The Tee Time Interview PGA Professional Mark Lloyd joined Macdonald Hotels & Resorts in June 2016 before being appointed Director of Golf at Macdonald Hill Valley Hotel, Golf & Spa in October. The Shropshire based resort offers two challenging golf courses, both designed by distinguished TV commentator Peter Aliss and former Ryder Cup player Dave Thomas in 1975, making it one of the UK’s leading golf venues. What makes Macdonald Hill Valley Hotel, Golf & Spa so special for visiting golfers and corporate golf events? The Par-73 Emerald Championship Course is 6,714 yards in length and features undulating fairways, natural water hazards and strategically placed bunkers. At 4,801 yards, the shorter, Par-66 Sapphire course is slightly more forgiving than the Emerald course, but its tight greens ensure the course is an enjoyable experience for visiting golfers. Away from the golf course, visiting golfers are also able to experience the resort, which is located amid acres of peaceful gardens, yet conveniently close to motorway networks. The recently refurbished 4-star hotel offers 86 well equipped bedrooms, with its relaxed country club ambience and stylish, modern interiors helping to ensure an unforgettable stay. What's your favourite hole at Macdonald Hill Valley Hotel, Golf & Spa and why? We are fortunate to have two great golf courses and some really fantastic golf holes, but I would have to say that my favourite hole is the 18th on the Emerald Championship Course. The Tee Time Interview Describe the difference between playing at your course in the summer to a round in the winter? How would the course differ? Are there particular seasonal challenges? The green keeping staff do an amazing job to ensure the golf courses are in great condition, while the good drainage of the courses enables visiting golfers to have a memorable round of golf whatever time of year they visit. However, the big difference in playing the two courses between the summer and winter is with the trees. We have around 40,000 trees lining the fairways, so there is a little more forgiveness on any stray shots during the winter months. What programs are there at Macdonald Hill Valley Hotel, Golf & Spa for junior golfers? The Sapphire Course provides an ideal opportunity for junior golfers to get involved in the game as it's relatively short, so you don’t have to hit the ball long distances, but the tree-lined fairways help to promote accuracy from the tee, which is a great lesson to learn. Encouraging more juniors to take up the game is something I am passionate about, so in <strong>2017</strong> I will be looking to introduce a number of junior classes and to work with local schools in order to attract the next generation of golfer. Have you ever made a hole-in-one? If so, what course and how did you celebrate? I have only ever had one hole-in-one and it was while I was playing socially with friends and aside from a few high-fives, the celebrations were fairly relaxed. However, I remember it was slightly different when I made an albatross on the 8th hole at Hawkstone Park Club, where I holed my second shot from about 220 yards.
