AMERICAN UNIVERSITY
SCHOOL OF
PUBLIC AFFAIRS
A PRIMER

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN
Welcome to American University!
The School of Public Affairs at American University (SPA) is
home to leading scholars in public policy, public administration,
criminology, law and society, organizational development,
political science, and other complex fields. Our faculty members
— renowned for both teaching and research — bring expertise
to bear and contribute to public discourse in all of these areas.
As we look to the future, we have an ambitious plan building
on our strengths and honoring our formidable legacy. We will
continue to produce 21st century challenge-focused research
that informs citizens and government as they work together
to improve the world around them. In addition to being
knowledgeable, engaged, and globally conscious citizens, our
graduates will increasingly apply the complex problem solving,
leadership, and research skills acquired during their time at
SPA. The school’s research and initiatives will create an even
deeper connection with thought leaders and decision makers.
And our physical space will project a new focus on collaboration,
encouraging faculty and students to partner together on
research and projects.
By magnifying the impact of our research, maintaining our
focus on excellent teaching, and preparing students for multiple
paths of success, we will continue to expand our central role in
the public affairs arena.
Everyone in the School of Public Affairs shares a commitment
to service, enthusiasm for learning, and interest in shaping the
public affairs dialogue. We look forward to working with you.
The School of Public
Affairs at American
University has a
storied legacy that
informs our values
and approach.
In 1934, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt began
implementing New Deal programs that sought to increase
“practical contacts between the collegiate and educational
world, and the operations of government.” He believed that
the collaboration of academia and public service would result
in better decision-making, not only for Depression-era
America, but also for future generations to come. From
FDR’s vision, American University’s School of Public Affairs
was born.
Over the last 80+ years, SPA has cultivated a culture of
excellence. Our personalized teaching and experiential
education transform the student experience. We empower
those who seek knowledge to conduct and produce research.
And we promote engagement to build a bridge between
academic thought and policy planning — inspiring change in
the world.
Today, with 1,800 current students and 23,000+ alumni, SPA
continues to tackle complex issues with thoughtful research
that educates, informs, and promotes change across a multitude
of fields.
THE EXCELLENCE WITH IMPACT INITIATIVE
In Fall 2014, SPA introduced a new
program to promote the broader engagement
of faculty and students in
public affairs both on and off campus.
Through this initiative, called “Excellence
with Impact” (EwI), the school
1) implements a series of activities to
enhance its visibility and engagement,
and 2) supports its faculty members in
sharing their work more broadly with
scholarly and policy communities. Faculty
members and administrators both
in and outside the university have acknowledged
the uniqueness of this program
that offers opportunities to expand
research and impact.
The Excellence with Impact initiative is
tracked in four categories: Research &
Rankings, Partnerships & Relationships,
Visibility, and Programs.
In the two years since its launch, SPA’s
Excellence with Impact initiative has:
• increased the engagement of
faculty in a broad range of
activities that enhance scholarship
• enhanced SPA’s visibility
• forged partnerships with
important organizations, and
• broadened the school’s impact in
the academic and policy arenas.
The Excellence with Impact program
has built momentum for the school. SPA
receives requests from prominent speakers,
agencies and organizations about
potential partnerships. The initiative has
helped to set SPA on a trajectory of success
that we look forward to continuing.
at the school, including policy forums,
faculty research, study abroad opportunities,
Ph.D. fellowships, and student
scholarships. SPA manages 24 endowed
scholarships generating income that
supports over $175,000 in scholarship
awards to approximately 50 students
annually (graduate, undergraduate, and
Ph.D. students).
Currently an estimated 2,000 SPA alumni
are working for the federal government,
an estimated 2,500 alumni are
working at state and local government
levels, and approximately 4,000 are
working for nonprofit organizations.
During the 2016 Election, hundreds of
SPA graduates worked for campaigns
around the country. SPA alumni were at
the helm of campaigns for Hillary Clinton
(Jennifer Palmieri, Communications
Director), Donald Trump (Corey Lewandowsky,
Campaign Manager), and Bernie
Sanders (Scott Goodstein, Online Campaign
Manager).
COMMUNICATIONS AND
OUTREACH
SPA’s communications efforts are focused
on increasing awareness of SPA faculty
and student accomplishments, and
amplifying overall visibility of the school.
Recent Accomplishments
• In 2015, SPA embarked on a new effort to
boost its visibility at major public affairs
conferences. SPA’s “Live Coverage”
is a combination of live-tweeting, curating
the social media conversation,
and daily email blasts to conference
audiences so that people in attendance
and beyond can follow and join in the
conversation. Live Coverage is conducted
in partnership with conference
organizers. In every case, the efforts resulted
in significantly increased visibility
for the school and faculty research
presented at each of the conferences,
in addition to enhanced relationships
with each of these organizations.
• The number of people visiting the SPA
website through our Facebook page in
2016 increased 200 percent, and web
sessions generated through Twitter increased
by 150 percent.
• In a two-week period, SPA’s “Predictions
for 2017” video reached nearly
13,000 people on Facebook. This is up
from a reach of 1,100 people in 2016.
to better understand the current affairs
conversation. Given the rapid pace of
developments in 2017, SPA has taken
this format to Facebook with SPA’s
Policy Explainer Live. Once a week,
audiences on Facebook will have access
to ask an SPA expert about the issues
making headlines that week. The effort
further promotes SPA as a central
source of expertise in the critical policy
issues of the day.
• In 2014-2015, SPA celebrated its 80th
anniversary. We designed a campaign
around a simple, yet heady hashtag:
#4ScoreSPA to blend a sense of historical
purpose and idealism with 21st century
internet-speak. Throughout the
campaign, 80 students, staff, faculty,
and alumni who embodied the ideals
associated with our institution were
profiled throughout the semester. The
campaign increased SPA’s social media
followers, traffic to the SPA website
and overall engagement on social media
accounts. Ultimately, the hashtags
provided the means to inspire our community
to share their accomplishments
with each other -- gaining a better understanding
of where SPA came from
and where it is going.
Below:Kim Ball, director
of SPA’s Justice Programs
Office during a Facebook
Live event in March 2017
• In 2016, SPA produced 80 web stories
focused on faculty and student
achievements. Most stories featured
faculty research results. Users who enter
the SPA site through a news story
end up visiting other areas on the site
(including the Apply Now page), resulting
in 60,000 additional page views.
• The SPA Policy Explainer is the School
of Public Affairs’ fresh take on issues in
the news. Faculty experts share their
knowledge of the policies beyond the
headlines, giving audiences the tools
LOOKING AHEAD:
SPA’S VISION
As we look to the future, we have
an ambitious plan building on
our strengths and honoring our
formidable legacy. In the coming
years, we see opportunities to
continue SPA’s upward trajectory.
Since it was founded nearly a century ago, the
School of Public Affairs has played an increasingly
critical role in building and enhancing careers
in public service while producing transformational
research that drives progress in
policy, politics, and public administration.
The school has enjoyed significant success
in the past few years as reflected in
increased enrollments, student and faculty
success, greater external funding, ongoing
strategic engagement, and expanded visibility
in policy circles as well as the academic
arena.
As we look to the future, we have an ambitious
plan building on our strengths and honoring
our formidable legacy. We will continue
to produce 21st century challenge-focused research
that informs citizens and government,
as they work together to improve the world
around them. In addition to being knowledgeable,
engaged, and globally conscious
citizens, our graduates will increasingly apply
the complex problem solving, leadership,
and research skills acquired during their time
at SPA. Our research and initiatives will create
an even deeper connection with thought
leaders and decision makers. And our physical
space will project a new focus on collaboration,
encouraging faculty and students to
partner together on research and projects.
In the coming years, we see opportunities
to continue SPA’s upward trajectory. We will
continue to capitalize on what SPA does best
– producing research that informs the public
policy conversation while educating future
leaders in politics, policy, and public administration.
Strategic investments will further position
our school, and university, for success
in the years and decades to come.
