“This is whaT you offer women and girls in our area every day
by being involved wiTh The women’s funding alliance: Hope.”
“Change has come to America.” We all heard that phrase in November as
our President-elect made history. Many of us have felt the need for change
for quite a while. We have seen great hardship or experienced it ourselves,
and we want something new. At the Women’s Funding Alliance (WFA) we
know a good place to start to bring about change; around the world and
close to home, it’s proven that if you want to change society, you must invest in
women and girls.
We took that belief to heart in 2007 and 2008 as we made some significant
strides in advancing our mission. Our 2007 landmark report, A
Closer Look, provided rich information on the status of women and girls
in our area. We used that data to inform and invigorate our 2007 granting.
We also outlined new granting strategies in 2008 that increased
opportunities for women and their families and built their community
leadership and power.
For example, as a result of learning that breast cancer is more deadly
in communities of color, we funded the Breast Cancer Resource
Center which does cancer screening and outreach to women of color
in rural areas. They reached over 8,000 women last year and claim
that the likelihood of women’s lives being saved increased as a result of
their outreach and education funded by WFA.
We also put extra money toward an anti-trafficking program in King
County because we learned that our region is a major gateway for human
trafficking. And in advance of this historic election we funded four
organizations working to mobilize and engage marginalized women
in the political process. This resulted in the registering of hundreds of
women to vote, most of whom had never voted in their lives.
One of those women spoke at a reception we held this past December.
She talked about how being poor is hard work and takes a lot of energy.
She remembered wondering how she would have time to vote or engage
when she was just trying to survive. But, she said, being involved helped
her find her voice. It helped her find hope.
This is what you offer women and girls in our area every day by being
involved with the Women’s Funding Alliance: Hope. A new vision for the
future. A chance to start again. Real change.
Of course, not all change is welcome. On January 8 of this year, we lost
our inspiring Board President, Leah McCollough. Leah died unexpectedly,
and all too soon – she was only 43. So much of what we accomplished this
year was due to Leah’s dynamic leadership and strategic vision for where
WFA could go. She will be deeply missed. You can read more about how we
are honoring Leah’s legacy on page 9.

(WFA) has been able to achieve many goals during the 18 month
period of January 2007 through June 2008*.
Highlights include:
� Publishing A Closer Look in June 2007. This landmark study
provides an in-depth look at the quality of life for women and
girls in King, Pierce, Snohomish and Whatcom counties. The
report has reached thousands of people directly through research,
briefings, community forums, mailings, presentations and media
coverage. After its publication, we convened key stakeholders in
all four counties to provide solutions to the study’s findings. The
information compiled from these sessions helped guide WFA’s
strategic direction and granting priorities.
� Using feedback from numerous convenings centered around A
Closer Look the board and staff further refined our strategic priorities
to be a:
� High Impact Funder, with civic engagement/leadership
development and economic opportunity as priority areas.
� Voice that amplifies issues for women and girls in our region
and promotes solutions to the challenges they face.
� Responding to the data from A Closer Look, in the spring of 2008
WFA distributed $75,000 in Civic Engagement & Leadership
Development grants to Equal Rights Washington, OneAmerica,
Parents Organizing for Welfare and Economic Rights and
Statewide Poverty Action Network. These agencies are working to
register female voters, ensure turnout on election days and develop
marginalized women to be leaders within their communities through political involvement.
� Doubling WFA’s grant making over the past four years. In the last seven years we’ve seen our funding grow
from supporting 15 organizations annually to nearly 40.

2007 communiTy resPonse granTs
Community Response grants provide operating or project
support to organizations providing direct services, often
tied with social change efforts, to women and girls in the
Puget Sound region.
Abused Deaf Women’s Advocacy Services (ADWAS) -
$10,000: ADWAS provides services to Deaf and Deaf-Blind
victims/survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.
WFA funding was used for operating support and equipped
ADWAS as it worked to increase its private funding base and
to enhance the skills of their business manager, eliminating
the need for a contract accountant.
Asian & Pacific Islander Women & Family Safety Center
- $10,000: The Safety Center’s mission is to organize communities,
educate, train, and provide technical assistance
and comprehensive culturally relevant services on domestic
violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking to Asian and
Pacific Islander community members, service providers, survivors,
and families. WFA funds supported program costs
for their human trafficking education and organizing.
Breast Cancer Resource Center (BCRC) - $10,000: Located
in Pierce County, the BCRC’s mission is to enhance quality
of life for people touched by breast cancer and to increase
awareness and knowledge of breast cancer and

breast health. WFA funding was used towards the salary of
an African American outreach worker who educated and
encouraged African American women to be screened for
breast cancer.
Church of Mary Magdalene/Mary’s Place - $10,000: Mary’s
Place is a diverse community of homeless and formerly homeless
women which provides a safe place for women to develop
themselves and reach their full potential. WFA grant funds
were used to support a new project called the Safety Initiative
which aimed to increase the safety of homeless women, both
while in the center and on the streets.
Family Planning of Clallam County (FPCC) - $10,000:
FPCC strives for all individuals in Clallam county to have
access to healthcare, education and social services relating to
human sexuality and fertility. WFA funding supported their
Honoring Women’s Health Project which increases the health
and well-being of medically-underserved, low-income, rural,
sexual minority, Latina and/or American Indian women in
Clallam and Jefferson counties through outreach, education
and screening services.
Jubilee Women’s Center - $10,000: Jubilee exists to provide
women a safe and supportive place to live and an opportunity
to learn while becoming self-reliant in housing and employment.
WFA funds were used for operating costs during a particularly
important time as Jubilee renovated their facilities
to meet an increased need for services.
A Legacy of Organizing and Leadership (LELO) - $10,000:
LELO strives to empower workers of color, low-income
and women workers to assert their rights, improve working
conditions and gain a voice locally and across the globe.
WFA funding was used to help increase leadership of women
and girls within the organization through their Women’s
Leadership Team.
Lydia Place - $5,000: Located in Whatcom county, the mission
of Lydia Place is to provide a multi-faceted program
that supports women and their children in transition from
homelessness to independence. WFA funds were used for the
Women’s In House Program which is designed to help women
increase their knowledge and awareness of child development
and life skills, as well as increase their ability to achieve goals
towards self sufficiency and positive parenting.
Metrocenter YMCA - $10,000: A branch of the YMCA of
Greater Seattle, Metrocenter YMCA strengthens communities
by creating programs through which youth and young adults
can unlock their full potential for education, employment,
leadership, civic engagement and community service. WFA
funding supported their Girls of Promise program which
strives for adolescent girls to gain self confidence, prevent depression,
act as participating members of our communities,
and learn new skills and behaviors for a healthy life.

Northwest Indian College Cooperative Extension - $7,500:
The mission of the Northwest Indian College is to promote
self-determination of indigenous people through education.
WFA funds were used to cover costs associated with their annual
Native American Women and Girls Conference which
serves as an opportunity for girls to share culture, develop
confidence and learn life and communication skills.
Real Change Homeless Empowerment Project - $10,000:
Real Change provides a voice for people while taking action
to end homelessness by meeting the immediate needs of
those most affected by poverty and creating long-term strategies
for social change. WFA funds were dedicated to the
Women of Real Change program which offers a safe space to
build trusting, positive relationships among women who sell
their newspaper and to create opportunities to be involved in
advocacy work.
Verbena - $10,000: During its lifespan, Verbena built vibrant
communities for lesbians, bisexual and queer women and
trans-gendered individuals through health advocacy, education,
support services and access to care. Funds from WFA
were used to offset ongoing programming costs including
programming for disabled and elderly lesbian, bisexual,
transgender, and queer women.
Womencare Shelter - $6,500: Located in Whatcom county,
Womencare Shelter is a feminist organization working to end
domestic violence by providing safe shelter, 24-hour crisis services
and community education. Funds from WFA were used
for operating costs to help support the increasing need of
their confidential shelter and domestic violence services.

Making Change grants support projects working to change
societal attitudes and the larger systems and institutions that
influence the lives of women and girls.
Chaya - $25,000: The mission of Chaya is to support South
Asian survivors of domestic violence and to engage communities
to change social conditions that enable oppression, especially
violence against women. WFA funds were used towards
delivery of their Community Mobilization Program which
reaches out to educate specific groups within the South Asian
population and various religious communities.
Northwest Health Law Advocates (NoHLA) - $16,000: The
mission of NoHLA is to work toward achieving a seamless
health care system in which individuals are assured of basic
rights, protections and continuity of care regardless of the
type of health insurance they have. WFA funds supported
their Take Charge: Removing Barriers to Family Planning
Services program which provides family planning services
to individuals whose incomes fall below 200% of the federal
poverty level and are not otherwise Medicaid eligible.

2007 making change granTee:
norThwesT women’s law
cenTer (nwwlc) - $25,000
The Northwest Women’s Law Center (NWWLC) received
funding from WFA to help launch their project
focused on making family and civil court just and safe
for women. This project addresses the ongoing reality of
the re-victimization of domestic violence survivors when
court systems are used abusively by their ex-partners. Examples
of manipulative use of the system include filing
motions that force a woman to return to court repeatedly,
making false allegations against a woman, and using
visitation with children to maintain contact and attempt
to control her. NWWLC identifies such abuses as one of
the main barriers to justice for violence survivors.
With WFA’s funding, NWWLC has been able to make
important inroads to a more just system for women. Some
of these accomplishments include increasing awareness
of this issue among women, court personnel, advocates
and other key stakeholders, engaging a Supreme Court
Justice on this work, gaining a deep understanding of
the factors that create this problem, identifying tools
that could be used to challenge such abuses, and developing
approaches for streamlining the family court system
to better protect women.
Through this project, violence survivors are becoming
empowered and are not only fighting for their
own well-being, but speaking out and partnering with
NWWLC to help other women. Moving forward with
this work, NWWLC continues to place additional focus
on new legislation that better protects violence survivors
as well as outreaching to even more women.

Civic Engagement & Leadership Development grants
fund projects that 1) develop women who are marginalized
to be leaders and, 2) implement voter registration/
education efforts to increase female voter turnout in marginalized
communities.
OneAmerica - $25,000: OneAmerica’s mission is to advance
the fundamental principles of democracy and justice at the
local, state, and national levels by building power within immigrant
communities, in collaboration with key allies. WFA
funds were used to increase engagement and leadership in
the political process among refugee and immigrant women.
Parents Organizing for Welfare and Economic Rights
(POWER) - $15,000: POWER is an Olympia based organization
of low-income parents and allies advocating for a social
safety net while working towards a world where children and
caregivers are truly valued and poverty has been eradicated.
POWER used WFA funding to educate and register new
women voters and develop low-income, politically-involved
female leaders within Washington state.
Statewide Poverty Action Network, a program of Solid
Ground - $10,000: Statewide Poverty Action Network exists
to address the root causes of poverty with real solutions.
WFA funds were used to fund their Vote for a Change campaign
that increased voter turnout and participation among
low-income women in Washington state.
Equal Rights Washington (ERW) - $25,000: ERW is a statewide
political advocacy organization for the lesbian, gay,
bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community of Washington
state. WFA funding was used to build leadership and
civic engagement skills in lesbian, bisexual, transgender
and queer women in order to eliminate heterosexism and
homophobia throughout healthcare and public health systems,
as well as to engage them in voter registration outreach
and education.

workPlace camPaign granTee:
women’s housing equaliTy and
enhancemenT league

gives those who have finally made it the chance to
pass on their wisdom and to be an inspiration to
those who are just coming out of the confusion and
hopelessness of being on the streets.”

Women’s Housing Equality and Enhancement
League (WHEEL) is a community-based, grassroots organization
which gives voice and leadership to homeless
and low-income women, facilitates campaigns around
increased services and safety for homeless women, and
develops and supports self-managed shelters. Through
its work, WHEEL is a catalyst for social justice organizing
and leadership development among these women in
King County.
Unrestricted operating support, like the funds
WHEEL receives from WFA, are critical to ensuring its
work continues and grows to the next level. WHEEL has
used these funds to strengthen its core organizing efforts
and to expand the number of ongoing projects. Further,
they have been able to offer a wider variety of opportunities
for homeless and low-income women to become leaders
in their communities, including engaging in political
advocacy, campaigning for survival shelter, staffing a shelter,
and facilitating a self-managed day center. In 2008,
approximately 100 women were involved in WHEEL’s
self-managed organizing and education/empowerment
efforts. Over 20 women emerged as leaders in WHEEL’s
ongoing activities.
One participant in WHEEL’s programs says that her
participation literally changed her life. She came to
WHEEL after having been homeless and laid off from
her job. After staying in a shelter and hearing about
WHEEL, she became involved as a way to pay back all the
help and support she’d received. She emphasizes that the
leadership of homeless and formerly homeless women in
WHEEL is what makes their efforts so effective. Finally,
she reflects that the more involved she became, the more
productive she felt and now lives independently, makes
her own income and sees herself beyond merely going
through the motions of life, but truly thriving.

Designed for philanthropists who want to fully engage in the grant making process by pooling their resources, the Ripple
Fund donor circle expands WFA’s impact in the community.
2007 riPPle fund granTs
In 2007, Ripple Fund grants focused on organizations
working with refugee and immigrant women and girls.
Chaya - $8,000: Chaya focuses on ending domestic violence
in South Asian communities through advocacy and community
mobilization. This grant helped broaden Chaya’s scope
to actively involve other South Asian and non-South Asian
constituencies who have a stake in their vision.
International District Housing Alliance (IDHA) - $8,000:
IDHA is committed to improving the quality of life for International
District residents and Asian and Pacific Islanders of
greater Seattle. WFA funds were used for the Solace Program
which provides culturally appropriate shelter and services for
immigrant and refugee victims of domestic violence.
Kent Youth and Family Services - $1,500: Kent Youth and
Family Services provide professional counseling, education
and support services to children, youth and their families.
This grant was given in honor of the leadership of the
program’s director.
Mt. Baker Planned Parenthood (MBPP) - $6,000: MBPP is
the leader in providing affordable, reproductive healthcare
and education programs to individuals in Whatcom, Skagit
and San Juan Counties. This grant helped fund Entre Amigas,
which equips Latina women with the tools to educate
their community while increasing their own knowledge of
healthcare issues.

2008 riPPle fund granTs
In 2008, Ripple Fund grants focused on the prevention of
violence towards women and girls with particular emphasis
on prevention, education and community outreach.
Consejo Counseling & Referral Services - $10,000:
Consejo Counseling & Referral Services provides a
continuum of behavioral health, substance abuse and
domestic violence services to individuals and families
across Washington state. WFA supported a pilot project
created to increase Latina leadership in the field of
violence against women, as well as to teach community
engagement as a strategy to decrease isolation of abused
Latina women and increase community support.
New Beginnings - $6,000: New Beginnings’ mission is to
provide shelter, advocacy and support for battered women
and their children, as well as to change attitudes and social
institutions that foster and perpetuate violence. WFA
funding was used to support their Owning Up program for
middle school girls, with the goals of increasing understanding
of domestic violence, increasing problem-solving and
decision-making skills, and shifting attitudes and behaviors
amongst peers and intimate partners.
Refugee Women’s Alliance (ReWA) - $10,000: ReWA is a
nonprofit, multi-ethnic organization that promotes inclusion,
independence, personal leadership and strong communities
by providing refugee and immigrant women and
families with culturally appropriate services. WFA funds
were used to provide extensive refugee and immigrant outreach
and mobilization throughout King County in order to
educate them about domestic violence and rights of women
within the United States.
Youth Eastside Services (YES) - $10,000: Through intervention,
outreach and prevention, YES builds confidence
and responsibility, strengthens family relationships, and
advocates for a safer community that cares for its youth.
WFA funds were used to support YES’s Violence Prevention
Programs which address such issues as teen dating
violence, domestic violence at home, bullying, harassment,
and school violence.
WFA’s granting total includes $12,300 in donor advised funds
to agencies investing in justice, health and opportunity for
women and girls.

Women’s Funding Alliance’s audited financial statements
are for the 18 month period ending June 30,
2008. An 18 month period audit was conducted to align
with a change to a July 1-June 30 fiscal year. Because of
FASB regulations, this audit does not include donoradvised
revenue or designated gifts.
According to the Office of the Secretary of State
Charities Program, 75 percent of WFA’s total expenses
during this eighteen month time frame were directed
to support program services.

with [others] allows donors to leverage each other’s gifts and amplify their own power.”

for women and girls in our community.
Make a cash donation. Gifts can be made via check or credit card
payable to Women’s Funding Alliance.
Give online. A secure and efficient way to donate to WFA at
www.wfalliance.org.
Give a gift of stock. All gifts of stock made to WFA are recorded at
current market value. You will receive an immediate tax deduction
based on market value for securities held longer than one year. Give a
gift of stock to avoid capital gains tax payable if you sold the stock and
made a cash gift. Please contact WFA for stock transfer details.
Give through your company’s charitable giving program. Your donation
will automatically deduct from your paycheck.
