GARDENING TIPS
FOR MAY
Warm weather means
our gardens and landscapes
are growing
fast. Here are some
tasks to keep your
landscape beautiful
and productive:
Flowers: Time to plant
summer blooming perennials
and annuals including plumbago, zinnias, angelonia, purslane,
lobularia, sunflowers, yellow bells, pride of Barbados, duranta
and bat-faced cuphea.
Vegetables: May is a great time to plant, from seed or nursery plants,
okra, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, winter squash, pumpkins, basil,
peppers, lima beans, eggplant, garlic chives and Malabar greens. If you
don’t want to dedicate an area of your yard, consider planting here and
there in your flowerbeds. Edible landscaping is a popular new trend!
Lawns: Water 1/2 to 1” of irrigation per week. A rain gauge or straight
sided container (such as a tuna fish can) will help you know how long
to run your irrigation system to apply 1/2”.
Weeding: Hand pull or hoe weeds while they are still young or better
yet, maintain a 3” layer of mulch in all vegetable and flowerbeds to
deter weeds from getting a start.
Pruning: Remove spent blooms on spring and summer annuals to
promote new blooms.
Fertilizing: Fertilize flowerbeds and vegetable gardens w/slow release
organic fertilizer.
Water: Deep soakings between rain events is better than frequent
light sprinkling.
Birds: Spring migration continues until mid-May. Clean bird feeders!
Replace water in bird baths to avoid creating mosquito breeding
spots.
PET INFORMATION
SCOOPAGE PET POOPAGE
It may not be a fabulous way to walk, but
please have courtesy to please scoop when
your pet poops during your walks. Throughout
the community trails, you will find areas to toss
your pet’s poopage and in some areas, there
are also bags. Carry your own grocery bags -
you’ll be recycling at the same time! Many of
your neighbors work hard with their lawncare
and landscaping. Come with a scooper and a
recycled grocery bag or anything else. Picking
up after your pets shows your respect for every
homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet
feces damages lawns and many residents are
working hard to maintaining their grass!
VETERINARY PUBLIC HEALTH DIVISION
(Formerly called Harris County Animal Control)
The Veterinary Public Health Division posts
photos of all animals found on their website
and updates it twice daily. If you have lost your
pet, please check this website,
www.hcphes.org/vph.
Have you lost a pet?
Start your search immediately, don’t wait to
make flyers.
Contact all possible animal control or animal
welfare agencies in the area. Visit each location
at least every other day.
Call your pet’s veterinarian and the microchip
company to make sure they have current contact
information for you. A citizen may try to call
the veterinarian’s office or microchip company
themselves from your pet’s tags.
Call all the veterinarians in your area to alert
them to the description of your lost pet in case
someone brings it to their clinic.
Check with your neighbors, especially families
with childrenand ask if they’ve seen a pet that
looks like yours.
Search your neighborhood on foot, your pet
maybe be nearby
but is injured and unable to get back home.
Leave a towel or article of clothing with your
scent on it outside of your home. Your pet
may be disorientated and will be attracted by
your scent.
Have you found a pet?
First, think of the animal as lost and not
abandoned and make every effort to reunite
the animal to an owner.
Contact the HCPH VPH office by telephone
and report the animal as found.
Bring the animal to the HCPH VPH facility or
check with a local veterinarian to scan the
animal for a microchip.
Return to the place where you found the
animal and put up a found pet poster near
that location.
If you find the owner, especially off a newspaper
or website posting, ask them to provide
a picture of the animal and meet in a public
place like a police station.
More information about Microchips
& Microchip companies
A microchip is a small device (size of a grain
of rice) that is permanent and implanted with
a needle under the skin of pets.
Pets do not have to be given any pain medication
or anesthesia
to implant a microchip.
Microchips are not likely to move or need
repair if implanted correctly.
Microchips, when scanned, show a unique
code. The microchip must be registered with
the corresponding microchip manufacture to
record any owner and animal data.
Microchips do not work like GPS locators or
LoJack and cannot give a signal to find the
location of your lost pet.
HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose
a threat to all our residents. While you may
know your pet is friendly, an animal running
at someone who is walking by is very scary for
that person. Many children are afraid of animals
and become frightened, which could result in
the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal.
Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris
County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs
and cats must be kept under restraint while
in the unincorporated areas of Harris County,
Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not
authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed
dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat
to become a stray.”
Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or
cat under the following circumstances:
1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not
more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or l
eash is held by a human being, who is capable
of controlling or governing the dog or cat in
question
2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle
3. When it is on the premise of the custodian
and the animal does not have access
to sidewalk or street.”
While it may be nice to have your animal out in
the yard while you work or play, it is against the
law, unless the animal is properly restrained.
Let’s all help keep our community a safe and
comfortable place for all our residents by being
responsible pet owners. This will not only protect
anyone who may be walking or bicycling
in the area, but also the pet owner who could
be held legally responsible or possibly sued
for failing to properly restrain their pet. For a
complete list of regulations, call
281-999-3191 or visit www.hcphes.org/vph.
CONSIDERING GETTING A NEW DOG?
…or if you know friends and family who are,
please consider and suggest rescuing vs.
buying a dog from a breeder. We have every
breed of purebred dog available in our Texas
pounds and shelters, in great quantities.
This is because of the complete lack of any
regulations or limit on breeding in Texas.
• Approximately 30-40% of euthanasias in
pounds involve purebred animals.
• Mixed breeds in Texas stand almost no
chance of making it out of the pounds alive.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with
these dogs; they just had the misfortune of
being owned by people who did not provide
for their needs and care and obviously had
no real commitment to their pet.
• Countless numbers of people turn their
own dogs in to high-kill shelters, dump
them rurally in the middle of nowhere or let
them roam and stray. It reflects a mentality
that most dog lovers do not understand.
• When you or someone you know considers
adopting a dog, please check out one of our
five local animal shelters:
1. BARC - Bureau of Animal Regulation and
Care i.e. Houston’s animal control or city
All about Cinco
De Mayo!
Cinco de Mayo means “the fifth of May.”
Cinco de Mayo is the anniversary of a
battle that took place between the Mexicans
and the French in 1862.
• The battle is known as the Battle of
Puebla and it celebrates Mexico’s victory
over the French. It also marks a turning
point in Mexican national pride. The victory made the Mexican people
very happy and helped create a feeling of national unity.
• While Cinco de Mayo is a national holiday in Mexico, it is mainly observed
in the state capital of Puebla. However, in the United States, it is
becoming a popular holiday to celebrate Mexican culture.
• The largest Cinco de Mayo event in the world is held in Los Angeles,
California, where more than 600,000 people celebrate with music and
food. The whole event is called Festival de Fiesta Broadway.
• There aren’t any specific foods associated with Cinco de Mayo, but
traditional Mexican dishes such as enchiladas, burritos, guacamole and
tacos are popular.
• The Mexican flag is green, white and red. The traditional meaning
is thought to be that green= hope and the independence movement;
white=purity and religion and red=Spain and union. The emblem in
the middle consists of an eagle and a snake, based on an Aztec legend.
Mother’s Day - A day for MOM
Mother’s Day has its roots
in ancient Greek festivals
honoring Rhea, the Mother
of the Gods. The modern
American holiday officially
began in 1914, when President
Woodrow Wilson declared the
second Sunday in May a day to
honor all the mothers. Here
are some tips on celebrating
Mother’s Day on May 14 th !
1. Deliver the classic Mother’s Day treat: breakfast in bed on an old-fashioned
wicker tray table. Cook her favorite morning fare, mix her an
eye-opening mimosa and tuck her favorite flowers into a small crystal
vase. If the tray has slots on the sides, fill them with small presents (or
big presents in small packages).
2. Take your mother on a trip with Mother’s Day sandwiched in the middle.
Make it as simple as a long weekend at the beach or as elaborate as
a trip across the States.
3. Surprise your mother with a visit if she lives far away.
4. Deliver her present by way of a treasure hunt. Lead her on as long a
trail as you think she’ll find amusing, with her present waiting at the end.
5. Honor your mother’s memory if she’s no longer living. Send a donation
to her favorite charity or spend the day working for her favorite cause.
Do things she taught you to love.
6. Thank the women who produced your favorite people - send cards,
flowers or notes to the mothers of your friends, even if you’ve never
met them.
7. Throw a Mother’s Day party for your mother, your friends
and their mothers. Consider a festive spring brunch.
8. Best tip: tell mom you love her.
MOTHERS DAY
Sunday, May 14 th
Mother’s Day History and Fun Facts
Did you know that more phone calls are made on Mother’s Day than on
any other day of the year? In fact, phone traffic has been known to spike
by nearly 40% on this holiday honoring motherhood.
It’s a traditional holiday that is observed throughout the world in different
ways. In the U.S., mothers are most typically presented with flowers, cards
and other gifts. (Though in 2016, about 55% of consumers took Mom out.)
But since this is common knowledge, we wanted to go one step further and
learn why Mother’s Day exists at all. Here’s what we learned.
The History of Mother’s Day in America
The American version of Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908. It became
an official holiday just 6 years later in 1914. Anna Jarvis is credited with
creating the U.S. holiday and leading the charge to have it officially added
to the national calendar. She first conceived of the idea after the death of
her mother, Anna Reeves Jarvis, in 1905. The story goes like this:
• With financial backing from John Wanamaker - owner of the famous department
store chain - she organized the first-ever celebration at a Methodist
Church in Grafton, WV in May 1908. She wanted to recognize the sacrifices
that mothers make for their children.
• On that same day, thousands also attended a Mother’s Day event at a
Wanamaker’s in Philadelphia.
• Building on the success of that first Mother’s Day event, Jarvis began a
6-year campaign to have it added to the national calendar. She argued that
American holidays were biased towards male achievements.
• By 1912 Mother’s Day had been widely adopted at the state and local levels.
• In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure officially establishing
the 2 nd Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
• Jarvis’ vision for Mother’s Day was a day of personal celebration. To her,
the day involved wearing a white carnation in honor of mothers and visiting
one’s mother or attending a church service.
• Florists, greeting card companies and other retailers had other plans
though and by 1920 Jarvis was fully disillusioned by what the holiday had
become, going so far as to openly campaign against all Mother’s Day profiteers.
She went on to file lawsuits against groups using the term “Mother’s
Day” and spent most of her personal wealth in legal fees.
• After pushing for 6 years to make the day official, Jarvis eventually
disowned the holiday and actively lobbied to have it removed from the
American calendar. This effort of course was unsuccessful.
ABOUT MEMORIAL DAY
Reason We Celebrate Memorial Day: A day of remembrance for those
who have died in our nation’s service.
History of the Memorial Day Holiday (U.S.):
• Originally called Decoration Day
• Memorial Day Holiday was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868
by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army
of the Republic
• Memorial Day first observed on May 30, 1868
• Congress changed the observed Memorial Day date in 1968 to the
last Monday in May to ensure a three day weekend
Formal Observance of Memorial Day:
• Wear red poppies on Memorial day to honor those who died
serving the United States during war
• At 3 PM local time on Memorial Day, Americans should pause
for a moment of silence or listen to “Taps”
• Visit cemeteries and place flags or flowers on the graves
of veterans for Memorial Day
• Visit a memorial
• Attend a Memorial Day parade to honor fallen heroes
Informal Observance of Memorial Day:
• Family and friends get together for a Picnic for Memorial Day
• Memorial Day is unofficial kick-off of summer season
MEMORIAL WEEKEND GETAWAYS
Here are some celebrations across America that offered something
special in honor of the Memorial Day holiday:
Palm Springs, Calif.: For guaranteed summer weather
While most beach seasons are just beginning, Memorial Day marks the
end of bearable temps in the desert, so hotels and operators are running
specials for the holiday. Though other parts of California will be in the
midst of “May Gray” and “June Gloom,” Palm Springs still has nonstop
sunshine-plus dozens of vintage shops, acclaimed restaurants and an enduring love for
all things mid-century (its hotels and private homes offer some of the best examples of
1950s modern architecture in the country).
Washington, D.C.: For patriotism, pomp and circumstance
Washington D.C. is the most patriotic place to celebrate the holiday, with a parade and
plenty of pomp and circumstance taking place during special military ceremonies. Arlington
National Cemetery-which celebrated its 150 th anniversary in May 2014-hosts a
wreath-laying ceremony at 11 AM on Memorial Day at the Tomb of the Unknowns accompanied
by performances from the U.S. Navy Band.
Saint Louis: For the ultimate treasure hunt
Don’t miss the largest flea market in the Midwest, Gypsy Caravan, an annual Memorial
Day event organized for the 44 th year by the St. Louis Symphony Volunteer Association.
The Jersey Shore: For family fun and rides along the iconic Boardwalk Steel Pier, Atlantic
City’s popular oceanside amusement park, debuted eight new rides in 2013. Outside
Atlantic City, check out the annual Wildwoods International Kite Festival, the largest in
North America, Friday thru Monday, an event that starts Friday at noon with the “Unlocking
of the Ocean” media event.
Austin: For boating season and outdoor fun
Head to Lake Travis to soak up some of Austin’s best weather of the year, with plenty of
sunshine and temperatures in the eighties. Memorial Day kicks off boating season here,
so the place to be is the lake.
BABY BOOM
By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center
Spring is the time when animals are looking for secluded locations for giving birth and
raising their babies. Sometimes these sites aren’t so “human-friendly” like attics, chimneys
or in your garage. The BEST solution when this happens is to leave them alone until they
move out but if you must move them, please use HUMANE methods to do so. If possible,
postpone your tree trimming until later in the season. Squirrels, birds and raccoons nest
in trees and you could easily displace baby animals by cutting down limbs and trees.
Here are a few tips to help save the babies this spring:
RE-NEST BABY BIRDS: If you’re like me, I was told growing up that one should never touch
a baby bird because the mom will reject it. This is a myth. If you find a baby bird and it
appears uninjured, place it back in the nest. If you can’t reach the nest, you can place the
bird in a shallow basket or box and hang it as close to the nest as possible. In most cases,
mom will continue to care for it. If the bird is injured or the mom isn’t feeding the baby,
it’s time to intervene. Place the baby in a small, covered container and bring it as soon as
possible to TWRC Wildlife Center. Do not attempt to feed it or give it water!
RACCOONS IN THE ATTIC: If you can’t wait until mom moves out on her own, you can
“encourage” her to move by leaving lights on in the area all night. Place a radio in the area
12 Eldridge Echoes | May 2017

®
and play it loudly. It may take a couple of days but she will soon tire of
the light and the noise and move her little ones. Then MAKE SURE you
repair the opening where she got in.
One other helpful information about raccoons. During late spring
and summer, you may see raccoons out during the day. Raccoons are
nocturnal EXCEPT if they are nursing moms. It is not uncommon for
females to be out during daylight hours looking for food. It does NOT
mean she has rabies.
FAWNS: It’s normal for a doe to “park” her fawn and leave it there for
hours while she goes off to eat. The fawns instinctively know that they
must stay there until she returns and unless she has been injured, she
WILL return. Since fawns are odorless, predators are unable to pick up
their scent. When the fawn is about a month old, it will begin traveling
with mom but in the meantime, please LEAVE IT ALONE!
BABY RABBITS: If the babies are not injured and the nest is intact, leave
them alone. Just like a mama doe, rabbits only visit their young two to
three times a day. Here’s a good test if you think the babies really have
been orphaned. Use sticks or trigs and make an “X” over the nest. If,
after 12 hours, the “X” is still in place, the bunnies are probably orphans
and you need to bring them to TWRC for care. Do not attempt to feed
them or give them water!
If you have questions about wildlife, please call TWRC Wildlife Center
at 713-468-TWRC. They are available to answer your questions and give
you guidance on living in harmony with our furry and feathered friends.
education center available to anyone needing assistance with wildlife.
CFISD’s FAIR CREEK-2017 CITY OF HOUSTON HIGH
SCHOOL HOCKEY CHAMPIONS
The 2016-2017 Interscholastic Hockey League(ISHL) season concluded
on Friday, March 10 th with Cy-Fair’s Fair Creek HS team prevailing
with a hard fought, dramatic 2-1 win over Cinco Ranch on the Frozen
Surface at the Willowbrook Aerodrome.
The Fair Creek HS Team whose players reside mainly in the Cypress
area won the regular season league championship with a record
of 17-4-1. Next up for the team was the 1 st round of the playoffs
where Fair Creek defeated Klein 5-2 to advance to the round robin
tournament. In the round robin, Fair Creek beat Memorial West 7-1,
lost a nail biter to Cinco Ranch 1-2 and came back to beat Cy-Woods
6-3. The top 2 teams in the round robin would advance to the ISHL
Championship Game. Those two were Fair Creek and Cinco Ranch,
which would be a rematch of the Fair Creek’s only round robin loss.
The matchup for the ISHL’s Justice Varsity High School Championship
Cup was set in a one game winner take all.
Eldridge Echoes | May 2017
In the FINALS, Fair Creek came out strong with constant pressure
in Cinco Ranch’s defensive end of the ice. Fair Creek’s only 2 goals
of the game were scored by Sam Robinson 8 seconds apart in the
2 nd period. Fair Creek and Kingwood Senior Robinson’s 1 st goal was
a one timer off a hustling Cy-Fair Junior Tyler McLeroy’s pinpoint
pass. Robinson’s game winner came only 8 seconds later as he
tallied his second goal from a lazer pass from Cy-Creek Senior
Jaxon Sharp, which beat Cinco Ranch’s goalie Randy Miller. Miller
was stout all night long stopping 35 shots and only allowing 2 to
cross the goal line to keep Cinco in the game. Fair Creek ended up
out shooting Cinco Ranch 37-13!
This is Fair Creek’s 3 rd City Championship in the past 10 years….
Jaxon Sharp’s 2 nd City Championship in his 4 year Varsity career,
Tyler McLeroy’s 2 nd High School Championship (one with his JV team
in 2015 and with this year’s Varsity Championship) and Caleb was
the 3 rd Newport brother (joining Nathan and Noah) from Langham
Creek to win a City Championship with the Fair Creek team.
The Fair Creek and 9 other High School teams in the Houston area
will now play in the Spring /Summer recreational High School
league with games on Sunday nights at the Willowbrook Aerodrome.
The 2017-18 high school regular season will run from October
’17 - March ’18. For more information on schedules, playoffs,
standings and statistics, check out the ISHL website at www.ishl.
BOY SCOUTS
BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA
COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
For 100 years, Scouting programs have
instilled in youth the values found in the
Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these
values are just as relevant in helping youth
grow to their full potential as they were in
1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic
skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership
skills, outdoor skills and citizenship
skills that influence their adult lives.
The Boy Scouts of America provides youth
with programs and activities that allow
them to:
• Try new things.
• Provide service to others.
• Build self-confidence.
• Reinforce ethical standards.
Scouting provides youth with a sense that
they are important as individuals while
promoting activities that lead to personal
responsibility and high self-esteem. As a result,
when hard decisions have to be made,
peer pressure can be resisted and the right
choices can be made.
Scouting provides a rewarding experience
for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the
local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and
life skills which help our youth Be Prepared.
Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston
Area Counsel - Copperhead District
which includes 23 Cub Scout Packs (boys 5
to 10 years old), 13 Troops (boys from 11 to
18 years old) and 10 Venturing units (boys
and girls from 14 to 21). Our Units typically
meet weekly.
Many of our units are supported by the
local Elementary Schools including: Birkes,
Copeland, Duryea, Fiest, Hemmingway,
Holmsley, Horne, Jowell, Lowery, Metcalf,
Owens, Postma, Robinson, Sheridan, Tipps,
29 TH ANNUAL B. F. ADAM GOLF CLASSIC
MAY 11, 2017
The Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF) will hold its 29 th Annual
B. F. Adam Golf Classic at BlackHorse Golf Club on May 11, 2017. For
the past 7 years, Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital, a Cy-Fair
Educational Foundation Partner, has generously underwritten this
tournament. Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson and IBI Group have
been Platinum Sponsors for more than 10 years.
One of the largest non-celebrity tournaments in the Houston area, the
B.F. Adam Golf Classic is a prime example of our trustees and community
business partners working together to raise scholarship funds for students
of Cypress Fairbanks ISD. This tournament has successfully raised
over 2.7 million dollars. CFEF was established in 1970 as a non-profit
to raise money to fund a scholarship for high school graduates in the
area. Over the past 46 years, the Foundation has grown tremendously
through the efforts of the Board of Trustees and the generosity of the
Cy-Fair Community. The Foundation has awarded more than $7 million
in scholarships to 1,400 graduating seniors. CFEF is a 501(c)3 non-profit
organization, all contributions are tax deductible, as allowed by the law.
NATIONAL MILITARY APPRECIATION MONTH 2017
National Military Appreciation Month (NMAM) is celebrated every May
and is a declaration that encourages U.S. citizens to observe the month
in a symbol of unity. NMAM honors the current and former members
of the U.S. Armed Forces, including those who have died in the pursuit
of freedom. The month of May is characterized by six national observances
which highlights the contributions of those who have served.
The 6 National Observances during
National Military Appreciation Month
members for their patriotic service in support of our country. This
day honors everyone serving in the U.S. Military branches; Air Force,
Army, Coast Guard, Marines, Navy.
Memorial Day
Monday, May 29, 2017 (A Federal holiday observed on the
last Monday in May)
A remembrance of our veterans. Commemorates the men
and women who died while in military service.
History of NMAM
In 1999, Senator John McCain introduced legislation to designate
the month of May, National Military Appreciation Month. Both the
Senate and House of Representatives adopted resolutions calling
for Americans to recognize and honor U.S. Service Members during
NMAM. These proclamations also urge the President to issue a proclamation
calling on the people of the United States to observe NMAM.
