Lifestyle programs within Homeowners?Associations
create a community which is both bonded and active,
transforming neighbors into friends through
community celebrations and activities. Each
community has its own unique and sometimes diverse
cultural makeup and each community must be
assessed individually, through consistent polling, to
ascertain which kinds of lifestyle events and activities
they would value participating in. - One glove does not
fit all.
Many communities, in order to satisfy the needs of all
residents, will host adult social activities and
special-interest groups, such as book clubs or
gardening classes, while simultaneously hosting
family-friendly events and holiday parties for those
homeowners with younger children. Recently, Melrose
Lifestyle Services has been introducing a new genre of
entertaining events coupled with an educational
element. We have found these new style of events
have flourished for communities whose demographic
interests run the range from adult-specific to
family-friendly. This is what is we at Melrose Lifestyle
Services refer to as Edu-tainment.
Gatorland has been a top choice for lifestyle managers
to bring out to their communities for residents to enjoy.
They bring a variety of reptiles and animals, from
snakes and toads to scorpions and even a 3 foot gator!
The families really enjoy learning new facts about
these Florida based creatures, while getting a few
laughs in from the friendly and funny staff from
Gatorland. The best part of Edu-tainment is that it
makes learning fun: the kids get to volunteer to hold
the different animals and really get to be a part of the
show. They are eager to ask questions and learn the
answers to many facts that you wouldn?t normally
know about these creatures. The shows have always
been a full house of happy residents in every
community Gatorland has visited.
The great thing we have discovered about the
Edu-tainment programs hosted in our Melrose Lifestyle
communities, is that they aren?t just for children. The
programs can range from learning about the stars and
astronomy to cooking and wine pairing classes. There
is something out there for every resident to take part
in, learn, and enjoy. Anytime a professional in a
particular field is teaching or instructing in a relaxed,
enjoyable environment, it can be considered
Edu-tainment.
Between dropping off the kids to their extra curricular
activities and making your weekly meetings, life gets
pretty hectic. Most people only make time for things
that are meaningful and beneficial to them.
Edu-tainment isn?t just mindless fun ? because it is
educational and entertaining, most people are willing
to make time for these programs. We, at Melrose
Lifestyle Services, have seen firsthand the huge
success this type of programming has gained. We see
Edu-tainment becoming a highly prevalent element in
all future lifestyle programs for Homeowners?
Associations and continuously growing as it sparks

While the season?s warmer weather offers great opportunity
for games of fetch with Fido, it also brings increased risk
from exposure to pests, particularly ticks, fleas, mosquitoes
and stinging insects. Safeguarding dogs and cats begins
with discussions with your veterinarian, but in addition to
prescribed healthcare repellents and preventatives, there
are several things that can be done to make your yard
inhospitable to the stinging, biting troublemakers.
Ticks...
Ticks are certainly one of the most concerning warm
weather pests. Ticks are endemic with various species
posing different health threats, such as Rocky Mountain
spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, babesia and Lyme disease.
Tick-borne illnesses generally present with lethargy,
weakness, anemia and even organ failure. Pet owners are
encouraged to minimize the risk of ticks in yards by
regularly trimming grass and other vegetation. As nuisance
wildlife and rodents are common tick carriers, seal trash
cans, remove brush piles and keep firewood two feet off of
the ground to keep them away.
Mosquitoes...
Mosquitoes also pose health risks to dogs and cats as their
bites can transmit heartworm, a parasitic roundworm that
can infect a host and result in a potentially serious disease.
To help keep these pests at bay, homeowners are advised
to repair any torn screens and eliminate mosquito breeding
grounds by removing standing water in the yard.
Empty wading pools, toys, grill covers flower pots, clogged
gutters and other places that tend to gather water. Bird
baths should be changed every week to keep water fresh.
Mosquitoes only need half an inch of stagnant water to
develop from eggs to pupae to adult mosquitoes that can
then live out of water, so a thorough check of the yard is
essential.
Fleas...
Though fleas are tiny pests, they cause big problems. Not
only can they infest an entire home quickly, flea saliva can
cause anemia and dermatitis and transfer tapeworms to
dogs and cats. Avoid walking dogs in tall grass where there
is a greater chance of flea exposure, wash dogs after walks
and puppy play dates, and launder bedding, collars and
stuffed toys.
Bees & Wasps...
Stinging insects are another potential problem for pets,
especially if stung near the mouth or throat as this may
cause swelling that can restrict breathing. Inspect the yard
for evidence of hives or stinging insect colonies. If you see
evidence of an infestation, contact a home pest
professional who can safely remove nests and control
swarms.

First Annual Volunteer Brunch | Kings Gate, Port Charlotte

On March 24, 2017, Melrose Lifestyle Services staff
worked together in unison with The Melrose Management
Partnership team at Kings Gate to host our first annual
volunteer brunch for all of the kind volunteers here at
Kings Gate who have graciously donated untold hours in
devotion to make this community such a wonderful place
to live. We deeply appreciate each and every one of our
dedicated volunteers.
Over 150 residents were in attendance at this wondrous
event, which couldn?t have happened without our generous
vendors: West Coast Printing, Aqua Plumbing, Bright View
Landscaping, Holiday Pools, Pope Golf, NaturZone
Environmental, Peebles Cleaning, Gulf Coast Aquatics,
Alert Protection, Black Jack Air and Jeff Masters Electric.
We especially thank these kind local vendors for making
this awesome event possible.

Gatorland Visit | Hickory Hammock, Winter Garden
Professional Gator Wranglers from Florida's famous
Gatorland came to the Hickory Hammock Clubhouse for
an interactive and educational show for residents of all
ages to enjoy. The humorous anecdotes, witty banter and
wealth of knowledge exhibited by expert gator wrangler
Danny from Gatorland, left each resident in the audience
wide-eyed in wonder and belly-sore from laughter!
Danny brought with him a vast array of interesting and
unique creature to exhibit and amaze all in attendance.
These creatures included, a huge tarantula spider, rare
tropical toad, and even a young 3-foot long alligator. Each
child was eager to volunteer to hold the various reptiles
and other creatures on hand! Everyone had an opportunity
to hold the three foot long gator at the end of the show for
a great FaceBook photo opportunity.

Lush Lawns & Green Gardens
Light Up Your Landscaping Like a Pro
Summer months are quickly approaching, and many
homeowners are getting lawns prepared for cookouts,
family gatherings and entertaining late-night porch
hangouts.
According to the American Lighting Association (ALA),
proper outdoor lighting is just as essential for a
beautiful landscape as are a lush lawn, bright
flowerbeds and manicured shrubs.
Use Indirect Light...
Experts predict that homeowners have begun to shift
toward more elegant, indirect light for their
landscaping, which essentially uses a source to reflect
the light emitted by the light fixture. This creates more
of an atmospheric tone, allowing the light to spread
across a wall off the side of a house more effectively.
Indirect lighting will illuminate flower beds, gardens,
bushes or other decorative landscaping art.
Additionally, the light will bounce off the ground and
create a nicely lit walkway around flowerbeds.
The Shift Toward LEDs...
LED light bulbs are beginning to dominate the
landscape lighting industry. For the majority of
homeowners, outdoor lights and landscape lighting are
typically left on longer than other home lighting, which
makes LEDs the more affordable and logical option.
Additionally, LEDs can be manufactured in much
smaller sizes, which give homeowners more options to
use them in unique spaces. Experts explain that LEDs
are so small, they can be used as application lighting,
as well as for aesthetic purposes. Hardscape designs
are easy to mesh with LEDs, because the style creates
both a passageway lighting source and indirect lighting
for stone or brick landscapes.
Go Simplistic...
One significant trend in landscape lighting is simplicity
and cleanliness. What this means is more
homeowners are choosing to go with fewer ground
fixtures to illuminate their entire home. According to
experts, residents who simply align their light fixtures
along a walkway in a very orderly and organized
fashion are providing a lot of unnecessary light and
wasting energy.
Going for a more simplistic design can still highlight
plants and flower beds while giving just enough light to
illuminate a backyard or around a patio. Also,
homeowners are moving toward fewer lumens in light
fixtures. This allows the light beam to spread more
efficiently and even out the overall light sources.

Easter Egg Hunt 2017 | Live Oak Preserve, Tampa

Melrose Lifestyle Services hosted Live Oak Preserve's
annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 8th, 2017!
This hugely popular event was proven a success with
an over 500 excited residents in attendance, which
included Peter Cottontail along with the professional
face painters from Merry Minstrels. Live Oak Preserve
families and children under 12 years old enjoyed the
"Selfie Station" photo-opportunity with the Easter
Bunny. A performance from Mr. Tommy, a local kids
musician; Lunch with the Easter Bunny and special
Easter egg hunts in 4 different age categories with a
total of 3,000 eggs up for grabs!
Many Live Oak Preserve families in attendance stated
this is their favorite event of the year and felt that this
year's event was the best one yet! Live Oak Preserve
would like to thank the staff, volunteers, and vendors
who greatly assisted in creating such a successful
event.

Delicious Dinner Delights

If you are like most families, the stress of having kids and
maintaining hectic schedules can heat up the happiest of
households in no time ? especially when it comes to trying
to decide what to have for dinner.
However, with a little planning and some cooperation, even
the busiest family can find time to sit down and enjoy a meal
together.
The following tips will give you an idea of how you can
streamline the dinner process, while squeezing in some
much-needed family time:
1.) Get the whole household involved. Not only on chores
like washing and drying dishes, but on tasting and choosing
the menus.
2.) Schedule a mock cooking class. If you want to get family
members involved, make time on a weekend for a prepping
and cooking session, where everyone can share knife skills,
recipes, and other culinary lessons.
3.) Do a taste test. Let?s face it, every family has that one
member who?s finicky. To combat that, have them weigh in
for taste tests. This way, you can plan to cook that dish in
bulk.
4.) Strive for leftovers. Whoever is cooking can make extra of
anything that?s a hit with family members and store leftovers
in the fridge or freezer. Two roasted chickens (instead of
one) are great for hot or cold sandwiches, soup, salad, and
great filler for fajitas or burritos.
To help you get started, the maker of Minute Rice is giving
out this one-stop shopping, anyone-can-make recipe:
15 Minute Chicken and Rice Dinner
Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon oil
- 4 small, boneless, skinless chicken breast halves
- 1 can condensed cream of chicken soup
- 1/ 2 cup water
- 1/ 2 cup chicken broth
- 2 cups Minute White Rice, uncooked
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
Directions:
1.) Heat oil in large nonstick skillet on medium-high heat.
Add chicken; cover. Cook 4 minutes on each side or until
lightly browned on both sides. Remove chicken from skillet.
2.) Add soup, water, and chicken broth to skillet; stir. Bring to
boil.
Stir in rice, garlic powder, and onion powder.
3.) Top with chicken; cover. Cook on low heat 5 minutes or
until chicken is cooked through. (170 degrees). Let sit 5
minutes or until liquid is absorbed. Serve sprinkled with
chopped parsley, if desired.
For a whole-grain alternative, use Minute Brown Rice for the
Minute White Rice and cook an additional 5 minutes.
Yield: 4 servings.

Melrose Lifestyle Services hosted 150 residents
within the newly renovated Grand Hampton
Clubhouse for drinks, live music, delectable
appetizers, a sumptuous three-course dinner, which
included delightful desserts and gourmet coffee!
From the kind thank-you notes and positive
comments that have been received, it is obvious
that all participating residents really enjoyed the
unique opportunity to socialize with neighbors new
and old over delicious food and drinks. After a
delicious dessert toast, residents worked off their
dinner on the dance floor to the elegant jazz
saxophone tunes of Grand Hampton resident, DJ
Louie!

Grand Hampton?s annual Trunk or Treat celebration was an incredible
success this year! Grand Hampton?s clubhouse parking lot was filled
with costumed residents in celebration, who went all out to transform

to be a part of making this holiday event such a
huge success!

their trunks into spooktacular creations for our little monsters to trick
or treat!
Many families came in full costume, from the adults to the family
dogs. The trunks were goulishly-decorated in every theme you can
imagine, including cars and golf carts being transformed into
mummies and other scary scenes. On hand, was a photo-opportunity
booth and even several classic carnival games for attendees of all
ages. An estimated 300 residents joined in the fun and festivities
which included professional face painting, a trunk decorating contest,
a costume contest and a movie night under the stars, featuring the
Halloween classic, ?Hocus Pocus.?
Melrose Lifestyle Services thanks the wonderful Grand Hampton
residents for their participation in this event and all of their efforts to
make Trunk or Treat a fun time for every single person!
