Food Waste Management Market
Food waste is defined as any food material that is lost or discarded at the production, processing, retail and
consumption stages of the food supply chain.
Food waste management involves all the methods used to handle the vast amounts of waste generated at all
the above-mentioned stages. These methods differ based on the kind of waste that is being treated, the
chemical process in use and the end-purpose of the treated waste. Composting and anaerobic digestion are
two common methods employed in treating food waste.
Market Dynamics of Food Waste Management Market:
Wastage of food can be a result of factors such as production inefficiency, processing losses, marketing
necessities and consumption-related issues. Food wastage due to production inefficiency is more frequent in
developing regions and wastage at the consumer-end is higher in developed regions.
The market for food waste management is closely tied to the increasing production and consumption of
food, the rising environmental threat from landfilling of waste, and the economic incentive for waste
treatment.
The primary driver for the food waste management market is the high and increasing food consumption and
production across the globe. The problem of food waste is getting accelerated with many countries and
international organizations pushing for the free exchange of food across the world and the fulfillment of
basic nutrient requirements of every individual.
The traditional methods of waste management involve landfills and incineration. Both these processes cause
lasting damage to the environment and actively aid in climate change. Realization of these threats at a global
and national level has led to increased regulation and safer treatment of waste.
The significant reason for the generation of waste at the consumer end is due to a multitude of reasons such
as bulk-buying/discount shopping wherein large quantities of food are bought due to low prices,
inappropriate storage, low consumption of leftovers and others. The wastage of food at the consumer end is
not just limited to countries with an abundance of food supply or strong economy but also to lower-income
countries.
At the retail end, the increasing emphasis on the appearance of food is leading to the generation of
significant quantities of food waste. It is estimated that over 30% of the vegetable crop in U.K. was lost due
to such practices in the year 2014.
Market Segmentation of Food Waste Management Market:
The food waste management market is segmented on the basis of waste type, recycling process, and enduse
application.
On the basis of waste type, the market is segmented into liquid and solid food waste. The primary difference
between both these segments is based on the physical state of the waste, but also extends to the source of
Food Waste Management Market
such waste and treatment process employed. Much of the food waste generated at the processing point of
the food supply chain is liquid waste, and waste generated at retail and consumer end is predominantly solid
waste.
On the basis of end-use application, the market is segmented as animal feed, fertilizer, renewable energy
and others (personal care products, industrial uses). Owing to the increasing demand for meat and meat
products, the demand from animal feed segment is high. The use of food waste as fertilizer is an age-old
phenomenon but is limited by the fact that much of this use is in the form of on-farm application.
Renewable energy segment mainly involves production of biogas and is fast gaining popularity due to
reduced collection and processing costs.
On the basis of recycling process, the market is segmented into composting and anaerobic digestion. Both
these process are equally prominent and are used depending on the end-use. Composting is the treatment
of food waste with naturally occurring microorganisms within an enclosed area and in the presence of
oxygen. Anaerobic digestion is the treatment of food waste in the absence of oxygen and is particularly used
in the production of energy.
Due to increasing consumer awareness and governmental regulation, North America and Western Europe
dominate the food waste management market. These regions house the maximum number of companies
are also pioneers in certain technical processes. The low public awareness is a key drawback for the food
waste management market in developing regions such as APEJ and Latin America. The market is highly
fragmented across the globe due to the high regionality of the market.
