The photo shows DNCC clearing Road 79 and its adjoining footpaths yesterday in the Gulshan 2
diplomatic zone, following the road’s obstruction by the Russian Embassy. A DNCC team led by Mayor
Annisul Huq bulldozed 180 three-foot-high heavy planters and metal fences on this road and on Road 83
in the high-secure area. On Tuesday, the authorities of the American Club, also known as the American
Recreation Centre, similarly cleared its stretch of Road 70 in Gulshan 2, following a DNCC request.
With the latest clear out near the Russian embassy, all concrete blocks on the roads in the diplomatic
zone have been removed. The large blocks were used for beautification as well as serving as security
measures, but also obstructed pedestrian movement. On March 4, the US Embassy and the Canadian
High Commission cleared out footpaths adjacent to them. In total DNCC asked eight foreign missions to
remove obstructions they had placed on footpaths next to their missions
Top trade unionist: Bangladesh
labour rights still fall short
• Adil Sakhawat
Though Bangladesh has
made progress in terms of
labour rights and the formation
of trade unions, it is
still far from enough, said
Michael Sommer, FES vice
chairman and former president
of the International
Trade Union Confederation
and German Confederation
of Trade Unions, yesterday.
Speaking at an inauguration
press conference for the
Academy of Work (AoW), a
three month certified education
programme for trade
unionists to create future
leaders, he said: “It is a good
time for Bangladesh to modernise
the existing labour
laws to allow more trade unions
and secure labour rights
in different sectors.”
The AoW programme is
Brac to donate Tk15cr for haors
• Tribune Desk
a collaborative effort among
the Bangladesh Institute of
Labour Studies, Friedrich-
Ebert-Stiftung (FES) and the
Brac Institute of Governance
and Development.
Sixteen Bangladeshi
trade unionists from several
sectors made up the first
batch of the AoW, which
began two weeks ago, even
though the programme was
inaugurated yesterday.
One of the members of
the first batch, Mohammad
Yamin Mia, a production
manager at a factory based
in Pubail, said: “Under this
programme, we are being
taught English and about
labour laws and how to collect
information or conduct
research when any kind of
workers’ crisis occurs.”
During the programme,
however, prominent local
Brac has set up a monthlong
emergency relief programme
to support flash
flood victims in haor areas.
Through the aid programme,
Brac aims to support
50,000 families over
the next one month with Tk-
15cr to help them cope with
the immediate effects of the
calamity on their crops and
livelihoods, a press statement
released yesterday
said.
A result of sudden downpours,
flash floods have
continued for nearly three
weeks, hampering the lives
and livelihoods of haor residents.
The emergency relief
will be distributed in four
districts – Kishoreganj, Sunamganj,
Habiganj and Netrokona
– in coordination
with their local government
authorities.
Considering the fast deteriorating
situation and
spread of floodwaters in
the haor areas in the last 48
hours, Brac undertook this
trade unionist, ZM Kamrul
Anam, president of the Bangladesh
Textile and Garment
Worker League, went on
stage and said: “All the trade
unionists present at the programme
should boycott the
AoW project. No trade unionists
or worker leader is
present among those on the
dais, yet they claim this programme
is for us.”
In response, the chief
guest, State Minister for Labour
and Employment Mujibul
Haque, admitted the veracity
of the claim and urged
the organisers to take the
matter into consideration.
He also suggested that
along with trade unionists,
root level workers who do
not know anything about
labour laws should also be
educated in these issues, especially
women workers. •
aid relief programme in addition
to its regular relief
programmes.
Brac Disaster Management
and Climate Change
Programme Director Gawher
Nayeem Wahra said: “The
situation has rapidly deteriorated
in the last 48 hours.
“A new crisis has also
emerged as fish and ducks
are also dying, in addition to
the widespread flooding of
crops,” she said.
“This effort will support
families to cope with the immediate
crisis,” she added. •
