DEED RESTRICTIONS REMINDERS
Garage Sales: Did you know? Two garage sales a year is the limit under
Texas Law. The Limited Sales, Excise and Use Tax Act says that people
who are not operating a business are permitted to have no more than
two sales of their goods each year. If you exceed this amount, you will
be treated as operating a business and you’ll need to obtain a sales tax
permit from the state. A quick Internet search reveals that a number of
Texas cities also have ordinances limiting garage sales and some don’t
allow them at all. Houston has no such ordinance, however, according
to the city’s website. Instead, the city relies on the state law. Businesses
are not allowed in the community.
Trash Can Containers: Trash cans and Trash are to be out of site and
remain out of view at all times, it takes away from property values.
Street Curbs: Curbs are homeowners’ responsibility to keep clean and
free of debris, (i.e. leaves and trash). Keeping these clean will ensure
less street flooding, trash being forced down and clogging sewer drains.
Oil Stains: If you’re having difficulties getting the oil and grease stains
out from your driveway, there are a few mixtures you can buy at an auto
part store that is less than $10. These mixtures will help get the oil and
grease stains in your driveway.
Streetlights: HOA Assessments pay for streetlights, please report streetlight
outages to: www.centerpointenergy.com/services/electricity/residential/reportastreetlightoutage,
you will need the six digit streetlight
pole number and a nearby address when filing out the on line report.
Mother’s Day - A day for MOM
Mother’s Day has its roots in ancient Greek festivals honoring Rhea,
the Mother of the Gods. The modern American holiday officially
began in 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson declared the
second Sunday in May a day to honor all the mothers. Here are
some tips on celebrating Mother’s Day on May 14 th !
1. Deliver the classic Mother’s Day treat: breakfast in bed on an
old-fashioned wicker tray table. Cook her favorite morning fare,
mix her an eye-opening mimosa and tuck her favorite flowers into
a small crystal vase. If the tray has slots on the sides, fill them with
small presents (or big presents in small packages).
2. Take your mother on a trip with Mother’s Day sandwiched in
the middle. Make it as simple as a long weekend at the beach or
as elaborate as a trip across the States.
3. Surprise your mother with a visit if she lives far away.
4. Deliver her present by way of a treasure hunt. Lead her on as
long a trail as you think she’ll find amusing, with her present
waiting at the end.
5. Honor your mother’s memory if she’s no longer living. Send a
donation to her favorite charity or spend the day working for her
favorite cause. Do things she taught you to love.
6. Thank the women who produced your favorite people - send
cards, flowers or notes to the mothers of your friends, even if
you’ve never met them.
7. Throw a Mother’s Day party for your mother, your friends
and their mothers. Consider a festive spring brunch.
8. Best tip: tell mom you love her.
Mother’s Day History
and Fun Facts
Did you know that more
phone calls are made on
Mother’s Day than on any
other day of the year? In
fact, phone traffic has been
known to spike by nearly
40% on this holiday honoring
motherhood.
MOTHERS DAY
Sunday, May 14 th
It’s a traditional holiday that is observed throughout the world in different
ways. In the U.S., mothers are most typically presented with flowers,
cards and other gifts. (Though in 2016, about 55% of consumers took Mom
out.) But since this is common knowledge, we wanted to go one step
further and learn why Mother’s Day exists at all. Here’s what we learned.
The History of Mother’s Day in America
The American version of Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908. It became
an official holiday just 6 years later in 1914. Anna Jarvis is credited
with creating the U.S. holiday and leading the charge to have it officially
added to the national calendar. She first conceived of the idea after the
death of her mother, Anna Reeves Jarvis, in 1905. The story goes like this:
• With financial backing from John Wanamaker - owner of the famous
department store chain - she organized the first-ever celebration at a
Methodist Church in Grafton, WV in May 1908. She wanted to recognize
the sacrifices that mothers make for their children.
• On that same day, thousands also attended a Mother’s Day event at a
Wanamaker’s in Philadelphia.
• Building on the success of that first Mother’s Day event, Jarvis began a
6-year campaign to have it added to the national calendar. She argued
that American holidays were biased towards male achievements.
• By 1912 Mother’s Day had been widely adopted at the state and local
levels.
• In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure officially establishing
the 2 nd Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
CHIROPRACTIC HEALTH and WELLNESS CENTER
• Jarvis’ vision for Mother’s Day was a day of personal celebration. To
her, the day involved wearing a white carnation in honor of mothers
and visiting one’s mother or attending a church service.
• Florists, greeting card companies and other retailers had other
plans though and by 1920 Jarvis was fully disillusioned by what the
holiday had become, going so far as to openly campaign against all
Mother’s Day profiteers. She went on to file lawsuits against groups
using the term “Mother’s Day” and spent most of her personal wealth
in legal fees.
• After pushing for 6 years to make the day official, Jarvis eventually
disowned the holiday and actively lobbied to have it removed from
the American calendar. This effort of course was unsuccessful.
However, the holiday has also been used to advance feminist causes.
For example, in the 1970’s women’s groups were known to use the
attention generated by the holiday to create awareness for the need
for equal rights and access to childcare.
In many other parts of the world, the timing of Mother’s Day aligns more
closely with the historical observance of “Mothering Sunday.” Largely
a European tradition, Mothering Sunday fell on the fourth Sunday in
Lent and was originally seen as a time when the faithful would return
home to the church. Over time, the observance of Mothering Sunday
faded and eventually merged with the secular traditions associated
with the American Mother’s Day.
Early Mother’s Day Incarnations
While Anna Jarvis is credited with the official creation of the holiday,
her mother - Anna Reeves Jarvis - is known for having founded
“Mother’s Day Work Clubs” back in the 1860’s. The goal of these clubs
was to teach local women how to properly care for their children…a
tradition that is still in existence today with local Moms groups!
Another similar effort aimed at united and celebrating mothers
included Julia Ward Howe’s “Mother’s Day Proclamation,” a call to
action for mothers to unite in promoting world peace. Howe later
campaigned for a Mother’s Peace Day to be recognized every June
2 nd . However, none of these or other efforts in the 1800’s ever caught
on beyond the local level.
Traditional Mother’s Day Celebrations
The primary means of celebrating moms on Mother’s Day in the U.S.
continues to be with flowers and other gifts. In fact, Anna Jarvis would
be supremely disappointed to learn that it has become one of the
biggest holidays for consumer spending.
Lakeville | May 2017
Mother’s Day Fun Facts
• About 25% of all flowers purchased throughout the year are for
Mother’s Day
• Carnations are often associated with Mother’s Day - they are said
to be made from the tears’ of Jesus’ mother Mary when she wept at
NATURE’S CLEAN-UP CREW
By Cheryl Conley, TWRC Wildlife Center
You always know when an animal has met an untimely and unfortunate
death when you see Black Vultures or Turkey Vultures. So how can you
tell the difference? The Black Vulture has a featherless black-grey head
while the Turkey Vulture has a featherless red head. In flight, the Black
Vulture is distinguishable by white-tipped wings, whereas the majority
of the underside of the Turkey Vulture is pale in color.
Both species of vultures feed primarily on carrion. Most of what vultures
eat would make any other animal very sick but they are strong animals
with an incredible digestive system and a very strong immune system.
Their stomachs are extremely acidic. They can usually survive eating
carcasses infected with botulism, anthrax, cholera and salmonella.
Some believe that vultures spread disease because they eat dead meat.
Actually, the opposite is true. They rid our environment of what could
potentially cause the spread of diseases.
Turkey Vultures use their eyesight and keen sense of smell to find their
food. By flying low, they are able to see dead animals and detect the
gases produced when an animal begins to decay. They prefer to feed
on animals that are recently dead. Black Vultures can’t smell but will
often follow Turkey Vultures to find food.
The breeding season of the turkey vulture starts in March, peaks in
April to May, and continues into June. Interestingly, vultures don’t
make nests. In most cases, females lay two eggs but have been known
to lay one and rarely three. The eggs are whitish/cream colored and
heavily marked with dark brown or lavender spots around the larger
end. Eggs are generally laid on a bare surface in a protected location.
TWRC receives many calls from the public reporting that a vulture took
up residence in their atrium or on their front porch.
Both parents incubate and the young hatch after 30 to 40 days. Chicks
are altricial or helpless at birth. Both adults feed the chicks by regurgitating
food for them and care for them for 10 to 11 weeks. When adults
are threatened while nesting, they may flee or they may regurgitate
on the intruder or feign death. If the chicks are threatened in the nest,
they defend themselves by hissing and regurgitating. Family groups
will remain together until fall.
Although not endangered, vultures have been impacted by the use of
lead bullets and buckshot used by hunters. If the shot animal is not
removed or covered, vultures will consume the contaminated meat
and become ill or die.
Because of their eating habits and appearance, vultures would probably
never win a “My Favorite Bird” contest or “Most Beautiful Bird” award
but they play an important role in keeping our environment cleaner and
definitely smelling better. Have you thanked a vulture today?
GARDENING TIPS
FOR MAY
Warm weather means
our gardens and landscapes
are growing
fast. Here are some
tasks to keep your
landscape beautiful
and productive:
Flowers: Time to plant
summer blooming perennials
and annuals including plumbago, zinnias, angelonia, purslane,
lobularia, sunflowers, yellow bells, pride of Barbados, duranta
and bat-faced cuphea.
Vegetables: May is a great time to plant, from seed or nursery plants,
okra, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, winter squash, pumpkins, basil,
peppers, lima beans, eggplant, garlic chives and Malabar greens. If you
don’t want to dedicate an area of your yard, consider planting here and
there in your flowerbeds. Edible landscaping is a popular new trend!
Lawns: Water 1/2 to 1” of irrigation per week. A rain gauge or straight
sided container (such as a tuna fish can) will help you know how long
to run your irrigation system to apply 1/2”.
Weeding: Hand pull or hoe weeds while they are still young or better
yet, maintain a 3” layer of mulch in all vegetable and flowerbeds to
deter weeds from getting a start.
Pruning: Remove spent blooms on spring and summer annuals to
promote new blooms.
Fertilizing: Fertilize flowerbeds and vegetable gardens w/slow release
organic fertilizer.
Water: Deep soakings between rain events is better than frequent
light sprinkling.
Birds: Spring migration continues until mid-May. Clean bird feeders!
Replace water in bird baths to avoid creating mosquito breeding
spots.
ANIMAL FOSTERS NEEDED
Summer is almost here, children are out of school. What better time
to get involved with a rescue group and help a dog or cat in need?
That’s what fostering an animal is all about. Fostering is an important
step in the transition from shelter/street to “happy ever after.” Loving
Arms Pet Placement is a foster-based rescue for dogs and cats and
is always in need of foster families.
Dog fosters are needed immediately! We have a number of dogs
boarding at the Kennel Klub who need a home environment to thrive.
Fostering is the perfect opportunity for people who love animals, but
are not ready for that long time commitment.
Tell Loving Arms Pet Placement rescue in what capacity you can
help. Can your home only accommodate small animals or can you
foster big dogs? Can you handle puppies and kittens or only mature
animals? Can you take more than one animal at once?
10 Lakeville | May 2017

There is a lot more to fostering than providing food, water and a safe
place to sleep. To attract potential adopters, the animal must be
people friendly. Include the animal in your daily home life inside your
home. Get to know them as individuals so you can share personality
traits, likes/dislikes, anecdotes. Treat the animal like your own and
train him/her, if possible.
Many animals have been abandoned and have trust issues. Some
animals are scared and need some good TLC. They need to learn what
caring and patience are, that hands can be gentle and not hurtful. Do
not keep the animal separate from other animals and your family.
They need to observe and get acclimated before deciding to join in.
Don’t chase or force an animal to cuddle or bond with you. Let them
join in at their own speed. For cats, leave food and water - and a litter
box - out for the cat. They will often come out at night when the house
is quiet and will eventually interact with you.
Foster care helps make animals more adoptable. Visit Loving Arms
Pet Placement website at www.lovingarmspetplacement.com or
visit us at Petsmart on Highway 6 and FM 529 each Saturday from
11 AM until 5 PM.
BABY BOOM
By Cheryl Conley,
TWRC Wildlife Center
Spring is the time when animals are looking for secluded locations
for giving birth and raising their babies. Sometimes these sites aren’t
so “human-friendly” like attics, chimneys or in your garage. The BEST
solution when this happens is to leave them alone until they move
out but if you must move them, please use HUMANE methods to do
so. If possible, postpone your tree trimming until later in the season.
Squirrels, birds and raccoons nest in trees and you could easily displace
baby animals by cutting down limbs and trees.
Here are a few tips to help save the babies this spring:
RE-NEST BABY BIRDS: If you’re like me, I was told growing up that
one should never touch a baby bird because the mom will reject it.
This is a myth. If you find a baby bird and it appears uninjured, place
it back in the nest. If you can’t reach the nest, you can place the bird
in a shallow basket or box and hang it as close to the nest as possible.
In most cases, mom will continue to care for it. If the bird is injured
or the mom isn’t feeding the baby, it’s time to intervene. Place the
baby in a small, covered container and bring it as soon as possible
to TWRC Wildlife Center. Do not attempt to feed it or give it water!
RACCOONS IN THE ATTIC: If you can’t wait until mom moves out
on her own, you can “encourage” her to move by leaving lights on in
the area all night. Place a radio in the area and play it loudly. It may
take a couple of days but she will soon tire of the light and the noise
and move her little ones. Then MAKE SURE you repair the opening
where she got in.
One other helpful information about raccoons. During late spring
and summer, you may see raccoons out during the day. Raccoons
are nocturnal EXCEPT if they are nursing moms. It is not uncommon
for females to be out during daylight hours looking for food. It does
NOT mean she has rabies.
FAWNS: It’s normal for a doe to “park” her fawn and leave it there for
hours while she goes off to eat. The fawns instinctively know that they
must stay there until she returns and unless she has been injured,
she WILL return. Since fawns are odorless, predators are unable to
pick up their scent. When the fawn is about a month old, it will begin
traveling with mom but in the meantime, please LEAVE IT ALONE!
11

BABY RABBITS: If the babies are not injured and the nest is intact, leave
them alone. Just like a mama doe, rabbits only visit their young two to
three times a day. Here’s a good test if you think the babies really have
been orphaned. Use sticks or trigs and make an “X” over the nest. If,
after 12 hours, the “X” is still in place, the bunnies are probably orphans
and you need to bring them to TWRC for care. Do not attempt to feed
them or give them water!
NATIONAL BROWN-BAG IT DAY
Happy National Brown-Bag-It Day! That’s right,
May 25th is the day to celebrate the good old art
of bringing your lunch from home. While checking
out new places to eat by your office can be fun and
sometimes grabbing a sandwich from the local deli
feels like the easiest thing to do, packing your own
lunch is a much healthier and less expensive choice.
Even those healthy-seeming salads from the local
cafe can hide some not-so-nutritious ingredients.
Packing your own lunch for work may be more time
consuming (although how long do you spend waiting
in line at the sandwich shop?), but with some
simple planning and a weekend trip to the grocery
store, it can become an easy part of your routine.
To help you on your way to a healthier lunchtime
habit, we’ve created five easy lunch options for
every day of the work week. With each bite, you’ll
feed your body, calm your mind and rejuvenate for
your afternoon!
Brown Bag #1: Kale salad with radish greens and
zesty lemon dressing
After you’ve made it through your hectic Monday
morning, treat yourself to this filling salad. Kale
is an antioxidant-packed superfood that will help
you detox from any weekend revelry, leaving your
immune system recharged for the week ahead,
while vitamin C-dense radish leaves rev up your
immune system. This zesty lemon shallot dressing
adds some inflammatory action for a revitalizing
and nutritious lunch.
Brown Bag #2: Avocado on toast with
seaweed chips
Spread some hummus on whole wheat or gluten-free
toast, then add a few slices of nutrient-packed avocado.
Sprinkle with sea salt, pepper and a dash of
cayenne for a spicy metabolism boost. This goes
great with fiber- and protein-rich seaweed chips.
Brown Bag #3: Fruit salad with a side
of mixed nuts
For a middle-of-the-week energy boost, try this
lunch of fruits and nuts. Choose immunity-boosting
citrus, fiber-filled apples, potassium-packed
bananas or antioxidant-dense berries. The natural
sugars of the fruits will give you a steady energy
boost. Go nuts with your nuts! Walnuts are filled
with omega-3’s and antioxidants; almonds pack
vitamin E, folic acid and tons of other vitamins
and minerals; pistachios are high in fiber; cashews
have bone-building magnesium; pecans can help
ward off heart disease; Brazil nuts are bursting with
selenium - and they’ll all give you enough protein
to power through the afternoon.
Brown Bag #4: Tomato-hummus sandwich
paired with apple slices and almond butter
This veggie sandwich swaps out the meat for a
thick slice of heart-healthy tomato. Add a few slices
of red or white onion and place between two slices
The Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF) will hold its 29 th Annual
B. F. Adam Golf Classic at BlackHorse Golf Club on May 11, 2017. For
the past 7 years, Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital, a Cy-Fair
tournament. Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson and IBI Group have
been Platinum Sponsors for more than 10 years.
One of the largest non-celebrity tournaments in the Houston area, the
B.F. Adam Golf Classic is a prime example of our trustees and community
business partners working together to raise scholarship funds for students
of Cypress Fairbanks ISD. This tournament has successfully raised
over 2.7 million dollars. CFEF was established in 1970 as a non-profit
to raise money to fund a scholarship for high school graduates in the
area. Over the past 46 years, the Foundation has grown tremendously
through the efforts of the Board of Trustees and the generosity of the
Cy-Fair Community. The Foundation has awarded more than $7 million
in scholarships to 1,400 graduating seniors. CFEF is a 501(c)3 non-profit
cycle of poverty is not having access to quality education or having
inadequate supplies for education. 145 million children in the world
do not have access to education, yet children still dream of becoming
doctors, lawyers and teachers. At ACTS of Wisdom we believe every
child, everywhere, should have access to education and to teachers
willing to take time to teach them. Our hope is that through bettering
the education opportunities of children, we might be able to help end
the cycle of poverty and begin to have peace in our world.
MEMORIAL WEEKEND GETAWAYS
Here are some celebrations across America that offered something
special in honor of the Memorial Day holiday:
ABOUT MEMORIAL DAY
Reason We Celebrate Memorial Day: A day of remembrance for those
who have died in our nation’s service.
History of the Memorial Day Holiday (U.S.):
• Originally called Decoration Day
• Memorial Day Holiday was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868
by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army
of the Republic
• Memorial Day first observed on May 30, 1868
• Congress changed the observed Memorial Day date in 1968 to the
last Monday in May to ensure a three day weekend
Formal Observance of Memorial Day:
• Wear red poppies on Memorial day to honor those who died
serving the United States during war
• At 3 PM local time on Memorial Day, Americans should pause
for a moment of silence or listen to “Taps”
• Visit cemeteries and place flags or flowers on the graves
of veterans for Memorial Day
• Visit a memorial
• Attend a Memorial Day parade to honor fallen heroes
Informal Observance of Memorial Day:
• Family and friends get together for a Picnic for Memorial Day
• Memorial Day is unofficial kick-off of summer season
Courtesy of: www.history.com/topics/holidays/memorial-day-history
Palm Springs, Calif.: For guaranteed summer weather
While most beach seasons are just beginning, Memorial Day marks
the end of bearable temps in the desert, so hotels and operators are
running specials for the holiday. Though other parts of California
will be in the midst of “May Gray” and “June Gloom,” Palm Springs
still has nonstop sunshine-plus dozens of vintage shops, acclaimed
restaurants and an enduring love for all things mid-century (its hotels
and private homes offer some of the best examples of 1950s modern
architecture in the country).
Washington, D.C.: For patriotism, pomp and circumstance
Washington D.C. is the most patriotic place to celebrate the holiday,
with a parade and plenty of pomp and circumstance taking
place during special military ceremonies. Arlington National Cemetery-which
celebrated its 150 th anniversary in May 2014-hosts a
wreath-laying ceremony at 11 AM on Memorial Day at the Tomb of the
Unknowns accompanied by performances from the U.S. Navy Band.
Saint Louis: For the ultimate treasure hunt
Don’t miss the largest flea market in the Midwest, Gypsy Caravan,
an annual Memorial Day event organized for the 44 th year by the St.
Louis Symphony Volunteer Association.
The Jersey Shore: For family fun and rides along the iconic Boardwalk
Steel Pier, Atlantic City’s popular oceanside amusement park,
debuted eight new rides in 2013. Outside Atlantic City, check out the
annual Wildwoods International Kite Festival, the largest in North
America, Friday thru Monday, an event that starts Friday at noon
with the “Unlocking of the Ocean” media event.
Austin: For boating season and outdoor fun
Head to Lake Travis to soak up some of Austin’s best weather of the
year, with plenty of sunshine and temperatures in the eighties. Memorial
Day kicks off boating season here, so the place to be is the lake.
PET INFORMATION
SCOOPAGE PET POOPAGE
It may not be a fabulous way to walk, but
please have courtesy to please scoop when
your pet poops during your walks. Throughout
the community trails, you will find areas to toss
your pet’s poopage and in some areas, there
are also bags. Carry your own grocery bags -
you’ll be recycling at the same time! Many of
your neighbors work hard with their lawncare
and landscaping. Come with a scooper and a
recycled grocery bag or anything else. Picking
up after your pets shows your respect for every
homeowner and our beautiful community. Pet
feces damages lawns and many residents are
working hard to maintaining their grass!
VETERINARY PUBLIC HEALTH DIVISION
(Formerly called Harris County Animal Control)
The Veterinary Public Health Division posts
photos of all animals found on their website
and updates it twice daily. If you have lost your
pet, please check this website,
www.hcphes.org/vph.
Have you lost a pet?
Start your search immediately, don’t wait to
make flyers.
Contact all possible animal control or animal
welfare agencies in the area. Visit each location
at least every other day.
Call your pet’s veterinarian and the microchip
company to make sure they have current contact
information for you. A citizen may try to call
the veterinarian’s office or microchip company
themselves from your pet’s tags.
Call all the veterinarians in your area to alert
them to the description of your lost pet in case
someone brings it to their clinic.
Check with your neighbors, especially families
with childrenand ask if they’ve seen a pet that
looks like yours.
Search your neighborhood on foot, your pet
maybe be nearby
but is injured and unable to get back home.
Leave a towel or article of clothing with your
scent on it outside of your home. Your pet
may be disorientated and will be attracted by
your scent.
Have you found a pet?
First, think of the animal as lost and not
abandoned and make every effort to reunite
the animal to an owner.
Contact the HCPH VPH office by telephone
and report the animal as found.
Bring the animal to the HCPH VPH facility or
check with a local veterinarian to scan the
animal for a microchip.
Lakeville | May 2017
Return to the place where you found the
animal and put up a found pet poster near
that location.
If you find the owner, especially off a newspaper
or website posting, ask them to provide
a picture of the animal and meet in a public
place like a police station.
More information about Microchips
& Microchip companies
A microchip is a small device (size of a grain
of rice) that is permanent and implanted with
a needle under the skin of pets.
Pets do not have to be given any pain medication
or anesthesia
to implant a microchip.
Microchips are not likely to move or need
repair if implanted correctly.
Microchips, when scanned, show a unique
code. The microchip must be registered with
the corresponding microchip manufacture to
record any owner and animal data.
Microchips do not work like GPS locators or
LoJack and cannot give a signal to find the
location of your lost pet.
HARRIS COUNTY LEASH LAW
Animals that are not properly restrained pose
a threat to all our residents. While you may
know your pet is friendly, an animal running
at someone who is walking by is very scary for
that person. Many children are afraid of animals
and become frightened, which could result in
the child getting hurt trying to avoid the animal.
Veterinary Public Health (formerly called Harris
County Animal Control) advises that “All dogs
and cats must be kept under restraint while
in the unincorporated areas of Harris County,
Texas. The custodian of a dog or cat is not
authorized to have, harbor or keep any unlicensed
dog or cat, nor to allow any dog or cat
to become a stray.”
Restraint is defined as “the control of a dog or
cat under the following circumstances:
1. When it is controlled by a line or leash not
more than six (6) feet in length, if the line or l
eash is held by a human being, who is capable
of controlling or governing the dog or cat in
question
2. When it is within a fully enclosed vehicle
3. When it is on the premise of the custodian
and the animal does not have access
to sidewalk or street.”
While it may be nice to have your animal out in
the yard while you work or play, it is against the
law, unless the animal is properly restrained.
Let’s all help keep our community a safe and
comfortable place for all our residents by being
responsible pet owners. This will not only protect
anyone who may be walking or bicycling
in the area, but also the pet owner who could
be held legally responsible or possibly sued
for failing to properly restrain their pet. For a
complete list of regulations, call
281-999-3191 or visit www.hcphes.org/vph.
CONSIDERING GETTING A NEW DOG?
…or if you know friends and family who are,
please consider and suggest rescuing vs.
buying a dog from a breeder. We have every
breed of purebred dog available in our Texas
pounds and shelters, in great quantities.
This is because of the complete lack of any
regulations or limit on breeding in Texas.
• Approximately 30-40% of euthanasias in
pounds involve purebred animals.
• Mixed breeds in Texas stand almost no
chance of making it out of the pounds alive.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with
these dogs; they just had the misfortune of
being owned by people who did not provide
for their needs and care and obviously had
no real commitment to their pet.
• Countless numbers of people turn their
own dogs in to high-kill shelters, dump
them rurally in the middle of nowhere or let
them roam and stray. It reflects a mentality
that most dog lovers do not understand.
• When you or someone you know considers
adopting a dog, please check out one of our
five local animal shelters:
1. BARC - Bureau of Animal Regulation and
Care i.e. Houston’s animal control or city
pound
2. Harris County Animal Control
3. Houston SPCA
4. Houston Humane Society
5. CAP - Citizens for Animal Protection
organizations:
PREPARE FOR
SUMMER HEAT NOW!
We’re weeks away from sweltering temperatures,
hurricane warnings and bug invasions. Before
summer hits at full force, make sure you and your
home are prepared:
Give Your Air Conditioner a Checkup
• Replace your air filter to make sure the whole
system runs smoothly.
• Clear debris on or around your vents or exhausts
and clean off any dirt
from the main unit outside.
• Install programmable thermostats.
Test for Ventilation Leaks
• First, look for actual leaks: drafts in your windows and doors.
• Check your attic insulation for leaks and gaps.
Set Up a Barrier for Bugs
• Check caulking around windows and doors, fix any drafts/gaps
with new weather stripping and caulking.
• Spray outdoor perimeter with a pesticide, along with baseboards,
sinks, windows and doors. Change Your Ceiling Fan Direction
• Run Ceiling Fans Counter-Clockwise for Summer Savings.
Prevent Water Damage
• Make sure your windows and doors are properly sealed and caulked, too.
• Test gutters to look for water coming out of any places it shouldn’t.
• Inspect your roof (remove any debris and leaves while you’re up there).
In the FINALS, Fair Creek came out strong with constant pressure
in Cinco Ranch’s defensive end of the ice. Fair Creek’s only 2 goals
of the game were scored by Sam Robinson 8 seconds apart in the
2 nd period. Fair Creek and Kingwood Senior Robinson’s 1 st goal was
a one timer off a hustling Cy-Fair Junior Tyler McLeroy’s pinpoint
pass. Robinson’s game winner came only 8 seconds later as he
tallied his second goal from a lazer pass from Cy-Creek Senior
Jaxon Sharp, which beat Cinco Ranch’s goalie Randy Miller. Miller
was stout all night long stopping 35 shots and only allowing 2 to
cross the goal line to keep Cinco in the game. Fair Creek ended up
out shooting Cinco Ranch 37-13!
This is Fair Creek’s 3 rd City Championship in the past 10 years….
Jaxon Sharp’s 2 nd City Championship in his 4 year Varsity career,
BOY SCOUTS
BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA
COPPERHEAD DISTRICT
For 100 years, Scouting programs have
instilled in youth the values found in the
Scout Oath and Scout Law. Today, these
values are just as relevant in helping youth
grow to their full potential as they were in
1910. Scouting helps youth develop academic
skills, self-confidence, ethics, leadership
skills, outdoor skills and citizenship
skills that influence their adult lives.
The Boy Scouts of America provides youth
with programs and activities that allow
them to:
• Try new things.
• Provide service to others.
• Build self-confidence.
• Reinforce ethical standards.
Scouting provides youth with a sense that
they are important as individuals while
promoting activities that lead to personal
responsibility and high self-esteem. As a result,
when hard decisions have to be made,
peer pressure can be resisted and the right
choices can be made.
Scouting provides a rewarding experience
for boys ages 5 to 21. Scouting through the
local Packs and Troops teach outdoor and
life skills which help our youth Be Prepared.
Your area is serviced by the BSA Sam Houston
NATIONAL MILITARY APPRECIATION MONTH 2017
National Military Appreciation Month (NMAM) is celebrated every May
and is a declaration that encourages U.S. citizens to observe the month
in a symbol of unity. NMAM honors the current and former members
of the U.S. Armed Forces, including those who have died in the pursuit
of freedom. The month of May is characterized by six national observances
which highlights the contributions of those who have served.
The 6 National Observances during
National Military Appreciation Month
Loyalty Day
Sunday, May 1, 2017
Kicks off our Nation’s month-long celebration of military appreciation.
It is a day set aside for the reaffirmation of loyalty to the United States
and to reflect on the proud heritage of our American freedom.
Public Service Recognition Week (PSRW)
(Celebrated the first full week in May)
A time set aside to honor the men and women who serve our nation
as federal, state, county and local government employees and ensure
that our government is the best in the world.
Victory in Europe Day AKA V-E Day or VE Day
Monday, May 8, 2017
May 8, 1945 is the day the Germans throughout Europe
unconditionally surrendered to WW II Allies.
Friday before Mother’s Day)
activities. Recognizes the important role our military families play
in keeping our Armed Forces strong and our country safe.
Armed Forces Day
Saturday, May 20, 2017 (Celebrated the
third Saturday in May every year)
A single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military
members for their patriotic service in support of our country. This
day honors everyone serving in the U.S. Military branches; Air Force,
Army, Coast Guard, Marines, Navy.
Memorial Day
Monday, May 29, 2017 (A Federal holiday observed on the
last Monday in May)
A remembrance of our veterans. Commemorates the men
and women who died while in military service.
History of NMAM
In 1999, Senator John McCain introduced legislation to designate
the month of May, National Military Appreciation Month. Both the
Senate and House of Representatives adopted resolutions calling
for Americans to recognize and honor U.S. Service Members during
NMAM. These proclamations also urge the President to issue a proclamation
calling on the people of the United States to observe NMAM.
