1. Know what Internet dating is. Online<br />

personals and Internet dating are nothing<br />

more than a different type of introduction.<br />

It should <strong>be</strong> just a piece of your overall<br />

social plan. Be good <strong>to</strong> yourself and love<br />

will follow. Make it fun or don’t do it.<br />

2. Know what you want. Have a good<br />

idea what you like in a partner in terms of<br />

character, <strong>he</strong>art, compatibility and personality.<br />

Don’t <strong>be</strong> entirely focused on what<br />

you don’t want; <strong>to</strong>o much negativity can<br />

make dating feel like a job.<br />

3. Know what you don’t want. Weed<br />

out t<strong>he</strong> losers or potentially dangerous<br />

people. Trust your intuition. Some clues of<br />

strange <strong>be</strong>havior may include <strong>to</strong>o many e-<br />

mails <strong>to</strong>o soon, sexually explicit language<br />

or <strong>to</strong>o many hidden secrets or contradictions<br />

(what a married person might do <strong>to</strong><br />

cover up t<strong>he</strong>ir home life, for example).<br />

4. Don’t scare t<strong>he</strong>m away. A lot of freaks<br />

are out t<strong>he</strong>re. Don’t appear desperate or<br />

needy by <strong>as</strong>king <strong>to</strong>o many questions or<br />

<strong>be</strong>ing <strong>to</strong>o much of a burden <strong>to</strong>o soon.<br />

5. Be Safe. Don’t give out your personal<br />

information. Meet in a public place first<br />

and tell a friend w<strong>he</strong>re you will <strong>be</strong>. Bring a<br />

cell phone with you. Nothing is risk free.<br />

Stay alert, make good choices and always<br />

know that things aren’t always what t<strong>he</strong>y<br />

seem.<br />

“No matter w<strong>he</strong>re you meet a person<br />

you’re taking a chance,” Dutc<strong>he</strong>r said. “If<br />

you have a hard time meeting people, this<br />

is t<strong>he</strong> perfect <strong>to</strong>ol <strong>to</strong> do that. It allows you<br />

t<strong>he</strong> opportunity <strong>to</strong> learn a lot about a person<br />

<strong>be</strong>fore you actually make that first<br />

meeting with t<strong>he</strong>m.” �<br />
