1. What are the factors of ageing?
Several factors lead to ageing. Genetic factors – responsible
for the rate and character of ageing, Metabolism – free
radicals, Mechanisms controlling the function of cells and
extracellular matrix, Environmental and behavioural
factors.
Q2. Why does the skin age?
The process of ageing is triggered both by internal and
external factors that promote oxidation and inflammatory
processes such as:
• Environmental pollution
• Diet
• Systemic inflammation
• Cigarette smoking
• Capillary degeneration
• Lack of exercise
Q3. How can it be prevented?
Antioxidants are vital to prevent ageing.
Q4. Which antioxidants do you recommend?
There are variety of antioxidants available in the market
such as Vitamin A, Vitamin E, carotenoids (α and β-carotene,
lycopene, lutein, astaxanthin).
Q6. How does Epicatechin affect our ageing process?
Epicatechin improves our collagen production (antiwrinkle
effect), reduces oxidative stress, reduces lipid
peroxidation, protects against excessive UV radiation
(reduction of photoageing), reduces insulin resistance,
normalizes blood pressure, reduces atherosclerosis risk
and improves dermal blood flow (better microcirculation
and oxygen supply).
Q7. What does Asthaxantin do?
Asthaxantin reduces risk of stroke, protects skin of UV
radiation, improves muscular functions, vision, immune
system, memory, functioning of the liver, metabolism,
kidneys, pancreas, regulation of arterial pressure, reduces
insulin resistance and enhances fertility.
Q8. What is the result of epicatechin and
asthaxantin?
Esthechoc is the anti-ageing combination of epicatechins
and asthaxantin in the form of dark chocolate. It
will result in improved bioavailability and effectiveness,
and skin metabolism (oxidation and Inflammation biomarkers).
Q9. When is the change visible after consuming
Esthechoc?
It takes about 3 to 4 weeks for visible changes.
Q10. Is there a specific diet or time to be followed for
GET HANDSOME
THE EASY WAY
Who doesn’t like looking good?
Right...
Well looking good needs effort, time, and a few tweaks to help
you look your very best. Looking good doesn’t always refer to
women, it does to an extent but right now it’s all about the guys.
Here are a few pointers, which will help you join the league of
extremely handsome men:
PERSONAL GROOMING
Unkept stubble, bad skin or a really long vagabond like beard will not
take you anyway close to being handsome, and that’s where personal
grooming not only a must it is a priority. Imagine yourself walking
into a room with maybe a lot of pretty girls and you are looking like
an absolute disaster, you will definitely be a loner there. You need
to look as well as exhume your part of being the most eligible guy
around. See to your hair, it’s not vanity to use a good shampoo and
conditioner, see to the dandruff too. Use sunscreen to help your skin,
the rugged look is a favourite among the ladies but your skin needs a
guard against tan and a bit of care too. Wash off facial oils as often
as possible and keep the pores clean. Grooming is not just for
female importance, it is for general purpose.
KEEP YOUR CLOTHES FLUFF-FREE
Looking good to the eye is a big impression, and if your clothes follow
suit it would help you immensely especially around the women. Make
sure there are no loose threads, hair, or fur of your pet on your clothes.
Invest in a lint roller or a firm clothes brush to keep your clothes flufffree.
BODY LANGUAGE
Another very important factor that a man should keep in mind on his
way to getting the best look in town. The first step is to never keep
your hands in your pockets, as it gives the onlooker the impression
that you are uncomfortable and unsure of yourself. Secondly, your
14

hands can be your worst enemy so try and keep them calm
and steady, for e.g. crossing your arms is a very protective posture
done normally when you are cold, nervous or on guard.
Same goes with your legs, avoid rapid leg vibration whilst
seated. Thirdly, make sure you keep your eyes in level while
talking to someone, especially if it is a lady, if you are trying to
get a quick stare at her it portrays you in bad light. Even whilst
walking down the corridor at work keep your eyes straight in
line of your direction, distracted vision makes you look disinterested.
Fourthly, a firm handshake
is an absolute golden rule of body
language. Don’t be the guy whose
hand shake is like holding a ‘palm
full of dead fish’, instead always grip
the other person’s hand firmly and
confidently. And lastly, always smile...
an important body language pointer.
Remember, confident people smile
because they have nothing to worry
about.
SPRING CLEAN
A very apt point, it is a space meant
for fresh starts. Spring cleaning is a
good time to let go of all your old,
over-grown, faded, ill-fitting clothes.
It also helps you to want to lose
weight, de-stress and get into the colours
and frame that give that ‘WOW’
factor. And you can always donate
these clothes to those in need and
feel happy for your good deed done.
NEW DATE GAME
Do a little research before taking a
girl out on a date, locate a place which is not too crowded or
lonely, and try not to look at your phone while on your date.
Keep the dialogue interactive, monologues are boring so
don’t boast.
Do not try to be over-baring; space in any relationship is a
huge imperative. ‘Communication is the mother of good relationships’,
so keep it flowing even after the first date. Make
sure your chemistry is spot on.
PAD TOUCHES
To look good your surroundings should also look the same, a
clean and organised home is a reflection of yourself. A renovation
can be time-consuming, but there are always other tips
to help you de-clutter your pad and make it worth living in.
Here are your tips to de-clutter:-
• Set a goal
• Three box method (Keep, Get rid of, and Storage)
• Have a garage sale
Buy something new for your
abode, which will help you
transform the look and the
feel of your home like a wall
clock or a vintage painting, a
lampshade which gives the
room a dual lighting effect.
These small changes can be
of great use to you and your
pad.
STAND – UP TALL
Posture is the first sign of the
sort of person you really are
even before you talk or shake
hands. Try as much to stand
up straight and tall as a good
posture helps your spine to
a big extent. Slouching leads
to your belly jutting out and
a very lazy stance. A tip to
correct your posture, stand
straight up and walk erect
is by walking with a book
placed on your head.
Hope these tips make you the look, feel, and believe that
nothing is impossible.... Remember an ‘original is always better
than a copy’.
Your
RETINOL
Every Day
Anti-Ageing
Heroes
What is it?
Retinol (the entire vitamin A molecule) can be broken
down into more potent compounds, referred to as retinoids.
Although the terms vitamin A, retinol, and retinoid are
used interchangeably, each has its own distinctive actions,
regulations and potency. For example, some forms of retinol
can be used freely in cosmetics, while others (retinoids) can
be obtained only by prescription. Originally an anti-acne
treatment, its rejuvenating benefits were soon noticed. When
it’s absorbed into the skin, it is broken down and converted into
retinoic acid which is the compound that affects skin cells and
their behaviour.
There was a time was when anti-ageing skin care
basically meant moisturisers with a richer base
for ‘mature’ complexions. Nowadays there’s a
plethora of active ingredient-rich products known
as ‘dermacosmeceuticals’ which claim to do much,
much more. But with so much choice, and without a
PhD, how do we know what to go for in our everyday
routine? Science and testing demonstrate that the
key lies in the ingredients. So here are the top five to
help keep your skin glowing, starting today.
Hero because?
“The first-line treatment for anti-ageing is a topical vitamin A
derivative, over-the-counter retinol,” says top UAE skin care
specialist Dr. Ali Singel. The current superstar of skincare,
retinol is an extremely effective cell-communicating ingredient,
as well as a powerful anti-oxidant. This means it can literally
connect to almost any skin cell and ‘tell’ it to behave like a
healthy, younger skin, thereby reducing fine lines and wrinkles.
Watch out for?
All kinds of retinol can cause irritation and photosensitivity.
Although this is more likely with the prescription only retinoids,
it may be sensible to build up their use gradually. Choose good
quality skin care products to reduce the chance of irritation
from retinol. And don’t forget sunscreen.
Great place to find it?
Mesoestetic Collagen 360 Intensive Cream– An anti
ageing, hydrating face cream is excellent for reducing fine
wrinkles. This powerful restorative cream has been
developed from enriched marine collagen and boasts
Retinol and Ascorbyl Glucoside as its primary
active substances. Loaded with other goodies too, its
potent formula stimulates skin regeneration, boosts
the formation of new collagen and protects the threedimensional
structure of the dermal matrix. To you this
means it helps reduce wrinkles and discolouration while
restoring firmness and increasing elasticity and volume.
We absolutely love it.
AVAILABLE AT British Lasik & Cosmetic (Dubai)
“I swear by this product. By speeding
up cell turnover and boosting collagen
production, retinol helps with numerous
skin issues, including free-radical
damage, improving discolouration and
managing acne and eczema. It really
does provide truly impressive results.”
– Kate Winslet
18

HYALURONIC ACID (HA)
What is it?
Scientifically speaking, hyaluronic acid (also known as
hyaluronan) is a glycosaminoglycan, a type of molecule
composed partly of sugars. Your body makes hyaluronic acid
naturally and puts it in connective tissue throughout your body.
A structural component of skin that gives the dermis substance,
strength and tightness, it holds an incredible amount of moisture:
one gram of HA is able to hold up to six litres of water.
Hero because?
Sadly, age (as well as poor lifestyle habits) causes you to make
less HA and that’s why, over time, loss of firmness and pliability
ensues. So using it stops the dreaded dehydration, improves
your skin’s moisture content and at the same time strengthens
the skin’s barrier – the outer layers of your skin. Voila – plumper,
smoother skin. But, with HA, that’s not all you get. We know that
just about everything, from sun damage and acne to sensitive
skin and rosacea, can lead to a damaged barrier, so this repair
work can help those issues too.
Watch out for?
Nothing really… It’s a natural product already found in your
body so adverse effects would be unusual.
Great place to find it?
Mesoestetic Stem Cell Nano iller Lip Contour – For intensive
skin rehydration and moisturising.
Ahhhh. That’s your lips heaving a sigh of gratitude when
this moisture rich cream mask soothes,
hydrates and plumps your lips. This
is especially great to get ‘younger
looking lips’, lighten the vertical lines
around the mouth and slow down the
ageing process in this area. The plant
stem cell acts as a regenerator, by
stimulating collagen.
The Hyaluronic Acid fills the
thinner areas to give a filler-like
effect. The natural polysaccharide
performs a support function for
collagen and elastin fibres and is able
to retain a thousand times its weight
in water.
NEWYOU LOVES
Unveil inner radiance by investing in a beauty liquid
supplement, HyaluronFiller, which not only beautifies but
also strengthens you from the inside. This is a liquid beauty
supplement formulated especially for women over 25 who
are losing skin elasticity. This is a natural food supplement
based on the latest scientific insights, which combine
valuable micronutrients with liquid hyaluronic acid.
AVAILABLE AT
Mason De Joelle (Dubai), Specialised Medical Center (Abu
Dhabi)
“I started using Stem Cell
Nanofillers a year ago when my
girl gang recommended it. This is
the first filling-effect cream based
on plant stem cells extract and
Hyaluronic Acid. ”
– Jennifer Garner
19

PEPTIDES
What are they?
Peptides are proteins composed of long or short chains of
amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein.
According to Dr. Maria Angelo-Khattar, MD, MSc
Dermatology and Director of Aesthetica Clinic, they form
a protective, moisture retaining film over the skin’s surface.
Peptides occur naturally, but skin scientists are now creating
synthetic peptides, specifically for anti-ageing treatments,
to help reverse or delay the ageing process mainly by
increasing collagen production.
Heroes
because?
The synthetics also
carry hydrating,
repairing and
renewing molecules
to skin cells.
Dr. Maria Angelo-Khattar
Watch out for?
They need about
four weeks to
provide maximum
benefits. Not
needed for under
35s as your own
peptides are active
enough. The science
is still young so
research into the
full potential of
peptides is ongoing.
Great place to find them?
Nimue Skin Refirmer –
A.K.A ‘Botox in a Jar’ - this is one of our faves because of
its high tech and multi-functional formula. By combining
scientifically engineered peptides
(Polypeptide, Tetrapeptide, Octapeptide
and Hexapeptide) and other proven
ingredients, this cream combats
wrinkles, expression lines and sagging on
the face, neck and décolleté. It’s ideal for
all skin types and can be used day and
night. The more the better we say, if it
helps with the dreaded droop.
AVAILABLE AT Point Zero Flotation Centre (DIFC–Dubai,
Khalifah City A – Abu Dhabi)
“Most peptides work as moisture-binding
agents and almost all of them act as tiny cell
couriers which race around switching on
repair, cell renewal and collagen production.”
– Sharon Stone
ANTIOXIDANTS
What are they?
Natural substances found throughout nature including in food.
Research shows there are dozens of effective antioxidants
including our hero Vitamin A (Retinol), as well as vitamins C
and E and coenzyme 10, grapeseed oil, green tea, lycopene,
resveratrol, selenium and zinc.
Heroes because?
Anti-oxidants are also known in derma circles as ‘the fixers’,
because that’s what they do. “Antioxidants work by speeding
up the skin's natural repair systems and by directly inhibiting
further damage”, adds Dr. Maria.
They fight oxidation, the process that causes metal to rust
and fruit to discolour and in us, the destruction of collagen
and elastin. Good quality antioxidants turn harmful free
radicals–into harmless compounds, thereby stopping them from
destroying DNA, elastin, and collagen.
Watch out for?
Use a blend. As different antioxidants tackle free radicals in
different ways, they’re more powerful in gangs. For added
benefit, make sure to eat plenty of antioxidants as well. In this
case, what's good for your skin is also
good for your body. And if you’re sensitive
to certain foods, you may be sensitive to
certain antioxidants derived from those
foods.
GROWTH FACTORS
What is it?
Every cell type in your skin secretes certain proteins known
as Growth Factors (GF). As we age, our bodies produce lower
levels of natural growth factors resulting in more breakdown
of collagen which is the foundational support to the skin.
Growth Factors are the natural proteins in our body that are
responsible for maintaining healthy skin structure and function
and a variety of cellular activities such as cellular growth,
proliferation and differentiation.
Hero because?
Growth Factors act as natural ‘messenger’ proteins that allow
communication between cells in our body and are the control
mechanism for all wound healing and maintaining a youthful
appearance. These growth factors are responsible for helping
to reverse the visible effects of chronological ageing and
premature ageing due to environmental factors.
Great place to find it?
Watch out for?
The use of stem cells in skin care and
aesthetic medicine has generated a lot of
excitement. However, there are substantial
differences between growth factors, stem
cells, plant stem cells and other related
technologies.
Importantly, plant stem cells, the most
commonly used in topical creams and
serums, are not like human stem cells.
Plant stem cells appear to provide
some modest improvements in the
skin, but they are primarily formulated
in conjunction with other actives or
peptides. They are not making growth
factors or activating wound-healing the
way stem cell technology does.
AQ Lash– 30-Day-Treatment
For eyelashes and eyebrows that are fuller, longer and darker –
naturally.
AQ is all about growth factors. It is a safe and effective
eyelash treatment serum that uses patented growth factor
technology to help you achieve stronger, longer and darker
lashes and reduce breakage.
Unlike other growth treatments that are loaded with
harsh chemicals, AQ's serum uses patented growth factors to
strengthen your lash and brow hair. We found this treatment
highly effective at producing stronger, thicker eyelashes so you
can purchase it with confidence that it'll perform.
Products in the AQ Skin Technology range contain a
concentration of over 40% of growth factors. It is quite a
cocktail and AQ says that it uses a “cell sorting technology” to
ensure that the formula only includes growth factors that are
beneficial to the skin. The rest of the formula is simple-a couple
of vitamins, lactic acid and glycerin. Quite simply, it works.
Anything else to look out for?
✓ Topical products obviously don’t give you the same dramatic
results that surgical procedures or Botox and dermal fillers
offer but they can certainly help if used consistently.
✓ So far no one has found the one miracle ingredient for
age reversal. For example, despite retinol's superstar
status, it does not eliminate the need for a well-formulated
sunscreen, for an alpha hydroxy acid or beta hydroxy
acid product for exfoliation, for a gentle cleanser, or for a
serum or moisturiser loaded with antioxidants, other cellcommunicating
ingredients, and skin-identical substances.
✓ Keeping skin healthy and young requires a combination of
ingredients and products that work together to give your skin
exactly what it needs. Together, all of these types of products
and their various ingredients combine to create a powerful
skin-care routine that will give you a radiant complexion that
looks vibrant.
✓ Sales pressure and misleading information might have made
you believe that you must use products from the same brand
to see results. Some brands are obviously better than others
and this may work for you. But it is absolutely fine to mix
and match products from different brands, and sometimes it
might be necessary for you to do so.
✓ Do checkout the ingredients on the label and see that that
the ones you want aren’t listed near the very end, as that
means the product doesn’t contain much, and so you may
not see much benefit.
✓ Do check with your dermatologist if you are pregnant or
have any particular skin conditions or sensitivities.
✓ Do we really need to tell you not to smoke? And avoid eating
junk?
HEALTHY LIFESTYLE
THIS RAMADAN
RAMADAN, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is
a period of retrospection, charity and above all a commitment
to the religious responsibilities. The most
challenging task in this period is that of ‘fasting’. Ramadan,
entails the rigors of an all-day fast, with soaring temperatures
which can take a toll on your health. Team Cure & Care
gets you a few expert advices and tips from nutritionists on
healthy lifestyle this Ramadan.
Fasting for Ramadan, can in fact be the ideal time to cut back
on refined foods and bad habits like smoking, but unfortunately
most people aren’t quick to grab this opportunity. On
the contrary, people tend to put on weight during Ramadan
as a result of overeating and the fact that the typical iftar meal
includes a plethora of heavy, fatty and high calorie foods, just
adds up the number on your weighing scale. Many seem to
be of the attitude that they “deserve” an excessively indulgent
meal as a reward after having the patience to fast all day. This
is not only extremely detrimental to your health, but it also
kind of defies the point of fasting to enforce self-discipline
and self-control.
Nutritionists make us aware that fasting, gives the digestive system
a chance to rest and let the body use its fat reserves for energy,
however, it can also lead to dizziness and fatigue. Many
nutritional experts claim that consuming sugary sweets and
meals loaded with fats and carbohydrates are critical especially
after a long fasting period. It could slow down your metabolism;
also over-eating is a complete ‘NO’. Having a balanced diet is
of utmost importance as it helps you gain good health, sustains
an active life and helps you attain 100% of the benefits that the
month of Ramadan brings.
“Ramadan is a Holy month of devotion, reflection and selfcontrol
for Muslims worldwide. As a medical doctor, my annual
advice to those fasting is to make sure to consume a balanced
diet, drink plenty of water and get sufficient rest” says Dr. Issam
Badaoui, Medical Director at International SOS.
This Ramadan, it could be a perfect opportunity for you to
make a small yet a lasting change and adapt a healthier lifestyle.
Here are some simple guidelines to help you have a HAPPY ‘N’
HEALTHY Ramadan:
DO
• BREAK YOUR FAST WITH SOMETHING NUTRI-
TIOUS
After fasting all day long, you should at least make sure you
break your fast with something healthy and nutrient dense
foods like dates, fresh juice or laban. It is extremely common
to break a fast with dates, as per the Islamic tradition.
26

Dates are naturally high in sugar, vitamins and minerals and
are ideal for an instant energy boost. To avoid the post sugar
rush slump, make sure you combine your dates with a protein
source like nuts, as these slower the release of sugar into the
blood.
• INCREASE FLUID INTAKE
Don’t forget to drink plenty of water during the entire month of
Ramadan. High temperature can also make you sweat more, so
remember to keep yourself hydrated. An intake of at least 8 to
10 glasses of water from Iftar till Suhoor (the pre- dawn meal),
spread in small quantities, should help replenish your body fluids.
You can also increase water intake by eating hydrating food
such as watermelon, tomato, cucumber, etc. Include fresh fruit
juices to help combat lethargy.
• EAT A HEALTHY & BALANCED MEAL
Nutritionists strongly recommend a balanced meal for Iftar
containing carbohydrates and proteins. Choose whole grains
which provide the body with energy and fibre. Enjoy grilled or
baked lean meat, skinless chicken & fish, to get a good portion
of healthy protein during Iftar, along with rice, pasta, potatoes
which are sources of carbohydrates. Take pleasure in your meal
and avoid indulging overeating by eating slowly. Incorporate
plenty of vegetables, fruits & nuts to provide vital vitamins and
nutrients.
For Suhoor, choose the right foods to sustain you though the
fast. Suhoor should be wholesome meal providing you with
energy to last until iftar. Eating complex carbohydrates such as
fruits and vegetables, beans, chickpeas and lentils, whole wheat
grains such as Burghul will provide you with long-lasting source
of energy throughout the day. Complex carbohydrates are absorbed
slowly in your body ensuring you have a stable level of
glucose in your blood stream.
Adopt healthy cooking methods during Ramadan such as grilling,
boiling, baking, simmering and roasting. Just remember to
eat slowly, chew thoroughly and avoid drinking water during
meals.
To burn extra calories, make sure to be active by at least going
for a walk every day. Recommended time is 2 hours after Iftar
which allows you time to digest your meal. Make sure to hydrate
immediately after your session and eat slowly to replenish your
fluid and nutrients.
DON’T
• EAT FRIED, PROCESSED & FATTY FOODS
Feasting on heavy greasy food will make you feel bloated and
is definitely unhealthy. Fried foods lead to constipation, indigestion,
and gas. Instead, choose foods that are prepared using
healthier cooking methods such as grilled, steamed, boiled, or
baked. Foods to avoid are the heavily-processed, fast-burning
foods that contain refined carbohydrates in the form of sugar,
white flour, etc. as well as, of course, too much fatty foods like
cakes, biscuits, chocolates and sweets. So also, avoid salty foods,
canned or processed foods, salted nuts, and pickles, because
these will increase your thirst during the fasting period.
• CONSUME CAFFEINE AND FIZZY DRINKS
If you are a coffee drinker, our nutritionist’s advice is to try and
reduce your coffee consumption two weeks prior to the Holy
month of Ramadan in order to let your body get accustomed
to the change. Caffeine in coffee and fizzy drinks lead to mood
swings, headaches, sleepiness and gas. Also, caffeine is a diuretic
and stimulates faster water loss through urine output causing
loss of valuable mineral salts. If you love to drink coffee during
Ramadan, have a cup one to two hours after having a healthy
balanced Iftar.
• BREAK YOUR FAST WITH A CITRUS FRUIT
As a cautionary measure try avoiding breaking your fast with a
citrus fruit as it can hamper your stomach, which is filled with
acidic gastric juices throughout the day. In place of a sweet lime
or an orange have a vegetable or lentil soup, this will hydrate
your body and also be gentle to your tummy too.
• EXERCISE
Ramadan does present a bit of a challenge when it comes to
maintaining an exercise routine. Some people tend to be more
sedentary during Ramadan. The trick is to focus on maintaining
your current fitness level, not improving it. You can still
work out while fasting (although it is preferable to do so right
before breaking a fast, so that you can re-fuel and avoid getting
dehydrated), but just do so at a lower intensity than you’re
used to and you’ll be fine. In fact health experts recommend
light exercise between 3 pm and Maghreb time can help you
burn body fat which allows you to lose or maintain your weight.
27

• OVER EAT
A large, heavy meal that is difficult to digest is the last thing your
body wants after a day of fasting from food and water. And while it
may seem like a good idea at the time, overeating will leave you feeling
bloated, and lethargic. Highly not recommended. Instead, have
a light meal at iftar, split your meal into smaller portions and have
the rest later.
• DEVOUR IN SWEETS
Delightful sweets in Ramadan are tough to resist. To avoid consuming
too many calories, make sure you always practice portion
control and moderation. Eating sweets immediately after Iftar will
increase the size of your stomach and cause a delay in digestion. It
will also cause instability in the blood glucose level, which will lead
to you craving for more sweets. That’s why, nutritionist recommend
to have sweets 2-3 hours after Iftar.
• SKIP SUHOOR
Just as breakfast is the most important meal of the day, ‘Suhour’ is
equally important during Ramadan. The pre-dawn meal helps your
body stay hydrated and fuelled up on energy and nutrients until
your next meal at iftar. It also helps you avoid overeating when you
break your fast at sunset.
GENERAL TIPS TO KEEP YOU HEALTHY THIS RAMADAN:
• Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water daily from Iftar to Suhoor to
prevent dehydration and constipation.
• Limit your intake of fried foods, and foods high in fats and
sugar. Avoid foods high in salt such as pickles, salty crackers
and nuts, and canned foods.
• Sleep for 6-8 hours a day to get sufficient mental and physical
rest. Less sleep means you will feel tired during the day which
in turns leads to less productivity and activity.
• If you suffer from gastric ulcers avoid spices, coffee, carbonated
beverages and fried food.
• If you suffer from continuous hunger, eat food rich in fiber
which is slow to absorb.
• If you suffer from fullness or gastro-intestinal discomfort after
eating, chew your food very well and allow enough time for
your meal. Don’t overeat.
UNHEALTHY HABITS TO AVOID:
• Try not to drink excess fluids at night for fear of thirst during
the day. This will lead to abdominal distress.
• Avoid eating large amounts of food at Iftar which will lead to
extreme fullness.
• Try and avoid having a large quantity of starters and sweets, or
drinks with added sugar as this will result to calorie increase
resulting to weight gain.
• Don’t consume a wide variety of food at night or Suhoor, especially
foods high in fat, with the notion that they will prevent
hunger pangs during the day.
With a better view and choices, we hope this Ramadan will be a
great opportunity to focus on bringing back a balanced and healthy
lifestyle. Just remember: whatever you decide to eat, a balanced food
plan containing healthy ingredients, cooked right will help you enjoy
Iftar and Suhoor while giving you good health and more energy. Being
mindful of how you fast and how you break your fast can help to
improve your overall health. Hence, bear in mind to make intelligent
choices in what to eat and how to eat.
Have a healthy, peaceful and happy Ramadan!
• Have a balanced varied Iftar which incorporates dates, soup,
salad, a main dish, fruits and a small piece of Ramadan sweet.
• Include light exercises. Walk or participate in some kind of
physical activity.
• Try not to drink too much coffee/tea especially at Suhoor as it
can increase fluids lost through urination.
• Have Suhoor to fill your body with energy and help regulate
your blood sugar. Don’t overeat.
• If you suffer from constipation while fasting, increase your
fluid intake and eat food rich in fibre.
• If you suffer from heartburn after iftar, avoid fried food and
food high in fat.
Skincare - A Priority
Skincare is an essential part of personal grooming, hygiene,
and well-being of the human body. Proper skin care is of
utmost importance because our skin is the largest barrier
against infection that we possess. Keeping our skin healthy
and moist keeps this barrier strong. Proper skincare helps
to keep our outermost surface layer of skin intact. This layer
maintains the skin’s overall hydration and serves as primary
defence against the environment. So, keeping it strong and
healthy is critical. Harsh products, such as cleansers, face
washes, etc. can damage the outer layer by stripping essential
moisture and oils too. Using a proper skincare regime daily
can help you preserve your flawless complexion for the future.
Develop a skin care routine that cleanses, moisturises and protects
your skin. All skin types need a sound routine which will
be beneficial in the long run. Normal, oily, and sensitive skin
types can benefit from a gentle, non-drying cleanser. Using an
exfoliant and broad-spectrum protection from sun damage
can also benefit. Choose cleansers that will remove dirt and
bacteria while moisturising the skin. Even if you are not prone
to breakouts, a topical exfoliate will remove sun damaged
skin and keep it supple as you age. Finally, using a sunscreen
protects your skin against harsh UV rays which will prevent
wrinkles and skin cancer.
Here are 10 simple steps to an essential skin care routine:
1. Makeup Remover & Oil Cleanser
In order to start treating your skin the right way, you have to
remove all of the dirt, impurities, makeup, and sweat which
have accumulated on your face during the day. The importance
of removing your makeup before going to sleep is that
it can cause extensive damage to your skin while sleeping. A
32
makeup remover helps to wipe your face clean, moisturizes
it, and helps your skin breathe. Ever woke up and found your
eyeliner is still on even after using a cleanser? You won’t after
using an oil cleanser. Massage the oil cleanser with dry hands
on a dry face. The massage oil loosens the dirt and makeup
and the water will help wash off the oil. Make sure your hands
and your face are not wet or even after washing your skin will
feel oily. With careful massaging on the congested areas, even
black heads and clogged pores can be cleared.
2. Water-Based Cleanser
Now comes the double cleansing section. Confused? Double
cleansing is basically after you use an oil-based cleanser and
then you use a water-based cleanser. Both these cleansers are
essential in cleaning your skin and leaving it soft and supple.
Dermatologists, aestheticians, and savvy skincare women
worldwide understand and practice this absolutely critical
step for an effective skincare regime. In short, this ‘double
cleansing’ is a 2-step process that includes first an oil-based
cleanser, which can be in solid or liquid form (depending on
the cleanser), and can be washed or wiped off. The oil-based
cleanser removes impurities including sebum, sunscreen, and
makeup. A water-based cleanser can be either foaming or
non-foaming and is used to remove impurities that are waterbased,
i.e. sweat and dirt. In simple terms, you need both
oil-based and water-based cleansers to gently and thoroughly
draw out oil and water-based impurities.
3. Exfoliation
Exfoliation involves the removal of the oldest dead skin cells
on the skin’s outermost surface. The etymology of the word
exfoliate comes from the Latin word ‘exfoliare’ which means

to strip off leaves. Exfoliation is achieved through either mechanical
or chemical means. Exfoliation helps blemished skin
by removing facial oil trapped in the dry skin which leads to
further breakouts of blemishes. For post-breakout (red/dark
marks), an increase in exfoliation will help the marks disappear
as the removal of damaged cells gives way for new skin.
Clogged pores (or black heads), a little clogged bump on the
skin, all can be done away with a good exfoliation because
the more you remove surface dry skin cells the less oil will stay
trapped inside and congest the pores. Exfoliation also helps
hyper pigmentation, i.e. the brown spots, that develops on
the skin with age, pregnancy, hormonal changes, or genetics.
4. Skin Toners/Softeners/Refreshers
Beautifully formulated toners loaded with beneficial ingredients
can transform the way your skin looks and feels after
cleansing. Toners help maintain the balance of your skin’s pH.
The purpose of toners is to replenish and nourish skin after
removing makeup and cleansing—a step that can significantly
and visibly help your skin. Even if you use the gentlest
cleanser, your skin still needs to be replenished. This is where
a brilliant cleanser can make your skin really shine. Once you
start using a well-formulated toner, the results will be undeniable.
It no longer becomes an optional step— it’s a must have.
Pick a toner according to your skin type which enhances your
skin.
• For Normal to Dry skin - Try a toner with a milky
texture which helps minimize wrinkles and advanced
signs of aging. This type has a hydrating formula and
addresses dryness and sensitivity as well as leaving
dry skin soft and smooth. It also soothes red, temperamental
skin and gives you healthy, young looking
skin.
• For Normal to Oily or Combination skin – This type
of toner must aid wrinkles and post-breakout marks,
improve the skin’s tone, pore size, and texture. It also
minimizes the appearance of enlarged pores and
recharges the skin with replenishing substances for a
fresh and youthful glow. It should have a water-light
formula that gently calms redness and provides a skin
enriching, oil free hydrated look.
5. Korean Essence
Korean Essence gives more results than any other product because
it treats the skin on a cellular level. It is a concentrated
formula that specifically targets wrinkles, fine lines, dull and
uneven skin tones. It also helps optimize your skin’s natural
cell turnover rate, and with regular use, you will notice your
skin is much smoother and brighter. Important tips when applying
essence: do not use water; store it in a bottle and spray
it directly on your face so wastage is minimal. A liquid to gel
essence makes the skin feel a little plumper as it soaks in. For
spot essence, a thicker more concentrated essence is suggested.
You can apply it to freshly toned skin and pat it in with
your hands.
6. Serums, Boosters & Ampoules
When you think of boosting your skin care or looking for a
powerful face fix, you should probably reach for a serum.
These products can address any issue including brightening,
pore-refining, pigmentation, wrinkles, or acne – this is your
skin perfecting step. These tend to be the hero products we
look to for our glow-goals and feature scientific or exotic
sounding fancy botanical ingredients. Serums are just concentrated
treatments; they are like moisturisers stripped down
to only the most powerful actives. Serums, ampoules and
boosters are all the same – Skin Treatments, and they basically
function similarly. Serums are spot-applied. For example: if
you want to eradicate brown spots and hyper pigmentation,
use a vitamin C serum only on the affected areas. Your serum
will last longer. There is no real age when one should start
using a serum. You are never too young to start looking after
your skin. You can layer your serums as well as add serum to
your products for an extra boost for your skin, especially in
your foundation.
7. Sheet Masks
Sheet masks are face-shaped fabric, papers, fibres, or gel
soaked in a nutrition-packed solution called serum. It is a
meditative, skin nourishing ritual. They are different from
facial masks which are paste based. Sheet masks are generally
used once and they are individually packed making them fast,
convenient, and easy to use. If essence is the heart of skincare,
sheet masks are the soul. Apply it on a clean face and leave it
for 20-30 minutes.
33

10. Sun Protection
Then remove and enjoy your new and improved skin. The sheets
are one size. But every facial structure is different. Start from the
forehead and pat it softly as you come down your face while lining
up the holes for your eyes, nose, and mouth. There is no such
thing as over-doing sheet masks. Once or twice in a week is good
enough for your skin to look enriched, enlightened, and full of life.
8. Eye Cream
The skin around your eyes is the most fragile few inches of
skin on your body and is prone to dryness and quicker to
show age. With aging, constant rubbing of the eyes, squinting,
and constant movement of the eyes hastens the appearance
of lines and wrinkles. Fluid collects under the eyes
which cause puffiness. And late or sleep deprivation causes
dark circles under the eyes. The eyes are the highlight of the
face and need to be kept fresh and beautiful as does the skin
around the eyes. Eye creams help moisturise and even out the
skin tone. Chances are when using eye cream you are either
applying too much product or putting it on the wrong area
of your face. Eye cream should be put near your eye; not on
top of your eyelid or below your bottom lashes. It should be
applied with the ring finger along the orbital bone or the eye
socket and not on the eyelids. Apply 4-5 dots starting at the
outer corner of the eye where crows feet tend to form and
then dab downwards towards the orbital bone.
9. Moisturiser
We need to moisturise our skin to keep it hydrated, soft, supple
and clean. Moisturizers soothe the skin, giving it a dewy, glowing
look. It is similar to emulsion, a lotion, gel or cream. Finding
an appropriate moisturiser for your skin is absolutely necessary.
The best products to moisturise sensitive skin is with coconut
oil, mineral oil, petroleum jelly, or a basic water-based moisturiser.
People with dry skin should try a homemade light
mixture of two tablespoons of olive oil, four tablespoons of
fine brown sugar and a tablespoon of honey. Using this homemade
moisturizer, scrub in a circular motion for a few minutes.
Take a shower and apply a light moisturiser—like petroleum
jelly—as it helps to soothe rough dry skin. And for oily skin,
exfoliation is important. use a light-weight, oilfree moisturiser.
The sun can do a lot of good; it regulates sleep cycles,
stimulates the body’s production of vitamin D and enhances
feelings of well-being. But there’s also a downside: too much
exposure to the sun can lead to wrinkles, age spots, and skin
cancer. The sun is considered to be the biggest cause of visible
aging. Every time the sun strikes your skin, the skin produces
pigment that scatters and absorbs the rays. The resulting tan
means your skin is defending itself from harmful radiation.
But a tan can do only so much and over time the ultraviolet
A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation in sunshine can
weaken the lower layer of skin known as dermis and promote
wrinkles, brown spots, and the development of skin cancer.
The best protection against the sun is a sunscreen with a
high sun protection factor (SPF). When going out in the sun,
always wear light-colored clothing (avoid black clothes), long
sleeves, carry a wide- brimmed hat or a parasol, and drink lots
of water.
What Is Your Skin Type?
-You never experience an oily shine
Make your skincare routine a priority and you will always
have flawless skin. All you have to remember is to exercise,
maintain a healthy diet, keep it natural, and always
think positive.
How to Clean Makeup Brushes:
Not only do dirty makeup brushes breed bacteria, but they can
also affect the colour of your makeup. It's super important to
clean your makeup brushes. Just think about all the dirt and oil
that accumulates on those bristles and how terrible it can be
on your skin; especially if you continue using them in that condition.
Skipping good, regular cleansing can lead to clogged
pores and breakouts. Not only will cleaning your tools help
keep bacteria off your face but it will also condition those precious
tools and will help last a very long time.
Here are some quick tips:
• For heavily soiled makeup brushes, wash them with lukewarm
water and a mild soap or baby shampoo. Alternatively,
you can buy makeup brush cleaners in the shops.
• For lightly soiled brushes, keep running the water through
the brushes until you've rinsed away most of the old makeup.
Make sure the brushes are angled downward into the
stream of water. Remember to avoid getting water underneath
the metal clasp of the handle, as this will ruin the
glue that holds the bristles together.
• Leave the brushes to dry overnight on top of a towel or
tissue. Let the brushes dry completely before using them,
especially on powdered makeup. If your brushes are even
slightly-damp, you may ruin your powder makeup. Additionally
use a paper towel to dry off the bristles and shape
them as you go.
Investing in the right make up tools will ensure that your makeup
looks marvellous all day long. So next time you go makeup
shopping, remember to include these brushes as essential additions
to your makeup collection, and steal the show wherever
you go!
Vitamin D
Deficiency
Although we live in a land blessed with abundant sunshine,
International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) reveals,
that up to 90 percent of UAE residents suffer from
a vitamin D deficiency. Figures released at the International
Conference on Vitamin D Deficiency, held in March in Abu
Dhabi, showed that 78 per cent of UAE residents are deficient.
Either way, we have one of the highest rates of vitamin D deficiency
in the world.
Vitamin D serves several important functions in the body.
These include:
• Promoting calcium absorption
• Maintaining normal calcium and phosphate levels
• Promoting bone and cell growth
• Reducing inflammation
Reasons:
Part of the reason the numbers are so high in the UAE is because
of traditional clothing due to social norm. Both men and
women, but especially women, are covered from head to toe
and are hesitant to be outside especially during hot weather,
People tend to avoid the sun’s rays and it’s those rays that help
the body produce vitamin D.
Practically everyone in UAE goes out from their air condition
home, into an air conditioned vehicle (some with tinted glass)
and then inside into an air conditioned office or mall. It’s a lifestyle
that is born due to soaring high temperatures in the UAE.
It’s a cultural norm to not spend time in the sun.
Several other factors have also contributed to the rising incidence
of vitamin D deficiency. These include:
• Wearing sunscreen (sunscreen blocks the sun’s ability
to stimulate vitamin D production)
• Not spending enough time outside
• Having darkly pigmented skin, which inhibits absorbtion
of the sun’s rays
• Obesity, which typically raises your vitamin D requirements
44

Some people are born without the ability to process vitamin D.
Other people have medical conditions that keep them from
digesting vitamin D efficiently.
Risks:
A deficiency in vitamin D has broader consequences. It has
been linked to an array of common chronic diseases, which
include skeletal diseases, metabolic disorders, asthma in children,
cancer, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune diseases,
infections and cognitive disorders. But that’s not all. Patients
complain of extreme fatigue, chronic tiredness and depression
or listlessness. Muscle, joint and bone pain and overall weakness
are common complaints of those not getting enough vitamin D.
Osteoporosis, is a result caused by vitamin D deficiency, is
also widespread in women more than in men. It is a progressive
bone disease which causes the deterioration of bone tissue
and creates low bone mass, leading to bone fragility and a
higher risk of broken bones. Osteoporosis is a generalized bone
disease and is characterized by decreased bone mass, leading
to the weakening of the skeletal system so much so that the
bones eventually become brittle and the smallest fall can result
in a fracture. It is a silent disease which is asymptomatic and
very often, people do not realise they have the condition until
they have a fracture.
Vitamin D deficiency results in poor absorption of calcium from
the intestines so the body begins to leach calcium from the
bones, leading to weakening of the bones. The positive side is
that osteoporosis can be completely reversed and early detection
can help a person seek medical assistance before a fracture
occurs.
Symptoms:
Vitamin D deficiency doesn’t always cause symptoms. When it
does, some of the symptoms may include:
• Difficulty thinking clearly
• Bone pain
• Frequent bone fractures
• Muscle weakness
see if the child sweats too much from their head when they are
napping.
Excessive sweating in adults is also an indication that a vitamin
D deficiency exists, and consequently, a calcium deficiency.
Night sweats are a symptom of vitamin D deficiency, and also
head and forehead sweating.
If you have darker skin, are over 50, have milk allergies, are vegan,
a smoker, overweight or obese, and if you have a gastrointestinal
condition that affects your ability to absorb fat (such
as Crohn’s disease, coeliac and non-coeliac gluten sensitivities
and inflammatory bowel disease), you are at higher risk of vitamin
D deficiency.
Cure:
In order to prevent the disease and vitamin D deficiency, doctors
recommend getting 10 minutes of sun exposure daily to
your bare skin and taking vitamin D supplements. In addition
to this consumption of food high in vitamin D on a daily basis,
such as egg yolk, fortified milk, salmon, sardines, tuna and cod
liver oil can help prevent the deficiency. However, a diet rich
in vitamin D does not replace the benefit of sun exposure. Experts
agree that the solution is to spend more time in the sun.
Sunlight spurs the body to make vitamin D. But because of the
skin-cancer risk, there isn’t an official recommendation to catch
some rays. However, a small amount of sun exposure without
sunscreen can do the trick.
Schedule a blood test that will check vitamin D levels and take
a supplement if needed. The supplement should be prescribed
by a doctor to ensure you are taking the right dosage. Some
need it daily, some should take concentrated pills once a week
or once a month, and there are different doses depending on a
child’s age also. Talk to your doctor before choosing a dosage.
Another option is to conduct a bone density test. The test will
determine amounts of mineral matter concentrated per square
centimeter of the bone thus finding out whether or not the patient
has the disease, and if so, to what extent it has reached.
• Soft bones that may result in deformities
Our advice at Cure & Care is to get your Vitamin D levels checked
• Unexplained fatigue
out by your doctor especially if you are experiencing some of
Many people don’t develop symptoms until their vitamin D levels
get very low or have been low for some time. This can make
the condition difficult to diagnose.
the following symptoms: unexplained fatigue, difficulty thinking
clearly, bone pain, frequent bone fractures, muscle weakness,
and depression. An early diagnosis followed by treatment
could lead to a strong and healthy future. Focus on short-term
Another symptom of vitamin D deficiency, in infants especially,
is a sweaty head. Newborns and young babies who sweat a
symptoms and avoid long-term complications.
lot on their head should be tested for a vitamin D deficiency.
For children up to age 3, it’s good for parents to keep a tab and
News Flash*
Advanced age Emirati
couple experiences
healthy conception
through In-Vitro
Fertilisation (IVF)
The couple was administered a hormonal therapy for
three months for a successful pregnancy
Abu Dhabi, UAE, 13 April 2017: An Emirati couple in
their early 40s has become one of the few couples in the
UAE to experience childbirth at an advanced age.
“The journey has been long, but the results are sweet. IVI
Middle East Fertility Clinic gave us the family we thought
we’d never have,” said Ayesha, a second-time parent to a
healthy baby.
Ayesha and her husband Hamid, both around 40 years,
were fighting secondary infertility since eight years. They
had no problem conceiving their first child, but trying for
a second baby was getting complicated. Unable to figure
out, the couple consulted the fertility specialist at IVI Fertility and
found that Ayesha had very low ovarian reserve while
Hamid was diagnosed with azoospermia – a condition
which results in no sperm in the ejaculation process.
“Post first consultation, Hamid was administered a hormonal
therapy for three months which significantly improved
his sperm quality. He was also recommended to freeze
his semen multiple times so that they could be used later
in the In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) / Intracytoplasmic Sperm
Injection (ICSI) treatment. ICSI is one of the most utilised and
successful methodology of IVF which involves the injection
of a single sperm directly into a mature egg in the IVF
laboratory,” said Prof. Dr. Human Fatemi, Medical Director
of IVI Middle East Fertility Clinic Abu Dhabi, Subspecialist
Reproductive Medicine & Reproductive Surgery.
46
“At IVI Middle East Fertility Clinic, a lot of emphasis
is put on patient education. Extensive counselling is
given to familiarise them with the designed treatment.
Before the start of IVF/ICSI treatment, the clinic also
customises the ovarian stimulation protocol as per the
patient’s needs for egg production. These eggs are then
collected and each egg is injected with a single sperm
from the spouse. The rest of the process is same as IVF,”
added Dr. Fatemi.
Additionally, Pre-implantation Genetic Screening (PGS)
was done on the resulting embryos to rule out any
chromosomal abnormality due to Ayesha’s advanced
maternal age. This test is done to screen for abnormalities
in the embryos prior to the transfer to ensure a
healthy child.
Once the process was complete, the healthiest embryo
was selected and transferred, which resulted in a successful
pregnancy, and the rest, preserved for future use
post HAAD approval which is the norm in the UAE. With
IVI’s treatment, even advanced maternal age and azoospermia
did not stop Ayesha and Hamid from finally
having the healthy baby they always dreamt of.
“Since a patient is more likely to become pregnant with
twins or triplets if more than one embryo is transferred,
at IVI Middle East Fertility Clinic, a single embryo transfer
(SET) is recommended wherever possible”, concluded
Dr. Barbara Lawrenz, Specialist Obstetrics & Gynecology,
IVI Middle East Fertility Clinic.
While science today has helped women take control of
their biological clock, the complications of bearing a
child at a later age are undeniable. Biologically, a woman’s
fertility peaks in her 20’s and starts to decline from
around the age of 30, dropping down more steeply
from the age of 35. With advancing age, women’s ovaries
become less able to release eggs, thus decreasing
the chances of fertility. A healthy 30-year-old has about
a 20 per cent chance each month of getting pregnant,
while a healthy 40-year-old has about a 5 per cent
chance each month. For women age 45 to 49, the odds
dip as low as 1 per cent. Due to the declining quality
and quantity of eggs, women who become pregnant in
their 40’s have an increased risk of miscarriage, pre-term
birth, gestational diabetes, hypertension and having a
baby with a congenital abnormality.
“As more couples in the UAE are turning to In-Vitro
Fertilisation treatment to conceive children, it is recommended
that couples avail the treatment at an early age to
experience healthy conception,” concluded Dr. Fatemi.

prime importance!! For many, achieving flat abs is like
a nightmare...but... with a little focus and dedication,
NOTHING...is...IMPOSSIBLE!!!
eating habits, loosing fat around your midsection
can be a battle.
We went straight to the experts to get their best advice
for quick shrinking of your tummy. Here are a few surprising
food tricks, which will help you shed inches and
pounds, and uncover awesome abs.
These 5 diet secrets help blast away that stubborn belly
flab. It promises a thinner, lighter you by abolishing
the foods, drinks and habits that can transform your
fat belly to flat belly. If you dream about having a flat
tummy, this article may be just what you need.
1. AVOID EATING LATE
“Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner
like a pauper”. Dinner is something, which should be as
light as possible because it is that time of the day when
your digestive system is preparing to shut down. So
avoid eating after 8 pm, to give your body enough time
to digest.
Try these tips....
• Eat only protein and leafy green vegetables for
dinner—and no dessert or night time snacks—
to keep you full, and avoid holding water when
you wake up.
• If your evening routine involves food, then find a
new routine.
• Brushing your teeth after dinner will create a
mindset, that you’ve put an end to your consumption
for the day.
• Let the habit form. We understand the first few
weeks will be challenging, but soon your body
will get accustomed to your new no-late-food
routine.
2. LOAD UP ON FIBER
Adding more fiber to your diet can help you lose
weight, or maintain a healthy weight. It usually takes
longer to eat foods high in fiber, while fiber also slows
down the emptying of your stomach, making it easier
for you to eat less and lose weight. So in your struggle
for flat belly, try these following steps, you’ll be eating
less and getting lean.
Try these tips....
• Eating a healthy breakfast jump-starts your metabolism,
regulates your blood sugar levels, and
gives you energy to carry you through lunchtime.
Fiber-rich oatmeal is a great option because it’s
filling, so you won’t indulge in a muffin or bagel
by midmorning. Opt for plain oatmeal since the
flavoured brands can be full of sugar.
• Good sources of fibre include whole grains, fruit
and vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds. As
such, you should trade any products you eat that
are made with refined grains, with those made
from whole grains to get the most benefits.
• When you are increasing your fibre intake, it is
essential to do so gradually to avoid discomfort.
You should also drink plenty of water and include
48

exercise to keep bowels healthy.
• Veggies & fruits have a huge number of benefits.
So make sure to include them in your diet. They
make your body healthier and leaner with every
fibrous bite.
3. CONSUME MORE WATER
Chronic dehydration triggers false hunger signals that
causes you to overeat empty calories. So keep yourself
hydrated as drinking water is the easiest and most inexpensive
way to promote fat loss. ....
• The traditional advice has typically been that, an
adult should drink eight, 8-ounce glasses (two
litres) of water per day. Drink before you feel
thirsty, and keep it up throughout the day
• Make it an everyday habit to drink a big glass of
water before every meal; this helps you not to
overeat.
• Replace sugar-filled sodas, aerated drinks, coffee,
and juices with water. This tip alone can make a
huge difference in the shape of your body.
• Remember to carry water with you throughout
the day, and keep drinking to help flush down
toxins. Add a squeeze of lemon, cucumber slices
or mint leaves for a nice refreshing flavour.
• Having a glass of hot water with lemon early in
the morning will help shed a few kilos.
• Drinking lots of water helps get rid of the bloat
that your body might be holding on to. So go ahead
and guzzle more H 2 O.
4. LIMIT YOUR INTAKE OF CARBS
Eating fewer carbs is a very realistic and effective way to
flatten your tummy. Do not go into over-drive and completely
stop all carbs, but rather cut down on the quantity.
Limiting your total carb intake, as well as simply replacing
your refined carb with whole food carbs, may reduce your
waist circumference and even improve your health.
Try these tips....
• Replace white pasta, bread with their whole-grain
alternatives, as whole grains are less likely to get
stored as fat. Do watch out on the amount though.
• Eat carbs only after a hard workout session, i.e. when
your body needs it to replace the ones you burnt off.
• Opt for complex, starchy, and fiber-filled foods ones
such as sweet potatoes, brown rice, legumes, oats,
leafy greens, and asparagus, which are more slowly
digested, and try to limit your daily tally to about
200 grams.
49
• Avoid carb-filled snacks. Instead of crackers or
chips, have a hardboiled egg, a protein shake,
fresh fruit or veggies.
5. CHUCK THE C.R.A.P OUT OF YOUR BODY
Wondering what C.R.A.P. is? Well, it is a group of food that
does no good to your body. C for caffeine, R for refined
sugar, A for alcohol and P for processed food. If you remove
these four food groups from your life, you can live
your dream of a flat belly. Simply swapping some food
items with their healthy versions can actually change
your life. It can help you in getting a flat belly with less effort.
Try the following pointers and notice the difference
on your own.
Try these tips....
• There is nothing better than fruit, which is natural
candy. Once you stop eating refined sugar you
will find fruit to be much more sweet and delicious
too.
• White sugar or high fructose corn syrup are the
worst for your abs-cut them out from your diet
completely. Added sugar is also hidden in various
foods. So it is very important to read the ingredient
lists on foods.
• Try using maple syrup, raw honey or dates in your
cooking; these wholesome sweeteners are a much
better choice as compared to off-the-shelf sweeteners.
• Stay away from alcohol. When it comes to flattening
your stomach, alcohol is not your friend.
It makes your body store more of the fat you eat,
and burn up to 36% less fat than you normally
would. It can also inhibit your body’s production
of fat burning hormones.
• Avoid processed food. Instead switch to foods
high in monounsaturated fatty acids include olive
oil, avocados, nuts and seeds. Try to eat plenty
of whole grains, nuts, legumes, fruits, vegetables,
dairy, fish and unprocessed meat.
On a concluding note, try and incorporate these tips in
your daily routine along with a challenging and
consistent exercise program. By incorporating some of
these healthy diet tips, mentioned above in your daily
routine, you may see your six packs sooner than later.
Keep in mind that it may take some time and effort, but
it will all be worth it in the end if done properly. Be sure
to consult with a medical professional before changing
your diet regime!

The biggest fashion medium in the world

Precious Eyes
“The beauty of a women must be seen from in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love
resides”, Audrey Hepburn One of the most attractive features of your face is your eyes. They are the windows to your
soul. They smile, laugh, at times cry, and can also be cruel too. Your eyes express emotions and thoughts beautifully
when words fail us. In return, it is your responsibility to take care of them. In today’s world with a heavy workload and
strenuous lifestyle, your eyes lose their natural beauty. Dark circles, puffiness, redness, itchiness, and wrinkles become
evidence of these ravages. You need to keep your eyes in perfect shape. So team Cure and Care is suggesting a few essential
eye care tips:.
1. Eat Healthy to Enhance Your
Eyesight
Are you eating the foods that are best
meant for your eyes? There’s more to eye
nutrition than just carrots. Learn which
foods protect your eyes from sightthreatening
diseases.
Fish
Cold water fish - such as salmon, tuna,
sardines, and mackerel - are all rich in
omega-3 fatty acids which help against
dry eyes, macular degeneration, and
even cataracts. An alternative, if you’re
not a seafood eater, is black currant seed
oil or flax seed oil.
Leafy Vegetables
Spinach, kale, and collard greens are full
of lutein, zeaxanthin, and plant pigments
that help the development of macular
degeneration. Brocolli, peas, and avocados
are also good sources of this antioxidant
duo.
Eggs
The vitamin and nutrients in eggs, including
lutein and vitamin A, protect against
night blindness and dry eyes. Eggs also
promote eye health and functions.
Whole Grains
A diet containing foods with a low glycemic
index can help reduce the risk of
age-related macular degeneration. Swap
refined carbohydrates for quinoa, brown
rice, whole oats, whole-wheat bread and
pastas. Vitamin E, zinc, and niacin found
in whole grains help to promote overall
eye health.
Citrus Fruits And Berries
Oranges, grapefruit, lemons, and berries
are high in vitamin C. They reduce the risk
of cataracts.
Nuts
Pistachios, walnuts, almonds - whichever
type tickles your fancy - are rich in omega-3
fatty acids and vitamin E. These also
boost your eye health.
Colourful Fruits And Veggies
Vegetables and fruits such as carrots, tomatoes,
bell peppers, corn, strawberries,
and pumpkin are all excellent sources of
vitamin A and C.
Legumes
Kidney beans, black-eyed peas, and lentils
are all good sources of bio-flavonoids
and zinc which help protect retina and
lower the risk of cataracts.
Sunflower Seeds
Help keep your eyes healthy and diseasefree
by snacking on sunflower seeds
which are an excellent source of vitamin
E and zinc.
Beef
Adding lean beef in moderation to your
diet can boost eye health. Beef contains
zinc which helps your body absorb vitamin
A and plays an important role in
reducing risk of age-related macular degeneration.
52
2. Quit Smoking to Save Your Eye
sight
It is a well known fact that tobacco smoke
generated while smoking a cigarette,
pipe or other tobacco products can cause
damage to the individual who is smoking
and also to the passive smokers nearby.
The health conditions most commonly
associated with tobacco smoke exposure
are cancers and cardio vascular disorders.
However there is a significant rise in the
number of eye disorders not only in people
who smoke but in passive smokers
too. Not as well known are the detrimental
effects that smoking can have on your
vision. Smoking has been directly linked
to two of the leading causes of vision loss
– cataracts, and macular degeneration.
Research reveals that smokers have double
the risk of developing cataracts compared
to non-smokers. This risk is triple
for heavy smokers!
Doctors have discovered a specific relationship
between cataracts and the
amount a smoker can smoke. Cataracts
occur when the eye’s clear lens grows
cloudy over time. There is also evidence
that smoking leads to accumulation of
heavy metals like cadmium in the lens.
As far as macular degeneration is concerned,
smoking increases a person’s risk
of developing macular degeneration two
to four times greater than that of a nonsmoker.

3. Protect Your Eyes With Proper
Shades
Sunglasses are a great fashion accessory,
but their most important job is to protect
your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV)
rays. Some of the sun’s effects on the eyes
are:
• Cataracts - a clouding of the eye’s lens
that blurs vision. An estimated 20%
of all cases are caused by extended
UV exposure.
• Macular degeneration - damage to
the retina that destroys central vision.
Macular degeneration is the leading
cause of blindness. When purchasing
sunglasses, look for those that block
out 99 to 100% of both UVA and UVB
radiation so you can keep your vision
sharp and your eyes healthy. Think of
sunglasses as sunblock for your eyes!
A wide-brimmed hat offers great protection
too!
4. Use Safety Eye Wear
Why risk losing precious eyesight when
wearing safety glasses or protective goggles
can keep your eyes safe for a lifetime
of good vision?
Protective eyewear could prevent up to
90% of all eye injuries. You might want to
learn more about safety glasses and goggles
that suit your lifestyle better.
Safety eyewear must conform to higher
standards of impact resistance than
regular eyewear which optical professionals
sometimes call ‘dress eyewear’.
This higher standard applies to both the
lenses and the frames of safety glasses
and goggles. Safety glasses may have
prescription lenses or non-prescription
(also called ‘plano’) lenses. Regardless of
their size or durability of the frame and
lenses, regular prescription eyewear does
not qualify as safety glasses unless they
meet specific criteria. Your eyes are very
important to you. Use proper safety eyewear
and handle them with care.
5. Look Away From Your Computer
Screen
With so many of us using computers at
work, computer eye strain
has become
a major job related complaint. Studies
reveal that eye strain and other bothersome
visual symptoms occur in 50 to 90
percent of computer workers. Here are a
few easy steps to reduce risk of computer
eye strain:
• Get a comprehensive eye exam. Having
a routine comprehensive eye
exam is the most important thing
you can do to prevent or treat computer
vision problems.
• Use proper lighting. Eye strain is often
caused by excessively bright light
either from outdoor sunlight coming
through a window or from harsh interior
lighting. When you use a computer,
your ambient lighting should
be half as bright as that typically
found in offices.
• Minimize glare. Glare on walls and
finished surfaces as well as reflections
on your computer screen also
can cause computer eye strain. Consider
installing an anti-glare screen
on your monitor and if possible paint
bright white walls a darker colour
with a matte finish.
• Upgrade your display If you have
not already done so, replace your
old cathode ray tube – (CRT) style
monitor with a flat-panel liquid crystal
display (LCD) like those on laptop
computers. LCD screens are easier on
the eyes and usually have an antireflective
surface.
• Old fashioned CRT screens can also
cause a noticeable flicker of images
which is a major cause of computer
eye strain.
• Adjust your computer display settings
Adjust the brightness of the display
so it’s approximately the same as the
brightness of the surrounding workplace.
Adjust the text and contrast
for comfort, especially when reading
or composing long documents. Blue
light is a short wavelength visible
light that is associated with more eye
strain than longer wavelength hues,
such as orange and red. Reducing the
colour temperature of your display
also lowers the amount of blue light
emitted resulting in better long-term
viewing comfort.
• Blink more often. Blinking is very
important when working at a computer
for long hours. Blinking moistens
your eyes to prevent dryness
and irritation. Tears coating the eye
evaporate more rapidly during long
non-blinking phases and this can
cause dry eyes.To reduce your risk of
dry eyes during computer use, try the
exercise: Every 20 minutes, blink 10
times by closing your eyes as if falling
asleep (very slowly).
• Take frequent breaks. To reduce your
risk for computer vision syndrome
and neck, back, and shoulder pain,
take frequent breaks during your
computer work. During your breaks,
stand up, move about, stretch your
arms, legs, back, neck, and shoulders
to reduce tension and muscle fatigue.
6. Visit Your Doctor Regularly
Strained eyes can be a huge worry if neglected.
Scheduling a regular check up to
the ophthalmologist is absolutely necessary.
Too much computer work, watching
television, or any other visual activities
puts a lot of strain on your eyes and gradually
requires an investment in a pair of
prescription glasses. Todays young children
and office workers are found with
improper vision correction and/or weak
vision. A check-up every three months for
those who already have impaired vision
is important. Others should check their
eyes every six months.
Special care should be taken if you have
high-power numbered prescription
glasses. Any computer work should be
done with specific breaks in between and
the distance and glare of the computer
should be in line with what the doctor
tells you.
In conclusion, eye care is very important
starting at a young age and as you grow
older because your eyes grow with you
until puberty and require specific attention
at all times. Following the proper
dietary measures suggested above will
help your eyes.. Remember: your eyes
are very precious.... One of the most important
senses that we have is our sight.
Don’t neglect it by staying away from the
doctor!

The Benefits of
Dark Chocolate
Today, chocolate is lauded for its tremendous antioxidant potential. The higher the cocoa content, the more health benefits
there are and the less sugar content, which is better for overall health. Featured here are some Benefits of Dark Chocolate.
Dark chocolate is loaded with important nutrients that can
positively affect your health. Made from the seed of the cocoa
tree, it is one of the best sources of antioxidants on the
planet. Studies show that dark chocolate (not the sugary
one) can improve health and lower the risk of heart disease.
The potential health benefits of processed, highly
sweetened chocolate are slim to none, but the health benefits
of dark chocolate are numerous and quite impressive.
Dark Chocolate is Very Nutritious
Dark chocolate nutrition is actually quite impressive, especially
when it comes to fiber, iron, magnesium, manganese and
copper. Benefits of dark chocolate abound thanks to all this
goodness.
A 100 gram bar of dark chocolate with 70-85% cocoa contains:
• 11 grams of fiber.
• 67% of the RDA for Iron.
• 58% of the RDA for Magnesium.
• 89% of the RDA for Copper.
• 98% of the RDA for Manganese.
• It also has plenty of potassium, phosphorus, zinc and
selenium.
Of course, 100 grams (3.5 ounces) is a fairly large amount
and not something you should be consuming daily. All
these nutrients also come with 600 calories and moderate
amounts of sugar. For this reason, dark chocolate is best
consumed in moderation. The fatty acid profile of cocoa and
58
dark chocolate is excellent. The fats are mostly saturated and
monounsaturated, with small amounts of polyunsaturates.
It also contains stimulants like caffeine and theobromine, but
is unlikely to keep you awake at night as the amount of caffeine
is very small compared to coffee.
Dark Chocolate is a Powerful Source of Antioxidants
The researchers found that the flavanol content of cocoa powder
(30.1 milligrams per gram) was significantly greater than
all of the other super fruit powders. It was also revealed that
dark chocolate’s antioxidant capacity was higher than all of
the super fruit juices except pomegranate. The total polyphenol
content per serving was also highest for dark chocolate
(about 1,000 milligrams per serving), which was significantly
higher than all of the fruit juices except pomegranate juice.
Unprocessed cocoa beans are among the highest scoring
foods that have been tested.
Dark chocolate is loaded with organic compounds that are
biologically active and function as antioxidants. These include
polyphenols, flavanols, catechins, among others. Cocoa and
dark chocolate have a wide variety of powerful antioxidants,
way more than more other foods.
Dark Chocolate Improves Blood Flow and Lowers Blood
Pressure
The flavanols in dark chocolate can stimulate the endothelium,
the lining of arteries, to produce Nitric Oxide (NO), which is

a gas. One of the functions of NO is to send signals to the arteries
to relax, which lowers resistance to blood flow and therefore
reduces blood pressure.
A study published in 2015 compared type 2 diabetics’ consumption
of white chocolate versus high-cocoa, polyphenolrich
dark chocolate. The subjects consumed 25 grams (a little
under one ounce) of dark or white chocolate for eight weeks.
The researchers found that not only did dark chocolate lower
the blood pressure of the hypertensive diabetics, but it also
decreased fasting blood sugar. Of course, if you’re a diabetic,
the higher the cocoa content, which also means the lower the
sugar content, the better.
Dark Chocolate Improves Heart & Skin Health
A study published in International Journal of Cardiology had
subjects either consume a daily dose of flavonoid-rich dark
chocolate or non-flavonoid white chocolate for two weeks. The
results showed that flavonoid-rich dark chocolate intake
significantly improved heart circulation in healthy adults. On
the other hand, white chocolate with zero flavonoids had no
positive health effects on the subjects.
The bioactive compounds in dark chocolate may also be great
for your skin. The flavonols can protect against sun-induced
damage, improve blood flow to the skin and increase skin
density and hydration. If you’re planning on a beach vacation,
consider loading up on dark chocolate in the prior weeks and
months.
Dark Chocolate Is Good For Overall Cholesterol Profile
The compounds in dark chocolate appear to be highly protective
against the oxidation of LDL (“Bad” Cholesterol). In the
long term, this should cause much less cholesterol to lodge
in the arteries and we should see a lower risk of heart disease
over the long term.
Studies have also shown that:
• Dark chocolate’s cocoa polyphenols may be involved in
cholesterol control.
• Three-week consumption of polyphenol-rich dark chocolate
increased HDL (good) cholesterol.
• 15-day consumption of polyphenol-rich dark chocolate
resulted in total and LDL (“bad”) cholesterol decreases of
6.5 percent and 7.5 percent, respectively.
• Seven-day consumption of regular dark chocolate resulted
in a 6 percent decrease of LDL cholesterol and a 9
percent increase of HDL cholesterol.
Dark Chocolate Protects From Disease Causing Free Radicals
Free radicals are unbalanced compounds created by cellular
processes in the body, especially those that fight against environmental
toxins we’re exposed to on a daily basis. Antioxidants
are the compounds that are believed to neutralize free
radicals and protect the body from their damage.
One of dark chocolate’s most impressive attributes is its high
antioxidant content, which is why it is in the list of top highantioxidant
foods. Two groups of antioxidants prevalent in.
So the higher the cacao/cocoa percentage of your next dark
chocolate bar, the more awesome antioxidants you’ll consume.
Dark Chocolate Improves Brain Function
The good news isn’t over yet. Dark chocolate may also improve
the function of the brain. Dark chocolate is in the list of brain
foods to boost focus and memory. Previous research showed
that acute as well as chronic ingestion of flavanol-rich cocoa is
associated with increased blood flow to cerebral gray matter
and it has been suggested that cocoa flavanols might be beneficial
in conditions with reduced cerebral blood flow, including
dementia and stroke. It also improves verbal fluency and
several risk factors for disease
Take Home Message
There is considerable evidence that cocoa can provide powerful
health benefits, being especially protective against cardiovascular
disease. Dark chocolates often contain some sugar,
but the amounts are usually small and the darker the chocolate,
the less sugar it will contain.
So is dark chocolate good for you? Most certainly yes, as long as
you choose the right product. When you choose the best and
healthiest option, there are so many awesome benefits of dark
chocolate.
But of course, this doesn’t mean people should go all out and
consume lots of chocolate every day. It is still loaded with calories
and easy to overeat on. Be aware that a lot of the chocolate
on the market is of poor quality. You need to choose quality
stuff… organic, dark chocolate with 70% or higher cocoa content.
So go ahead — reward yourself guilt-free and promote your
health at the same time with a delicious piece of dark chocolate.
