Since 2010 we have been showcasing initiatives, opportunities and incredible capability from across the continent. Capitalising on our success with Origin Africa 2015 held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, we are proud to announce an expanded exhibitor base and wider range of products and services for consideration by buyers and visitors from over 25 countries. Country profile Madagascar’s flourishing textile and garment industry By John Hargreaves The Indian Ocean island of Madagascar will be host of the 2016 edition of Origin Africa. The organisers, the African Cotton and Textile Industries Federation (ACTIF) expect to exceed the success of the 2015 edition held at the Millennium Conference Centre in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A total of 187 exhibitors from 26 countries participated with approximately 3,000 visitors over the 3 days. The organisers successfully hosted 10 seminars and a designer showcase event in conjunction with Hub of Africa If you missed Addis Ababa, you simply can’t afford to stay away November 3 – 5, 2016. Madagascar is as unique as they come. The fourth largest island on the planet teems with rich wildlife, 80% of whom cannot be found anywhere else on earth. Its unspoilt beaches on its 5000 km long pristine coastline are an allure to tourists who visit the nation every year. Additionally, Madagascar has a rich cultural heritage of very fine handicrafts including fine handcrafted textile products, Madagascar has a flourishing textile and garment industry producing diverse products, which are exported all over the world. The EPZ legislation, passed in 1989, has played a major role in boosting the industry. The industry employs over 100 000 people in its 90 factories, which produce a wide range of products for large retailers, catalogues, brands and also haute couture brands. Exports reached US$500 million in 2015. Some of the products include: • Cotton and synthetic fibre fine knits • Cashmere sweaters • Lambswool, Merino and cotton sweaters • Woven dresses and casual shirts • Sleepwear • Children’s and baby’s clothing (woven, knits and denim) • Denim jeans and jackets • Athletic and sports garments • Specialised professional and protection garments, uniforms (Army, nuclear plants etc.) • Chinos • Fancy costumes for kids • Ladies dresses and blouses • Ladies and men’s accessories (ties, cravats and scarves of silk and other fibres) • Woven and crocheted ladies handbags etc. • Haute couture ladies dresses, trousers and blouses • Hand embroided home textiles Haute couture brands include, inter alia: Kenzo, Agnes B, Baby Dior, Celine, Vanessa Bruneau, Hermes, Zadig et Voltaire etc. Some of the large retailers include, inter alia: M&S, Inditex group (Zara), American Eagle, Trois Suisses, Monoprix, Woolworth, Mr Price, Foschini Group, Kardstadt, Arcadia Group, Vente Privee.com, Peter Hann, Kaufhof, One Jeanswear Group, etc. Brands include, inter alia: Puma, Addidas, Petit Bateau, Orchestra, Celio, Levis, Wrangler, Jordache Group, Perry Ellis, etc. JUNE / JULY 2016 9
