Local EFF member 

Xolisa Runeli 

approached Talk of the 

Town with copies of 

invoices and 

quotations, signed off 

by municipal officials 

for the hire of services 

and equipment. 

They indicate 

payment of substantial 

amounts which Runeli 

claims were against 

tenders and quotations 

never advertised, but 

simply awarded to 

companies with an 

association with 

municipal officials. 

Although Runeli 

could not identify the 

officials responsible for 

the impropriety, he 

added that the Hawks 

were currently 

investigating cases of 

irregular expenditure. 

The municipality has 

confirmed that 

investigations, initiated 

by municipal manager 

Rolly Dumezweni, are 

currently under way 

and a report should be 

ready shortly. 

“This work was never 

adver tised,” said 

Runeli, pointing to one 

of the invoices, signed 

off by officials and 

ready for payment. 

The items listed were 

TLBs, tipper trucks and 

road rollers that the 

municipality has hired, 

presumably to fix roads 

in the area. 

“But these tenders 

were never advertised, 

so most people from 

the area had no 

opportunity to put in 

q u ot at i o n s , ” he said. 

These allegations are 

just the latest in a long 

list of suspected 

improprieties by 

municipal officials. 

For the last few 

years, residents of 

Kenton-on-Sea’s 

township, 

Ekuphumleni, have 

complained, among 

other issues, that 

tenders have been 

awarded to companies 

outside of the area 

when locals could offer 

the same service but 

were never given the 

oppor tunit y. 

They also claim that 

an unemployment 

database always 

favours politicallyconnected 

people. 

Runeli is asking for 

transparency, and 

wants the municipality 

to explain why certain 

companies seem to be 

managed by the same 

people. 

Runeli pointed out 

two invoices from two 

different companies 

that have the same 

address.

supplying a tipper 

truck to the 

municipality, and 

Mkhonto Security and 

Arm Response 

Services, who also 

quoted for the same 

tipper truck, share the 

same address.

Stamping out crime Sad state of monuments 

PORT Alfred enjoyed a rather quiet 

week, with very few serious crime 

incidents reported to the Multi 

Security control room between 

February 7 to 14. 

The majority of incidents reported 

were instances of people behaving 

suspiciously, and suspicious activity 

in residential areas. 

Last week on Tuesday, the Multi 

Security control room received an 

alarm activation call from a 

residence in Riversdale Drive. 

Multi Security reaction officers 

attended the scene and noticed t h at 

putty had been removed from a 

window frame. The control room 

informed the SAPS to sign out a key 

to the premises but noted that 

nothing was stolen. 

Later that day, the control room 

received a call from a client in Beach 

Crescent, who reported a break-in. 

The suspect gained entry by 

bending a security gate and kicking 

in the back door. 

Numerous items including a 

PlayStation, laptop and a hard drive 

were stolen. 

Last Friday morning, a client in 

Colgate Road reported a suspect in 

her bedroom.

entry was gained at a front w i n d o w, 

which had been left open. 

The suspect took three iPads, a 

handbag and an undisclosed amount 

of cash. The client reported that the 

suspect fled in a white minivan. 

In the early hours of Saturday 

morning, the SAPS were requested at 

Highway Motors, Albany Road, after 

a Multi Security reaction officer 

reported a customer who had 

become violent. 

The customer wanted his puncture 

fixed but did not have the money to 

pay for it and got angry with the 

petrol attendant when he refused. 

On Monday morning, the Multi 

Security control room received a call 

about a theft at Port Alfred Service 

Centre in Hallier Street. Reaction 

officers reported that the suspect 

had stolen a petrol pump from a 

vehicle parked on the premises. 

Later that evening, at the Ndlambe 

dumpsite, an Areo Park guard 

reported that men were trying to take 

roof sheets off a building.

ONCERNS have been 

raised over vandalised 

and dilapidated 

monuments in Nemato. 

The matter was brought to 

Tot T ’s attention by Ward 8 

resident Mahoy Nkontso, who 

once chaired the Nemato 

Community Policing Forum. 

Nkontso first showed us a 

collapsed monument in 

Gangca Street, in a field 

across the road from some 

houses. 

The headstone had to be 

lifted to read the inscription. It 

was erected in honour of 

forefathers of the community. 

He said the monument was 

erected in about 1989, 

recalling that it was before 

Nelson Mandela was released 

from prison. 

“The struggle blessed the 

monument,” Nkontso said. 

We then moved on to a 

more recently erected 

monument at Heroes Acre at 

the entrance to Nemato.

The monument was 

originally protected by a 

palisade fence, which is now 

missing pieces, enabling stray 

cattle to graze in the 

monument area. 

In addition, the marble 

plaque commemorating the 

unveiling has been broken off 

and lies shattered in several 

pieces. 

Nkontso has another 

quibble about the monument, 

one that he said had bothered 

him for years. 

“Of the six names, five are 

of people who were shot by 

apartheid security forces, but 

one name, Xolile Maneli, is a 

man who was necklaced by 

his comrades.” 

Nkontso said he did not 

mind if the monument was 

meant to be inclusive of 

people who lost their lives on 

both sides of the struggle, 

“but if it is also for people who 

were necklaced shouldn’t 

there be more names there?” 

Nkontso said his credentials 

include having been a marshal 

for the ANC, a member of the 

SA Youth Congress, then the 

ANC Youth League, and 

serving on the executive in 

ANC branches. 

In response to TotT’s 

queries, municipal spokesman

Cecil Mbolekwa said: “The 

monuments are a critical part 

of our community. 

“The municipality, during

As for the list of names on 

the monument and how they 

were selected, Mbolekwa said 

he still needed a response 

from political leaders.

LOCAL potter and ceramics artist Richard Pullen 

will be presenting his first workshop at the 

Johannesburg Clay Festival taking place in the 

City of Gold next month. 

Pottery has formed an integral part of human 

civilisation since the dawn of time with 

archaeologists tracing human history through 

artefacts found in excavation – as surely as 

archaeologists in the future will remember us from 

what we leave behind. 

Pullen, who’s been a professional potter for 

almost 20 years, shared his recipe for creating his 

ceramic artworks. After shaping his ceramics, he 

places them either in an electric kiln, or a large 

metal drum of smoke fuelled by combustible 

materials. He will be sharing these processes in 

greater depth at the festival. 

“It’s the first time I have been invited to present 

a workshop,” Pullen said. “I will be presenting two 

workshops. One will be a practical demonstration 

of my way of smoke-firing; and the other will be a 

practical demonstration on how I make my 

award-winning Black and White series.” 

Even though this is his first workshop at the 

Johannesburg Clay Festival, Pullen is no stranger 

to art exhibitions where his work is greatly 

celebrated – having exhibited at the Grahamstown 

National Arts Festival every year since 1998. 

“I work in many different styles and techniques,” 

Pullen said. 

“The joy and excitement of the smoke-firing 

technique is that the colours and effects are 

largely unexpected and random but can be 

influenced by the materials and conditions 

decided upon when smoke-firing. This romantic 

firing technique creates absolutely individual 

effects on each piece. 

“Once made, the still drying vessels are 

burnished to give a smooth, shiny finish and then 

bisqued to 900°C. This leaves the body porous and 

ready to accept the smoke-firing’s effects. The 

vessels are then bedded in a mixture of sawdust, 

seaweed, wood and newspaper – possibly with a 

sprinkling of salt and copper. The combustible 

materials are then lit which smolders and burns 

for a number of hours. 

“The swirls and shades of colour are entirely 

determined by the path of the flames and smoke 

over the porous vessels,” Pullen said. 

“The pots are then rinsed and waxed to a gloss.”

business dedicated 

to delivering 

sustainable HIV 

solutions, motivated 

by the desire to 

make a tangible 

difference in the 

fight against the 

pandemic. 

They deal with 

issues as intimate 

as sexuality, 

wellness, illness and 

even death 

counselling. 

Tele said about 

100 men are 

currently working on 

a strip of the R72 

near town.

least 100 guys 

showed up. These 

guys are constantly 

working on the 

roads and have a 

different type of life. 

“They move 

around a lot and 

don’t often have 

access to specific

heritage 

IN RECENT years there has been a lot of 

angst about monuments in South Africa, 

particularly those erected in the colonial 

and apartheid eras. 

Statues have been defaced with paint 

and splattered with faeces, broken and 

toppled, set on fire, or removed by the 

authorities to avoid such a fate as well as 

placate protestors. 

Such was the case with the statue of 

Cecil John Rhodes at the University of Cape 

To w n . 

Often politically-driven, sometimes the 

object of rage and vandalism offers the 

faintest reason for offence. Such was the 

case with the Horse Memorial in Port 

Elizabeth, dedicated to the horses killed 

during the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902. It 

was broken – and partially toppled – under 

cover of darkness by members of the EFF 

two years ago. 

There have also been incidents where 

bronze statues were pillaged by scrap metal 

thieves. The original bronze plaques around 

the Toposcope in Bathurst were apparently 

stolen for this purpose. But when plastic 

ones were made to replace the missing 

bronze plaques, each one commemorating 

an 1820 Settler family and the direction in 

which they dispersed, these too were ripped 

of f. 

Sometimes the vandalism appears to be 

for no other reason than hooligans getting 

their jollies from destroying something. 

Cemeteries are a favourite target. 

Two years ago, vandals struck at the old 

Settler Methodist Church cemetery on the 

East Bank, toppling tombstones and 

shattering stone and glass vases. 

Among the headstones damaged was 

that of Port Alfred’s first black mayor, Eric 

Jauka, which fuelled a rumour that the 

vandalism was racially or politically 

motivated. But a walk through the 

graveyard revealed the destruction was 

rampant and indiscriminate, with about 20 

graves in the older, “Set tler” section of the 

cemetery having been vandalised, as well 

as 28 graves in the newer section of the 

cemetery in which mainly black people are 

buried. 

This week we were shown yet another 

example of vandalism – of two monuments 

in Nemato, one in a prominent position at 

the entrance to the township and one in 

more humble circumstances deeper in 

Ward 8. The older one, to honour 

forefathers, is especially in bad condition, 

which may be a combination of vandalism 

and neglect. 

It is not known how long the monuments 

have been in a state of disrepair, but one 

resident cared enough to bring it to TotT’s 

at tention. 

We hope the municipality has the means 

and will to restore and safeguard these 

monuments, as well as other local 

monuments which reflect the diversity of 

our shared history and culture.

To be a grandparent 

is such a joy and a 

privilege as well. 

One of the greatest 

gifts we can give to 

our children and 

grandchildren is to 

set them an example 

to follow. 

The dedication of 

our lives to Christ 

does have an effect 

even upon our 

posterity, according to 

Psalm 103:17, 18. 

It says, “But from 

everlasting to 

everlasting, the Lord’s 

love is with those who 

fear him, and his 

righteousness with 

their children’s 

children – with those 

who keep his 

covenant and 

remember to obey his 

precepts.” 

Although the 

resultant blessing is a 

reality, have you ever 

considered that God 

has no 

grandchildren? 

Although our parents 

may have served the 

Lord, it does not 

automatically make 

us His children or 

“grandchildren”. 

Each individual 

person has to commit 

his/her life to Christ 

in order to become a 

child of God. Only 

then do we have that 

right and privilege. 

John 1:12 says, “Yet to 

all who received him, 

to those who believed 

in his name, he gave 

the right to become 

children of God.” 

What a wonderful 

thought to know that 

the Creator of heaven 

and earth; the One 

who upholds all 

things by the word of 

His power, is our 

Heavenly Father! The 

love He has for us far 

outweighs the love 

we have for our 

fa m i l y. 

To rest in the 

knowledge of the 

Fat h e r ’s love each day 

is priceless. We are 

not exempt from

valleys, but we are 

guaranteed of His

Catch up with what’s happening on the PA business front 

STAFF VALUED FOR THEIR LOYALTY 

IN MY previous column a fortnight 

ago, I discussed the need for 

families to work according to a 

strict budget. 

The purpose of a monthly 

budget is to learn how to have full 

control over our expenditure. 

A budget will certainly be of 

great value to curb unnecessary 

expenditure and to gradually help 

us to rid ourselves of the “noose” 

of excessive debt around our 

necks. 

Firstly, teach yourself to cut 

down on non-essential expenses. 

Make a list of all non-essential 

expenses and start eliminating 

everything that you are willing to 

give up, however small the savings 

amount might sound. 

Small savings are certain to add 

up to big savings sooner than you 

could imagine. 

The worst burden any family can 

have is to be forced to live from 

pay cheque to pay cheque. 

Our main objective is to break 

out of this unhappy pattern as 

soon as possible. 

Referring back to the previous 

column, it is essential to involve all 

members of the household. 

A combined effort will certainly 

ensure very positive results sooner 

than we might realise. 

The enthusiasm of the junior 

partners in the family is sure to 

contribute more than one would 

think. 

It is important to break down all 

debts into smaller “bite-sized” 

pieces and to get rid of these, one 

chunk at a time. 

It remains vitally important to 

set yourself targets, and once 

reached, please reward the entire 

family with a treat. 

This will certainly ensure that 

even the younger members 

become more and more 

enthusiastic to get the family to 

become completely debt-free. If 

one could sum up the total 

purpose of this exercise, it would 

be to “stop worrying and start 

living”. 

Imagine the feeling of being 

absolutely debt-free. 

To reach this, once each debt is 

fully settled, get rid of that store 

card or credit card and remain on 

a cash basis. 

The absolute pleasure and peace 

of mind will most certainly be 

extremely rewarding. 

My wish to you and your family 

is that you will shortly experience 

that wonderful burden-free feeling 

of being rid of debt. 

As your monthly payments of, 

especially, non-essential debt 

starts to disappear, seriously 

consider a retirement savings plan 

to enable you to subsidise your 

company pension and to ensure a 

worry-free retirement. 

I can once again assure you that 

on retirement you will certainly 

thank yourself for following these 

few words of encouragement.

“These days no one knows 

what they are eating,” said Kooy, 

who used to work in the 

Stenden kitchens. 

Now his company, Dutch 

Cuisine, handles Stenden’s food 

education worldwide. He is also 

the author of a book, Food at 

Stenden. 

“Who actually reads about 

food? Few people actually know 

what they are consuming. Today

Next is Health: Kooy wants us

vegetables on its head. “Why do 

we eat so much meat? Why not 

eat vegetables as the main part 

of the meal and supplement 

with a little fish or beef, for 

example? We should treat 

vegetables with the same 

respect as we do meat, take 

care and be imaginative in the 

way in which we prepare and 

serve them.” 

Nature comes next: In terms 

of food products, Kooy said we 

ate a lot of rubbish in our 

mass-produced, non-local food. 

“We should be eating natural, 

pure ingredients. We should buy 

the best we can afford.” 

Quality is the fourth principle: 

Kooy is a big believer in organic 

foods. “The term ‘eco’ does not 

have a good reputation. 

Consumers believe it is too 

expensive and, in many cases, it 

is. However, what is so healthy 

about eating food that has been 

forced-grown and drowned in 

chemical pesticides. Perhaps, 

rather than using ‘eco’ on such 

foods, we should make 

non-eco-friendly food producers 

write ‘non-ecologically 

produced’ on their labelling, 

along with a poison sign.” 

The last principle is profit: In 

terms of the entire philosophy, 

profit is an important factor, but 

Kooy believes there is a way to 

quantify the benefits. 

“If you are serving meals with 

more vegetables than meat, how 

can organic, healthy meals be 

more expensive?” 

Kooy, who returned home to 

Holland on Tuesday, trained the 

chefs and students in his 

techniques and showed them 

that his method of cooking was

industry was the main culprit 

responsible for our bad eating 

habits. Yet, if we could adapt 

our food culture by adhering to 

his five simple principles, we 

can all be healthier and reduce 

incidents of illness that befall us

IT’S another fairly quiet weekend. Of the events open 

to the general public, let’s start with El-evation, an 

eight-piece band that will play songs from the past as 

well as some modern ones. The show starts at 8pm at 

the Kenton Community Hall. 

For those spiritually-minded folk, the Grace and Truth 

Church on Albany Road is holding a Revival Meeting 

with Curry Blake of John G Lake Ministries on Friday 

and Johan van Rensburg. 

WITH generous donations from pineapple farmers, 

the Bathurst Agricultural Museum is happy to hold its 

new Pineapple Shed roof-wetting this weekend. The 

shed will allow many of the agricultural antiquities, 

currently outdoors, to be housed and protected 

against weather erosion. Well done to the farmers for 

preserving our local heritage. 

ON the local front, if you ever walk up the steps from 

Stocks Avenue to the R72 you may have noticed Port 

Alfred’s new rubbish dump that’s been developing. 

Each day the pile grows; from plastic bags filled with 

household rubbish to an old-style turntable. Weeks 

ago there was a broken laptop and a badly beaten 

hard drive among the refuse, perhaps plunder from a 

robbery, and on Wednesday morning, about 20 empty 

wine bottles sat atop the rancid mess. Not only is this 

an eyesore (particularly since municipal workers have 

cut down the bush that surrounds the steps), but it is 

a health hazard. Come on municipality and police, 

please do something to clean up the mess and 

prevent it from happening in the future. 

TALK of the Town and MyPond Hotel held its popular 

Quiz Night in aid of the Port Alfred Soup Kitchen last 

Thursday, raising R8050 for the charity. Well done to 

quizmaster Jon Houzet who tailored the questions to 

his audience and carried the entire evening with 

aplomb. Thanks also to scoremaster Bryan Smith who 

made sure the points were recorded accurately. Keep

next exciting and fun quiz. 

SONA 2017 was another gigantic waste of time, with 

major opposition parties having either left or been 

physically ejected from the house. This is how the 

world sees South Africa, as a group of unruly 

despoilers. This is not the image we need to project if 

we are to encourage foreign investment in order to 

grow our industries and create jobs. There are 

growing concerns the ANC is divided into factions, 

and the upcoming leadership battle could lead to the 

ruling party being broken apart. The question is,

should the ANC fall, which party is ready, in terms of 

leadership, knowledge and experience, to take over? 

FINANCE minister, Pravin Gordhan, will present his 

2017 budget next Wednesday, and has few options to 

relieve the massive headache the budget will no 

doubt cause. Currently South Africa is in a very 

vulnerable position financially, with no money in the 

coffers to fund many of its promised projects, 

including subsidising poorer students who cannot 

afford tertiary education. Over-committed and bruised 

following his run-in with the Hawks and National 

Prosecuting Authority, Gordhan must now consider 

innovative ways of raising money. One of his options 

is to raise VAT rates, but this will have a direct impact 

on the poor, something the minister has said he is 

loath to do. There is bound to be an increase in 

so-called “sin” taxes, those levied on alcohol and 

tobacco products, but fingers crossed that only those 

who can afford it are punished with higher personal 

and luxury taxes.

sure, additional tax will be levied on petroleum 

products. Internationally, the price of oil seems to 

have settled in the $55 to $56 band, for the time 

being at least, as oil fields cut down on production to 

keep the price at that level, or even escalate it in the 

near future. With last year’s figures in brackets to 

compare against, and at the time of going to press, 

the rand was trading at R13.02 to the dollar (R15.72), 

R16.22 to the pound (R22.50) and R13.74 to the Euro 

(R17.49). Gold was trading at $1226.20 per fine ounce 

($1 202.40), platinum at $1002.70/oz ($9325.80) with 

Brent crude oil at $55.97 ($32.18) per barrel.

Hospital plan v medical aid

YOUR health is your most 

important asset and 

therefore one of the three 

primary focus areas of any 

financial portfolio, is medical 

aid. 

Medical cover is crucial in 

the event of an illness, 

operation or any unforeseen 

emergencies. The options for 

you and your family are 

either a hospital plan or a 

medical aid. A hospital plan 

is an essential form of 

medical cover and most 

plans will cover you in the 

event of an accident or an 

event like an unplanned 

surgery. People are often 

able to pay for a doctor’s 

visit or some medication 

from the pharmacy, however 

major surgery could cripple 

you and your family 

financially if you do not have 

hospital cover in place. 

If you have a hospital plan 

only, you are then liable for 

all your day-to-day expenses, 

as well as cover for the 26 

PMB (prescribed minimum 

benefits) chronic conditions. 

Another option available is 

medical aid, which 

essentially covers members 

for in and out of hospital 

cover, doctors and medical 

issues. Naturally medical aid 

premiums are considerably 

higher. Important questions 

to ask when choosing a 

medical aid: 

ý What level of cover do I 

require? 

ý How much can I afford 

per month? 

ý Am I looking for cover 

for my entire family? 

ý Do I plan on having 

surgery in the near future? 

It is important to talk to 

your medical aid broker so 

that they can assist you with 

the best solution for your 

needs. With either a medical 

aid or a hospital plan, in 

most cases, you won’t have 

to pay any additional fees for 

most procedures. It is, 

however, important to make 

sure that you are aware of 

the procedures that you are 

covered for, as there can 

sometimes be co-payments. 

Most hospital and medical 

aid plans provide cover at a 

set medical tariff rate for 

in-hospital procedures, 

however if the hospital 

charges at a higher rate, 

there could easily be a 

co-payment. This is where 

gap cover plays an important 

role as it can cover that 

Medical Aid “gaps” or 

shortfall. Over the past few 

years, because of medical 

inflation, we have seen a 

massive increase in clients 

requesting gap cover as 

premiums are generally very 

cost effective and can be 

added to almost any medical 

aid. In essence, gap cover 

enables you to insure 

yourself and your family for 

up to 500% of the in-hospital 

medical scheme tariff as well 

as cover for deductibles or 

co-payments for procedures

INTERNATIONAL BONDS: A visiting group of Rotarians from Oregon, 

US, together with members of Kenton Rotary who hosted them 

recently 

US Rotarians hosted 

by Kenton Rotary 

THE Rotary Club of Kenton-on-Sea 

recently hosted 12 Americans on a 

Rotary Friendship Exchange (RFE) 

programme. 

The group of Americans came 

from several different clubs in 

Oregon, US, known as Rotary 

District 5110. 

During their stay they went on a 

trip up the tidal Bushman’s River, 

visited nearby Sibuya Game 

Reserve, and had the opportunity to 

meet the local InterAct Club and 

some of the pre-primary school 

teachers at a workshop run by the 

Club’s Youth Service committee, 

Sandi Peter. 

The American team leader 

donated $200 (R2606) to Peter for 

the club’s youth projects. Their 

five-day stay culminated in an 

evening meeting with members of 

Kenton Rotary, Port Alfred Rotary 

and the Rotary Club of Grahamstown 

Sunset, where banners were 

exchanged and presentations made 

by each of the RFE visitors. 

“They made every effort to 

promote their beautiful part of the 

US to tempt us to take up their offer 

of a return RFE,” Rotary public relations 

officer Pippa Steele-Gray said. 

This offer is open to all Rotarians 

in District 9370 and will probably 

take place in October of this year. 

After leaving Kenton, the visiting 

Americans spent a night in the 

Addo Elephant National Park, then 

were hosted by past district 

governor Kevin Dersley in Port 

Elizabeth for several nights. They 

spent a night at Storms River before 

moving on to Cape Town where the 

Rotary Club of Newlands is hosting 

them for the rest of their three-week 

st ay. 

“Speaking on behalf of our club 

and district governor Bruce 

[Steele-Gray], I can only recommend 

most highly this unique aspect of 

Rotary which allows its members to 

meet and share in the lives of 

people from all over the world. 

“What better way to spread 

understanding, peace and 

goodwill,” Steele-Gray said.

REAL COURAGE: The SA National Blood Service 

challenged Port Alfred High School to donate 

24 pints of blood and were thrilled to receive 

27 on February 1, of which 16 pints were 

provided by first-time donors. In recognition,

with this long-awaited follow-on 

to 2012’s Resident Evil: 

Ret ribution. 

Milla Jovovich is back as 

Alice, the genetically engineered 

warrior who faces down hordes 

of the undead and horrifying 

mutations caused by the T-virus, 

which killed most people on the 

planet. 

It all started in an 

underground genetic research 

facility run by the nefarious 

Umbrella Corporation in Raccoon 

City, where Alice first awakened 

after the T-virus was released by 

a seeming lab accident. 

Teaming up with 

ever-dwindling groups of 

survivors, Alice fought her way 

across the US and around the 

world, seeking sanctuary and 

battling the Umbrella 

Corporation who used the global 

plague to further its own 

ambitions, creating more 

abominations to wipe out the 

remnant of humanity. 

In this final chapter, the action 

heads back to Raccoon City. 

Audiences may remember Alice 

and her comrades making a last 

stand in Washington DC at the 

end of Ret ribution, reluctantly 

teaming up with her 

sunglasses-wearing arch-foe 

Albert Wesker (Shawn Roberts), 

or one of his clones. 

Surprise, surprise, she was 

betrayed. She wakes up in the 

rubble of the Capitol and soon 

has to fight a flying nasty. 

Satellites are tracking Alice’s 

movements and she once again 

encounters artificial intelligence 

the Red Queen (Ever Gabo 

Anderson), who tells her to go to 

Raccoon City for humanity’s 

sake, and where a great 

revelation awaits.

What’s hot or not at the box office 

The revelation turns out to be 

a bit of a no-brainer, but there 

are enough fights, explosions, 

terrifying monsters and dramatic 

escapes along the way to keep 

things interesting. 

Alice is taken hostage by 

another man she thought she 

had killed, Dr Alexander Isaacs 

(Iain Glen), one of the 

masterminds of the Umbrella 

Corporation. Following the 

trusted formula of: fight, escape, 

team up with another small band 

of survivors; Alice is reunited 

with an old friend Claire Redfield 

(Ali Larter). 

Of course we can expect their 

ranks to be thinned by various 

threats before Alice gets to the 

source and a final showdown 

with Wesker and Isaacs. Based 

on a video game, there are parts 

that really feel like a video game. 

This may be called the final 

chapter, and there was a lot of 

satisfying resolution, but it was 

open-ended enough to leave 

room for a sequel. Jovovich still 

looks good.

LAST Friday saw the annual Dads, Lads and Lasses 

camp taking place at El Shaddai Christian 

A c a d e m y. 

The camp is an opportunity for fathers to spend 

some quality time with their children in a natural 

environment. Some dads even took some children 

whose fathers were absent or unavailable so that 

they did not miss out on this fun experience. 

Some children had never experienced pitching a

tent and a lot of fun was had trying to manipulate 

guide lines and poles in strong winds. Swimming,

Dads had to cook for themselves by braaing 

their own suppers. Some dads were far more 

organised than others but that didn’t matter in the 

least as it was all about bonding with their 

children and having a good time.

students registered for their first year of study at Rhodes, and 

one parent described the registration process as well organised

THE NEXT PHASE OF THEIR LIVES 

There was a steady stream of would-be 

Rhodes University students and their 

parents in Eden Grove complex last 

weekend as they did the necessary to 

register for the year and years of study 

ahead. The exact number of first-years 

was not known at the time of writing, 

but is believed to be in excess of 1500. 

Overseeing the registration process 

was the university’s registrar Dr Stephen 

Fourie assisted by Natalie Ripley of the 

information and technology division and 

her staff – they were on standby in the 

event of glitches or computer 

breakdowns. 

A Johannesburg father said he was 

impressed at how smoothly the process 

had gone, mentioning he had been to a 

couple of other universities’ regist ration 

proceedings. 

Outside the building, Absa Bank 

staffers manned a table offering student 

loans and banking services to students 

embarking on the next phase of their 

lives. They were even churning out bags 

of popcorn from a fancy machine and 

handed them out to new students. 

NARROW DEFEAT FOR RHODIANS 

Despite going down by the narrow 

margin of 12-16 to Tshwane University of 

Technology in Pretoria last week, the 

Rhodes University First XV players, led 

by Jono Braans, acquitted themselves 

well in their debut fixture in the national 

Varsity Shield rugby competition. In fact, 

the visitors from Grahamstown led their 

hosts for much of the match, only falling 

behind in the final few minutes. 

Among those in the squad who 

travelled to Pretoria last week were 

several who attended Grahamstown 

schools before entering Rhodes – Jono 

Braans (captain, Kingswood College), 

Uzu Nyanda (Graeme College), 

Lukhanyo Tshongweni (Graeme), Kieran 

Skae (St Andrew’s College), Yalusa

Have you noticed? A couple of 

thunderstorms, accompanied by rain, 

and Grahamstown’s streets have really 

gone to pot with many new potholes and 

existing ones grown in size overnight! 

GRAEME BATSMEN SHINE 

Despite putting up the rather good score 

of 270 for 4 off 54 overs, with a century 

by Romario Fritz and a near-century by 

Mark Amm, Graeme College had to 

settle for a draw with Alexander Road 

High in their First XI cricket clash in 

Grahamstown on Saturday. Fritz scored 

his maiden 1st team century with a 

well-struck 107, while Amm hit 93 – they 

shared in a fourth-wicket partnership of 

177 runs. 

Alexander Road was in early trouble 

with 15 runs on the board and three 

wickets down, before rain and lightning 

put paid to proceedings for the day. The 

Graeme bowlers were keen to get the 

job finished but it was not to be. Result 

– match drawn. 

NEW HEAD INDUCTED 

At a service in Memory Hall last week, 

the Bishop of Grahamstown, the Right 

Reverend Ebenezer Ntlali, inducted 

Brendan Brady as the 11th headmaster of 

St Andrew’s Prep. 

DOWN MEMORY LANE 

The “Grahamstown 1964 Directory” 

contained upwards of 30 full-page and 

half-page advertisements, and over the 

next few weeks we’ll take a look at the 

businesses in the hope the stories will 

bring back some memories of 

“Grahamstown of Olde”. Not too old, 

mind you – we’ll stick to the ’60s and 

’70 s .

their freshly-baked sausage rolls were 

pretty good too, I remember. Remind 

me, please – who of the Dicks family 

owned the business?

LIBRARY TAKING SHAPE 

According to a message posted on 

Facebook, two Makana councillors 

visited the public library in Hill Street 

last week to view the progress being 

made following its renovation and 

refurbishment. Their sentiment was that 

the library could be open by month’s 

end. 

A couple of days later, I visited the 

premises but the manager was in a 

meeting. However, volunteers were busy 

placing books in shelves, there were 

new fixtures and fittings, new flooring, 

and generally the downstairs rooms had 

a ‘new’ feel to it. Roll on re-opening day! 

A ROUGH WALK 

The pavement in front of Sans Souci 

Flats in Huntley Street (near its 

intersection with Hill Street) was dug up 

by the municipality (or its contractor) 

some time ago and is a mess, posing a 

danger to pedestrians. Wonder when the 

municipality (or its contractor) intends 

repairing it. 

SCIFEST TOURS SCIENCE 

Scifest Africa celebrates its 21st 

anniversary from March 8 to 14, and this 

year’s theme is “Tour de Science”, 

encouraging exhibitors and presenters 

to embark on a journey that explores the 

milestones, accomplishments,

It was quite an occasion in Pretoria last 

week when the Rhodes University First 

XV strode onto the field for their 

inaugural appearance in the Varsity 

Shield rugby competition. The team was

their second fixture in the competition

Rhodes’s entry into the Varsity Shield 

competition has been five years in the 

making, and is a ‘big deal’ on campus. 

Vice-Chancellor Dr Sizwe Mabizela even 

hosted a lunch for players and officials 

prior to their departure for Pretoria last 

week. 

This reminds me of the Saturday 

afternoon in 1993 when Rhodes 1sts 

defeated their University of Port 

Elizabeth (as it was known then) 

counterparts on Great field. The captain 

of the home side was Brendan Grant, 

now headmaster of Queen’s College, 

and the coach was New Zealander Greg 

Doolan. 

It was quite an occasion, that 

memorable win, and Rhodes students 

and players were still on Great field 40 

minutes after the game, cheering, 

singing and celebrating as only 

Rhodians can do! Yes, it was quite an 

occasion.

Rhodes University has announced the 

appointment of Luzoko Jacobs as the 

new director of communications and 

advancement. A former parliamentary 

spokesman, Jacobs has more than 20 

years of experience in the 

communications field. 

LOCAL FLAVOUR TO TOURNEY 

Three Grahamstown teams will be 

among the 17 taking part in the 2017 

Pineapple cricket tournament being 

contested on grounds in and around 

Port Alfred from March 4 to 11. They are 

Grahamstown Xl, Rhodes University and 

Rhodes Shrews. In addition, various 

other teams, like Salem, Southwell and 

Manley Flats, will have 

Grahamstown players in 

their ranks.

With first-year students 

settling in on the Rhodes 

University campus, and 

returning students 

descending on the campus 

this weekend, I thought I’d 

take readers’ minds back 

three and more decades. 

Who remembers Rhodes 

Rag? Those were the days 

when Rhodes students 

spent a Friday night 

building floats on the load 

bodies of trucks, to a 

particular theme, in 

readiness for the next day’s 

Rag procession. 

Recently I spoke to an 

Old Rhodian about Rag, 

and he said Rag was “quite 

an occasion” each year. 

Students purchased plenty 

of wood, chicken wire, 

crinkle paper, paint and 

cardboard, and spent the Friday night 

building floats in parking lots adjacent 

to residences. Construction was an 

all-night affair, and they still had enough 

energy to take to the streets on the 

Saturday morning for their tin-shaking 

exploits through the CBD, collecting 

money for charity and showing off their 

handiwork. 

The leading float carried the Rag 

Queen and her two Rag Princesses, and 

on one occasion the “royalt y” drove in 

an open-top car. Great fun was had by 

all, students painted themselves all 

colours of the rainbow, wore outlandish 

clothing, sold Rag magazines to locals, 

and some students even took to 

throwing washing powder into the 

Church Square fountain one year, 

causing one big froth. 

Why then, I asked this former Rhodes 

student, did Rhodes Rag cease to exist? 

“Lack of finance,” was his reply.

SYMCOX AT THE COAST 

Former Test and one-day cricketer, Pat 

Symcox, will be special guest at the 

annual “Stride with Pride for Hospice” 

event being held along the Sunshine 

Coast next week, and sponsored by GBS 

Mutual Bank. 

The Sunshine Coast Hospice golf day 

takes place over the Royal Port Alfred 

course on Friday February 24 at a 

golf-only fee of R200. However, a 

package deal is available for those 

wanting to play golf and attend the 

dinner in aid of Hospice the same 

evening. Symcox, who played 20 tests 

and 80 one-day matches for South 

Africa, will be guest speaker. The 

package deal costs R450 which includes 

golf, half-way house and three-course 

dinner. Non-golfers can book a table for 

10 people for the dinner at R2500. 

The following morning – S at u r d ay 

February 25 – will see Symcox starting 

the Stride with Pride beach walks at 

East Beach in Port Alfred. There is the 

5km walk for families to Rufanes River 

and back, and the longer one from East 

Beach to Kleinemonde, a distance of 

17km. There is the option of stopping at 

Riet River, which is 10km from the start. 

The cost is R50 each for adults, R30 for 

pensioners and students, R20 for pupils 

and R20 for dogs on leads.

proceeds going to Sunshine Coast

At assembly last week, Kingswood 

College made several academic awards 

to pupils based on marks achieved in

Fun for little ones at sports day 

EL SHADDAI Christian 

Academy’s pre-primary 

section held its sports day 

last Friday morning. 

The Little Lambs, Busy 

Bees and Clever Cats 

competed in teams called 

Lions and Eagles. 

Their events were 

running around the field, 

hopping like a rabbit, 

hopping like a frog, 

walking like a giant, 

crawling on hands and feet, 

sprinting, and a firm 

favourite was riding 

p u s h - m ot o r b i ke s . 

The day ended with 

moms, dads, grannies, 

granddads, and those kind 

enough to run with those 

without family members, 

piggy-backing the little 

ones across the field.

THE first round of the annual 

Kowie Night Bowls last Friday 

was a festive occasion blessed 

with perfect weather. 

All teams taking part were at 

the club well in time for the 

official welcome, with some of 

the teams having printed 

distinctive uniform T-shirts. 

Club president Peter Ford 

welcomed all and handed over 

to Jacques Krige to officiate the 

night. It was very pleasing to see 

such a crowd arrive to support 

the teams. 

The Lions Club settled in at 

the pavilion overlooking the 

green with their cooking aromas 

filling the air and the music 

really getting the players into 

their groove. 

At the end, there were no 

runaways and only one full 

house score which went to 

Round Table who defeated 

S ot h e by ’s Real Estate with 6 

points and a 9-shot profit. This 

earned them the “Performer of 

the Night” prize, which is Pick n 

Pay shopping vouchers. The 

performer of the night prize can 

only be won once by any team, 

so this makes for a fun 

tournament. 

The “Swindle Board” had a 

prize of a bottle of sponsored 

liquor from Pick n Pay. Kowie 

Night Bowls convenor Mike 

Tomlinson said it was the first 

time since he had been at the 

club that Natasha’s number was 

drawn, but she was not there. 

This being an attendance prize 

another number was drawn and 

Lionel from Leach Pharmacy was 

on hand to accept the prize, with 

his team having many 

suggestions of what should 

happen to the bottle. 

Next was the “roll over” 

competition where the club puts 

in R60 per week.Four ends are 

drawn and then a score is drawn 

out the box. It was nine and 

none of the 16 teams matched 

this, so it rolls over to the next 

round, adding R60 (total R120) 

for another try. 

“I think all enjoyed their 

evening and thank you to our 

sponsor Pick n Pay who puts in 

such a lot to all sports clubs in 

this town,” Tomlinson said.

Four Port Alfred teams played in the Albany GBS 

last Saturday. 

Thanks to Albany Bowling Club for a wonderful 

tournament, which was enjoyed by all participants.

Kenton Bowling Club 

The second round of the Dias Trips Jackpot was 

played last week Wednesday. 

Alf Beavis and his team walked off with the 

monthly prize; narrowly beating Lionel Howarth’s 

team on shot profit. The 43 players however, had 

their target set on the year-end Jackpot prize. Kate 

Beavis (the Beavis family seem to be on a winning 

streak this month) is still in the lead on 35 points. 

She is closely followed by three women (Moira 

Stirk, Stella Baillie and Ruth Low) on 34 points. 

S at u r d ay ’s tabs-in competition was won by 

Rodney Austin’s team. There was a low turnout of 

players as most of the men were “r e st i n g ” (?) for 

S u n d ay ’s League fixture at Albany Bowling Club. 

Our opponents in the second round were Port 

Alfred Bowling Club. Our second league side gave 

a good account of themselves. Stompie 

Bellingan’s team scored the maximum 5 points 

and George Chowles’ team contributing another 

point. With a total of 15 points after the two 

rounds our side is heading the second league.

... what’s happening 

Our first league side played their first games 

(we had a bye in the first round) and did not fare 

as well as we would have liked. With three points 

we occupy the bottom of the log but have a game 

in hand over the top three. 

Monday was the third round in the annual 

Business League. By the time of going to press the 

third-round results were not available yet but 

teams to watch are Roscoe’s/Volo, Preston’s, Dias 

“B” and BUCO. The Monday early evenings games 

are attracting a lot of enthusiastic followers and 

the atmosphere in the clubhouse is quite festive. 

The light meals provided by Marlene Franklin from 

our kitchen area are an added attraction and they 

are regularly sold out. Although the spectators on 

the banks are quite social the games on the 

greens are serious and some budding new bowlers 

have been identified. 

The new emphasis on more competitive bowling 

has proven to be popular with all. The score board 

in the clubhouse is diligently updated and the 

daily prize money (sometimes with additional pen 

prizes) has certainly resulted in more focussed 

play in our social tabs-in games. 

The committee is working on establishing a 

singles ladder for both men and ladies. Once the 

Conditions of Play have been ironed out it will be 

implemented.

Last Tuesday we had a full green of mixed eights

Michael Beaumont’s team of trips, Roy Wilkins 

and Rob Turner, took revenge on Keith Kolesky’s 

team in a reversal of last week’s result with a 10 

point and a big shot profit win to take home the 

Megabucks prize. The runner-up was Mike 

To m l i n s o n ’s team of trips over Jackie Kriel’s team. 

Last Thursday with no sponsored competition 

we played the Snow Ball with another full green of 

mixed eights and sixes. The four ends were drawn 

and then the score of 1 was drawn out. Harold 

Bodill and Lucille Keyter’s teams both matched the 

score so it is a rollover to the next week. 

S at u r d ay ’s bowls in sweltering heat and storms 

threatening had smallish turnout for the Courtyard 

competition. They went in for tea and shortly 

thereafter the heavens opened up and that was 

the end of bowls for the day. Not having completed 

the games the competition has been carried over 

to a date to be decided. 

Three mixed teams headed off to Grahamstown 

to play in the Albany GBS Mixed Fours competition 

and had a successful campaign playing a full 

game in the morning with the afternoon game 

being shortened due to the storm that had players 

running for shelter. Pieter Stegmann’s team of 

Stan Richter, Linda May and Michael Pfotenhauer 

won both their games to win the competition and 

second place went to a Grahamstown team, with 

Jacques Krige’s team of Mike Tomlinson, Lawrie 

May and Gill Turner also winning both their games 

being placed third.

February 11: For the first half of 

the morning, the sun shone down 

brutally hot and, with high 

humidity, made conditions very 

uncomfortable for the 36 players 

competing. Fortunately, a light 

easterly breeze then sprung up 

giving substantial relief to the 

field. A two-to-count Stableford 

alliance was the format of choice, 

drawn into nine four-balls. 

Mo Marsey, Andy Manson, 

Margie and Brian Field carded a 

massive 97 points to win the 

morning's proceedings, Hot on 

their heels, Dee Jones-Phillipson, 

Anton Emslie, Stuart Manning 

and Terry Harris claimed second

Friday February 10: A pleasant 

morning for golf presented itself 

on Friday, it being bright and 

sunny with fresh easterly winds. 

A total 38 players were drawn 

into two three-balls and eight 

four-balls to play the usual 

two-to-count stableford alliance.

Segers carded a massive 98 

points to easily win the 

competition. The three-ball of

East London on Saturday. About 700 participants ran from the Igoda 

turnoff on the R72 to Buffs Club on a relatively easy, undulating course 

which ran through the harbour and along the beachfront in very humid 

conditions. The Striders said the race was very well organised with an 

awesome vibe. Beyleveld won her age category and Joiner was second in 

his. The times achieved were Alan Robb 1 hour 55 minutes, Avril 

Beyleveld 2:14, Rob Joiner 2:24 and Marietjie Robb 2:26 

KOWIESTRIDERS 

Race results: 

Marietjie and Alan Robb ran 

the 15km Tomato Trot on 

Saturday February 4 in the 

Gonubie area. A tough, hilly run 

on mainly dirt/farm roads. 

At 3.30pm it was very hot 

and humid. An enjoyable 

well-organised run with food 

stalls and mountain bike races 

as well. 

Marietjie ran it in 1:55 and 

was third among more than 60 

ladies. Alan ran it in 1:33:46 

and finished 153rd overall out 

of 484 finishers. 

February 11: Rio Resort Classic 

Half Marathon, Klerksdorp 

The half marathon, which is a 

single lap of the marathon, is 

an out-and-back event, which 

starts and ends at the Rio 

Casino in Klerksdorp. 

Jean and Carol Nepgen took 

part. Carol won the prize for 

being the first female 

grandmaster. Their times: Carol 

2:58:13 and Jean 3:43:11. 

February 12: Pick n Pay Half 

Marathon and 8km Fun Run, 

Johannesburg 

Both events started and 

ended at Saheti School in 

Edenvale. Carol Nepgen walked 

the half marathon, which is

School Cricket Club 

played their first match 

against Port Alfred 

High School last Wednesday. 

“Even though we didn’t win, it 

was nice that we established some 

ties with Port Alfred High School in 

terms of cricket,” Nomzamo Cricket 

Club coach Gareth Mitchell said. 

“It seems as though this may 

become a more regular event, and 

that would be amazing.” 

A well-timed series of events, 

including bad weather leading to 

the cancellation of PAHS’s U15 

cricket team’s Schools League 

match in Grahamstown, and some 

community camaraderie at just the 

right time, were instrumental in the 

start of Nomzamo Cricket Club’s 

j o u r n e y. 

Because the Nomzamo team is a 

mix of all ages, PAHS fielded a 

blended team of players from their 

second, as well as U15B team. 

In the match against the more 

experienced PAHS players, some 

stars from the Nomzamo Cricket 

Club team stood out. Shaquille 

Thomas and Tyrrick Arnoldus played 

with heart and dreams of one day 

playing for the Proteas. 

Thomas was the best bowler for 

Nomzamo, taking six wickets, while 

Arnoldus shone as a bowler and a 

batsman, scoring a number of runs 

before being bowled out by Kirwan 

Scott of PAHS. 

“It’s not my first match,” said 

Arnoldus, who is an aspiring 

all-rounder intending to play both 

cricket and rugby in his life. 

Port Alfred High School won the 

toss and elected to bat first. They 

scored 85 all out. Nomzamo scored 

48 all out. 

Even though Nomzamo lost the 

game, they were noted for showing 

grit and courage on the field. 

Even though few spectators were 

present, the sparring session 

between the two schools is 

expected to become a recurring 

community activity which promises 

a lot of fun and excitement. Support 

and encouragement are welcomed 

for this emerging team, who are 

developing in new ways, spectator 

Julie Mitchell said. 

“They’re recognising teamwork 

and that they can achieve in life,” 

said Mitchell. “Developing skills in 

a sport is something to aim for as it 

keeps their morale going.” 

Nomzamo Cricket Club may be 

established and breaking 

boundaries this year, but the team 

is still faced with a shortage of 

equipment, which has been priced 

at a reduced R8000. 

With limited funds available, any 

further contributions to the team 

are welcomed.
