Sidmouth

‘A town caught still in a timeless charm’
That was the Sidmouth that captivated the
Poet Laureate, John Betjeman, and it will
captivate you, too.
Beautiful gardens and leisurely walks, Regency
history and fine hotels, clean beaches and
friendly shops…. it’s all here in this lovely
seaside town that nestles beneath majestic
red cliffs and the green hills of the glorious Sid
Valley.
Leaf through these pages to discover why so
many ‘Visit Sidmouth’ to relax and unwind
through all the seasons of the year. You will
discover, too, why so many return.
This town guide is produced by
A Town with a rich history
Extract from the 1917-18 Sidmouth Town Guide:
Sidmouth
The place and the people
This sunny little Devon town, which may, without flight of
fancy, be likened to the home of a modern parallel of the
Goddess Hygéia, stands in a perfectly ideal situation. It
is located in the centre of beautifully wooded scenery, its
south front touched by the waters of a great bay, stretching
eastward from Start Point, on the extreme south coast of the
county, as far as Portland Bill, in the the county of Dorset.
Sidmouth nestles in an inner bay, between two great rocky
formations of bright and varied tint, their caps clothed in
brilliant green turf. Far away inland stretch lovely hills
and fertile valleys through which wind picturesque roads,
lanes and streams, the flower-decked landscape basking for
the greater part of the year in soft sunshine, or under skies
whose tints and tones rival the variant glories of the Tropics.
A Sidmouth sunset, with its splendid ever-changing tints -
gold, turquoise, crimson, emerald and violet - is a spectacle to
linger in the mind for a lifetime.
4

The architecture reveals the history
Much of Sidmouth’s history is gleaned from the Blue Plaques on the buildings which
mirror the era when the nobility and members of London Society built fine houses here.
Many still exist, while others have become hotels without losing their Regency charm. The
cob walled coffee shop (formerly the Old Ship Inn) originally thought to be a monastery,
dates back to 1350 and it was certainly a smugglers’ rendezvous in the days of “brandy for
the parson” and “baccy for the clerk”.
Kennaway House
Fortfield Terrace is another example of the style of the day. Here, a double-headed eagle
commemorates the stay of the Grand Duchess of Russia in 1831. She brought a retinue
of 100 gentlemen, ladies and servants and among the guests at a reception she gave
was the Sidmouth artist and historian, Peter Orlando Hutchinson (POH), whose diaries
and sketches are a vivid picture of 19th century life in Sidmouth. Copies are among the
treasures at the Museum next to the ancient parish church of St. Giles and St. Nicholas.
Look out for POH logos throughout the town.
Toll House
East Devon &
Dorset Coast,
World Heritage Site
The striking red cliffs around Sidmouth were formed in
a baking desert some 240 million years ago during the
Triassic period of geological time. Huge rivers flowed
across a desert, rather like the Nile flowing through the
Sahara today. But this all happened a very long time
ago so how can you explore the World Heritage Site
today?
Your first port of call could be the excellent Jurassic
Coast Interpretation Centre on the Esplanade.
Sidmouth Museum contains information and holds
events exploring the World Heritage Site.
6
Why not take a walk along the coast path to Branscombe
and Beer? Here, younger rocks, the upper greensands
and chalk cap the cliffs and the combination has given
rise to the spectacular Hooken Landslide. These younger
rocks are the source of fine building stones that have
been used in the construction of Exeter Cathedral.

Quality & Variety of Shops
Pride in traditional service and courtesy is reflected in a
remarkable variety of shops.
“Why go elsewhere when everything is here...” is a
comment often heard in many a household in the town.
Big stores and speciality shops, gift shops and dress
shops, ladies boutiques and gentlemen’s outfitters, dairy
shops and market stalls, all create a friendly welcome that
makes shopping in Sidmouth so leisurely and enjoyable.
8

The way shopping
used to be
They make a fascinating and delightful mix which,
like the elegant seafront frontages, is central
to Sidmouth’s unspoilt character, not least in
summer when a riot of floral colour hangs and
trails from every ledge and vantage point.
“Sidmouth is a beautiful and relaxing town with a
wide variety of lovely shops and places to eat, all
offering excellent, friendly service.”
Sidmouth Chamber of Commerce
A golfing jewel in the crown is a fitting description of Sidmouth
Golf Club. Overlooking Sidmouth and situated on the wooded
western slopes of the Sid Valley, the course enjoys wonderful sea
views from sheltered and undulating fairways. The fine clubhouse
also provides a panoramic view of the Devon and Dorset coastline
of Lyme Bay and beyond.
Sidmouth Regatta and Fireworks, Band concerts in
Sidbury Fair - History
September 13th – September 17th 2017
Sidbury was granted a charter for a Fair in 1291 by Edward 1 when he was up in
Berwick upon Tweed. The fair was to be held for three days to cover the feast of
the Virgin Mary in September. Hot pennies are still thrown into the street for the
children to collect - a boon for the equally impoverished villagers of the time, and
still continues today.
Sidbury Fair has grown over the years with local produce and craft stalls, competitions
etc and a livestock auction still takes place. Over the years the fair has extended to
a whole week of events and gives local clubs and organisations an opportunity to
raise funds. The fair Committee is made up of local residents and is chaired by Sir
John Cave of Sidbury Manor.
across onto a surfaced lane (bridleway, private road to Knowle park
house). Pass Boswell Farm cottages and cross a cattle grid into the
park and a second cattle grid at Knowle House.
e) In the field corner cross a bridge over the stream and go uphill
keeping to the right of a hedge into trees. Go through a gate and bear
right, ignoring a footpath on the left, to come out of the trees. Follow
the field path, keeping to the left of the woods, then over a stile back
into the woods and ascending to a main road.
f) Turn right and in 50 yards carefully cross the road onto a footpath
through trees. Where the path joins a lane, turn right and continue
straight on downhill past a road junction. Where the lane turns
sharply right, go left onto a footpath (sign Fir Tree Cottage). Follow
the broad track – then lesser track (marked) on the left.
g) At footpath junction turn right downhill, the path becomes a lane and
follow to the main road at Fortescue. Turn left, after 100 yards turn
right onto a footpath (Sidmouth seafront 1.5 miles) and cross the
river.
h) Follow the surfaced track back to the Byes footpath and turn left to
retrace your outward journey back to the Tourist Office.
d) At Knowle House follow bridleway sign left and after a few yards turn
right onto another signed bridleway. At the road turn left through a
wall past houses. The road swings to the right, at the end turn left
through a gate and almost immediately right onto a footpath. Follow
the path through way marked gates and at the third gate go through
and turn right downhill over a grassy field.
Sixth Sidmouth
Science Festival 7th
to 15th October 2017
Sidmouth Science Festival 2017
The sixth Sidmouth Science Festival runs from Friday
6th to Sunday 15th October 2017 with the theme of
“Science in our Lives”.
The events during the week will cater for all ages
and abilities with projects and demonstrations taking
place in schools and colleges, and a number of talks
throughout the town. Serious science talks and fun
hands-on events take place in town on Saturday 14th
and at a family day on Sunday 15th at the Norman
Lockyer Observatory.
28
Ada Lovelace Day on Tuesday 10th October, an
international celebration of the achievements of
women in science, will be hosted by the University of
Exeter.

Various community groups will contribute events during the
week, too.
In 2016 guest speakers included Simon Singh MBE and Prof
Mike Benton FRS. There was also a dedicated Earth Science
hall, 3D film and a very large dinosaur! The Family Fun Day
included a model jet car race as well as many other activities
for young people. The interactive science trail along the
seafront proved very popular with families, too.
So there is something for everyone!
Throughout the year the Science Festival runs a Cafe
Scientifique which meets once a month, except in August, to
listen to a science speaker and discuss the topic.
The countryside around Sidmouth is so precious that it
has been designated as an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty’ or ‘AONB’. The East Devon AONB is just that –
outstanding! It is part of the same family of protected
landscapes that also includes National Parks. In addition
the geology of East Devon and Dorset coastline is so
special that it has been designated as England’s first
SIDMOUTH CIVIC ARBORETUM is a new interpretation of an Arboretum – which is a
collection of trees and shrubs. Our Arboretum covers the entire Sid Valley, not just one site.
We encourage new planting, and give advice and support for maintenance so that the plants
flourish.
Our TREE TRAIL LEAFLETS prove popular as they encourage visitors and residents alike to
explore the rich heritage which is Sidmouth’s treescape, and to value its contribution to
present and future generations. Pick up a leaflet at the Tourist Information Centre, hotels,
or local shops.
Our TREE TALKS AND WALKS bring together a wide range of interests – birds, bats, health
and well-being, as well as climate change, pests and diseases that threaten trees. They guide
us to the best of spring blossom and autumn leaf colour up and down the valley.
villages

Salcombe Regis, Sidbury and Sidford
There is no finer English village setting than at Salcombe Regis. Unspoilt and secluded,
in May it comes alive with the annual Country Fair.
It is also the home of the famous Donkey Sanctuary.
Sidbury, with its lovely cottage frontages and
gardens, is another haven of tranquil village
charm. No wonder it has won the Best Kept Village
competition so many times.
Sidford is named after the ford that used to cross
the River Sid - where now you find the Packhorse
Bridge.
A pleasure to visit at any time of year
© Simon Horn lrps
Even in the winter months, there is often a
balmy day to relax in the sun. Many of our
hotels remain open throughout the year.
Sidmouth, indeed, brings its own special
festive joy for those who spend Christmas
here. What better way of walking off the
excesses of the season than a stroll across
Jacob’s Ladder beach. In the Byes you
might even spot the first green shoot of
an early Spring.
38

Days out locally and further afield
From Sidmouth you can visit many interesting places without travelling far. Buses
run regularly into the City of Exeter where a visit to the Cathedral can offer both
tranquillity and architectural delight. The City’s excellent shopping centre provides
retail therapy to suit every taste.
A car drive across the stunning scenery of Dartmoor is a must for anyone visiting
Devon.
There are places even closer to explore; Budleigh Salterton, Honiton, Ottery St. Mary
and the beautiful Axe Valley are all close by, as are many and varied picturesque
villages just waiting to be found.
Quality has never meant so much
All the accommodation featured in this
guide has been quality assessed by either
VisitBritain* or the AA, or has recently
applied for a rating and is awaiting
assessment. Please be aware that ratings
may change throughout the year.
To confirm a rating please visit
www.enjoyEngland.com or telephone
VisitBritain on 0208 563 3309 or email:
feedback@visitbritain.org
For AA ratings, visit www.theAA.com
or telephone: 01256 844455 or email:
customer.services@theAA.com
All the national assessing bodies (Visit
Britain*, Visit Scotland, Visit Wales and
the AA) now assess hotels and guest
accommodation (including B&Bs) to the
same criteria and award one to five stars.
The star ratings reflect the overall quality of
the experience.
When choosing your accommodation
look for the Quality Rose, the official
marque of the Enjoy England national
tourist board rating scheme.
The Enjoy England professional assessors
visit every year, carrying out a routine
day visit or an overnight stay in the case
of serviced accommodation. On these
occasions, they book in as you would, as a
76
normal guest and test all the facilities and
services. A quality score is awarded for
every aspect of the experience including
the comfort of the bed, the quality of the
breakfast and dinner and, most importantly,
the cleanliness. They also score the warmth
of welcome.
Places that ‘go the extra mile’ to make
your stay a special one, will be awarded
a high star rating and hotels and guest
accommodation may achieve a Gold or
Silver award.
For self-catering
accommodation, the
layout and design of the
accommodation and the range
and quality of the kitchen
equipment is assessed,
as well as the quality and comfort of
the bedrooms and bathrooms and most
importantly, the cleanliness.
Higher star-rated accommodation tends
to have more spacious bedrooms and
bathrooms, and in hotels a higher staff
to guest ratio, so service should be very
attentive. At five star, you can really expect
to be pampered in luxurious surroundings!
For serviced accommodation, there are
two separate schemes – one for hotels
and one for guest accommodation.
Hotels have to be licensed, offer dinner at
least 5 nights a week (unless categorised as
a Metro Hotel) and have all rooms en suite
or with private bathrooms.
The different hotel categories
are: Hotel, Small Hotel,
Country House Hotel, Metro
Hotel Town House Hotel and
Budget Hotel.
Guest accommodation
categories are: Guest
Accommodation, Bed and
Breakfasts, Guest Houses,
Inns, Farmhouses and
Restaurants with Rooms.
They tend to be personally run by the
owners.
Guest Accommodation –
Diamonds and Stars
The diamond ratings that were previously
awarded to guest accommodation (B&Bs,
Guest Houses etc) are gradually being
replaced by stars. You will find some entries
in this guide with diamond ratings and some
with star ratings. The new star ratings are
designed to meet the greater expectations
of consumers with regards to quality and
facilities. Higher ratings are therefore more
difficult to achieve than under the previous
scheme.

For further information visit www.enjoyEngland.com
In this guide you may find, for example
guest accommodation that previously held a
4 diamond rating and has been re-assessed
under the new standards as 3 stars. It does
not necessarily mean that their quality
standards have dropped.
Gold and
Silver awards
for Hotels
and Guest
Accommodation
Silver Awards
recognise exceptional quality at all levels
and Gold Awards are given to the very ‘best
of the best’.
Holiday, touring, and
camping parks and holiday
villages:
Enjoy England awards star
ratings reflecting the overall
quality of the park from one to five stars
- five stars being reserved for parks of
exceptional quality.
100% Quality Assessed
with VisitEngland means
that the star ratings provided
to the accommodation, are
independently assessed every
year to National Quality
Standards.
Enjoy England ratings made easy:
* Simple, practical, no frills
** Well presented and well run
*** Good level of quality and comfort
**** Excellent standard throughout
***** Exceptional with a degree of luxury
If you choose to stay in any of Enjoy
England’s quality-assessed accommodation,
you can be confident that it has been
checked out before you check in. For more
information on the Enjoy England Quality
Rose assessment schemes and the star
ratings, go to www.enjoyEngland.com
Sponsored by Kellogg’s, this award
recognises those hotels and B&Bs
that offer their guests a quality and
choice of breakfast, service and
hospitality that exceeds what would
be expected at their star rating. It
will help visitors find those places
where the owners, managers, chefs and staff
have gone the extra mile to ensure the breakfast
will exceed expectations.
The Jurassic Coast Quality Business
Scheme aims to help meet the
expectations associated with World
Heritage status for a quality-led
sustainable tourism experience.
Successful businesses have to
demonstrate a range of good practices and a
commitment to raising standards of customer care.
*VisitBritain is the national tourism agency,
marketing Britain worldwide and England
in Britain, France, Germany, Ireland and the
Netherlands. Quality is a major element of
VisitBritain’s strategy to improve tourism
products and services and the standard
of welcome visitors receive. VisitBritain
assesses more than 23,000 accommodation
businesses across nine different Enjoy
England schemes. These assessments
are undertaken by Quality in Tourism on
VisitBritain’s behalf.
This award shows the mobility
entry level standard (M1) of the
National Accessible Scheme
(NAS) based on the needs of
older and less mobile visitors.
SIDMOUTH IS NOW A FAIRTRADE TOWN
In August 2016, Sidmouth was awarded Fairtrade status for its commitment to Fairtrade principles, thanks to the efforts of local
campaigners.
Fairtrade helps small-scale farmers ensure they earn stable incomes and have long-term contracts with companies. In addition,
they earn the Fairtrade Premium, which they invest as the farmer-owned co-operative democratically chooses, in projects that
will benefit their business or community.
Over 4,500 products are now licensed to carry the FAIRTRADE Mark, from food and drink through clothing and homewares to
flowers, sports balls and jewellery.
For more information on the Sidmouth campaign, contact Wendy on 01395 512739 or email wendyspratling@gmail.com
Welcome to The Sidmouth Town Centre Directory...
Whether you are looking for the perfect gift for that special person or
need to indulge yourself, there is always something awaiting you in
Sidmouth’s fabulous and unique shops.
Sidmouth businesses offer the type of courtesy which was once the norm
and now more rarely found; Sidmouth makes no excuse for offering a
shopping experience in the way ‘it used to be’. We are delighted to say that
in our friendly town you will be made welcome at whichever of the many
businesses you use in this our Town Directory.
After your shopping experience, take time to enjoy fine dining; from a pot of
tea or frothy coffee to a full meal, every establishment will provide a friendly
and courteous service.
Please mention seeing this Directory when you use any of the businesses
contained within the following pages.
We hope you find the Town Directory and the individual street maps both
helpful and informative.
