In 1965, Al <strong>Streb</strong> incorporated <strong>Streb</strong> Construction<br />
Co., Inc., the Iowa City company he founded after<br />
returning from the Korean War. Around the same<br />
time, former Cedar Rapids Streets Commissioner,<br />
Jack Eggleston, joined forces with Ed and Leo<br />
Fitzpatrick to form E & F Paving Company in Cedar<br />
Rapids. As both businesses mark 50 years, now under the<br />
same umbrella of <strong>Streb</strong> Construction, family members<br />
and employees continue the tradition of customer service<br />
started a half-century ago.<br />

STREB CONSTRUCTION<br />
“We just basically grew the business,” co-owner and vice president,<br />
Steve <strong>Streb</strong>, said of he and his brother, Dave <strong>Streb</strong>, who serves as<br />
president and co-owner of <strong>Streb</strong> Construction.<br />
Their father, Al <strong>Streb</strong>, started out building houses before developing<br />
commercial buildings and residential subdivisions during the 1970s<br />
in the North Liberty and Iowa City area.<br />
His dad wasn’t necessarily considered “handy,” Steve said with a<br />
smile, but provided the organization<br />
and leadership needed to operate a<br />
successful business.<br />

“In 1983, there were only 13 building<br />
permits taken out in all of Iowa City,”<br />
said Steve, who received a business degree<br />
from Loras College. “Needless to<br />
say, there wasn’t a whole lot going on in<br />
the building industry.”<br />

began focusing on concrete<br />
work, beginning<br />
with paving jobs in subdivisions.<br />
The economic<br />
recession of 2008 also forced a change,<br />
but this time in the types of jobs <strong>Streb</strong><br />
Construction pursued.<br />
In the past decades, they haven’t looked<br />
back, with the business now firmly dedicated<br />
to concrete paving, primarily in<br />
the Corridor as well as other Eastern<br />

Iowa communities, working on commercial parking lots, city<br />
streets, interstates, county roads, airports and subdivisions.<br />
The ability to adapt has continued, with the addition of GPS<br />
technology in recent years to provide more accurate work.<br />
The technology replaces a previous method of guiding paving<br />
machines with string, Steve said.<br />
Rather than buy a new machine, the GPS system was retrofitted<br />
on a slipform concrete paver, he noted, allowing the machine<br />
to continue its use, but with more accuracy and costsavings.<br />
Plaques recognizing numerous honors the company has been<br />
awarded line the walls of the office in Iowa City, including excellence<br />
awards from the Iowa Concrete Paving Association and<br />
Iowa Department of Transportation.<br />

Many of <strong>Streb</strong> Construction’s 75 employees have been with<br />
the company for numerous years, including recent retiree,<br />
Gary Evans. “He remembers me being born,” said Steve, who<br />
is now 44.<br />
During its anniversary year, the company is moving to a new<br />
location just outside of Coralville, with the goal to be in the<br />
new office and shop building before the end of <strong>2015</strong>.<br />

E & F Paving Company, LLC, started out as E & F Cement and<br />
Asphaltic Concrete Inc., in 1964, making it slightly older than<br />
<strong>Streb</strong>’s, but navigating a similar pathway of a family business<br />
adapting to the times.<br />

General Manager Jim Fitzpatrick, the son of co-founder Leo<br />
Fitzpatrick, just retired this year after 50 years in the business.<br />
His cousin, Mike Fitzpatrick, son of co-founder Ed Fitzpatrick,<br />
had previously retired, and Rick Eggleston, son of co-founder<br />
Jack Eggleston, remains with the company as a hands-on field<br />
superintendent after buying out the other co-owners in 2000.<br />

While Rick Eggleston sold the company to <strong>Streb</strong>’s<br />
in 2010, E & F Paving continues with 25 employees<br />
in its Cedar Rapids office, performing similar<br />
types of work as <strong>Streb</strong>’s, but with a focus on Linn<br />
County.<br />
Rick said his father originally joined forces with<br />
the Fitzpatrick brothers, who were streets department<br />
employees knowledgeable about concrete.<br />
Ed and Leo, along with their brothers, Irving,<br />
Tom and Don, owned Fitzpatrick Concrete in the<br />
1950s.<br />

World War II and Jack Eggleston joined the Marines at age 17,<br />
just as the war was ending. He later served as Streets Commissioner<br />
in Cedar Rapids in the early 1960s.<br />
Don Fitzpatrick was Assistant Vice President and office manager<br />
for the company.<br />
Times have changed since the labor-intensive work that Rick recalls<br />
when starting with the company as a high school junior.<br />
“My first job was throwing a pile of dirt into a dump truck with a<br />
shovel,” he vividly recalls.<br />
The work still involves physical labor, but is more efficient, so it<br />
can be done with fewer workers. Still, several employees made<br />
a career with E & F. Bob Knake was one of the first employees,<br />
who was with the company from its inception. “He was a very<br />
valuable employee for over 30 years,” Rick said.<br />

teachers who<br />
worked summers<br />
with the company,<br />
and many people to this day tell his father, now living in Hiawatha,<br />
that they were able to pay their way through college by working for<br />
the paving company.<br />
Those workers have gone on to become lawyers, doctors, teachers<br />
and more, Rick said. The company’s relationship with developers<br />
and others in the city has been equally exceptional, he added.<br />
“There are so many good people we have worked with,” he said.<br />
While it’s impossible to calculate how many jobs the company has<br />
completed in the past 50 years, Rick said more than 1.5 million cubic<br />
yards of concrete has been poured since E & F began, growing<br />
from 4,000 cubic yards annually to more than 50,000 per year.<br />
While some of the technology has changed and the land around<br />
the company’s office in southwest Cedar Rapids has developed<br />
dramatically from 1970, when they first moved to the site, they are<br />
proud that their name has carried on.<br />
