PANEL The appeal of apprentices How important are apprentices in tackling the skills shortage in the UK security/fire installation sector? The PSI Panel reveals what can be done to make the industry more appealing to the next generation of engineers... Last monthsaw the official launch of the Fire, Emergency and Security Systems Trailblazer scheme which gives a dedicated structure to the training of the next generation of installers. Therefore this was the perfect time to discuss the importance of getting people into the industry and how employers can help ensure the future of the the security/fire sector. Simon Banks - CSL Apprentices are vital to tackling the skills shortage in the Fire and Security installation sector. Employers should now feel encouraged to home-grow their own robust talent pipeline to drive their businesses forward in line with new technology. With the official launch of the Fire, Emergency and Security Systems Trailblazer standard the sector has never looked more appealing to apprentices wanting to follow an electrotechnical vocation. The Trailblazer has been developed by the sector, for the sector providing structured training for the next generation of Installers. This positions our industry in the very forefront of innovation, making it the de facto choice for advancement into the Internet of Things (IoT), home automation and AV. Employers should start recruiting to avoid getting left behind. New technology brings with it new challenges, notably the demand for new skills to understand and implement. Each day the price of skills is increasing. The rarer it is, the more expensive it becomes. The new Trailblazer means that the sector will be in a stronger position to attract the thousands of energetic, innovative young people leaving schools and colleges each year. By offering direct learning opportunities alongside professional engineers, the next generation literally learn by doing it. This is the perfect insight and learning experience any young apprentice needs to join the industry and be successful. By utilising apprenticeships, the next generation of engineer will already know what to do when unforeseen circumstances appear during installations, or maintenance calls and how to best overcome such issues. It is certain that apprenticeship programmes are very important going forward, but installation companies could also fit more wireless systems in their commercial installs in the interim. When we look at apprenticeships, they are a long-term investment that will bear fruit in the future, but commercial wireless is available now and could make up for the skills shortage and the lack of engineers immediately. If fitting a wired system, the engineer is sent to site to subsequently run cables, lift floorboards and move furniture. Instead of this, installation companies can work smarter by utilising products that can drive their efficiencies going forward.
