PLANTING GREAT IDEAS FOR SPRING
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Now that the winter snows are past, spring will be bursting upon
the scene at Nordia House just like the beautiful foliage around
us! We hope that you are planning now to join us for all the great
activities and events coming up as we celebrate all things Nordic!
As we begin our second full year in our new cultural center, we
are excited about the growing acclaim—both from the Nordic
community and from the public at large. In the next few months
alone, we will host wonderful exhibits from Finland and Norway,
have a visit from the Deputy Head of Delegation from the EU, be
included in Portland Design Week, and welcome back Chamber
Music Northwest, Classical Up-Close and the Scandinavian
Chorus!
In addition to films and workshops, kantele player Ida Elina will
perform in April, and one of Portland’s favorites—the Harald
Haugaard Band from Denmark—will return in June. The summer
will feature the 89 TH Annual Portland Midsummer Festival, the
return of our Summer Wine Tasting Wednesdays, a special aquavit
tasting, and so much more.
Make sure to watch our website for all of the latest news. If you
are not yet a member of NNW, now is a great time to take full
advantage of all of the benefits of membership and get first
notice about upcoming events, all while helping to bring great
programming here to Nordia House. Please continue to share with
your friends and neighbors all of the things that are happening in
the region’s Nordic community. You are our best ambassadors!
See you at Nordia House!
DESIGN WEEK
AT NORDIA HOUSE
On March 15, Nordic Northwest welcomes two
simultaneous exhibits. The first is MY PARADISE:
A Hundred Years of Finnish Architects’ Summer
Homes, a photographic exhibit of summer
villas (mökki) built by renowned Finnish
architects. The summer house holds a special
place in the Finnish culture as a place of quiet
retreat to nature. It is a place where architects
crystallize aesthetic themes. Indeed, summer
houses are very personal, like diary entries.
The seeds of these ideas and memories are
paralleled in this exhibition. The exhibition is
curated and designed by photographer Jari
Jetsonen and architect Sirkkaliisa Jetsonen.
The exhibit is organized in collaboration with
the Museum of Finnish Architecture, the Alvar
Aalto Museum, and The National Council for
Architecture.
The second exhibit, Saari/Island, is a collection of
paintings and photographs by Finnish artist Inka
Juslin. This exhibit explores childhood experiences
in Finland, where nature was all-encompassing. It
is a personal space, but it carries thoughts about
water and forest echoing the oppositional concepts
of energy, conservation, and degradation. The
symbolic landscapes depicted draw on the themes
from the Finnish Kalevala and Viking-era motifs.
The opening reception for both MY PARADISE and Saari/
Island will be on March 16 from 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM.
Jari Jetsonen, Sirkkaliisa Jetsonen, and Inka Juslin will
all be in attendance. There will also be an open house
for the exhibits on April 26 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM as part
of Design Week Portland. The exhibits will be on display
through mid-June.
MY PARADISE: A Hundred Years of Finnish Architects’
Summer Homes is generously sponsored by Andersen
Construction (builders of Nordia House) and ePrint
Services, with additional support from Diloreto
Architecture (designers of Nordia House). •
WEDDINGS
AT NORDIA HOUSE
If you know of any relatives, friends or loved ones
who are planning on tying the knot in 2017 or
2018, please let them know that Nordia House
still has some prime dates available for both
ceremonies and receptions! Nordia House is the
perfect wooded retreat for weddings large and
small. For more information about using Nordia
House for a wedding (anniversary, private party,
business meeting or holiday gathering), visit our
website at www.scanheritage.org/rentals or
A ROSÉ BY ANY
OTHER NAME
LEAH JØRGENSEN CELLARS DEDICATES NEW
WINE TO LUCIA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
AND WOMEN'S EDUCATION
Leah Jørgensen has always been intrigued by her
Norwegian and Danish roots. She is also deeply
committed to women’s education. So it was
only natural for her to combine these passions
in support of NNW's Lucia of Oregon Program,
and she is now dedicating a portion of every
sale of her new Rosé of Cabernet Franc to Lucia
scholarships! This new wine will be introduced
and available for tasting and purchase on March
8—on International Women’s Day—from 6:00 to
8:00 PM at Nordia House! Leah's new wine, as well
as three of her other locally produced wines, all
paired with light hors d’oeuvres, will be served at
this special benefit event. A program about the
history and future of our Lucia celebration will
accompany. Tickets are $20 each with all ticket
proceeds going toward scholarships. We thank
Leah for her commitment to women’s education
and our Lucia scholarship program. •
Her style developed after seeing virtuoso
slap guitar performers; she is now considered
the first ever “popkantele” player. For more
information and tickets, visit www.scanheritage.
org or call 503.977.0275. This event is cosponsored
we are excited to formally announce our winners!
Congratulations to Emma Hunter, the newly
NNW MEMBER NEWS
PAVER CAMPAIGN
IT'S A GREAT TIME TO SHARE YOUR LEGACY
It’s a new and exciting year at NNW. Have you considered
making you and your family a permanent part of the wonderful
legacy we are building together?
Our Legacy Paver Program offers those interested the chance
to permanently celebrate their Nordic heritage and family
roots. The 2’ x 2’ pavers on our Great Hall Patio, Café Patio and
the Lingonberry Patio (outside the MLC Room) offer up to four
lines for engraved dedications recognizing your ancestors, your
family, special verses or sayings that are meaningful to you, or
even a family crest or business logo.
Legacy Pavers are available for a tax-deductible donation of
$1,000, with these donations going directly to the upkeep and
improvement of our Nordia House campus. Will you become
part of our Legacy... and make us part of your own?
With the start of 2017, we are offering a special option for those
who want to add a paver—make your donation in either four
quarterly payments of $250 each; or 12 monthly payments of
$83.33 each. For more information about the Legacy Paver
Program and payment options, pick up one of the brochures
in our lobby, call 503.977.0275 and ask for one to be mailed to
you, or visit our website at www.scanheritage.org/donate. •
We were pleased to join with
long-time supporter Johanna
Fedde in celebration of her
98 TH birthday on February 5.
Thank you for all the years of
dedicated service to the Nordic
community in Portland.
Best wishes for a speedy return
to health to both Anna Lundin
and Larry West. Our thoughts
are with you!
Our sincere condolences to:
Carol and Anne-Marie Lindstedt,
loving wife and daughter of
long-time supporter Robert
Lindstedt. Though he passed
away in December, he will be
dearly remembered.
Bo, Lars, Per and the whole
family of Grete Kasch of
Scappoose. Born in Helsingor,
Denmark, she was an active
part of the Danish community
here for many years.
And, as we go to print, we
learned of the sad news of the
passing of NNW supporter and
Norske Rundanssere folk dancer
Paul Herner. Always a delight
to see at events here at Nordia
House, he will be deeply missed.
resident of Lake Oswego,
NNW member, and part of
the Messiah Lutheran Church,
also recently passed away in
Finland. •
HARALD HAUGAARD
ACCLAIMED BAND RETURNS TO NORDIA HOUSE
FOR 2 ND ANNIVERSARY WEEKEND CELEBRATION
NNW is pleased to welcome back to Nordia House acclaimed Danish
folk and classical musical artist Harald Haugaard as part of our 2 ND
Anniversary celebration. The Harald Haugaard Band will perform on
Thursday, June 22 at 7:30 PM with plans currently aimed at Nordia
House’s first summer outdoor concert on our adjoining meadow!
Tickets are $20 for members, $25 for non-members, and will soon be
available for sale on our website.
Harald Haugaard performs as many as 100 concerts or more a year. His constant touring,
numerous recordings and strong commitment to teaching attracts an enthusiastic, ever-growing
following. His virtuoso playing ranges from the effortless to the ferociously challenging, always
with a characteristically rich and melancholy tone. His compositions are original, and his artistic
expression draws always on his deep roots in the rich Danish musical tradition.
Haugaard has appeared frequently on television and radio, and has composed and produced music for
theatre, films and concerts, including the opening concert of Womex 2009 "The Great Nordic Night."
Among his many awards and honors are the Eiserner Eversteiner European Folk Music Award, the
Danish Musicians' Union Prize of Honour and the Odense Live Prize, to name only a few. His total of 12
Danish Music Awards make him one of the most frequent winners of that award ever—in any genre.
He has been Artist-in-Residence at one of Canada's most esteemed music festivals, Celtic Colours, and in 2015 he was
an official Carl Nielsen Artist with the Odense Symphony Orchestra; he has also worked with the folkBALTICA festival
for three years as Artistic Director. The music magazine The Strad has described him as a "charismatic virtuoso" and the
British music magazine ROOTS has said: "Haugaard is a brilliant fiddler, one of the very best in the world." •
