A MESSAGE FROM:
THE CHAIRMAN
Good afternoon and welcome to Homelands for this Southern Counties East Football
League Premier Division League fixture. Today we welcome the players, officials and
supporters of Cray Valley and I wish you all a pleasant visit.
Notwithstanding City’s gritty performance last Saturday to secure a 1 -1 draw away
at Sheppey United, today’s opposition will be even tougher with high flying Cray currently
sitting 4th in the league table just 14 points off the top spot. That said, City
have now firmly made 9th spot their own which is only 12 points behind Cray Valley.
With the table being that close this far into the season, there is all to play for today
as 3 points today would position City nicely to improve upon their league position
before the season finale if we can keep the current form going.
Off the pitch work carries on as regards City’s proposed new stadium near Bridge in
South Canterbury and I hope by the next home game there will be a further update
in that regard which I can share with you adding to the positivity around the club at
the moment both on and off the pitch.
Enjoy the match.
FIRST TEAM NEWS
City v Tunbridge Wells:
Pat Nzuzi is celebrates with Matt Martin
after Matt had scored City’s 5th in a 5-0
victory over Tunbridge Wells. Also, on the
score sheet were Dave Pilcher 3, and Laurence
Harvey.
City v Erith & Belvedere:
A misty Wednesday evening, and a
team scrapping for points to avoid
a bottom two finish, was made
even harder for City after a 35th
minute red card.
However, 2-1 a victory came
thanks to goas from Rob Lawrence
and Dave Pilcher and a solid team
effort.
Sheppey United v City:
A 1-1 draw kept City’s unbeaten
run going - it’s now 9 games
unbeaten in the League.
Alfie was back playing in midfield
on Saturday, and we see
him here skipping over a challenge.
WHAT THE PAPERS SAID THIS WEEK IN… MARCH
Snippets of news from activities involving Canterbury City, mainly during their Southern League years,
as published in the Kent Gazette.
1965
City’s footballers nearly caused a major storm when they threatened to walk off the field during the
second half of their 3-2 defeat away to Southern League Division One promotion contenders Burton
Albion. In a turbulent match at Eton Park, City twice came from behind, but at one point made a
move towards walking off the pitch after having two goals disallowed. Johnny Ray, a last minute replacement
for the absent Tommy Dick, and Jeff Hodgkins got the visitors goals which did count.
1970
That special magic Canterbury City kept for the footballing elite cast its spell again to conjure up two
of their best earned Southern League points against Cambridge City at Kingsmead Stadium. Cambridge,
second in the division and fielding a side that read like a footballers’ Who’s Who, were the
distinguished visitors. Leaping from the middle of the table to second place in a matter of weeks, and
fresh from a 5-0 win at Salisbury, they were favourites for the points.
But Canterbury were in fine form and they took the lead before half time when Roy Hare powered
home a header from Phil Stonebridge’s cross. It was Hare’s 18th goal of the season. The second goal,
came when Hare got to the by-line and pulled the ball back for Ellam to shoot. Goalkeeper Peacock
could only palm the ball down and Moss blasted home from close range. Hayes scored Cambridge’s
consolation.
1971
Canterbury City went down 4-0 at home to top of the table Guildford in a Southern League match.
Canterbury found themselves a goal down within the first 10 seconds as Hare, Walton and Dempsey
watched Guildford striker Tyler steer the ball into an empty goal. The referee, Mr Stan Lover, awarded
two penalties and booked four players. Alf Bentley, the Canterbury manager said he would make
an official protest against Mr Lover, and Guildford, who were victorious, said they would do the
same.
1972
Canterbury City, fielding three new players, suffered their worst defeat of the season when they went
down 6-2 to Dover in the Kent Floodlit Football League. Four goals in the final half hour sank Canterbury,
although manager Alf Bentley also used three players with limited experience as well as the
new men. Canterbury’s scorers were an own goal and one from Tony Hunter
1974
Spurs boss Bill Nicholson made a personal check on the form of Canterbury’s Kenny Rogers during
their match at Wealdstone, which City lost 3-1. Nicholson made the short journey from White Hart
Lane after his scouts had recommended Rogers, signed from Gillingham.
1980
A first half performance described by manager Brian Yeo as their worst of the season meant there
was not much to excite supporters as City shared a drab goalless home Southern League draw against
Crawley. Despite being assisted by a considerable breeze, City played badly before the break but later
improved, with their best chance falling to Peter Venn, who completely mishit his shot after good
work by Dave Crush, Bryn Lloyd and Ray Hales.
5

WHAT THE PAPERS SAID THIS WEEK IN… MARCH
An equaliser on the break just five minutes from time denied City maximum points as they
were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Bognor in the Southern League. Bryn Lloyd and Dave
Crush were the two marksmen for City who, just three days earlier had gone down 4-2 at Hastings
where Ray Hales was on target twice.
1984
Brian Yeo resigned as Canterbury City manager, blaming the pressure of running his own business,
two newsagents shops, while former City boss Alf Bentley, 52, quit as manager of Folkestone.
City secretary Mike Buscall, the man Yeo had replaced nearly five years earlier as manager,
agreed to take the team again until a permanent appointment could be made. Yeo, installed
in July 1979 after a boardroom reshuffle which saw Maidstone businessman John Baxter
installed as chairman, had led City to the Kent Senior Trophy in his first season, but had
gone 10 games without a win before his resignation.
1985
Canterbury City goalkeeper Dave Huddart was ordered to rest a knee injury, the latest blow to
an injury ravaged season, after a cartilage operation, two broken ribs and losing the top of a
finger in a work accident. With reserve Andy Widdett also injured, and Stefan Poole no longer
available on Saturdays, manager Alf Bentley signed Peter Carman, formerly with Ashford and
Dover.
1995
Talks on the future of crisis-hit Kingsmead Stadium continued between the shareholders, the
city council and Canterbury City Football Club. Greyhound racing had been suspended for
more than a month since police raided a meeting because the licence had not been renewed.
WHAT THEY SAID ABOUT US
15/03/17 Canterbury City 2 Erith & Belvedere 1 R Lawrence, D Pilcher
The Erith & Belvedere website still shows a match report from our earlier fogged of match.
There was a spell when the mist
around Homelands started to get a
bit thicker, and with City 2-0 up this
time it started to make you think
the worst again.
E & B pulled a goal back through
Seb Schoburg, but City collected
the three points for what was their
7th win in a row.
LAST TIME WE HOSTED:
CRAY VALLEY (PM) - part 1
We take a look back at last seasons game here at Homelands, played December 19th 2015, as reported
by Kevin Olver, which saw the visitors score the only goal of the game.
The first few minutes of the game hinted that we may be in for an exciting incident packed match as
Ryan Philpott held the ball up well and rolled it on for Chevan Xavier running down the right. His
great cross was fizzed into the Cray box, but the ball slid just past Jordan Casey, arriving with speed,
where any sort of touch would almost certainly have opened the scoring. Immediately after, Cray
themselves broke rapidly and City keeper Shannon Harris was forced to sprint well outside of his box
to clear the ball to safety, so with action at both ends already and two crunching but poor tackles
from Cray, it boded well for an interesting afternoon.
Unfortunately the dynamics of the game were completely changed with the early sending off. A Cray
move down the right saw the ball played inside. It held up on the artificial surface, bobbled about
and that, combined with the nippiness of Cray danger man Byron Walker, was enough to catch out
City centre-half Ben Gorham who clipped the striker bringing him tumbling to the floor. With the
defender being the last man, it was, unfortunately for Gorham and for City, an automatic red card
and City were left to play the majority of the game a man light. Cray had instant opportunities to
make their advantage count. Firstly the resultant free-kick was wastefully fired straight at the City
wall but deflected out for a corner which was then swung in with venom thumping against the outside
of the upright and going out for a goal-kick.
City made the decision to go with three at the back instead of replacing the departed Gorham with
another defender or dropping someone back to maintain a back four - with Sam Staunton and Danny
Lawrence appearing to drop back a little to support their depleted defence. For the next few minutes
though it was City that looked the more positive as Philpott cut inside from the corner of the box and
dipped a shot just over the bar, Jamie Bosio surged forward from full-back but fired his forty-yarder
well over while Dave Pilcher was inches away from converting a Casey cross.
City were presented with an uphill struggle soon after though when the visitors took the lead. A
move down the right was being covered by Bosio, but he slipped at the crucial moment allowing a
cross to be floated over and Luke Harvey rose to glance a header home from a couple of yards out
for 0-1. City were quick with a response when Lawrence and Pilcher combined well to set Xavier on
his way, but the winger fluffed his lines, skewing the cross straight out.
The game then went through a twenty minute flat and uninspiring period and became a bit of a midfield
slog, with very little created at either end. City were working hard as they had to do, but Cray,
short on too much quality, were already showing signs of being confused as to whether to press
home their numerical advantage and attack or stick on their goal advantage and defend. In fact, as
the half was seemingly meandering to a quiet and pedestrian end, it was City who looked the first to
break the apparent stalemate, when Lawrence glided though midfield and skipped past two challenges
but hit his low snap-shot just wide.
Having said all that though, the last few minutes of the half belonged to Cray. Walker cut inside and
from a promising position hit his shot high and wide while a Cray corner was swung over and cannoned
off the face of the City bar. A dangerous free-kick was brilliantly defended away with his head
by Sam Baker, while another corner was again fired in direct at the City goal, this time just hitting the
side netting. There was a lot for City to do at the break, being as they were, a goal and a man down.
The opening period of the second-half saw City under pressure. Baker, Bosio and Staunton all had to
put in telling defensive tackles or clearances, while Harris scooped up a dangerous low cross. City
almost put themselves into trouble when a one-two between Harris and Lawrence saw the keeper
slip and Walker pounce on the loose ball but roll his shot wide of an open goal. Rory Hill then wasted
another golden opportunity for Cray when with time and space he skied his shot well over the City
bar.
8

LAST TIME WE HOSTED:
CRAY VALLEY (PM) - part 2
City weathered that early storm and were starting to see more of the ball and getting forward. Pilcher
played a cracking long diagonal pass across the park for Xavier who made for the box and slipped the
ball inside where Pilcher himself had raced forward to receive it before shooting across goal but just
wide. The same player then saw his corner hit the cross bar direct with Rob French in the Cray goal
beaten before the ball was scrambled out for another corner which was hurriedly headed out at the far
post.
City were looking by far the more impressive as they sought an equaliser, but Cray did have a moment
when Walker attacked down the right but was denied by a fine one handed save from Harris. City were
working tirelessly as Cray were already doing their best to wind down the clock with all those niggly
and irritating time wasting moves that everyone in the ground seems to see except the officials! Xavier
went on a superb break from the halfway line, flying past and through several tackles into the box only
to see his fine shot well pushed out two-handed by a diving French - a quality move that deserved a
goal on the end of it.
City continued to press and Pilcher went close when he fired over when well placed - albeit in a very
crowded Cray box, he then saw a corner tipped away from danger by a full-stretch French before, the
keeper climbed well to take another dangerous City corner well above his head. City were getting forward
in droves and the visitors had no answer except to get everybody back, batten down the hatches
and waste time. Philpott charged down a clearance and burst into the box only to be thwarted by
French sliding out to make an excellent block. Matt Martin came on to replace Xavier, but with City
needing to push forward, there was always a possibility they would be susceptible to the break and
Walker, looking to be Cray's one and only chance of extending their lead ran though the defence and
along the edge of the box setting up Hill, who, with just Harris to beat was off target again, wastefully
firing wide.
With three minutes to go, Lawrence went agonisingly close for City when his free-kick was pinged in
low and flew past everyone and wide when it was just begging for a touch goal wards. Cray grafted out
the rest of the match and stoppage time, frustrating City by retaining possession deep in the City half,
desperately hanging on to their lead.
All things considered, Cray can count themselves very fortunate to leave with all three points. They
should have had all the aces playing eleven v ten for virtually the whole game but ended up hanging on
and wasting time - having scored from one of only two efforts on target. City, even with their ten men
created more, worked harder and deserved much better.
Final score: City 0 Cary Valley 1.
City; Shannon Harris, Jamie Bosio, Chris Webber, Sam Staunton, Ben Gorham, Sam Baker, Ryan Philpott,
Danny Lawrence, Dave Pilcher, Jordan Casey, Chevan Xavier (Matt Martin). Un-used Subs; Adam
Woollcott, Oliver Lee, Sam Hallett, Rob Lawrence,
CRAY VALLEY (part 1)
November 26th 2011 – Kent Senior Trophy - Canterbury City 1-2 Cray Valley PM
City took the lead on thirty-nine minutes. Awarded a free kick some way out, Kennett strolled forward
unnoticed. Taking the kick quickly, Murray chipped a lovely ball in and Kennett nodded it past
Back unchallenged and with some ease. Right on half-time Cray drew level. A long through ball lured
Quinn well out of his box to clear, but Robbie Bryant was on hand to intercept the clearance and
with the keeper awol, he had a fairly straightforward task of shooting back into an empty net for the
equaliser. On seventy-four minutes Cray took the lead. Allen was on hand to shoot home low from
about twenty yards through a packed penalty area after a corner was only partially cleared, giving
Quinn little chance to see it or to react.
City; Connor Quinn, Sam Baker, Chris Elliott, Michael Scott, Grant Bagley, Renford Tenyue, Macauley
Murray, Jake Marsh, Michael Smisson, Joe Kennett, Wayon Anderson (Bobby Powell). Unused Subs;
Sean Armstrong, Sam Staunton.
March 31st 2012 – Kent League - Canterbury City (Smissen) 1-1 Cray Valley PM
City took the lead in the twenty-ninth minute when a throw from the left was fired into the Cray area
by Jack Tanner and a moment later it was in the back of the net courtesy of Smissen who turned the
ball past Carthy. Cray equalised when a corner from the left flew over Giga’s head, was headed back
across goal by Parkinson and somehow found its way into the back of the City net.
City; Giga Zulmalashvili, Michael Scott, Sam Baker, Grant Bagley, Jordan Miller, Jake Marsh (James
Gregory), Scott Punton (Jake Gess), Macauley Murray, Michael Smissen, Stacey Davies, Jack Tanner
(Richard Sinden). Unused Subs: Connor Quinn, Brendan Cullen.
August 11th 2012- Kent League - Canterbury City 2-2 Cray Valley PM
There was action in both boxes before Cray did take the lead on fourteen. A free kick swung in from
the right, glanced off a City defender’s head and was perfect for Bill Parkinson to bullet an unchallenged
header past Mann. On thirty minutes, City equalised. A ball through by Kane Rice found
Ascheri who battled to cross the ball and via two deflections it came through to Waugh who slid the
ball past the Cray keeper Jack Carthy. On forty-four minutes Cray re-established thire lead. Conteh
went down the right for Cray, cut inside shrugging off a defender and fired across Mann into the far
corner. The equaliser came on fifty-nine minutes. Waugh knocked a long ball on for Richard Atkins to
chase, he ran on, beat the defender, went through a tackle and rounded the keeper to make it 2-2.
City; Keiron Mann, Ryan Andrews, Chris Elliott, Alex Nelson, Steve Baines (Luke Webb), Grant Bagley,
Kane Rice, Ryan Morby (Sam Baker), Alex Waugh, Justin Ascheri, Richard Atkins (Simon Austin). Substitutes;
Tom Bish, Jimmy Strouts
April 9th 2014 – Southern Counties East League - Canterbury City 1-2 Cray Valley PM
City were caught by a proverbial sucker punch on sixty nine minutes when a ball floated in from the
left was volleyed home with some authority by Harrison Carnegie giving Hayward no chance. It took
the home side just three minutes to respond. Winder, with some lovely skill, attacked down the left
and picked his way into the box past two or three defenders. Showing loads of composure, he rolled
the ball across the box for Lloyd Woolford, who side-stepped the keeper and stabbed the ball into
the empty net. With just a couple of minutes left, Cray bagged a winner. A ball into the box wasn’t
dealt with and a loose header fell into space. Laurent Hamici reacted the quickest, firing home for
Cray to make the score 1-2.
City; Roddy Hayward, Alex Kendall, Sam Kettle, Matt Benstead, Steven Lloyd, Lewis Bennett, Danny
Lawrence (Rob Lawrence), Simon King, Lloyd Woolford (Dan Gonzalez-Bello), Bobby Powell, Sam
Staunton (Jack Winder). Unused Subs; Sam Baker, Lee Scott
WE’VE MET BEFORE:
CRAY VALLEY (part 2)
March 11th 2015 – Southern Counties East League -Canterbury City 0-2 Cray Valley PM
Cray took the lead on twenty-eight minutes with a scorcher of a goal. Alwayne Jones collected the ball
in midfield and moved forward. He suddenly just looked up and fired off a rocket of a shot from thirty
yards that flew into the net leaving Shannon Harris in the City goal diving and grasping at thin air. Cray
doubled their lead on fifty-two. An Adam Gross twenty yard free-kick was curled over the City wall and
just inside the post for 0-2 and the second piece of quality on the night. On seventy-eight minutes, the
visitors were awarded a penalty, but Harris made a superb diving one handed save to deny Joe
Matthews from the spot.
City; Shannon Harris, Alex Kendall, Sam Kettle (Karl Williams), Kane Hemmings (Aaron Campbell), Ben
Gorham, Nick Blackman, Danny Lawrence, Steve Baines, Dan Gonzalez-Bello, Rob Lawrence, Cameron
November 28th 2015 – Kent Senior Trophy -Canterbury City 1-1 Cray Valley PM (City won 3-1 on penalties)
In the twenty-eighth minute City took the lead through a brilliant free-kick. Rob Lawrence was fouled
right on the edge of the box and in a central position. As the wall was being organised, the Lawrence
brothers both surveyed the scene - it was the perfect range for either of them. With everybody ready,
Rob stepped forward and curled the ball with exacting precision, low and around the wall and it flew
into the side of the net. City held the lead until the sixth minute of added time at the end of the second
half when a Cray free-kick was launched into the City box. It was partially cleared by City but fell
to Bradley Potter about thirty yards from goal. He swung his boot and the ball sailed through a sea of
players and nestled in the corner of the net for a last gasp Cray equaliser. With the scores level and no
extra time to be played, the tie went immediately into penalties.
Having first strike, City were immediately on the back foot when Casey thumped his off the Cray bar.
The visitors then scored their first while Danny Lawrence netted for City to level. The next kick for Cray
was ballooned well over while Dave Pilcher then scored to give City the advantage. Harris then pulled
off a great save diving to his left to keep out Cray's next kick, leaving City well in the box seat. Gorham
fired home to increase the advantage and with the tie at match point, Harris stood firm to save again,
this time with his feet, to finally give City the victory 3-1 on penalties.
City; Shannon Harris, James Bosio, Connor Partridge, Sam Staunton, Sam Baker, Ben Gorham,Matt
Martin (Dave Pilcher), Danny Lawrence, Chevan Xavier, Rob Lawrence (Chris Webber), Sam Hallett
(Jordan Casey). Unused Subs: Adam Woollcott, Charlie Vass.
TODAY’S OPPONENTS:
CRAY VALLEY
Kent FA records show that Cray Valley Paper Mills
FC was formed in 1919, and played in the new
Sidcup and Kent League Division II. The Millers
first match was a 1-0 victory against Hamilton
House FC on September 20th 1919 which was
followed by their first away match against Sidcup
Invicta, which was won 7-0. Cray went on to win
the division in their first season and were promoted
to Division I. The following season Cray
won the Kent County Junior Cup defeating
Sittingbourne Paper Mills 3-0 in the final and the
next registered success was in 1936/37 when
they won the 3rd division title in the Kent Amateur
League West Division. From that time they
have appeared in the records in every decade,
whilst from the 1950/51 season the records show
a continuous existence up to the present day.
The Millers played in various leagues such as The
Sidcup and District League and were always
known as Cray Valley Paper Mills FC, originally
playing in green and white, which were the colours
of the paper mills vehicles, and company
banner. Cray won the Kent County Junior Cup for
the 2nd time in 1977/78, and repeated this in
1980/81, the year the mills at St. Pauls Cray,
(where they had played their games at the sports
ground), closed.
The Nash family owned the paper mills and supported
the football club until the mills closure.
Cray lost their ground, and began a nomadic existence,
playing out of various venues until they
found a permanent home at Badgers Sports
Ground in Middle Park Avenue, Eltham, South
East London. It was at this time the ‘Paper Mills’
was abbreviated to (PM)!
The first team enjoyed a successful period in the
South London Alliance, winning Division 1 in
1983/84, before moving to the Spartan League in
1991, where they were runners up in division 1
South in 1998. Cray then became founder members
of the London Intermediate League, in the
following season were runners up, and reached
the final of the league cup, losing 1-2 to Bridon
Ropes aet, whilst they were also runners up in
the London Intermediate Cup, losing to Canning
Town 0-1. In 2001/02 Cray were elected to join
Division One of the Kent County League, gaining
promotion to the Premier division in 2003/04.
Cray’s most successful season was 2004/05,
when they won the Premier division by 11 points,
along with the Kent Intermediate Challenge
Shield, and the Inter Regional Challenge Cup.
Between 2000-2010 Cray enjoyed regular successes
in the London Intermediate Cup, which
has seen them win the competition four times
and come runners-up once. In an historic
2011/12 season, Cray effectively gained two promotions,
when they moved from the Step 7 Kent
County League, to the Step 5 Kent Hürliman
League. In their first season finishing a very creditable
11th and reaching the semi final of the
Kent Senior Trophy.
Season 2012-13 saw an improvement on the
previous campaign with an 8th placed finish and
13 more points on the board in 2013-14 they
advanced one place higher to 7th, whilst reaching
the semi final of the London Senior Cup narrowly
losing to eventual winners Wimbledon FC. We
also experienced our first taste of the FA Cup,
beating Lancing away before losing to Redhill.
Manager Steve Chapman hand over the reins to
Paul Gross and despite a disappointing start to
the season, Grossy emulated the achievement of
his predecessor by finishing 7th in the newly
named Southern Counties East Football League
and reaching the semi final of the London Senior
Cup, losing narrowly to Tooting & Mitcham.
After 2 seasons in charge, Gross resigned and this
season the club have appointed James Collins to
guide the club forward.
Our club development continues to flourish and
last season the Reserves reached the Suburban
League Plate Final while our Ladies team won the
South East Counties Women’s League Division
One and reached two Cup finals.
This week’s NLP programme column below,
written by Joshua Peck.
So it’s decided then. York City, Macclesfield
Town, South Shields and Cleethorpes Town
will don their best suits to appear at Wembley
on May 21.
York and Macclesfield will battle for the FA
Trophy while Northern League high-flyers
South Shields will battle Cleethorpes in the
FA Vase showpiece event.
It is the second year that both finals have
been played on the same day at the same
venue following the success of the 2016
event, which saw Morpeth Town lift the Vase
while FC Halifax Town beat Grimsby to win
the Trophy.
While some will argue that playing both finals
on the same day takes away the gloss for the
teams competing, there’s no doubt at NLP
HQ that this is the best route. It really does
celebrate Non-League and with BT Sport
broadcasting both finals live, it’s showtime
that these teams don’t often receive.
Hereford boosted the attendance under the
Arch last year to 46,781, though the Bulls
fans saw their team crash under the pressure
as Chris Swailes became the oldest scorer at
the new Wembley to put Morpeth back on
level terms at the age of 45 after they went
behind inside a minute and a half.
The Northern League went on to win 4-1 and
Swailes couldn’t hide his delight after lifting
the trophy ten months ago.
Swailes said: “It's a dream come true. It’s not
just me out there – the lads gave a massive
effort, especially after going 1-0 down within
a minute and 20 seconds.
“We have come into the game after the first
20 minutes and then dominated. It could
have been more than four I think which just
shows you what a good group of lads we
have got.
“It's just a bonus that we've come this far;
the camaraderie we have got, the competitive
edge, to turn up to the dressing room for
the banter, I just want to keep on being a
part of it.
“I'm a big kid at heart and I want to continue
being a big kid.”
That’s exactly what this day is about – living
the dream. The Vase is the only opportunity
for teams in Step 5 and below to reach the
home of English football, and for Cleethorpes
and South Shields fans, the Sunday in May
will be a day they never forget.
For York and Macclesfield supporters, they
have seen glory before and will hope it’s not
long before they see it again, but for now,
let’s enjoy Non-League finals day and make it
a true celebration of football outside the 92.
Match Day Sponsor & Man of the Match for the John Barlow Award
This season in honour of
the late John Barlow we
will be inviting our match
day sponsors to chose the
man of the match, and
present the award. At the
end of the season the player
with the most awards
will be presented with the
John Barlow trophy.
Today’s match sponsor is Ernie West from Canterbury, and
we are very grateful for his support.
Ernie isn’t able to get to as many home games as he would
like, but we have seen him on the coach trips for our FA Cup
and FA Vase matches.
Ernie will be choosing todays man of the Match and presenting
him a reward after the game
Thanks Ernie, for sponsoring today’s game.
The current standings are Daren Hawkes (1), Connor Partridge (1), Gary Clarke (1), Danny
Lawrence (1), Dave Pilcher (3), Matt Martin (1), Sam Conlon (2), Laurence Harvey (3),
Alfie Nunn (1), Toby Wood (1), Gary Mickelborough (2)
15/03/17 City v Erith & Belvedere - Man of the Match, Gary Mickelborough
Match Day Sponsor, Dave Morgan
wasn’t able to be at the
game due to other commitments,
so our Chairman was on
hand to present Gary Mickelborough
with his Man of the Match
award.
It was another good all round
performance after City were
reduced to 10 men early in the
game. Gary was the main
attacking point as City pushed
forward, as Alfie Nunn was forced to cover as centre back and Dave Pilcher took a deeper
role than normal.
However, Gary created a number of chances with his powerful runs, not only for himself
and his team mates. His shots at goal during this match forced the keeper to make a couple
of good saves.
What They Said About Us… at Sheppey Utd
A slightly different slant to this article this week - I couldn’t actually find a report on the
Sheppey website but managed to find this item on a Ground Hopper forum. Describing the
set-up, facilities and history is more important than the game!
Southern Counties East League (Premier Division) 3pm
Sheppey United 1 Canterbury City 1 (H/T 1-1)
Entry - £7 adults
Programme - 24 pages for £1 (decent issue mainly in colour and glossy)
Crowd - 270 on league site, looked about 200?
I decided on this game as the weather was better in the south-east, also I was keen on a
return to the Isle of Sheppey after a 33 year gap (my visit to the old ground was on the last
day of 1983, and I never used the Sheerness-Vlissingen ferry route on my trips abroad.)
The new ground, Holm Park, is only 15 minute walk from Queenborough station although I
only used this after the game, which finished later than expected. When I arrived I used
Sheerness-on-Sea station and had a look at the site of the old ground which is now covered
by houses with a new road called Botany Close going through what was the pitch. I then
walked to Holm Park which is about 35 minute walk from Sheerness-on-Sea station. The
walk took me past the nearby ground of Sheerness East FC where match-day activity was
visible.
Holm Park is an impressive venue, considering that it was only built (on the site of an existing
sports ground) as recently as 2013. The entrance has a turnstile block and is surrounded
by bright red fencing. The ground has an Atcost stand on one side and thanks to a
slope this is slightly elevated above pitch level, although it does face into the sun. There is a
two-step terrace behind one goal and hard-standing around the rest of the pitch along with
floodlights and there is even a small electronic scoreboard/clock in one corner of the
ground. There is also a two-storey clubhouse/dressing-room building, although this is constructed
from portable units and as such lacks a lift for disabled people to get to the top
floor, where the bar facilities are. To rectify this a second temporary bar has been built at
ground level.
The game was quite an entertaining one, although Sheppey had most of the chances. They
seem to be well supported and should go from strength to strength.
