I
was on the road quite early Sunday
morning, heading to a volleyball tournament
in Omaha with our daughter.
I poured a mug of hot dark roast coffee
before we left, knowing Katie would kick
her seat back and sleep
during the drive. Despite
the caffeinated
beverage, I still did a
great deal of yawning,
especially for the first
hour.
There also was fog
settled into low areas
that morning, so I
found myself switching
between high- and
low-beam headlights.
Just outside Seney, I
MYRNA
WAGNER
startled myself when I noticed two deer
on the inside shoulder of the four-lane. I
always know to watch for deer at dusk and
dawn, but these startled me as I didn’t see
them until they were even with my drivers’
side door. They seemed very content hanging
out there, despite traffic on both sides of
the highway.
About 20 minutes later, a fox ran across
the road in front of me — another surprise,
but not quite as startling as the two deer.
My car would have fared better doing battle
with a fox than two deer.
Twelve hours later during our drive home,
the scenario in my car was much the same.
Me with a caffeinated beverage, Katie sleeping
in the passenger seat.
And as I passed Seney, there was a huge
bloody patch all over the inside lane of the
highway. I couldn’t help but conclude those
deer had crossed over to the northbound
lanes and met up with another vehicle
shortly after I passed by.
This time, the outcome wasn’t so good for
either of them.

The artists:
André Knevel has been an accomplished
concert organist
for more than 45 years and
maintains an international concert
schedule. He also is a regular
accompanist of several mixed
and male choirs as well as solo instruments,
such as flute, pan flute
and more.
Liselotte Rokyta is one of the
most accomplished pan flutists of
Europe. She also closely works together
with the Dutch-Canadian
organist Andre Knevel with whom
she performs in about 50 concerts
yearly in the Netherlands, Canada
and the United States.
RAISING AWARENESS
Organ and pan flute concert to benefit Word & Deed Ministries
The Rev. Bart Elshout and a group
of men representing the tristate
region are hoping to raise awareness
for Word & Deed Ministries.
The organization, headquartered in
Ontario, Canada, focuses on serving
God, bridging communities and renewing
lives.
Word & Deed will be the focus of
an organ and pan flute benefit concert
7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 5, at B.J.
Haan Auditorium at Dordt College in
Sioux Center.
There is no cost to attend the concert,
but a free-will donation will be
accepted.
Since all expenses related to the
concert are fully covered by the business
group sponsoring the event, 100
percent of all proceeds will be donated
to Word & Deed, said Elshout.
The showcase will feature performances
by concert organist André
Knevel and pan flutist Liselotte Rokyta,
both of whom Elshout, the new
pastor at Heritage Reformed Church
in Hull, personally knows.
This marks the first such concert
in northwest Iowa to benefit Word &
Deed.
“I formerly served churches in
British Columbia and Ontario, and
we had regular fundraising events for
Word & Deed, but nothing like this
has happened in northwest Iowa,”
Elshout said.
“This is our first attempt to raise
awareness for Word & Deed, and
that’s why we organized this fundraising
concert.”
Word & Deed partners with the
Luke Society in Ecuador to minister to
families in Quininde, a city of about
135,000 people, of which only 7,000
are employed in full-time work.
Work began in 2002 as an outreach
to women and soon grew to include
holistic care of children in the neighborhoods
of Cesar Proano, Maleon
and Dos de Mayo.
The program supports more than
300 children, offering three nutritious
meals a week, academic enrichment,
medical attention, dental care, workshops
for parents and caregivers and
Bible studies.
Elshout said Knevel and Rokyta are
well-known and highly regarded musicians
in Canada and Michigan.
He said people should turn out for
this concert for two reasons:
“First, people will greatly appreciate
the musical talent of these accomplished
artists; they make a wonderful
duo,” Elshout said.
“Secondly, people can learn more
about Word & Deed and will hopefully
be motivated to support Word &
Deed, especially the children’s ministry
in Ecuador.” F

A courtroom comedy
Big Bad Wolf on trial in April 8 production
Was the Big Bad Wolf born a
criminal, or made one?
To find out the answer, people
are encouraged to attend a student
performance of “The Big Bad
Musical” at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 8,
at Zion-St. John Lutheran School of
Paullina.
The approximately 60-minute
musical is made for a cast of 14 and
a chorus. Twenty-seven Zion-St. John
Lutheran students in the fifth-eighth
grades will perform the production
for the school’s annual spring operetta/dinner
theatre.
“With every seventh- and eighthgrade
classroom coming in with a different
personality type, we allow that
to kind of direct where we go as far
as the choice of the play,” said Daniel
Hoey, principal of Zion-St. John Lutheran
and one of the operetta’s directors.
Hoey, who also teaches the seventh
and eighth grades at the school,
thinks “The Big Bad Musical” has
been a good fit for his 14 students,
who are playing the production’s
main characters.
“This year’s personality of the
group and some of their strengths
played toward this operetta, toward
this subject of it,” Hoey said. “We’ve
got a couple of personalities that can
carry a leading role, and we’ve got a
couple of personalities that can carry
supporting roles.”
“The Big Bad Musical” is based
on the book by American writer, director
and dramatist Alec Strum, and
features music and lyrics by American
musical theatre composer Bill Francoeur.
Described as a howling and roaring
courtroom comedy, this musical
has it all — audience participation,
minimal set and costume requirements,
a good balance of stage time
for each character, multiple endings
to make every performance unique,
and Francoeur’s toe-tapping tunes.
A courtroom has never been more
lively and fun than in “The Big Bad
Musical.” This smart and wickedly
funny musical is great for actors and
audiences of any age.
The jury — the audience — must
decide the outcome of the biggest trial
ever in the fairy-tale world.
The notorious Big Bad Wolf is being
slapped with a class-action lawsuit
by quirky storybook characters
who want to get even: Little Red Riding
Hood, her Grandmother, the
Three Little Pigs and the Shepherd in
charge of the Boy Who Cried Wolf.
With Sydney Grimm as the commentator
on live Court TV, the two
greatest legal minds in the Enchanted
Forest — the Evil Stepmother and the
Fairy Godmother — clash in a trial
that will be remembered forever after.

As the wronged fairy-tale characters
testify, the wolf seems deserving
of all that’s coming.
Yet, even though the infamous
Evil Stepmother resents doing pro
bono work on such an obviously futile
defense, Mr. Wolf makes a good
case for himself.
Zion-St. John Lutheran started
rehearsing in mid-February for this
year’s operetta.
“At the beginning, we just had
within-classroom rehearsals,” Hoey
said. “We began combined practices
the week of March 20.”
Hoey has been directing the seventh-
and eighth-grade students
while fifth- and sixth-grade teachers
Char Sweeney and Jacque Bird have
been working with their students on
the production.
“We always have a significant
amount of help outside of my classroom,”
he said. “When it comes to
costumes and props, it’s one of the
things that the school does so well
with,” he said. “We have a number
of volunteers that help and make it
what it is — a big success.”
He encouraged people to attend
the operetta.
“First of all, it’s a comedy, so
come ready to laugh,” Hoey said.
“We’ve got a very good fit as far as the
characters go. The characters in the
comedy very closely align with the
personalities that you would see in
the classroom.
“The kids have worked hard to get
where they’re at now,” he said. “They
put on a good show.” F

Coalition — a collaboration between
Arts on Grand in Spencer and the
Spencer Community Theatre — will
present Masters of Soul 7:30 p.m.
Friday, April 7, at the Spencer Community
Theatre.
The event begins at 6:30 p.m. with a
social hour and complimentary hors
d’oeuvres and beverages.
Masters of Soul features a cast of 10
— three male vocalists, three female
vocalists and a four-piece band — performing
favorite Motown hits of the
early 1960s and ’70s.
“I think our ticket sales would
indicate that this is a pretty popular
item,” said Rolf Mosbo, vice president
of the Arts on Grand board of
directors. “There’s an awful lot of
throwback-type shows, which we have
at the Clay County Fair every year,
but I don’t know if anyone has done
a Motown-type of review, and these
people specialize in it. They’ve been
wonderfully reviewed. Everybody says
they’re really easy to work with, so
that’s always a plus.”
Masters of Soul has performed to
numerous sold-out audiences for
decades, garnering rave reviews across
the country at venues ranging from
community theatres and universities
to performing arts venues and concert
halls.
The group’s stylishly costumed, fully
choreographed tributes pay homage
to such iconic artists as the Temptations,
Gladys Knight and the Pips,
Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrell, Smokey
Robinson and the Miracles, Four
Tops, Diana Ross & the Supremes, the
Jackson Five, Stevie Wonder and the
Commodores, among others.
The hit list includes some of the
biggest songs of Motown’s heyday,
including “Get Ready,” “My Girl,”
“Ain’t Too Proud To Beg,” “You Can’t
Hurry Love,” “Reach Out,” “Respect,”
“Proud Mary” and “Midnight Train to
Georgia.”
“People may have to be of a certain
age to recognize every song,
and I’m sure that I will
fit that category, but I
think that the music
from the ’60s has stayed
in the forefront,” Mosbo
said. “All of the kids
seem to know a lot of
the old songs, and I
think that’s pretty neat
that people from different
generations can
enjoy the same music.”

Third annual garage tour covers several communities
Three years ago, the car clubs
of Sioux Center and Sheldon
united efforts behind hosting a
garage tour spanning several N’West
Iowa communities. Three years, later
they’re still at it.
The Sioux Center Classic Cruisers
Car Club and the Sheldon Moonlite
Crewzers have organized their third
annual garage tour for Saturday, April
8. It will span stops in Sioux Center,
rural Carmel, Rock Valley, Doon, Matlock,
Sheldon, and Sanborn.
“Our two clubs work well together,
and we have a wide variety for people
to enjoy. There are some very interesting
collections, and many of the tour
stops are new this year,” said Mark
Kinrade of the Classic Cruisers Car
Club.
The tour begins in Sioux Center,
where people will register and pick
up a route map beginning at 8 a.m. at
Centre Mall.
There will be 13 total stops on this
year’s tour; six on the Classic Cruisers
leg then seven on the Moonlite Crewzers
portion. Tour-goers are advised
that one stop near Carmel will require
a couple miles driving on gravel.
“It’s quite a variety to see,” Kinrade
said. “You can go from a cool garage
and restored car at someone’s home
to a shop doing ground-up restoration
with a car in pieces where you
can see the work in progress.”
There will be two featured stops
this year that will cost $10 apiece for
entry with the proceeds going to charity.
Those visiting the featured stop
in Sioux Center must purchase their
ticket when picking up the route map
at Centre Mall. At the featured stop in
Sanborn, visitors can pay at the door.
“These are both huge, unbelievable
connections. They’re definitely worth
seeing,” Kinrade said.
The number of people who registered
for the tour doubled from year
one to year two, and Kinrade hopes to
see continued growth. Great weather
the first two years certainly helped, so
he hopes that trend continues as well.
“If you enjoy cars, this is a fun time
of year,” Kinrade said. “If the weather
is nice, a lot of people will get out
their own unique cars and enjoy a
great day.”

Originally from Virginia, she
has combined southern charm
with big city street smarts to create
a show that won her multiple appearances
on CBS’ “Star Search”
and a promo spot on NBC’s “Last
Comic Standing 4.” She has been
honored with a nomination in
“Campus Activities Magazine” as
Best Female Performer. Sonya has
appeared on Oxygen’s “Girls Behaving
Badly.” She has also been
featured on “Comcast Comedy
Spotlight Roadtrip 2002” and at
The U.S. Comedy Arts Festival
1999, which was aired on HBO, E!
and Comedy Central.
White’s observational comedy
is enhanced by dead-on impersonations
and appropriate sound
effects. Both her comedy stage
show and her one-woman show,
“Airing Dirty Laundry,” are based
on real-life experiences and her
fond, but irreverent, interactions
with friends, family and the world
at large. White’s television credits
include roles on the Fox Network’s
“Nightshift,” The Family Channel’s
sitcom “Big Brother Jake”
and MTV’s national promotion for
“Spring Break ’98.” She has played

The goal was to bring some laughs
to lighten up the doldrums of
winter in northwest Iowa. So
started the first-ever Hillcrest Golf &
Country Club Comedy Tour back in
December.
It continues this month with Mike
Marvell taking the mic Friday, April
7, in Graettinger. Tickets cost $7 in
advance and $10 at the door. Space is
limited to about 80 seats, and those
interested in attending should call
and reserve a spot or visit the clubhouse
to pick up tickets.

said. “The first show was awesome
and really helped sell the rest of it,
and people are still talking about the
last one we had.”
Bonner said they kicked around
the idea of hosting comedy shows
last year and eventually hooked up
with Grassroots Comedy Tour, which
brings a series of comedians to venues
all around the Midwest.
“They’re all pros and have been on
‘The Bob and Tom Show’ and other
shows,” Bonner said. “Our vision was
to try a different avenue of entertainment
and bring that to small-town Iowa,
especially during the winter when
everyone kind of has cabin fever.”
That vision has come to fruition
with each show selling out during the
cold winter months and drawing visitors
to Graettinger from surrounding
communities. As the season changes
to spring, Bonner expects the shows to
continue in their popularity.
Up next is Milwaukee comedian
Mike Marvell, who, according to his
website, “puts on thousands of miles
a year, traveling across the country,
telling jokes and stories about his
family and life in Wisconsin. Married
for over 20 years with three kids, his
comedy offers material that everyone
will definitely relate to. When Mike
hits the stage, it’s like you’ve known
him forever. He’s the guy next door,
that crazy cousin, or your brother-inlaw
(the one you like).”
The show is scheduled for 9 p.m.
with doors opening at 8 p.m., though
Bonner says people can definitely
come earlier than that if they want to
enjoy food and beverages beforehand.
The clubhouse features a full restaurant
and menu with what Bonner says
is “a little bit of everything.”
“It’s geared toward adults, and everyone
has a great time. You should
come ready to laugh, that’s for sure,”
Bonner said.
The success of the first comedy
tour has already got Bonner thinking
about another one next winter and
possibly even one big comedy event
in the summer.

Artist’s Showcase
Over 130 works of art were submitted for the sixth juried exhibition,
The Artist’s Showcase: Orange City Arts’ Regional Exhibition, and
jurors narrowed the selection down to about 30 absolutely top-notch
entries. The exhibit will be March 31-April 8 at the Northwestern College
DeWitt Theatre Arts Center.
The exhibit exclusively features artists who are either from Iowa or live
within a 350-mile radius of Orange City and is held in conjunction with
the Northwestern College production of “Dancing at Lughnasa.”
Best of show and honorable mention awards will be given, with
$100 and $40 cash prizes. Artists accepted for exhibit will receive
complimentary tickets to the theatre production.
