe. 

Click Energy customers will be supporting carbon-offset 

projects around the world: Rising CO2 levels are a global 

challenge, after all. And the more we can do to lower those 

CO2 levels, the better it will be for the entire planet, including 

one of Australia’s greatest treasures, the Great Barrier Reef. 

Coral reefs, built by millions of coral polyps 1 , are often called 

the “rainforests of the sea” because of the diversity of life they 

shelter, including around 6 million tons of fish harvested for 

food a year. 2 

But the Great Barrier Reef is in grave danger. The truth is, all 

reefs are: 100% of reefs may be at risk of extinction by 2050 

due to warming temperatures caused by rising CO2 levels, 

according to the World Resources Institute.

The news about solar just keeps getting better. Already America’s hottest 

energy trend, solar electricity production in the United States now appears 

to be 50% higher than experts had previously estimated. (30.4 million MWh 

produced for the 12-month period ending in March 2015, as opposed to the 20.2 

million MWh estimate. 1 ) 

Needless to say, all that solar power is shaking up the energy supply. Thanks 

to lower-cost panels, tax incentives and a host of other factors, U.S. solar power 

capacity will have nearly tripled in less than three years by 2017. 2 In fact, solar 

is the single biggest driver of growth in the renewables sector. 3 

That’s pretty important news. But for Viridian customers who’ve received their 

installation, going solar is first and foremost a simple and easy way to marry 

savings and sustainability. And each one of those customers is making a 

significant, positive impact that will last for generations. 

SUN PLUS ONE 

INSTALLS SOLAR POWER 

IN GUATEMALA! 

In the fourth quarter of 2015, Sun Plus One began spreading 

light to low-income communities around the world: one solar 

system donated for each 15 installed solar customers. That 

year, a low-income single mom in Port Chester, New York, 

became the first Sun Plus One solar power recipient. 

But in 2016, the the sun really shone for P’al Guatemala — 

a tiny, off-grid village tucked away in the mountains. 

Thanks to Sun Plus One, one capable and motivated woman 

from P’al, Caterina Santiago Maton, was able to travel to India’s 

Barefoot College 4 for six months to acquire the knowledge 

and competence to become a solar engineer. With the help of 

three other Barefoot College-trained solar engineers, Caterina 

installed 100 home solar systems in her village, bringing light 

to families who had never had it before. They installed two 

USB charging hubs, too! And it was all made possible by solar 

customers who’d made one simple, easy, affordable choice.

The carbon offsets purchased for Viridian this reporting year for our customer usage plus our corporate travel and events came from

MOVING ALL OF US CLOSER TO 

A MORE SUSTAINABLE FUTURE 

For the first time in U.S. history, more electricity was expected to be produced in 2016 using natural gas than coal: 35% vs 30%. 1 

(Compare that with 27.6% from natural gas vs 39.3% for coal in 2013 2 , the year after Viridian Energy introduced its Simply Right natural 

gas product.) And that’s good news, because natural gas releases roughly half the carbon dioxide of coal when it’s burned for fuel. But 

that’s still more CO2 than can be reasonably called sustainable. Viridian Energy is taking thoughtful steps to minimize the impact of 

that CO2 by purchasing carbon offsets to counterbalance our Simply Right natural gas customers’ usage. 

The purchase of these carbon offsets isn’t required, but doing so mirrors the heart of Viridian’s mission. That’s also why we purchase 

carbon offsets for our corporate and Travel Light members’ travel. We do it as part of our commitment to putting more sustainable 

choices within everyone’s reach, and creating a more sustainable future for this planet we all share. 

What’s more, every Simply Right natural gas customer gets to make a difference for the environment and play a role in raising the bar 

for the natural gas industry. Through the Simply Right Natural Gas Fund, Viridian Energy makes donations on customers’ behalf to 

nonprofit organizations within the natural gas sector that are driving and creating positive change. 

MCKINNEY LANDFILL 

COLLIN COUNTRY, TEXAS / 32,455 OFFSETS 

Producing greenhouse gases are an unavoidable part 

of operating a landfill, but releasing them into the air is 

irresponsible. At McKinney, as covered garbage slowly breaks 

down, a series of wells drilled into the cover release the gas 

into a piping system. The gas is then funneled to a generator 

and burned to make electricity. Through this process of 

methane recapture, the 65-acre McKinney Landfill is able to 

supply responsible electricity to the grid and avoid releasing 

65,000 metric tons of CO2 each year.

Wolf Creek is a municipal solid waste landfill that accepts

its strong environmental record, with Department of Natural 

Resource inspection scores of 90 or higher since 2009, 

this facility provides environmental benefits equivalent to 

removing 22,700 passenger vehicles from area highways, 

while providing enough electricity to power 1,650 homes.

Since the launch of Simply Right in 2013, Viridian Energy has made voluntary contributions on its natural gas customers’ behalf 

to the Simply Right Natural Gas Fund. These contributions have helped support the work of carefully selected entities in the 

natural gas sector, furthering fund objectives to:

AEP Summerville 

1 REC, WV 

The 80-MW Summersville project in West Virginia–completed 

at a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dam–provides 200 gigawatthours 

of clean electricity each year, enhanced recreational 

opportunities on the river, and revenue for the city and the 

federal government. 

The Summersville Dam is the second highest dam east 

of the Mississippi River and has a long history. Although 

authorization for the dam was provided in the Flood Control 

Act of 1938, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers finally completed 

it in May 1966. Behind the 390-foot-high structure, a 2,790- 

acre reservoir stores water for flood control, recreation, and 

flow augmentation. 

Safe Harbor 

1,396 RECs, PA 

The global alternative asset management company known 

as Brookfield operates the world’s largest independently 

owned hydroelectric portfolio, which consists of over 200 

hydroelectric generation facilities located on 80 river systems 

across North and South America. In 2014, Brookfield acquired 

the 417 megawatt Safe Harbor hydroelectric generating 

facility in Pennsylvania. One of the largest conventional 

hydroelectric facilities in the U.S., Safe Harbor generates an 

average of 1.1 million megawatt-hours annually, enough to 

power about 100,000 homes. Of particular use are its storage 

capabilities, that can be tapped to supply energy during 

hours of peak demand. 

BIOMASS 

Wheelabrator North Andover 

2,602 RECs, MA 

In operation since 1985, Wheelabrator North Andover’s 

energy-from-waste facility generates 40 MW of clean, 

renewable energy for the local utility annually, enough 

to power 41,000 homes throughout the Merrimack Valley 

region as well as its own operations. The facility uses up to 

1,500 tons of local residential and business waste each day. 

In addition to the power it generates, that reclaimed waste 

also provides hot water and heating for Osgood Landing, 

a high-tech business complex of more than 50 companies 

and greenhouses. Last year, Wheelabrator North Andover 

processed 466,150 tons of waste in all, recovering 7,060 tons 

of metals. In doing so, the facility saved 530,000 barrels of oil 

from being used for power, and 159,000 tons of coal. 

Verso Quinnesec Mill 

78,630 RECs, MI 

Mindful that papermaking is a resource-intensive 

business, requiring trees, water, energy and chemicals, 

the sustainability-oriented Verso Paper Corp. has recently 

completed a $45 million energy system upgrade at its 

Quinnesec, Mich., pulp and paper mill that will provide 

95 percent of the mill’s electricity requirement. Using the 

principles of cogeneration, the new 28 MW biomass system 

enables the mill to expand its capabilities to process residual 

wood such as treetops, limbs and bark. As it had before the 

design upgrade, the mill’s boiler will burn black liquor, the 

waste product created by turning pulp wood into paper. 

The company estimates that the upgrades will reduce the 

mill’s annual energy costs by $7 million, and create a revenue 

stream through the sale of RECs.

GRID Alternatives 

Tri-State Facility 

1 SREC, NY 

GRID Alternatives Tri-State trains and leads teams of volunteers 

and job trainees to install solar electric systems for multifamily 

affordable housing developments in New York, New Jersey 

and Connecticut. These solar installations provide families with 

reasonably priced energy, give workers hands-on experience 

to help them find jobs in the green-tech economy and create a 

clean, local energy source that benefits everyone. 

Endicott College 

17 SRECs, MA 

Endicott College, in partnership with Sun Edison and Power 

Options, in 2014 opened a 245 kW solar parking lot canopy 

that covers a 255-car space. The panels will generate 

electricity for about 10% of the campus, and is one of the 

largest installations of its kind in the Northeast. The project, 

which makes a significant contribution to the Massachusetts 

goal of installing 250 MW of solar by 2017, will reduce regional 

carbon dioxide emissions by about 400 tons per year. There 

are economic benefits as well: The solar canopy will provide 

the college with power at a stable price for 20 years. 

In addition to purchasing a REC from its Tri-State facility, Viridian has worked with GRID 

Alternatives in Nicaragua, New York and, most recently, the Sun Plus One installation in 

California, pictured below.

Georgia Mountain 

Community Wind 

1,739 RECs, VT 

This four-turbine, 10-megawatt wind turbine project is owned 

by Vermont business owners and employers with a passion for 

locally generated renewable energy. By harnessing the power 

of the winds flowing across the Champlain Valley, the project 

creates affordable energy, meets the electricity needs of more 

than 4,200 average Vermont households and stimulates the 

regional economy by creating local jobs. GMCW is financed by 

Merchants Bank of Burlington, Vermont. 

All of the power generated by this project, as well as the RECs, 

go to the nearby Burlington Electric Department through a 

long-term stably priced Power Purchase Agreement. 

Rollins Wind Project 

1,453 RECS, ME 

The 60 MW Rollins wind project is located in Penobscot 

County, Maine, about eight miles east of Lincoln. Owned by 

First Wind, the project will produce 168 million kWh of clean, 

renewable energy annually, avoiding approximately 80,976 

tons of CO2 emissions each year and powering more than 

23,000 households across the towns of Lincoln, Burlington, 

Lee, Winn and Mattawamkeag. 

Construction of the $130 million project began in September 2010 

and was completed in July 2011. It will generate an estimated 

$24 million tax base for four nearby communities over a 30- 

year period. Clean power from the plant is being purchased by 

Central Maine Power (80%) and Bangor Hydro Electric (20%) as 

part of a 20-year contract signed in October 2009.

METHODOLOGY 

Transparency and accountability are central to Viridian’s 

mission. We have provided the following to support a greater 

understanding of both our responsible energy and corporate 

practices, as well as our procedures for calculating their 

impact in reporting years 2015 and 2016. 

ELECTRICITY: USA 

The green power purchasing we are reporting on this year 

includes both the amount of renewable energy Viridian 

Energy is required to buy to meet a state’s Renewable Portfolio 

Standard (RPS) as well as the incremental, voluntary green 

power Viridian Energy purchases to support our electricity 

customers’ usage and our goGREENER customers. See 2016 

REC reporting (pages 58-106) for complete information. 

The avoided emissions associated with the purchase of RECs 

can only be calculated once each REC’s unique serial number 

is logged and retired on an approved registry. The voluntary 

RECs retired for New York customers in 2015 were not tracked 

with serial numbers, because New York has historically used 

Conversion Transaction forms rather than serial numbers to 

track RECs. The forms themselves are filed with New York 

Department of Public Service. Throughout this report, where 

we make statements about the number of RECs purchased, 

that is how many RECs were retired within the defined period 

unless stated otherwise. 

NATURAL GAS: USA 

We are proud to report on the carbon offsets Viridian Energy 

purchased to balance our Simply Right natural gas customers’ 

usage and our goCLEANER customers. (See pages 54-55 for 

more information), in addition to those we’ve purchased for our 

corporate travel. 

SOLAR: USA 

Viridian serves solar customers in markets across the United 

States and helps fund solar power for low-income households 

around the world through our Sun Plus One initiative. You can 

find the installed megawatts of solar and learn more about Sun 

Plus One on page 52. 

TRANSPARENCY 

It’s important to us that everyone we meet understands the 

power of simple, everyday choices to make a significant 

difference for the world, and trusts us to honor our commitment 

to the environment. That’s why Viridian voluntarily publishes 

REC retirements; offsets purchased and retired; and carbon 

avoided in this report.

BIOMASS 

GREEN ENERGY 

NET METERING 

RPS 

refers to organic matter that is derived from living or recently 

living organisms. When it comes to energy, biomass refers 

to energy sourced from organic matter: wood and the wood 

waste from various industries, agricultural products and 

byproducts, and the biodegradable matter in landfills. Two 

common methods of generating energy from biomass are: 

1. Burning organic matter to produce electricity, or 2. Wasteto-energy, 

which collects gases from landfills and burns them. 

CARBON OFFSETS 

compensate for greenhouse gas emissions. Each carbon offset 

certificate has a unique serial number that stands as proof that 

one metric ton of CO2 or its equivalent in greenhouse gases 

has been reduced, avoided or sequestered. 

For a carbon offset to be credible in the international market, 

the emissions avoided must be permanent, additional, verified, 

enforceable and real. Viridian Energy only purchases carbon 

offsets from well-credentialed suppliers, so we’re confident our 

company and customers are having a positive, quantifiable 

impact on the planet. 

Carbon offsets are created through energy efficiency systems, 

methane capture, wind farms, waste-to-energy systems and 

reforestation and conservation projects. Carbon offsets may 

also be used to encourage behavior change in undeveloped 

regions, such as through funding clean cook stoves. 

DEREGULATION 

opens a marketplace that was previously operated as a 

monopoly. But “deregulation” doesn’t mean “no rules.” Energy 

providers such as Viridian Energy are carefully monitored and 

are subject to strict laws and oversight.

energy is clean energy, but the two are not synonymous. 

Because all electrons in the grid are identical regardless of 

source, consumers can only say they’re using green energy 

if they or their energy supplier purchased Renewable Energy 

Certificates to support their usage. 

GREENHOUSE GASES 

absorb the sun’s reflected energy and redirect it back to Earth 

as heat. This heat warms the land and our oceans, creating 

global climate change. The most notable of these gases are 

carbon dioxide, methane, water vapor and nitrous oxide. 

Although some greenhouse gases are emitted naturally— 

from the decay of plant matter, for example—the largest 

source of greenhouse gas emissions is human activity, such 

as transportation or energy use. 

Because methane is the greenhouse gas most associated with 

the production and combustion of natural gas, Viridian Energy 

mitigates our Simply Right natural gas customers’ usage with 

carbon offsets that specifically target methane production. 

HYDROPOWER 

is he force of moving water powered the water wheels of 

the ancient Greeks, fueled the mills of America’s Industrial 

Revolution, and accounts for 20% of the renewable electricity 

generated in the world today. 

INSTALLED CAPACITY 

is another way of saying how much power a solar power 

system is capable of producing under optimal conditions. 

Energy suppliers make that distinction because no system 

produces up to full capacity all day, every day. 

could well be one of the coolest things about having rooftop 

solar. When solar panels produce more power than a home 

or business immediately needs, the excess energy flows into 

the grid and the energy meter spins backward. The utility 

credits customers for every kW of that flowed-in power. Even 

better, it credits them at the utility rate, not their low, lockedin 

solar rates. 

REC 

(pronounced “reck”) stands for Renewable Energy Certificate. 

A REC represents 1 MW (or 1,000 KW) of electricity generated 

by a renewable source such as wind, solar, hydro or biomass. 

RECs are financial instruments, bought and sold on the open 

market. When an energy provider such as Viridian Energy 

purchases RECs to support its customers’ electricity load, 

those customers are using green energy. 

Note that we said “support its customers’ electricity load.” The 

electricity flowing into homes and businesses comes from 

the local grid, which receives energy from a variety of power 

generators. Viridian Energy can’t directly change where that 

energy comes from. But by buying RECs to back more than 

50% of our customers’ electricity usage, we help ensure the 

health and growth of the green energy industry, which leads 

to more jobs in the green energy sector, more research and 

development, and more renewable energy flowing into the grid. 

Every REC has a unique serial number that indicates when and 

where it was generated and retired. You may find information 

on all the RECs Viridian Energy purchased for reporting year 

2016, beginning on page 77. 

RESPONSIBLE ENERGY 

is a broad category, running the gamut from clean energy 

generated by wind, hydro, solar and biomass to natural gas 

usage that’s backed by carbon offsets. When we say energy 

is “responsible,” we mean that environmental concerns are 

being addressed to a reasonable and verifiable extent. 

or Renewable Portfolio Standard, is a state-by-state initiative 

that supports the development of different forms of renewable 

energy. Currently, 29 states plus the District of Columbia have 

an RPS. 

SREC 

(pronounced “ S reck”) stands for Solar Renewable Energy 

Certificate. In RPS states, homeowners and commercial entities 

who own their solar panels can earn one SREC for every MW 

generated by their solar PV system. Like RECs, SRECs are a 

way of incentivizing solar energy generators and supporting 

the growth of solar. Check out the In Your Backyard section on 

page 94 to see how many SRECs Viridian Energy purchases 

from individuals just like you. 

SUSTAINABILITY 

is an acknowledgment that there are limits to what our 

environment can provide. It means using our natural resources 

in a disciplined, mindful and creative way, in an effort to make
