Invitation to a unique academic experience

Dear Students,
It is my pleasure to welcome you to IDC Herzliya. Many of you
have arrived from overseas to study in Israel. Moving to a new
country and facing the challenges of a new environment and
culture is exciting but not an easy task. We at IDC Herzliya will
do our best to provide you with an excellent education which
will enhance your future career development, while at the same
time providing a friendly and supportive social environment.
of activity. We are known as an avangard academic institution
which considers the students as active partners in the daily life
of the campus. The following pages describe the various extracurricular
activities and special programs which take place at IDC
Herzliya.
I recommend you take part in these activities, whether as a
communal volunteer, playing on a sports team, attending Hillel
activities, representing IDC's Herzliya debating team in international
competition, simulating being a business person or diplomat at
our entrepreneurial or ambassadors clubs, singing in the choir,
of even hiking with me in the President's Hiking Club and discovering
the land of Israel by foot. Participation in these and other activities
will help you develop friendships and comraderie and help you
enjoy your IDC experience to the fullest.
I wish you the best of success in your studies and wonderful and
Campus Life
As an educational institution which emphasizes the values of freedom of action, community
responsibility, initiative and excellence, IDC Herzliya encourages its students to engage in wide
range of activities, in addition to academic studies. IDC Herzliya offers a variety of community
projects which are based on the belief that meaningful interactions with ones neighbors and
peers during studies contributes to internalizing and adopting values of community involvement
in the future. In addition, as is customary in leading universities in the world, and out of our
concern for the individual student, IDC Herzliya offers a variety of social activities which
contribute to the enrichment of student life.
¥

Community
Projects
The Legal Aid and Community
Involvement Program* Law students
providing legal aid to needy segments of
society in community centers located in
Herzliya neighborhoods, and participating
in lawmaking initiatives, under guidance
and supervision of an attorney. The program
is designed to expose students to theoretical
as well as practical issues related to the
legal profession in benefiting both community
and society.
Students Serving the Community*
The project includes four programs related
to social involvement:
Helping to teach basic learning skills and
initiating various enrichment activities for
kindergarten children in Herzliya from low
socio-economic backgrounds, aiding their
successful integration into the first grade;
Mentoring junior high and high school
students in Herzliya from low socio-economic
backgrounds who have difficulty realizing
their scholastic potential, to prepare them
for matriculation exams and integrate them
into the academic system; Initiating, planning
and implementing activities for children,
teenagers and the elderly in community
centers throughout the country; Tutoring
new drivers and their families to reduce
the number of accidents on Israel's roads.
µ

Community
Projects
Law Students Serving the Community
Volunteer activities combined with theoretical
studies and discussions about the role of
the attorney and the individual in society.
The program includes student activities in
court and provision of assistance to people
who have no legal representation. Volunteers
also teach legal concepts to 8th grade
students of low socio-economic background
at the “Neve-Hadassah” youth village.
The project is under the guidance of a
District Court Judge.
“Mashua” - Public Trial on the
Holocaust This unique program combines
volunteer activities of law students at the
“Neve Hadassah" youth village, the Institute
for Holocaust Studies and Commemoration
of Holocaust Victims. The Program is
designed to create a framework in which
law students will be able to participate in
the preparation of a mock trial dealing
with legal issues pertaining to the Holocaust
and its ramifications on the present. Volunteers
will organize groups of students from “Neve
Hadassah” for purposes of the mock trial,
to take place at IDC Herzliya. Law students,
as along with students from “Neve Hadassah”
and leading lawyers from the private sector,
will argue before a panel of judges.
Hand in Hand - A Different National
Academic Institution - Students
Tutoring Pupils Students tutor pupils from
troubled neighborhoods in Herzliya, helping
them succeed in their schoolwork and
improve their chances of earning a high
school diploma.
community
“Halev Bamishpat” This project introduces law students to people who’s legal rights
have been abused and cannot afford legal representation from a qualified attorney. The
project acts in the framework of the Movement for the Fight against Poverty in Israel.
“Kav Hatohar”* In the framework of Kav Hatohar, which is affiliated with the public
inquiries of the Movement for Quality Government in Israel, second and third year law
students handle citizens’ inquiries concerning corruption and other improprieties at various
government levels. Students examine the inquiry and decide on the appropriate steps,
such as addressing the entities involved, filing actions with various judicial stations or
even filing a petition with the Israeli Supreme Court.
This field work takes place under guidance of a mentoring attorney and constitutes a
practical application of material studied in the classroom. These activities take place within
the framework of an elective course, which combines lectures and workshops dealing
with the issues arising from actual international cases.
The "Ensemble" Project - Students for Music Education A unique project, providing
free musical education for gifted children who were unable to receive tutoring within other
frameworks. Weekly classes are taught to individual students or to a group of IDC Herzliya
students with prior musical education.
“College for All”* The “College for All” is a non profit organization committed to
empowering pupils from second grade up, who show a potential for excellence and live
in problematic neighborhoods. The organization operates a rich and varied program
which accompanies pupils up to high school graduation and preparation for higher
education.
“Junior High School in Academia” Tutors of 8th grade junior high school students
from underprivileged neighborhoods in Herzliya arrive at the IDC Herzliya campus for
by IDC herzliya, in conjunction with “Young Entrepreneurs,” an organization for the
education of high school students for business entrepreneurship. Participation in this program
is an excellent precursor for students interested in the Zell Entrepreneurship Program.
Foreign Language Courses* IDC Herzliya
offers foreign language courses to all of its
students at the various departments within
the framework of general elective courses
including: Italian, German, Spanish, Arabic,
French and Chinese. The purpose of the
The Berman-Lippa Family Foundation
Debate Club 85% of the members of the
British Parliament are alumni of or members
of debating societies. Renowned orators
and statesmen, such as Henry Kissinger,
Abba Eban, and Benjamin Netanyahu,
world, IDC Herzliya sponsors an award
winning debating society, which provides
students with an opportunity to acquire
and improve their debating and rhetorical
skills. Debating is a challenging intellectual
sport which focuses on competition between
rivaling groups which aim to convince the
public to support or to oppose a certain
proposition. IDC Herzliya Debate Club
was the only debating society which reached
the semi- finals at the world championship
in the year 2006 in the category “English
as a second language”.
