BY IAN-MICHAEL BERGERON
@ianmichaelinwonderland
I met A at NYC Pride years
ago, when I was dating The
Ex Fiancé. He was sarcastic
and a little pretentious,
so of course I got along
with him perfectly. I got
drunk and spent the whole
day trying to hook him up
with a friend of mine, who
wasn’t interested in him at
all, but the effort didn’t go
unnoticed.
We became casual friends
- we’d see each other out
here and there, say hello,
catch up. We didn’t start to
actually hang out until the
new season of “American
Horror Story” started. We
both loved the show, I
had cable, he didn’t, so he
started coming over on a
weekly basis.
He’d always bring
something sweet for us to
share, usually this delicious
chocolate chip pastry that
he’d pick up fresh from a
bakery down the street. It
was always still warm when I
took my first bite.
That winter I got sick, and
A watched the progression
- one week I had a runny
nose, the next a sore throat,
the next an unmanageable
cough. I had to cancel our
TV night it got so bad, but
I still heard a knock at my
apartment door around
7:30.
Nobody was there, just a
package at my feet.
I brought it inside and
opened it on my bed.
It was a care package:
PART ONE
Just Friends
cough drops, NyQuil,
chicken noodle soup,
Vitamin C gummies (I hate
pills), garlic, the whole deal.
Right at the bottom was a
small white paper bag, and
inside of it our chocolate
chip pastry.
“I’m in love with him,”
I thought, snot running
down my chin. It seemed
such a big, important
gesture: Would I ever take
a 20-minute subway, put
together an expensive care
package, only to leave it
at their door and take the
train home? Would my first
thought, if someone else
cancelled on me, be,
“I have to help them
get better” or “How
will I watch American
Horror Story now?!”
The next week,
feeling refreshed
and nearly back
to perfect health,
I bought him
a single pink
rose as a thank
you, but an
hour before he
arrived I secondguessed
myself.
A was, perhaps,
my only real
friend at the
time - was I
really going
to put that
in jeopardy?
Furthermore,
why do I find
myself falling
in love with any
man who shows
me a single act
of kindness?
I filled an empty bottle of
merlot with water and put
the rose in it, placing it on
my bedside table. “Pretty
rose,” he commented as
soon as he walked in. “Just
because?”
“Just because,” I nodded. I
wonder if things would have
been different if I gave it to
him.
Fire Island
It has often been said that there is no place on Earth like Fire Island.
As a matter of fact, I’ve often said it myself. Fire Island Pines is the perfect
setting for Logo’s new unscripted and provocative docuseries,
“Fire Island,” where a group of young and handsome professional men
spend a remarkable and enlightening summer at a beachfront share
in the gayest playground known to man.
There they search for thrills and romance, and find strength and
camaraderie special to the LBGTQ community.
The series is produced by Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos
(Milojo Productions), who admit to falling in love with
Fire Island the moment they stepped off the ferry, years ago.
Although the trailer seems to be slightly deceiving as to what
Fire Island is truly about, and has gathered some disputed opinions from
Fire Island residents, after meeting the characters at the premiere of
“Drag Race,” I implore potential viewers to give it a chance.
Here’s the premise: Khasan, a dancer who has performed with the
likes of Katy Perry, Rihanna and Beyoncé, invites his friends to
Fire Island in hopes that they can help him decide whether he should
relocate from L.A. to New York to be with his boyfriend.
The friends include Justin, an artist who is seeking inspiration without
losing sight of his boyfriend; Patrick, who is attempting to figure
out his next step after heartbreak; Cheyenne, who while launching
his brand must learn to navigate temptations; Brandon, the quiet one,
who is on the hunt to discover love; and Jorge, who,
after leaving a career as a doctor and a boyfriend behind in
Venezuela, searches for an adventure of a lifetime.
Through my own experience living out the summers on the island,
I am well aware of the different stories each creature in the community
has to offer, but after meeting the cast of “Fire Island,” I quickly came
to discover that these characters are REAL. Their stories and their
personalities are real without the threat of over-production. It is not
very hard to get to know them or to fall in love with them.

PREMIERES THURSDAY,
APRIL 27TH 8PM ET/PT
Which one of you had the most fun doing this series,
and I want you to argue amongst yourselves.
Justin: I think we all had fun for different reasons, and by the
end of it, we all really had a great time.
What did you get out of this experience?
Jorge: This is so amazing. These six guys, who are completely
different from one another—when they clash, there’s the
magic.
Do you love Fire Island?
Jorge: Yeah, if you put Fire Island in context.
I have a house in Cherry Grove.
Patrick: Did you go to Miss Cherry’s this summer?
I did.
Patrick: I was there with my dog. Do you remember?
OMG, I do. That’s you?
Patrick: Yeeesssss! That’s so cool.
What was your best experience there?
Cheyenne: Perspective. I gained a lot of perspective there.
Wait, is that really your real name?
Cheyenne: Yes, it’s my real name. My brother’s name is Scott,
oddly. I gained a lot of perspective on boundaries, respect.
Living in a house with these people taught me a lot about
myself and others, and the way you interact with people.
Also self respect and self love. I got a lot out of that, and a
lot has changed for me since I left the island. It was a very
monumental, life-changing event for me.

PREMIERES THURSDAY,
APRIL 27TH 8PM ET/PT
Justin: I wanna say self worth, agreeing with
Cheyenne, and openness.
Let’s let Brandon talk.
Justin: He’s the quiet one.
Brandon: I say creative inspiration. I take photos, and all the
things I like are very raw, like man, or beauty, or nature. So
going to Fire Island for the first time and seeing one of the
most stunning places I’ve ever seen, it was incredible, full of
inspiration. I used the island in a very creative way.
Did you like The Pines or Cherry Grove better? You better
tell me the truth.
Khasan: My opinion is definitely biased, only because I’ve only
ever stayed in the Pines. But one of my highlights of the summer
was going to Miss Cherry Grove. They know how to put on a
pageant.
Justin: I’m going to go with The Pines, only because I spent
most of my time there. My experience with Cherry Grove
was when I was really late on a train, and it was not the best
circumstance.
Patrick: We definitely spent a lot of time in The Grove though.
We see both sides of it. There are things to celebrate about
both of the towns. That’s what I love about it: how eclectic and
interesting The Grove is, and The Pines has so much unique stuff
to offer too.

Brandon
PREMIERES THURSDAY,
APRIL 27TH 8PM ET/PT
Cheyenne: What’s nice and refreshing is to be able to switch it
up a little bit, depending on whatever mood we’re in. If people
were not in the mood to do the same thing, we’d go over to
Cherry Grove, or stay at The Pines, or stay in the house. It was
really, really, really great. I couldn’t say I liked one better than
the other. I kind of look at it as one whole, big package. The
food was better in The Grove.
Brandon: Nobody eats at The Pines, and there is the ice cream
shop.
Jorge: The Grove has the best pizza, and The Pines has the best
cookies. You have to go to dinner at The Grove and then come
back to The Pines for cookies.
Patrick: I wanna open a coffee shop in The Pines.
Have you ever been to Fire Island before?
Khasan: Jorge actually took me to Fire Island for my first time
three years ago. It’s such a magical place with something for
everyone. You never know what is has in store for you.
Are you moving to New York?
Khasan: Since the show, New York has won my heart over, and I
don’t see myself leaving anytime soon.
What was your favorite time on the island?
Khasan: Pines Party was my favorite time of the summer. Having
Betty Who perform my choreography in front of all of my friends
was such an amazing feeling. When I think of last summer, I think
back to that day of all of us having a blast dancing on the beach,
enjoying our last weekend of summer.

CELEBRITY CORRESPONDENT
BROADWAY ROASTS
MICHAEL MUSTO
"Fork On The Left, Knife In The Back"
"Whoever digs a pit will fall into it, and a
stone will come back on him who starts it
rolling": Proverbs 26:27.
At last it is going
to happen!
The most epic,
monumental, and
earth shattering
quintessence
of Karma is set
to unfold, on
May 22nd, at
8:00PM, at The
Actor's Temple,
(339 West 47th
Street), when a
celebrity cast will
ensemble for
the sole purpose
of roasting the
well deserved,
Michael Musto.
For those who
might not be
familiar, or not
yet frightened
of him, he's been a
writer for the Village Voice, for over 30
years, and currently writes for Out.com, the
New York Times, Paper, and several others.
He is also a commentator on the subject
of pop culture, on CNN, and is a recurring
guest on Logo's Cocktails and Classics.
Besides receiving numerous awards, he was
also named in Out 100 of influential LGBT's.
He has also written several books including,
"Fork in the Left, Knife in the Back", the
theme of the night.
All proceeds from this "event of the
century", will go to benefit The Callen-
Lorde Organization, a clinic where the gay
community can go to address their
concerns. It provides sensitive and quality
health care, community outreach and
education, a sexual health clinic, health
outreach to teens, transgender health,
dental services, and much more at a very
low cost, (212-271-7200).
The distinguished cast of roasters will
include: Rosie O'Donnell, Bruce Vilanch,
Bianca Del Rio, Michael Urie, Orfeh,
Michael Riedel, Johnny Skandros, Luann
De Lesseps, Jinkx Monsoon, Randy Rainbow,
Lucy the Slut, Elizabeth Ann Berg, Crystal
Demure, and Mindy Cohn, all masters at
sharpening the scandalized knife.
Even a convicted killer on death row
deserves to speak their last words before
their demise, so I had the honor of talking
with the honoree, Michael Musto, before
his fate is sealed forever....
Who’s idea was this to
roast you, and do you hate
them?
Daniel DeMello had
contacted me last year,
saying he wanted to throw
this roast, and he and his
boyfriend Nathaniel Nowak,
are organizing this. Daniel is
on top of every detail. I was
immediately taken by the
idea, because first of all, it’s
for a benefit for Callen-Lorde
clinic, which is so vital.
What is the Callen-Lorde
clinic?
It’s a clinic which specializes
in LGBT people who come
with their concerns. It’s
affordable, the service is
wonderful, and I heard such
amazing things about it.
They need all the help they
can get. We are making this
a true benefit. Expenses are
absolutely minimal.

I’ve been to enough bogus
charity events in my life, and I
don’t want my name on some
bullshit where you’re just
ripping people off. So we’re
going to raise some nice
money, the talent is working
for free, and I like the idea of
me reaping what I have sown.
They’re calling it, “Fork On
The Left, Knife In The Back”,
which is the name of one of
my books. I suggested, “He
had it coming”, because I’ve
trashed a lot of people, I’ve
stirred up some ill-will in my
day, and now is a chance for
people to vent back at me....
however, in an affectionate
way. When I grew up, ribbing
each other was a term of
endearment. You only put
somebody down if you cared
about them. Even Bianca
Del Rio, who is one of my
roasters, doesn’t just read
anybody. She has to think
you’re worthy.
Exactly.
Thats how I feel. I’ve
assembled people that I
love, to come and rip me
a new one! Somehow that
translates into more love. At
least that’s what I’m telling
myself. I’m thinking of sitting
there with ear plugs on. I
don’t want my feelings hurt.
I’ll just keep saying, “It’s for
charity, it’s for charity”.
Whom do you fear the
most?
Bianca Del Rio. Come on....I
feel like I got a taste of it
because I was one of the
roasters at Bianca’s roast.
Each roaster, roasted the
whole panel before they
got to Bianca. Then Bianca
came out and roasted the
whole panel, so I already had
a taste of her venom. It was
delicious, but scary.
Your celebrity line-up is
larger and more impressive
than Joan Rivers’ roast.
I wish I had Joan Rivers.
Do you expect them to be
brutal?
I asked around and 90% of
them said yes.
They probably couldn’t wait
to volunteer.
They were lining up,
chomping at the bit.
Maybe you should
have some audience
participation?
It would go on all night.
Rosie O’Donnell said she
would like to start off the
night by talking about the
charity, and I thought that
was lovely and very positive.
Then Bruce Vilanch I asked,
“out of the blue, you
wouldn’t be in New York
to MC this?” Obviously, he
would be the ultimate MC
for such a thing because he’s
the most hilarious joke writer
and performer there is. He’s
a famous comedy writer who
also appeared on Broadway
in “Hairspray”. There is a
great documentary about
him. He’s a legend in this
business. He actually
arranged his schedule
so he’d be in New York
to do this, and that was
astounding.
Oh, he probably
couldn’t wait!
A lot of people are very
excited to attack me.
Jinkx Monsoon is on
board. We have a history, I
was in her video. I’ve always
loved her vaudeville shows.
Orfeh is a friend of mine, so
she really knows me. She’s
not going to be pretending.
Michael Urie really knows
me. He knows how needy,
twisted and boring I am.
He asked, “How far can we
go”? I said, “Well, I don’t
want real hurt feelings”,
but I don’t want to censor
people. I actually wrote
a couple of jokes for
people. I’m writing how old,
hideous, and such a hasbeen
I am. I’m handing it to
them on a plate.
What do you think is your
best flaw...or your worst?
Wow...where do we start?
I’m deeply neurotic, I keep
repeating things in my mind,
sometimes self punishing,
where I blame
myself for things I allegedly
did wrong, even though
I’m basically successful and
made incredible decisions
and did the right thing. I will
never give myself credit for
that. I’ll always kick myself
for the one time I feel that I
miss-stepped.
Tickets at broadwayroast.com

I want to write your
biography.
I do want to write another
book of little snapshots in
words, of different icons over
the years and finally tell the
truth, and go off and die. I
mean it has to be told.
Is this scripted or totally
impromptu?
There will be some jokes
written for certain people
who want that, and everyone
will come with their own
speeches, which they have
prepared. There is also
going to be tremendous
ad-libbing. Bruce Vilanch is
one of the best ad-libbers
in the business and Rosie’s
a genius too. I want them all
to be President. Let’s take
this whole roster and put
them in the White House and
get rid of that orange blob.
They are very funny but they
are all also sensitive people.
We also have videos from
amazing people coming in
like Alan Cumming, Jackie
Hoffman, Doug Wright,
Frankie Grande, Cheyenne
Jackson, Daphne Rubin-
Vega, and John Waters. It’s
astounding, everyone said
that they’d love to.
Out of all these people
who are coming to honor
you, who did you insult the
most?
Well...let’s see...I think Rosie
and I went through a rocky
period in the 90’s, when
I was saying, “come out,
come out, wherever you
are”. But she came out with
a vengeance, and I’m so
proud of her, and everything
she’s accomplished. For her
to go against Trump--and in
my opinion she triumphed,
she definitely hit him with
every word--is something
to applaud. So it’s great to
become friends, and now
we are all celebrating each
other.
I think they’ll be
celebrating you--at least I
hope it’s a celebration.
Rosie, like I said will be
introducing the evening and
talking about the charity,
and that’s really lovely.
Randy Rainbow is hilarious.
He’s going to get up and
do God knows what... He
decimated Kellyanne
Conway, so I guess I’m the
new Kellyanne Conway. He’s
going to make fun of my
alternative facts. We have
Crystal Demure from Kinky
Boots. She’s currently starring
as Lola in Kinky Boots. She’s
glamorous, and exciting, and
very funny.
I heard that Trump wants to
be on the panel.
He actually does. First of all
I’m gay, second of all I’m a
woman, and thirdly I’m an
immigrant. We also have
Michael Riedel, who I’m
terrified of. He’s a gossip
writer for the New York Post.
He’s the co-host of Theater
Talk, which I’m on regularly
and we always banter back
and forth. I’m quaking
because his evil knows no
bounds, in a sort of cute way.
That’s kind of something to
look forward to, I guess, for
the audience.
I hope you don’t walk out
of there in tears.
I’m thinking by the end of it,
I’ll be a basket case. But I will
get the last word, because
I’m writing a speech for
myself, and then I’m going
to rip them all a new one.
So they better watch what
they say. I’m ending it with
that, just like Bianca did
with hers. Basically Playbill
is providing a program for
the evening, and we’re
selling ads to benefit the
charity. Daniel has been just
on top of everything. He’s
astounded that I’ve been
immersed in every little
detail as well, because I
wanted to be hands-on with
this. I want it to be good. I
didn’t want to put my name
on some half assed thing.
I’ve been helping gathering
up the talent, and coming
up with the material and the
promotion as well. A lot of
people have been waiting for
this for many, many years.
For sure! Unfortunately I’ll
be in London, and there is
only one man I’d miss this
for.
Oh dam, I knew it. I’m always
playing second fiddle to
Adam Ant.
It’s really cool that you
volunteered for this.
Well I was inspired by the
idea. I have a good sense of
humor. I dish it out and I can
take it. It’s for a good cause.
It’s a great lineup. I have
a feeling it’s going to sell
out very quickly. And that’s
another dis someone can say
about me: “Musto, you’re a
sellout!”
Brendon
McDonall
What has your experience
been like as a gay man in
the film industry?
Pretty good, to be honest.
I’m in the infancy of my
film career. I was a theatre
director professionally
for 13 years and an actor
before I went back and
did postgraduate study
at the Australian Film,
Television and Radio
School—that’s the national
film school. They very
much encourage your
own personal, authorial
voice, and the stories I was
telling at that stage in my
screen career were deeply
personal and project my
life as a gay man. I never
really had a moment where
that was questioned, or
I didn’t really feel there
were any obstacles. Both
queer film festivals and
mainstream festivals have
been very responsive to
the four, five films I put
out there in circulation. I
mean, obviously, on film
sets things can be very
“blokey,” but I’m yet to
make my first feature, so all
of the films that I’ve made I
curated my own crew.
Was there a particular
event or time that
you recognized that
filmmaking was not just a
hobby, but that it would
be something you would
want to pursue as a
career?
I’ve been a film
buff since I was a
kid. I first fell in love with
“E.T.,” which was my first
transcendent cinema
experience. I think I was
six, and I was traumatized
by the film, and it stuck
with me. I’ve always been
a total empath, so films
with a deeply emotional
dimension engaged me as
a kid. But I also happened
to fall in love with the film
“Jaws,” and I became
obsessed with “Jaws.” I
was terrified of it. I grew
up on the beach and had
a phobia of the waters
for years afterwards. But
the magic of the movies
really hit me, because I just
could not work out how
they got those images on
the screen. So, I became
obsessed with peeling
back the kind of “see the
wizard behind the curtain.”
In the movies, there is a
real wizard. So it became
an obsession. It stayed with
me.
Having a camera that’s
available to you in the ‘80s
or the ‘90s was just out of
the question. My family
didn’t have the money, and
we had no way to afford a
camera. Instead, there was
a very vibrant youth theatre
company near where I
grew up on the south
coast of New South Wales
in Australia. I enrolled
in drama classes, and
suddenly I was up on this
theatre trajectory. [At] the
age of 17, 18, that company
gave me an internship,
basically, to be the artistic
director of the youth
theatre wing. I stayed there
for three years and directed
30-something productions
and learned how to make
theatre, learned how to tell
stories and learned how to
communicate with actors
and conceive a vision.
It was an unforgettable
experience, and, by the
age of 20, I thought I better
go, because I didn’t have
a qualification, because
I was teaching without a
qualification. I went and
enrolled in one of the
national drama schools
here in Australia and
graduated as an actor, but
then continued to direct
theatre and act for 12, 13
years.
By the end of that time, I
became a little disillusioned
with theatre. I can’t quite
articulate why. I think there’s
a lot of politics, and I found
it to be inward looking.
