Lisa
Lisa Lisa - the internationally famous top female artist of the freestyle genre
and front woman of the Cult Jam - will be appearing at Joe’s Pub on April 8
at 9:30 p.m. as part of the Downtown Urban Arts Festival.
Born Lisa Velez in New York City as the youngest of 10 children, Lisa Lisa
began to sing in nightclubs at age 13, sneaking out to do so of course. With
a voice like an angel, she rose to stardom with the rap group Full Force.
She was the first Latin artist to make it big nationwide singing in the English
language and is considered a pioneer in the music industry in both urban
freestyle and R&B.
Lisa Lisa is also an accomplished songwriter and actress who has starred on
and off Broadway in shows such as Westside Story. She has also made many
television appearances, including a guest spot on “Law & Order.”
Lisa Lisa will be part of the Downtown Urban Arts Festival, which covers
theater, film, music and poetry, in New York City. The festival “embraces diversity,
and LGBTQ artists represent about a third of the works they present
each year.” The festival, which is now celebrating its 15 year, will be held
from April 8 to May 20, and will open with Lisa Lisa at Joe’s Pub.
Lisa Lisa promises to bring it all back. Her best known songs include “All
Cried Out,” “Lost in Emotion,” “Let the Beat Hit ‘Em,” “Head to Toe,” “I
Wonder If I Take You Home” and “Little Jackie.”
You are about to perform at the world
famous Joe’s Pub. Have you ever
performed there before?
No, this will be my first time performing
there, but I’ve seen all of my favorites
perform there.
It’s a very cool, intimate venue.
I’m keeping my fingers crossed that
everything works out fine. I’m excited
and nervous at the same time.
You will be amazing for sure! You’re
doing this show for the Downtown
Urban Arts Festival?
Yeah, we are. I was asked to do it, and of
course I’m going to do it. I need to get in
there again and feed into my people.
Well, you’re definitely a household
name, still.
Let’s keep it that way.
For someone like you, who was and
is so huge, do you think that if you
started your career today, with all the
free streaming and downloads and the
way the music industry has changed, do
you think you would have been as epic?
I don’t know. Probably not. I know it
would be different, because visually we’d
be able to get our
stuff out there.
But I think the
fact that record
labels back then
were 100% into
giving artist
development—
they were all
about that. They
paid for videos,
they took care of
everything. They
got us out there.
The publicist
already came
with the package.
Everything was
done. In one
building, we
got everything
done. Today, that
doesn’t even
exist. You’ve got
to come fully
packaged or
nothing at all.
And it’s usually
nothing at all. There were so many new
artists out there, and they can’t seem
to stay relevant for 30 seconds. How is
it that your music still stays relevant?
Aww, thank you. I appreciate that. There
are so many newcomers, it’s unbelievable.
Everybody sounds the same. I personally
believe that it has to do with the fact
that there is no originality really in music.
What happened to the time of the live
band, recreating it on stage? If you want
to see something in our days… Going to
a concert is not the same. You just watch
a video, and there it is. At home you can
see it; why would I go to a concert to see
it? I think it was the style of music and the
time. When we came out it was all about
freestyle. Freestyle to me was the music
that we played in clubs. People still go
to clubs today! Whatever was playing in
the clubs was what people depended on.
Today clubs are so different. Everything
has to do with a video.
And the DJ is the star.
Nothing is live. We played it with records.
We played it with albums. Everything was
plastic, vinyl, on the record player, with
the DJ. Now, it’s done with a computer.
They throw video screens up, and that’s
how they do it. Everybody wants to be
their own star. I’m gonna do what I do.
It’s sad that I
never hear any
more original
freestyle.
No, there’s not. It’s
either a remake or
retake. They take
a track, or they’ll
do the same song
over—oh my
God, everything
is so redundant.
It’s not original. It
was so different
[then]. Everybody
focused on
the music back
then. Nothing
was visual. That
didn’t start to
happen until MTV
came out. Once
MTV started,
everything had
to be visual. You
had to put a video
up. They thought
that’s where it was
going to continue on. Anybody could be
going up on the TV.
Everyone has a YouTube channel of
their own. Historically, if you could look
back and be remembered for just one
thing, what would you want it to be?
My vocals. I would want to be known
for my singing, because that’s what I
do. Second, my music. That’s what I’m
thinking about. That’s what I want to be
on the stage for.
I live to sing. I love it, and I thank God
that I’m able to. Let me put it this way:
I live to sing, and I sing to live. I’m
able to pay my bills doing what I do
best.
They have all of these freestyle
revivals, and they are amazing;
however, a lot of times they just
pick up anyone without a name and
put them on stage. Why is that?
Everybody thinks they can make a
dollar, so they’ll just pick up anybody:
Any Tom, Dick and Harry or Jane in
the neighborhood, and they think that
they could create an artist, a song, a
classic. No, you’re not going to do
that. You have to do what you say you
do. You’ve got to get up, you’ve got
to have a voice, you’ve got to know
what you’re doing with the music.
You’ve got to be able to recreate that
shit live on stage. People want to
hear you do it. Once you get up on
the stage, number one, audiences do
not like lip syncing. It’s obvious. The
media tells you that every day. If you
can’t do it, then don’t fake it. I put
on a show that someone is going to
remember. A show with substance.
That has meaning. Catchy. Something
that you can relate to. I think that’s
why I’m able to continue doing what
I do.
I would think that. I can name most
of your songs, but I can’t name
songs from many of the newer
artists.
The songs are all the same out there
today. Everything sounds the same.
Let me tell you, I haven’t listened
to radio - and forgive me, because
I appreciate radio for still playing
me - but I haven’t listened to radio
continuously for so many years,
because there’s nothing there that’s
catching my ear. Thank God for
satellite radio, because I’m able to hit
all of the stations that are playing the
classics, the oldies.
So what can your audience expect
at Joe’s Pub?
You’re going to feel like you’re back
there in the ‘80s. We’re going to take
you back. It’s going to be nostalgic for
you, and it’s gonna be live! So come
out and have a damn good time!
CELEBRITY CORRESPONDENT
Sasha Velour is
abundantly beautiful and daringly
creative. Living in Brooklyn,
Sasha Velour—whose real name
is Sasha, even as a boy—is one
of the selected drag queens
slated to compete on season 9 of
“RuPaul’s Drag Race.”
She is highly impressive and has
a lot of positive things to say.
So how excited are you to be a contestant
on season 9?
I’m so, so, so excited! It’s a wonderful
opportunity.
Where were you and what were you
doing when you received “the call” telling
you that you were to be on “Drag Race”?
I actually had been visiting my father in
Russia, and I was in the airport coming
back through immigration. I was at the
officer’s counter. I had saved the number
in my phone, so I knew exactly what it was,
and I was hoping that it was a yes call. It
was amazing, and I will never forget that
moment. Later on, when I called them back,
I was crouched by the baggage carousel in
the middle of the night.
Are you from Russia?
My grandmother is from Russia. My dad is
a Russian historian by trade, so we’ve gone
back and forth to Russia almost every year
since I was a little kid. So I’m half Russian,
and also I’ve studied a lot about Russia. I
studied the Russian language in school.
Do you have any dramatic drag stories to
tell? The first time you ever did drag will
work.
The first time I ever did drag I was a little kid.
My parents were really always encouraging
me to dress up however I wanted. I
always chose to dress up as witches and
evil queens. My favorite game was Lady
Macbeth. I watched a movie of Macbeth
late at night by mistake when I was six or
seven, and then became obsessed with Lady
Macbeth, how she tortures herself and then
throws herself off the fortress into the mist. I
would love to reenact that. My parents could
not stop me from reenacting Lady Macbeth.
I’d wear a flowing dress, and I’d run upstairs.
I would take the dress and open my window
and throw the dress out the window. I don’t
know how dramatic that is, but I don’t have
any bad memories of being in drag. Every
memory I have of drag is a positive one,
even when things have gone disastrously.
I think that’s all part of the experience, an
optimistic outlook.
How long have you been doing drag
professionally?
About five years. I didn’t start until after I
had finished college. I decided I didn’t want
to be a part of academia; that’s the course
that I had been following for a long time. It
was a very weird, transitional part of my life.
In the same year my mom was diagnosed
with cancer. I decided to check in with
myself about who I am and what I wanted
to be doing with my time, and I returned
to drag, which I remember loving as a little
kid. I kind of never finished putting on
dresses I think. I started doing it again, more
glamorously, on a larger scale.
Do you have a drag mother?
No, I just have a lot of drag brothers and
sisters. They were drag kings and queens
who have grown up alongside me, and we
sort of pushed each other. I like that better.
No one has ever really handed down any
rules of how to do drag. It’s always been
discovered through trial and error.
That’s a very creative way to do drag. If
you had to give advice to any of these
new baby drag queens who might be
just starting out, what would you say to
them?
Try everything, even if you only end up
trying it once. Find a way of expressing
your fashion and performance that feels the
truest to you. I wasted time, although it’s
part of the journey, trying to look like other
people. It wasn’t until I lost the fear of being
really, really different, and that’s when I
became a ball queen, and when I started
painting my eyebrows crazy and putting in
monster teeth and monster ears. I think that
there is so much power in being weird and
different.
When was the last time you did
something for the first time?
Every day! Just today for the photo shoot I
only painted half my face and tried this mask
that I’ve never tried before. I always love
trying new things, even though it’s terrifying.
Do you have a favorite song that you like
to perform?
Yeah. My favorite song to perform is Kate
Bush’s song, “Wuthering Heights.” Her
voice and her emotions are so beautiful.
Either that or any song by Shirley Bassey.
She is definitely my favorite singer. She’s so
dramatic and over the top.
Who in the drag world inspires you?
I really love learning about drag history and
figures from the New York scene, like Leigh
Bowery. Drag is not just a serious art, but
also queer and political. Also, I love reading
about drag queens in the ‘50s and earlier,
when it was really challenging to express
gender in that way. If people could do drag
then, and do it so beautifully and creatively,
that’s amazing to me. That gives me hope.
What does it mean to you to be on “Drag
Race”?
It’s an enormous honor. It makes me feel
better about myself, because it’s the
greatest honor you can have as a drag
queen in this country. At the same time I also
feel like it’s a responsibility, because I know
that I am the first queen from my community,
Brooklyn, from this sort of different gender,
queer, burlesque, drag hybrid to get on
the show. I feel like it is a responsibility to
represent my friends and that crowd.
If you could say anything to your fans and
followers, what would it be?
That I love them and need them, and just
as they are rooting for me, I’m rooting for
them.
What will you do if you win?
I’m going to just keep producing drag, and
I’m going to take the drag community, then
I’m on the road. I want to start a dialogue
between our community and small drag
communities throughout the country. I
visualize it like a traveling drag circus that
goes to towns and interacts with the local
talent. We can both learn things.
You are an amazing queen. Is there
anything that you would like to promote
for yourself?
Yes, actually. I am a director of a drag
magazine. It’s all about drag, and I’ve been
putting together the third issue, which will
be out in April. It’s called “Velour: The Drag
Magazine.” I named it after myself!

CELEBRITY CORRESPONDENT
Season 9 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race”
has assembled some of New
York’s most glamorous, creatively
talented, sparkling queens that
nightlife has to offer. Alexis
Michelle has for years hoped to
be one of RuPaul’s selected, and
finally her vision has turned into
reality.
A theatrical queen,
Alexis Michelle is a
true performer. She attended
the University of Michigan in
musical theatre and has an acting
background. Her drag career
began with a weekly show with
Schwa de Vivre, but became
impressive after winning “So You
Think You Can Drag,” season 5.
From there she soon became one
of New York’s most requested
queens.
Alexis, what was your exact feeling when
you received the call that you were chosen
to compete in this season’s “Drag Race”?
It was like it was real, and it was like it wasn’t
real. It was amazing, but I also have been
waiting for this moment for many years.
Yes, I know.
I couldn’t have this big, cathartic, celebratory
moment, because I was almost 100% painted
for a Friday night show. It was 10 o’clock
when I got the call on the East Coast. I kind
of had to just put it on the shelf. It was my
little secret for the night. My little, fun secret.
Later that night, after the gig, no clothes
on, just my makeup, and I was laying on
the sofa. I looked at Instagram, and I came
across a picture of a bunch of my favorite
“RuPaul” girls doing a meet and greet for
an event that they had. I had this moment,
and I gasped! Oh my God, my sisters. I even
whispered it to myself. It was so exciting. It’s
always meant so much to me to be a part of
this sisterhood, and so that was the moment,
many hours later, that I had that moment.
I’m in the club!
You have been wanting to do this for some
time now. What does being on “RuPaul’s
Drag Race” mean to you?
It means everything to me. It means a lot to
me to be able to represent a lot of queens
who like to do the kind of thing I do. It means
a lot to me to be on for my own expression,
to be able to get to express what I want to
express for such a big and wide-reaching
platform. I don’t take it lightly. I feel that
there is a responsibility that comes with
that, to be there for the people who support
the show. That’s what makes “Drag Race”
so incredible. Not only the tremendous
personalities and talents on the program,
but also the incredible people that support
the program. It has an amazing following, so
there is a responsibility that we have to really
be there for the people that love that show.
What would you want to say to the fans
and followers of the show and to your own
fan club?
I would say never give up on something that
means a lot to you. Whether that means
pursuing a dream or standing up and
speaking out for what you think is right, never
give up. My little journey that I have been on
is a testament to the fact that it’s worth it. It’s
worth sticking it out. It’s worth speaking out.
Just like Hillary Clinton said, speak up for
what you believe in, and it will be worth it.
Is there anything that you’d like to
promote for yourself?
The last time we talked, I was getting ready
for my first 54 Below debut show. Well, now
I’m doing a headliner run there. Once a
month in March, April, May and June you
can catch me at 54 Below doing my show, “It
Takes a Woman.”
Do we have those dates?
The next one is March 28. It’s a Tuesday at
9:30 p.m.; then Friday, April 7, at 9:30; May 16
on a Tuesday at 9:30; and June 13, a Tuesday,
at 9:30.
We’ve spoken a lot in the past about
drag, but tell me once again, how did
you begin? What was the moment that
changed your life?
The first time that I did drag was Halloween.
I think the life-changing moment for me
was about three years ago. It was right
around this time; my life changed a lot. A
relationship ended, my beloved dog died
and I found myself with part survival to
dive in to drag. It was part survival and part
distraction, but it really saved me, because
it’s such a joyous, expressive thing to do.
So diving into drag full time three years ago
was the turning point where I said, “I’ve seen
a lot in life, I have more perspective, and I
just have to keep doing this.” This was part
of my destiny. I always felt that way about
“Drag Race” too, that it was part of my
destiny. So three years ago when I had this
moment, I decided this is the road I’m on,
and I can’t deny it. I have to take that road.
Do you feel that being on “Drag Race” is
a life-changing experience, and if so, how?
Oh, absolutely! It’s life-changing in that all of
a sudden a lot more people know you and
hopefully support you, although you can’t
please everybody. It’s life-changing also in
that I’ll really now have an opportunity to
perform like I’ve never been able to perform.
I’ll be able to be making a living doing this.
Even when I started doing it full time, I was
still working multiple jobs. So I’m looking
forward to this being my career for a while.
What will you be doing if you win?
I will hope that I can, like I said, be the queen
that all the people want, be someone who
is entertaining and funny and glamorous. As
I said before, and I will continue to say, if I
take that crown you can be sure I will use my
voice as best I can to spread the message
of love and inclusion as opposed to people
feeling left out. That’s not what I’m about. If
I am chosen by Mama Ru to wear the crown,
I’m going to keep spreading her a message
of love.
How do you feel that “Drag Race” helps
today’s society cope with everything that
is going on out there?
I think “Drag Race” helps, because “Drag
Race” is an example of truth. I think a lot of
trouble we have in the world comes from
the fact that people are not honest with
themselves or with each other. I think that
when people live their truths, we move
closer to a more authentic society.
What kind of advice would you give to
those wishing to be on “Drag Race,” or
young drag queens starting out?
When it comes to doing drag, my advice
is, just do whatever it is you want to do.
Whatever story you want to tell, tell that
story. You don’t have to worry about trying
Brooklyn born-and-raised,
Aja is animated, beautiful,
talented and truthful. Aja’s name
was inspired by the Bollywood
movie “Disco Dancer,” and
although she has no idea what
it means, she likes the sound
of it. Aja is another one of the
fantastic queens chosen to
compete in season 9 of
“RuPaul’s Drag Race.”
What was your exact feeling when you
found out that you would be on this
season’s “Drag Race”?
I really had no room to react! I was
shopping for contact solution at Walgreens,
and I was on line, and I had to remove
myself from the line, because I was about to
have a panic attack. It was intense.
Did you think that you would be chosen?
I feel like when anybody auditions, they
have that faith in themselves. I had a kind
of attitude toward it, so when I got the final
call, I wasn’t too surprised. It’s like anything
in life. You can know something, but when
you get that actual validating moment, you
just still feel so amazing. I kind of did think I
was going to make it, but at the same time I
never knew what could have happened.
When did you start doing drag?
I started doing drag when I was 17 years
old. I had dropped out of high school to do
drag. I had perfect grades, and my family
was really mad at me for it. I was going
through a lot of anxiety issues and stuff
at home, so I started doing drag as like
a therapy type of thing to get away from
everything. It definitely helped. Look at me
now.
How long have you been doing drag?
I’ve been doing drag for six years.
What is it that you like best about doing
drag?
I like doing drag because it’s kind of like
a portal into the art world, where you can
take little bits and pieces from all these
different types of art and kind of just be
that. You don’t have to just be a hairstylist
or a designer or dancer or a painter. You
can be all of those things at once.
Very true. Do you have a drag mother?
No, I don’t have a drag mother. When I first
came out in drag, nobody really wanted
to claim me. YouTube couldn’t teach me
anything.
So you were just a trial and error girl?
Oh yes, that’s exactly what I tell people. I
just tried what I could, and sometimes it
came out good, but most times it came out
really bad.
What does being a contestant mean to
you?
Being a contestant on “RuPaul’s Drag Race”
for me means that I now have a platform
to showcase my art. Also, I feel like I have
more of a voice than I had before. I feel
like I have the platform to speak up about
my life and share experiences with other
people who may be going through similar
things that I did, and kind of talk people off
of ledges that I didn’t have someone to talk
me off of.
Can you recall the most dramatic
experience in your life that might’ve
changed the path of your life?
I think the most dramatic thing in my life
was starting to do drag. It was just so
different. I just grew up in a place where it
was super, hyper masculine. Gender norms
were heavily enforced. So for me to start
doing drag, I kind of went against what I
grew up believing in. I’m kind of happy I
did it, because now I feel more comfortable
being who I am.
What would you tell your fans and
followers if you could tell them anything
you want?
If I could tell my fans and followers
anything, I’d tell them to follow your
dreams and never give up. I came to so
many end-of-the-road type of situations
where I felt like this is it, I’m done, I can’t go
any farther, but I believed that I could do it,
and I did. Never give up.
Is there anything that you would like to
promote for yourself?
Yes. I just want to promote just to be
yourself. If there’s anything I want people to
know about me, it is that I am myself 24/7.
I feel like there’s nothing wrong with being
yourself no matter who you are. It doesn’t
matter who’s giving you crap for being
yourself. Be yourself!

Peppermint is one of the
most well-liked queens in New
York. She’s popular, sought
after, talented, sexy, beautiful
and fun, and now one of the
chosen few on this season’s
“RuPaul’s Drag Race.” She can
sing as well as lip sync, dance
and be hysterically funny. She
has got the whole package.
If you happen to win, what will you
do, and how will that be a lifechanging
experience?
First of all, $100,000. You would know
if I win, because all of my bills and my
rent would be paid, simultaneously, on
time. That is what I’m excited about.
If I’m lucky, my student loans will be
paid off. That would be the only thing
that would change. That’s how my life
would change immediately. Then I think
in the long term I would hope that it
would give me a little more longevity
with my platform. I really feel like the
time is right now to speak out on so
many issues that I happen to be right
at the intersection of. They are race,
queerness, gender, trans rights, and
so many things that are going on right
now at this very moment that seem to
be crucial. I would like to contribute
to that the best way that I can. That is
something I was committed to doing
even before getting on “Drag Race,”
but now I think my voice might be heard
a little more clearly. I’m excited about
that.
I like that answer. So where were you
and what were you doing and feeling
when you got notified that you would
be a contestant on “Drag Race”?
There’s been a little bit of back and
forth with the different stages of the
audition. So, when I got the call, I was
not expecting it. I was actually on the
phone with one of my girlfriends, and I
got disconnected. So she called back,
and I was expecting to resume the
conversation right where we left off. So
I was like, “What’s up bitch, keep telling
me,” and it was one of the producers. It
was quite awkward, but it was fine. I was
the one who was nervous. I was actually
afraid I offended her and that she would
call me back and say never mind.
I’ve been researching you a lot lately,
and I’ve come to learn that you are
one of the most liked queens on the
scene. Do you think that you’re going
to be as well liked on the show once
the competition begins?
I hope so. I’m imagining that doing
“Drag Race” is a lot like being in any
other group of drag queens. So if you
can handle any group of drag queens,
New York City queens, different
personalities, then I would say that
hopefully you’re primed and ready for
something like “Drag Race.” There
are a few elements of course. It is a
competition, and there is a cash prize
involved, and the public is watching and
even have the opportunity to interact
and give their opinions, like on social
media. That’s a little bit of a different
aspect, a new aspect than the normal
kind of camaraderie that I usually have
with queens. I’m ready for it.
What would you like to promote for
yourself?
I have some new music and some new
music videos. Of course I still have my
weekly New York City shows. And they
can follow me on peppermint247 on my
social media platforms and check out
my new album called “Black Pepper”
and my remix album called “Sugar and
Spice.” I have a new album coming
out this summer, and I’m working on a
special secret project with some of the
girls from the show.

WHAT IS GENVOYA ® ?
GENVOYA is a 1-pill, once-a-day prescription medicine
used to treat HIV-1 in people 12 years and older and
weigh at least 77 lbs. It can either be used in people
who are starting HIV-1 treatment and have never
taken HIV-1 medicines before, or people who are
replacing their current HIV-1 medicines and whose
healthcare provider determines they meet certain
requirements. These include having an undetectable
viral load (less than 50 copies/mL) for 6 months or
more on their current HIV-1 treatment. GENVOYA
combines 4 medicines into 1 pill taken once a day
with food. GENVOYA is a complete HIV-1 treatment
and should not be used with other HIV-1 medicines.
GENVOYA does not cure HIV-1 or AIDS. To control
HIV-1 infection and decrease HIV-related illnesses,
you must keep taking GENVOYA. Ask your healthcare
provider if you have questions about how to reduce
the risk of passing HIV-1 to others. Always practice
safer sex and use condoms to lower the chance of
sexual contact with body fluids. Never reuse or share
needles or other items that have body fluids on them.
IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
What is the most important information I
should know about GENVOYA?
GENVOYA may cause serious side effects:
• Build-up of an acid in your blood (lactic
acidosis), which is a serious medical emergency.
Symptoms of lactic acidosis include feeling very
weak or tired, unusual muscle pain, trouble
breathing, stomach pain with nausea or vomiting,
feeling cold (especially in your arms and legs),
feeling dizzy or lightheaded, and/or a fast or
irregular heartbeat.
• Serious liver problems. The liver may become
large and fatty. Symptoms of liver problems include
your skin or the white part of your eyes turning
yellow (jaundice); dark “tea-colored” urine; lightcolored
bowel movements (stools); loss of appetite;
nausea; and/or pain, aching, or tenderness in the
right side of your stomach area.
• You may be more likely to get lactic acidosis
or serious liver problems if you are female, very
overweight, or have been taking GENVOYA for a long
time. In some cases, lactic acidosis and serious liver
problems have led to death. Call your healthcare
provider right away if you have any symptoms of
these conditions.
• Worsening of hepatitis B (HBV) infection.
GENVOYA is not approved to treat HBV. If you have
both HIV-1 and HBV and stop taking GENVOYA, your
HBV may suddenly get worse. Do not stop taking
GENVOYA without first talking to your healthcare
provider, as they will need to monitor your health.
Who should not take GENVOYA?
Do not take GENVOYA if you take:
• Certain prescription medicines for other
conditions. It is important to ask your healthcare
provider or pharmacist about medicines that should
not be taken with GENVOYA. Do not start a new
medicine without telling your healthcare provider.
• The herbal supplement St. John’s wort.
• Any other medicines to treat HIV-1 infection.
What are the other possible side effects of
GENVOYA?
Serious side effects of GENVOYA may also include:
• Changes in body fat, which can happen in people
taking HIV-1 medicines.
• Changes in your immune system. Your immune
system may get stronger and begin to fight infections.
Tell your healthcare provider if you have any new
symptoms after you start taking GENVOYA.
• Kidney problems, including kidney failure. Your
healthcare provider should do blood and urine tests to
check your kidneys. If you develop new or worse kidney
problems, they may tell you to stop taking GENVOYA.
The most common side effect of GENVOYA is nausea.
Tell your healthcare provider if you have any side effects that
bother you or don’t go away.
Ask your healthcare provider if GENVOYA is right
for you, and visit GENVOYA.com to learn more.
What should I tell my healthcare provider
before taking GENVOYA?
• All your health problems. Be sure to tell your
healthcare provider if you have or have had any
kidney or liver problems, including hepatitis
virus infection.
• All the medicines you take, including
prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins,
and herbal supplements. Other medicines may
affect how GENVOYA works. Keep a list of all your
medicines and show it to your healthcare provider and
pharmacist. Ask your healthcare provider if it is safe to
take GENVOYA with all of your other medicines.
• If you take antacids. Take antacids at least 2 hours
before or after you take GENVOYA.
• If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It
is not known if GENVOYA can harm your unborn baby.
Tell your healthcare provider if you become pregnant
while taking GENVOYA.
• If you are breastfeeding (nursing) or plan to
breastfeed. Do not breastfeed. HIV-1 can be passed
to the baby in breast milk.
You are encouraged to report negative side
effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Visit
www.fda.gov/medwatch, or call
Welcome: REBAR
In the last few
decades Chelsea has
seen many iconic
gay venues close,
including Roxy,
Rawhide, Splash
and most recently G
Lounge. Since then
the trend has been
for all new bars and
nightclubs to open
uptown in Hell’s
Kitchen. But there is
new life coming back
to a familiar place in
Chelsea.
Get Out! magazine
spoke to Michael
McGrail and two
of his partners,
Facundo Rodriguez
and Franco DiLuzio,
about the grand
opening of their
new venture in the
old G Lounge space
on 19th Street, and
what is in store for
the patrons.
Congratulations on the
opening of a brandnew
bar. What is it
going to be called?
MM: REBAR, which is
actually the reinforcing
bar that gives strength to
concrete. We’re looking
to bring back strength to
the community through
a neighborhood bar
experience. Something
new in gay NYC,
informal, comfortable,
relaxed.
FD: REBAR is a place
where you can meet for
drinks, chat with your
friends or meet new
people, or maybe even
set out on your next
adventure.
When are you set to
open?
FR: We hope to open in
early April 2017.
What is your square
footage there?
MM: Thirty-seven
hundred, but it seems
much larger with the
completely redone
space. The only thing
that remains after
the renovation is the
address.
Will there be
entertainment?
FD: Not right now.
We’re bringing the bar
experience back to a
simpler time, a friendly
bar where people can
come and chat without
the distractions. You can
go anywhere and they
have shows, sports (or
porn) on TV and “other
entertainment” that get
in the way of personal
contact. We want it all to
be about people chilling
with their friends, flirting
and possibly meeting Mr.
Right…or Mr. Right Now.
Will you still have the
oval bar?
FR: Everything
associated to G is gone,
including the oval bar.
There are new owners, a
new staff and an entirely
new look and feel. We’ve
completely renovated
the interior, including the
façade. It will be
deconstructed in some
ways…a bar or tavern
kind of feel…comfortable,
like it’s been there forever.
The design is different
with two separate bars
offering a better flow with
a sexy industrial interior
with lots of little “nooks
and crannies,” including a
sexy red room.
So what is the VIP room
going to offer?
MM: There really is not
a VIP room per se. As
Facundo said, we have a
“red room” lounge, but
the true VIP experience
will be through being
invited to participate
in our REBAR Reward
Program. This is a oneof-a-kind
free phone
app that gives patrons
points for every visit,
purchases and more.
They can redeem these
points for drinks when
they hit certain levels of
membership.
FD: The app also allows
us via smart phones
to announce special
promotions, rewards
for birthdays and other
special occasions. This
high-tech feature applied
at our neighborhood bar
is not being done in any
other bar.
Will you have different
events for holidays?
FR: Right now we’re not
planning special events
or weekly promotions.
Our plan is to be a
neighborhood bar by day
and then offer something
sexier at night. As Mike
said, a place to meet
for a drink without the
distractions. The focus
is on the personal
interaction, and our staff,
and our cocktails are the
entertainment.
You seem very excited
about it.
FD: We’re all very excited.
I’ve been dreaming of
opening a bar for over
eight years, and it’s finally
happening. And how
cool that I’ve come back
360 degrees to the place
where I began my career
in NYC nightlife.
FR: Franco and I tried a
few times up in HK, but
things never transpired.
Then we met with Michael
about this opportunity in
Chelsea.
MM: The previous lease
was up here on 19th
Street, and my other
partner, Bob Barbero,
and I were looking for
a new project. It just all
came together at the
right time. After almost
two years of planning
and a brutal three-month
build out, REBAR is
finally here, and we’re
definitely very excited
to offer something new
and different to the
neighborhood and the
community.
Congratulations
on the new
venture, and we
look forward to
celebrating the
start of a new era
with a return to our
roots, as REBAR
opens in Chelsea in
early April.
Christopher Robin
BY IAN-MICHAEL BERGERON
@ianmichaelinwonderland
I grew up on Disney movies.
The first movie I ever saw
in theaters was “Aladdin.”
I loved everything about it:
twinkish Aladdin, beautiful
Jasmine (later in life I met
the voice of Jasmine, Linda
Larkin, which was a dream
come true), that cute little
monkey, a flamboyant genie.
What more could I want in
life?
I wanted to be blond, like
Cinderella and Aurora, but
my favorite Disney princess
was, by far, Belle from
“Beauty and the Beast.”
Belle was beautiful; Belle
was smart; Belle was a fellow
brunette. We both loved to
read and dreamed of more
than our provincial lives.
(Though, let’s be honest, if
someone as hairy and chesty
and handsome as Gaston
came along and wanted to
be with me, I’d be naked
and lubed up before his
little gay friend could finish
that song.) (And, YES, I’m
so fucking excited for the
new live-action film starring
Emma Watson.)
A lot of people say that
Disney movies, specifically
the ones involving
princesses, gave them
unrealistic expectations
about love. They say people
who love these movies need
to grow up. I used to think
that way, especially when my
first boyfriend broke up with
me on my 17th birthday, or
when The Ex Fiancé broke
off our engagement. Now,
however, I see things a little
differently.
Sure, they always end up
happily ever after. And
maybe life doesn’t work that
way, and that’s an unrealistic
expectation I hope for. But
look at the leading men in
these movies.
They weren’t perfect. The
Beast is a literal beast,
one Belle has to tame (for
lack of a better word) and
groom (I really need better
words) before they can
be together. Aladdin is a
street-rat thief; Jasmine
is the one who can save
him from a life of poverty.
Prince Eric is an idiot who
doesn’t take any of Ariel’s
body-language hints, AND
he tries to marry someone
else. (Never mind that it’s
Ursula, and he’s just under
her spell.) Prince Charming
is a drunk mess who doesn’t
recognize Cinderella when
she isn’t wearing stripper
heels, and c’mon, she cannot
be the only size 7 in all the
kingdom. Li Shang didn’t
even know that Fa Mulan
was a woman!
My point: Nobody is perfect.
In Disney world or in real life.
There’s always an adventure.
There’s always a journey.
There’s always a villain,
be it an ex-boyfriend who
won’t go away, a “friend”
who doesn’t like you or a
family member who doesn’t
approve of your sexuality.
There are always cute little
animals to help you, be it
an ex-boyfriend who gives
you advice, a friend who
keeps you inspired or a
family member who’s there
for you when you’re down.
Sometimes it takes the
leading man a while to figure
everything out before he’s
ready for happy ever after.
And if I’m just Christopher
Robin, living in a Disney
fantasy world, I don’t want to
grow up.
Sherry Vine
Make ‘Em Laugh
If there’s one queen that everyone knows and loves in this
business, it’s the internationally known, viral sensation and the
filthiest queen in town, Sherry Vine!
Celebrating her 25th drag anniversary this April, I decided to sit
down with this lady and try to figure out just what is her secret to
maintaining 25 years of success in one of the toughest cities and
industries to stay relevant in.
Hey, babe! Twenty-five years in drag;
that’s incredible. I’ve only been around
for a fraction of that time here in NYC,
but I’ve loved getting the chance to
work with you every Tuesday night
here at Therapy. More importantly, I’m
honored to call you my friend. So let’s
do this before the dementia sets in…
Wait, who are you?
Hahaha! What made you start doing
drag?
I loved playing dress up, as most kids do,
and never outgrew it! LOL! When I was in
college, I was studying theatre, and when
I read a play, let’s say “A Streetcar Named
Desire,” I thought, “Blanche is the fun
part!” So it really came from a theatrical
place. After college, in L.A., I went out
in drag with Candis Cayne for fun, and
someone asked me if I performed,
and I said, “Um, yes,” and that was the
beginning. But I really wanted to do
something different that I had not seen
in a gay bar in West Hollywood. Most of
the bars had glamour queens lip syncing
to pop divas (which I love!); it just wasn’t
what I wanted to do. So Sherry was a
broken down showgirl! I started with
a monologue about being down and
out and then sang a Torch song, “Black
Coffee.”
What was New York like for you back
then as a new drag performer? What
challenges did you face?
NYC in the early 1990s was so exciting!
I was young, right out of school, and had
never experienced that before. There
were so many clubs and parties, and
“anything goes” was the theme. Pre-
Giuliani! Because of that, there were
1,000 drag queens. You had the East
Village scene, which was completely
different from the West Village drag
scene. Club kids, Boy Bar beauties—it
was so diverse, and there was work for
everyone. I literally worked every single
night, sometimes 30 days in a row! So
the only challenge I felt was making
myself stand out and trusting that I had
something to offer that maybe people
wanted to see.
There are so many queens that look
up to you. Who were your role models
back when you started?
Wow, so many! I certainly looked up to
Joey Arias, Lady Bunny, RuPaul—all who I
knew about before moving to NYC. Raven
O became my drag mother. Certainly,
coming from the theatre and doing drag,
I worshiped Charles Busch.
How has the drag scene changed for
you significantly over the years?
You know, it really hasn’t. I’ve
witnessed numerous, what I call “drag
renaissances,” over the years. Every
so many years, a crop of new queens
pops up. And you have the whole mix:
super talented queens that look good,
sing, dance, act, etc. You have your look
queens. You have your “I want a free
drink” queens.
Where did your knack for parodies
come from?
LOL—this is the TRUTH. In high school
I auditioned for the Wizard of Oz, sure I
was going to be cast as the scarecrow.
When I didn’t get it, I was so bitter I
rewrote every song into a filthy parody
and planned on putting copies of the
new lyrics in all the programs. Of course,
that never happened, but I still remember
the words. I have always been the Carol
Burnett of drag. I learned at a young age
if I could make people laugh then maybe
they wouldn’t tease me. I was in control
of why they were laughing. It empowered
me. That feeling never left. Someone
recently came to me after a show and
said, “I lost my job, my house, I’m lost,
but you just made me forget about that
for an hour.” That’s my job.
Who are
some of
the most
influential
people in
your life?
I am
influenced
by different
people
every single
day. My BFF,
Jackie Beat,
inspires me,
because
when we are
together we
are always
laughing
and thinking of ideas. My best friend
and creative partner Josh Rosenzweig is
always giving me inspiration. Sometimes
when I need to start a little fire I watch
videos of Debbie Harry—FLAWLESS!
Who are some of your favorite people
to work with here in New York?
Well, I do love working with Peppermint.
She’s so easy going and nice and
talented. We’re so different, but together
it just works. She has no idea how funny
she is! Joey Arias is fearless. I’ve never
seen anyone do what she does. I’ve seen
her walk onto a stage with hundreds of
people out there and tell the orchestra
“just play something,” and improvise a
song. It’s amazing! Absolutely no fear.
What do you think the drag community
needs more of?
I think they are supportive for the most
part, but it’s rare I see another queen at
one of my shows. I wish the girls would
go out more. I try to see shows and show
support. I know it’s hard; everyone’s
working every night, or you’d rather watch
“Westworld.” LOL. I wish there were more
big group shows. At Boy Bar we would
rehearse all week and turn it out in a big
show. It wasn’t always about money. But
honestly, I love the NYC queens! They
been incredibly supportive of me, being
in my videos, performing at events, etc.
Tell me, what’s your secret?
Semen. Honey, I sincerely love performing
as Sherry today as much as I did 25 years
ago!
Lastly,
Sherry,
how old
ARE you…
REALLY?
Next Tuesday
we can go
into the
bathroom
together,
and you can
count the
rings around
my hole!
Haha!
Thanks for
sharing,
Sherry. It’s always a pleasure. See you
next Tuesday. Tell all the kids where
they can find you!
Love you doll! Tuesdays BiPolar at
Therapy with Peppermint. Wednesdays
at Industry for my only NYC solo show
Adult Content, and always on the road!
the bar is a piano bar, and
downstairs we have our
introduced last week, the
go-go boys to that area.
What nights will the male
dancers be there?
We are doing go-go boys,
Friday and Saturday night
for now, 9pm - 2am.
different dancers, and its
interactive.
Go-go boys always
seem to be a hit?
the weekends, just another
The best resource
for managing your
HIV is … you.
If you have HIV, you
know that your health
concerns are unique. The
treatment regimen that
is right for someone else
may not be right for you.
If you are interested in switching your HIV
medications, you may want to consider the
ATLAS clinical research study.
The study is being conducted to learn if two
investigational medications, one called longacting
cabotegravir (CAB LA) and one called
long-acting rilpivirine (RPV LA), can keep the
amount of HIV virus in your body at low levels
compared to an HIV regimen containing three
HIV medications. The study will evaluate
these two investigational medications in
adults with HIV that is currently controlled by
existing HIV medication(s).
You may be eligible to participate in the
ATLAS study if you:
• Are at least 18 years old
• Have been diagnosed with HIV that is
controlled (suppressed) by your current
HIV medications
• Have been on the same HIV medication(s)
and dose(s) for at least 6 months
(approximately)
There are other requirements to be in the
study that the study doctor will discuss
with you to determine if you are eligible to
participate.
Study participation will last a minimum of
1–3 years. Participants will receive studyrelated
tests and procedures, as well as the
investigational medications, at no cost.
