A GOODlife Starts with Mom
WINNER!
Congratulations Marisa Krause!
On the morning of September 29th, 1993, I entered this world, nearly losing my life, and nearly taking my mother’s
in the process. She was eight months pregnant with me when a doctor’s visit resulted in her being rushed to the ER
with heart failure. I was an emergency C-section and came out with little oxygen. Over the next day, I would be
flown to two different hospitals before receiving open heart surgery at barely forty-eight hours old. I survived and
my mother had survived, but not without complications. I had suffered an injury to my brain, giving me a mild case
of cerebral palsy which was diagnosed when I was two years old.
My mother didn’t know if I’d ever walk, talk, go to school, or have a “normal” life, but insisted she’d do everything in
her power to make sure I did. Through her strength, patience, and determination, I learned how to do everything,
including walking (unassisted) and talking (so much so I rarely ever stop.) I’ve graduated high school and am nearly
finished with college. I needed multiple surgeries in my teens, and just as when I was a baby, she stayed by my side,
caring for me. She even took me prom dress shopping with surgical needles sticking out of my leg. I was lucky—I
had gotten through all of it because I had a strong woman to remind me every day that I could.
Two years ago, on her birthday, my mom was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. I’ll never forget that day.
Now my mom is the one who needs help and who doubts her strength, and I’m the one helping her, not only as
a loving daughter, but as a best friend, because throughout my life, she has been my number one support system.
She not only gave me life, but she saved my life by doing what no surgery could ever do—not give up on me. Even
during this time, she is still the funniest, smartest, bravest, and most beautiful woman I know. Many people can’t
even believe she’s sick because she looks so good! Though I know our time may be shorter than most mothers and
daughters have, I thank God every day I get with her. I don’t know why we’ve had to face so many health challenges,
but I can see now clear as day that we were destined to have this life together, and I couldn’t imagine my journey
with anyone else. She’s taught me how to love, how to care for others, and how to thrive even when the world looks
so grim—and perhaps most importantly, how to do it all while smiling and looking fabulous (hint: lipstick)!
Stewarding a Legacy
Far Greater than
the Chicken Sandwich
with
‘s
Written by:
Gabriel Bland
Trudy Cathy White
“A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches,
Loving favor rather than silver and gold.” Proverbs 22:1
This verse has shaped several names that many of us know extremely well.
Whether you are familiar with the Cathy family name in and of itself, the
ministries of WinShape Camps, or the ever-adored chicken sandwich
franchise Chick-fil-A, you know the reputation of excellence, service,
and purpose. Many people have heard that it all started with a man
named Truett Cathy, a piece of chicken, and two buns. While this isn’t
far from the truth, there is so much more to the story of the chicken
sandwich and the people who pioneered its rise to public esteem.
Truett was a man who established himself and his family on the Word
of God. He saw that there were no contradictions between the Word
and good business practices. Not only did he live his life seeking to
hold fast to the Word in business, but he strove to make it the foundation
for every other area of his life, especially his home life. His
ideals have made a significant mark on the fast food industry, but
even more importantly, a powerful and permanent impact on the
lives of his children, including his daughter Trudy Cathy White.
From its humble beginnings, Chick-fil-A, originally named the
“Dwarf Grill,” has been a family business. Trudy fondly recalls
singing for patrons with her siblings, picking up trash in the
parking lot, and scraping gum off of the bottom of the tables
in the small restaurant. As she grew older, her involvement
did not wane. During her freshman year of college at Samford
University, Trudy became the youngest owner-operator of
a Chick-fil-A restaurant at the age of 19. She grew to learn
that this was just one of the many ways her father chose to
invest in the person he saw that she would become. With
clear adoration for both of her parents radiating through her
expressions, Trudy shares, “So often when I didn’t believe in
myself, my Mom and Dad believed in me. And that is, a lot
10 goodlifemagazine.org
of the time, people’s story; that Dad saw something
in them that they didn’t even see in themselves.”
That kind of intentionality from her family, as well
as from camp counselors and other mentors in her
life, helped guide Trudy to be the woman she is
today, the kind of woman who seeks to abide in
the will of God.
It was out of that desire Trudy learned to let go
of the things she was holding onto that were
keeping her from where God was calling her.
For herself, her husband John, and their young
children, that resulted in leaving the comfort
of everything they knew to become long-term
missionaries in Brazil, where they started a
small church and a home for children in need. And
after ten fruitful years there, God called them back to the United States to continue
changing the lives of generations through new roles. God opened the door for Trudy to become the Girls’ director
for WinShape Camps, a camp ministry associated with Chick-fil-A that focuses on sharpening children’s character,
deepening their Christian faith, and growing their relationships with others. It too was founded by her parents, transpiring
after they saw the life-changing impact that summer camps had had for Trudy and her brothers, Dan, who is
now the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for Chick-fil-A, and Donald “Bubba,” who serves as Executive Vice
President and President of the Dwarf House line of their restaurants.
“As the director of WinShape camps, I have seen the influence we can have on the lives of this next generation, and
a big part of my purpose, that I sense God has given me, is to really cultivate Godly character in the lives of this
next generation.” Openly sharing her passion for what God is doing in this ministry, she imparts the heart behind
WinShape, “We are so very passionate about providing experiences that will
transform the lives of campers and families with the message of Jesus Christ.”
To adequately convey the immense influence the Cathy family has had on the
lives of countless others is nearly impossible, but the credit for that legacy can
only be given to God. And it is through His strength that they are able to con-
tinually press forward. These truths are part of the legacy that Truett has passed
on to his children. Since his passing, the values that her father lived by have
stood out with even a greater sense of importance for Trudy.
One principle her father sought to instill in her since she was a small child was
that it is genuinely greater to give than it is to receive. He would say, “Trudy, if
you’ll help other people get what they need in life, you’ll eventually get what
you want out of life.” This is a truth that can be seen in the model of how
Chick-fil-A does business. “Our corporate purpose, which is different than
any other fast food business, is to glorify God by being a faithful steward of
all that’s been entrusted to us, and to be a positive influence on other people.
And obviously when people come eat with us, we want to give them great
food, a clean place to eat, and wonderful, friendly service” explains Trudy.
“Most people think that we are in the chicken business, but the bottom line
is that the Chick-fil-A Sandwich is simply a tool that God has given us,
and we want to leverage it to influence lives.” And as
Trudy persistently seeks to follow God’s
direction, these are the foundational
principles that guide her decisions. Her
obedience and humble submission allow
God to continually use her to make an
impact for the kingdom of heaven. It
doesn’t matter if you only have pennies
to your name, or if you’re working with
a chicken sandwich, because when you
steward what you do have (time, talents,
resources, connections, or influence) to
serve God, you will find more than you
ever knew you wanted out of life.
Little
Known Fact
“Not even my closest staff actually know this, but when I was younger I was
actually an amatuer HAM radio operator, and when my family would be on
the road I would use it to talk to truck drivers and other people. And my
handle when doing this was ‘Chicken Little.’”-Trudy
Faith for
Tomorrow’s
Uncertainty
-By Mason Tanner
With graduation season blooming and hopes for the future beginning to bud, there is one
major question on the minds of graduates of all shapes and sizes, “What next?” The world
today has an exceptionally strong obsession with the future and what the days ahead of us will
bring. This evokes all sorts of anxieties about our tomorrows that ultimately steal our todays from
us. This fixation on direction and what might come next reminds me of a story an old friend of
mine told me years ago.
A man who had longed to meet Mother Teresa was finally given the opportunity to do so while
in India on a short mission. When the two finally met, the man pleaded with her to pray for
him, saying, “Will you please pray for me? I need direction for my future.” Her response was one
that took the breath from the man much like a punch in the stomach. She replied, “No.” To his
bewilderment, she added, “You do not need direction—you need faith.”
Our obsession with knowing what the future holds has caused us, in many cases, to lose sight of
the gift of faith. For those who are soon to be embarking on the new journey of post-graduate life
and possible new careers, relationships, and families, I implore you with the words of Jesus, “Can
any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” (Matthew 6:27) But instead, live your life
in humble submission to God, walking in the joy set before you of faith in Him. Believe that He is
guiding your footsteps and leading you according to His words through the apostle Paul in the book
of Romans: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have
been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)
Take time today to thank God for the gifts he has given you, including the gift of faith, and reflect
on His promise to work for your good, even if you do not know what it is. He will open a door for
you. Knock on that door through prayer, and when it opens… walk through it.
Mason is a husband, a father, and founding Pastor of Dwelling Place College and Young Adults Ministry.
Mason received a B.A. in Philosophy and Religion from Auburn University and an M.A. in Intercultural
Studies and Church Planting from Asbury Theological Seminary. He is passionate about the Gospel
spreading through the avenues of media and seeing young people come alive in Christ.
Avoiding Harmful HYDRATION
Spring is Here!
This means warmer weather, sports, and lots of outdoor activities. It also means we are all
drinking more liquids to stay hydrated. Are these liquids healthy for our teeth?
Taking care of your teeth is a daily practice, complemented by professional cleanings, preventative
measures such as sealants or fluoride treatments, and restorative care when needed. The strength
and attractiveness of our teeth is affected by daily care, as well as lifestyle habits. This means
that what we eat and drink are as important as the standard of oral hygiene we maintain. Recent
research has brought to light that many people are putting their oral health at risk with the regular
consumption of certain types of popular beverages (sodas, sports drinks, energy drinks).
When we consider the foods and drinks we enjoy, we need to look at the sugar content. Not only
does sugar feed the body empty calories, this substance plays a role in the formation of cavities.
Sugar is not the direct cause of cavities, but rather the fuel source for bacteria that naturally live
14 goodlifemagazine.org
in the mouth. Bacteria feed on sugar and produce an acid that
dissolves minerals, essentially eating away healthy enamel.
Many of the drinks people enjoy, including sugary sodas,
contain enough acid to pose a real threat to teeth. Exposing
the teeth to high levels of acid over extended periods of time
can result in cavities, as well as acid erosion. Acid erosion is
loss of the enamel on the teeth in layers, eventually exposing
the layer underneath the enamel, called dentin. This can lead to
sensitivity with the teeth.
It is important to be educated on the harmful effects of these
high sugar foods and drinks. It is best to limit the frequency in
which you consume these products. Do not brush your teeth
immediately after consumption, but you can rinse your mouth
with water. It takes 20–40 minutes for the pH in the mouth to
neutralize after eating or drinking. During this time, avoid brushing your teeth because the acid in
the mouth is at its peak, and therefore, the most damaging.
As family dentists at 32 Dental, one of our primary goals is to protect patients’ teeth from the
damaging effects of harmful bacteria. Providing excellent dental care and having a highly
experienced dental team are vital to the care of our patients. Even more important are the habits we
encourage our patients to establish at home.
Living in
God’s Best
By Andrew Wommack
I’m going to tell you something
that might surprise you:
You can’t receive God’s best by accident.
God’s best is not like winning the lottery.
Yes, the Word says that God’s blessing will
overtake you (Deut. 28:2), but I guarantee
that there needs to be something
intentional on your part if it’s going to
come to pass.
Many Christians are praying for God’s
blessings but aren’t receiving them. Their
cups aren’t overflowing, and their barns
aren’t filled with plenty. When faced with
their lack, they tend to blame God. But the
truth is, God wants to bless you more than
you want to be blessed. It’s not His fault
you aren’t receiving His best; He’s already
done His part. You need to do yours. God
has given me a revelation that I know will
help you receive what He has for you.
If I offered you five dollars or one hundred
dollars, without a doubt, you’d pick the
hundred. You’d probably say, “Cash,
please.” But when God is the One offering,
many Christians—whether knowingly or
unknowingly—settle for less than God’s
best. Why is that?
Here God is, wanting to bless people with
health and abundance, yet the average
Christian lives below His desire. He
has blessed us exceedingly abundantly
above all that we can ask or think, but it’s
according to the power that works in us
(Eph. 3:20). You might be thinking, I’m
16 goodlifemagazine.org
not doing so bad. I just need a miracle to pay this bill,
or to get this healing, or to solve this problem. But
guess what? A miracle is not God’s best for you! In
order to go from miracle to miracle, you have to go
from crisis to crisis. Because God loves you, He will
give you a miracle so you can get through the crisis,
but He has a better way.
You really need to prepare your heart to receive
God’s best. It’s a process, and it starts with an
attitude that says, “God, I don’t want to live like this
anymore. I don’t want to see Your promises from far
away. I know that You have more for me, and I want
to receive and live in Your promises!”
You might be wondering, How do I change? There is
a lot I can say about this, but I’m going to give you a
few keys:
1) Change the way you think, and don’t settle
for less than God’s best! You need to understand
that receiving God’s best is not getting God to do
something. Don’t sit there begging God to do what
He’s already done. Instead, ask Him to help you
understand what He has already given you.
2) You also need to understand the difference
between a blessing and a miracle. A miracle
supersedes natural law for a temporary period of
time. To get a miracle, you need a crisis. Do you
know Christians who receive miracle after miracle
but struggle with lack all the time? That doesn’t have
to be you.
3) Living in the blessing supersedes a miracle. The
Bible talks a lot more about blessings than miracles.
Paul even wrote about how believers go from glory
to glory (2 Cor. 3:18). God doesn’t want you to live
by miracles. He wants you to live in the blessing, so
it’s important to understand what the blessing is.
In a nutshell, it’s the favor of God spoken over you;
you must learn to walk that out. And think about
this: When the Lord declares His blessing over you,
nothing can stop it!
A miracle is just enough to get you by. It will never
be true abundance. In the beginning, when God
created Adam and Eve, He blessed them (Gen.
1:22). This blessing empowered them to live like
Him. It empowered them to prosper, to rule, to be
productive, and to enjoy eternity with Him. The
good news is, God wants the same for you!
If you’ve been going from miracle to miracle, you
need to understand the principles of how to receive
God’s best so you don’t have to struggle anymore.
Satan doesn’t want you to get this revelation because
he knows nothing will stop you if you do. And then,
truly, the blessing will overtake you.
Even if you have heard me teach this before, I
believe that God will give you a fresh revelation.
It will really answer some questions and help you
overcome obstacles that may have been hindering
you for a long time.
Egg Roll
in a
Bowl
I have been getting healthy
(or healthier) over the last
couple of months. I love the
results I am seeing and am
committed to this process
– really. One problem that
I’ve encountered is that
there are certain ethnic foods
that I really love, but that do
not provide healthy options,
specifically Chinese food. I
decided to take one of my favorite
foods at the Chinese restaurant and
create a dish reminiscently full of flavor, but that eliminates (or
significantly reduces) any of the “bad” ingredients. Egg Roll in a
Bowl is the result of this endeavor. I hope you enjoy!
1. Brown the pork in a pan, drain the meat, and then set aside.
2. In a pan, over medium-high heat, sauté onions in the sesame oil until
lightly browned.
3. Reduce the heat to medium and add the spices, Splenda, wine, and
broth.
4. Add cabbage, and stir to coat.
5. Cook until cabbage slightly wilts.
6. Add carrots, and cook 2 to 3 minutes.
7. Stir in the browned pork and liquid aminos until well-mixed.
8. Serve over rice of choice, and garnish with green onion.
